BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y In a party-line vote, the North Hempstead Town Board approved a redistricting proposal Thursday night that will reshape the town’s six councilmanic districts for the next 10 years during a heated nearly five-hour meeting.

The vote came after the four North Hempstead Democrats rejected a request by Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, who was elected as a Republican, to table the proposal.

“Looking at the four maps it’s easy to make a compelling argument that it was an attempt to preserve political power for the next decade through gerrymandering,” DeSena said.

“We have time to make sure as many of our residents’ voices are heard as possible in this process, as they will be the ones most affected by all this,” DeSena added. “This will decide the future of all residents in our town for the next 10 years. There’s nothing compelling us to put this to a vote tonight since we have two more board meetings and we can call another meeting.

It is important to take our time and do this process directly, otherwise we open the town to potential legal challenges.”

DeSena noted that the Town Board has meetings on July 7 and Aug. 4 ahead of the Aug. 12 deadline for re-

districting to be finalized.

The new maps will officially take place on Jan. 1, 2024, and candidates running for election in Districts 2, 4 and 6 next year will be running on the new maps.

The revised map includes splitting the Village of Mineola into two districts, the creation of an Asian plurality district and switching the numbers of District 4, now represented by Town Councilperson Veronica Lurvey, a Democrat, with District 5, now represented

by Town Councilman David Adhami, a Republican.

East Williston Mayor Bonnie L.S. Parente and former state Sen. Jack Martins voiced their opposition specifically to how Mineola was cut in half, saying they had to go through a thin line, roughly 500 feet at its narrowest point according to Google Maps, between Districts 1 and 3 where Wheatley Hills Golf Club is located in order to split Mineola.

The new map will also result in moving the election for the district now represented by Lurvey back by two years and moving up the district represented by Adhami two years.

Lurvey said the redistricting was based on data and considered what the different laws require.

The North Hempstead Town Board passed numerous bipartisan pieces of legislation last week that take aim at the Building Department and authorize a school bus safety program while appointing a new acting comptroller and establishing the position of deputy highway superintendent.

Supervisor Jennifer DeSena also announced that the Town Board tabled two separate hearings that she and Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey brought and plan to combine them by the July meeting.

The Town Board said its work on the two hearings is not completely done yet but will most likely be by the next meeting in July.

“We’re going to call these public hearings together and continue them at the next meeting,” DeSena said last Thursday, “as they represent a similar effort to accomplish the same goal of initiating reforms in our Building Department.”

One hearing was on a local law amending town code that would require the town Building Department commissioner to make a decision on expedited permits within seven days and remove the Town Board’s ability to override the department’s decisions. The second hearing was on a local law that would “make modifications to the procedure on requests for expedited permit application review,” according to the June agenda.

Another bipartisan piece of legislation that was passed now requires reports given to the Town Board from commissioners and department heads at the Building Department to be delivered on a monthly basis rather than annually.

“The purpose of this local law is to provide statistics so that everybody on the Town Board has the statistics about the functioning of the Building Department so that we can best make use of them and determine what needs to change and what is already working,” Lurvey said.

The former president and owner of New Hyde Park-based WhiteStar Limousine company who collected more than $200,000 in fraudulent disability benefits pleaded guilty to a second-degree grand larceny charge on Tuesday, June 14, Attorney General Letitia James announced.

Ragusa, 52, filed false disability reports with the state’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance from 2013 to 2020, citing a 2013 injury that impeded his abilities to perform daily activities, according to a release from James’ office.

“Anthony Ragusa swindled taxpayers by claiming the benefits for himself, but was caught in his fraudulent scheme when his wife posted bodybuilding photos of him online,” James said in a statement. “His illegal and shameful actions are an insult to those who actually live with disabilities, and I will always take action to bring fraudsters like Ragusa to justice on behalf of the people.”

Ragusa is required to pay $200,000 to the Social Security Administration, James said, and will be on probation for five years. If Ragusa does not pay the restitution fees by the time of his sentencing date, which was not disclosed in the release, he faces 1-3 years of incarceration.

The Town Board also authorized the creation of a school bus safety program that could potentially equip every school bus in town with recording equipment that would automatically

issue violations to drivers who pass a stopped school bus.

“The number of injuries and fatalities that have occurred due to this extremely avoidable situation is staggering,” DeSena said. “And I believe that the town is in a unique position to be able to drastically decrease these numbers over time.

There were some questions from the public about the effectiveness of the actual equipment and how the program will be paid for, which DeSena said will be answered and vetted during the bidding process.

