Ty Flood, who defied illness, dies at age 17 Herricks student from Williston Park had earned a scholarship to Hofstra BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y

In the game of baseball, there are three true outcomes. When Ty Patrick Flood was at bat in the Williston Park Little League, more often than not there were only two, a walk or strikeout. Except for one day, when he made contact down the third baseline. Flood, who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was about 5 years old, ran to first before realizing the ball was overthrown into right field. He made it

to second, before realizing again the right fielder had missed his middle infielder and the ball sailed into left field. Ty was at third. He was at home. A home run for Ty Patrick Flood. It was probably the first time the other team was cheering for an opponent, as loudly as Flood’s teammates and family, said Ty’s Uncle Thomas on Friday at St. Aidan’s Church on Willis Avenue, where his funeral services were held. Flood, 17, died April 21. Continued on Page 45

Chin ed board re-election bid unopposed BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y

Hills for over a decade before moving to Roslyn and has had two children in Herricks Board of Education Herricks schools, she previously said. Chin was also elected school Trustee Juleigh Chin will be seeking re-election in an uncontested race on board president in 2019 and served one term before Henry Zanetti took May 17. Chin was elected to the Herricks over in 2021. During her term, she oversaw part school board in 2013, running unopposed to replace outgoing Trustee of the 16-month negotiation between Sanjay Jain. She lived in Manhasset the Herricks Board of Education and

the teacher’s association that raised salaries by 5.3% over five years, once ratified. The current retroactive to July 1, 2018, and ends on June 30, 2023. Before her time on the board, she was involved in the Herricks PTA since 2007 and also served two years as vice president of the Herricks Council of PTAs. Once elected, Chin supported ef-

forts to begin school classes later and was part of the board that brought in Superintendent Fino Celano. With Celano’s upcoming retirement at the end of this school year, Chin, if elected, would be able to help bring in another superintendent to the district. She also ran a tutoring business in Queens from 1996 to 2000 and

worked as a teacher’s aide in the Mineola school district for three years. In 2021, she was appointed deputy town clerk for the Town of North Hempstead, a position she does not currently hold. Currently, she still works with the town as part of the communications department. Continued on Page 46