Councilman Robert Troiano said in May, when the date for the hearing was scheduled,he wasn’t aware of how pervasive this problem is.

G.N. calls for Asian American education Superintendent Teresa Prendergast says district will review curriculum in fall

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Great Neck School District Superintendent Teresa Prendergast reported that department heads and other curriculum groups are discussing how Asian American and Pacific Islander history is beng taught and what improvements could be made at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting.

District residents encouraged the district to further promote Asian American and Pacific Islander history through various courses during the meeting.

Kevin Sun, secretary of the Great Neck Chinese Association, said Asian American history is American history and should be taught throughout the school district as such.

“From the invention of fiber optics to Hollywood and Broadway, Asian American and Pacific Islander history is a complicated tale of sufferings, contributions and the ultimate pursuit of the American Dream,” Sun said.

“For hundreds of years, Asian American and Pacific Island history has always been an indispensable part of American history and American identity. Unfortunately, it is hard to find in our students’ textbooks.”

Several students also attended the meeting, expressing concerns about how they have been impacted by the

Biliteracy Pathway Award given at NHP-GCP Program only available to second, fourth, sixth-graders with fifth grade added next semester

BY M A D E L I N E A R M ST R ON G The Biliteracy Pathway Award for the Garden City Park, Hillside Grade, Manor Oaks and New Hyde Park Road schools was announced at the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education’s first-ever live-streamed meeting June 13.

The biliteracy program was proposed in February and a committee of 14 teachers was created.

“I’m not sure that I’ve ever been more proud to be a part of this committee and all their hard work,” said Denise Connolly, New Hyde ParkGarden City Park assistant principal.

According to Tamara Chyi, one of the English teachers in the district, once the committee was created, a choice board was created for students, Rosetta Stone was rolled out to support language learning and then the committee presented the program to students and parents.

All students were given the opportunity to submit a video introducing their language.

Some students talked about themselves in that language, some students did a dance or sang a song and others presented their research on the culture of the language. Overall, 96 videos were submitted from the district with 15 from Garden City Park School, 42 from Hillside Grade School,

Zoning debate draws crowd to North Hills

BY ST E V E N K E E H N E R Ritz-Carlton residents packed North Hills’ Village Hall for a public hearing on proposed zoning changes within the condominium complex.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences is a private, gated community in North Hills. The hearing focused on an application from the complex to establish a residential business center.

Per Village Code 16-1, the trustees have jurisdiction over this application, as explained in a notice sent out by the village on May 31.

“This application has not yet been classified pursuant to the State Environmental Quality Review Act, and no determination of significance has been made,” the statement read.

The board had reached no resolution by the end of the discussions on Wednesday night. However, that didn’t stop trustees, residentsand complex officials from having passionate debates on the matter before then.

The hearing drew a large crowd.

Many attendees had to stand or sit in the lobby outside the meeting room.

Ritz-Carlton representatives discussed and presented to the board prior to public remarks. The trustees exchanged questions with the speakers, attorney Michael Sahn and Joe Graziose, executive vice president of residential development at RXR Realty.

“We’re not in business to make a profit. And if there was extra money, it’s the residents’ money,” he said. “It’s not sponsors’ money or the board’s money, right? So they’re paying dues every month for the ongoing mainte-

nance and operation of what I refer to as a business — the business of maintaining a $9 million a year budget.”

N.Y. preps for gubernatorial primaries Hochul, Suozzi, Williams lead Democratic party while Zeldin, Giuliani, Astorino, Wilson head GOP slate

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y New Yorkers will head to the voting booth Tuesday, June 28, to cast their votes in the Democratic and Republican primaries for governor.

Democratic incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul is facing challenges from U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (DGlen Cove) and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, while the Republican primary has four candidates on the ballot, including former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, Harry Wilson and U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley).

Hochul assumed her current role after becoming lieutenant governor during the Andrew Cuomo administration in 2015. Following Cuomo’s resignation last year, she became the first female governor of the state.

Hochul was a representative in the state’s 26th Congressional District from 2011 to 2013 before becoming lieutenant governor.

The governor said she has “prioritized keeping our communities safe, bringing down the cost of living for New Yorkers, and investing in schools to get our kids back on track,” according to her website.

In February, the state’s Democratic Committee endorsed Hochul for governor. Her running mate for lieutenant governor is former U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado, who serves in the position currently.

The congressman said he wanted to attack crime, corruption and help failing school systems in a virtual town hall with Blank Slate Media.

“I’m going to fight for the people, I’m not going to fight for the insiders,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi’s running mate is Diana Reyna, a

former deputy borough president in Brooklyn and former City Council member for the 34th District.

Williams has been New York City’s public advocate since 2019 serving in the City Council’s 45th District for 10 years. The first-generation New Yorker from Brooklyn “is committed to creating equal opportunity for every New Yorker,”

according to his campaign.

“We know that true public safety comes when communities have what they need to thrive. Public safety is safe housing, good health care, childcare, reliable transportation, and living-wage jobs—not overpolicing, arrests, incarceration, and surveillance,” his website says.

Williams’ running mate is activist Ana Maria Archila.

Hochul has raised significantly more money than both Suozzi and Williams, according to multiple reports.

On the Republican primary ballot, Rob Astorino is running for governor after his initial attempt in 2014 against Cuomo. He earned 40% of the vote and won the state outside of New York City, according to his website.

Astorino released a seven-point upstate jobs plan on June 1 that addresses regions that he says have suffered over the last three decades.

“New York has taxed, regulated, and harassed thousands of small and mid-sized businesses right out of the state; even the slightest reforms should encourage robust growth here,” Astorino said. “But the bold, time-tested ideas I’m proposing would significantly revive New York’s economy, moving our long downward trajectory into an upward arrow again.”

Andrew Giuliani, son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, is seeking his first election to public office after working in the Donald Trump administration in the Office of Public Liaison.

F. Park purchasing police cars, fire truck Entrance to village library set for bidding shortly, construction finished by later this year

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y The Floral Park Board of Trustees tooksteps to improve village facilities and resources on Tuesdday, authorizing the renovation of the roller hockey and multi-purpose court, purchasing two police patrol cars and a fire truck and beginning the bidding process to make the library’s entrance ADA compliant.

The maximum cost set for the court was $525,000, $120,000 for both patrol cars and $850,000 for the fire truck.

Village Mayor Kevin Fitzgerald said the court is in “dire shape” and has not been renovated on this level in nearly 25 years and the same goes for the fire apparatus.

“These projects are long-term investments and the cost per year is going to decrease the longer our village uses them,” Fitzgerald said after Tuesday night’s meeting.

Fitzgerald also said the fire engine will be for Reliance Engine Company No. 2 of the Floral Park Fire Department, located just off Jericho Turnpike on Holland Avenue.

Trustee Michael Longobardi said during his report the bidding process will begging shortly to make the front entrance of the Floral Park Library ADA compliant.

“This will include a new ramp for the entry doors making the library entrance fully ABA compliant and accessible,” Longobardi said.

“Construction is targeted to stop by the beginning of October.”

against the village’s resources for disabled citizens. She said she tried to use a mechanical lift to get into one of the village’s buildings, but it malfunctioned and was inoperable.

“When will disabled residents be able to participate in our community unconditionally,” Holubnyczyj questioned over Zoom. “For nearly 20 years now I have been speaking on behalf of the disabled community in Floral Park, imploring our village government to create a more consistent environment. I will remind you that disabled residents are considered second-class citizens in the Village of Floral Park.”

Fitzgerald apologized for the machine breaking down, saying the village could have done a better job of relocating the meeting that Holubnyczyj missed due to the malfunctioning.

“I’ve said many times we can always do better in certain places,” Fitzgerald responded.

“And in that case, we could have done something different or better and I apologize.”

Fitzgerald went on to say the library construction Longobardi mentioned is expected to be completed in the fall and when the village renovates its streets they install handicap-accessible curb cuts that provide seamless access from the curb to the street.

Fitzgerald added that there are ideas to improve the lift at village hall following a recent conference attended by a village superintendent that touched on the matter.

The next meeting for the Floral Park Board of Trustees will be held on July 19.

Famed former G.N. musician dies at 80

Edward Kalendar, a world-renowned musician and composer who lived and taught music in Great Neck, died on June 11 at the age of 80.

Kalendar, one of the Soviet Union’s underground jazz pioneers during the 1950s, spent his early years in Ukraine before he was musically trained at the Tashkent and Moscow Conservatories. A pianist and composer, Kalendar studied famed composers Albert Malakhov, Boris Zeidman and Aram Khachaturian.

During his studies, the Tashkent Conservatory’s dean warned him that aspiring to promote a genre from the Western world in the Soviet Union could be detrimental for his future.

Despite this, Kalendar continued to lead an underground jazz big band for another six years.

Following his musical education at the conservatory, Kalendar served as the conductor of the Tashkent Radio Orchestra from 1968-1976, making regular appearances as a guest conductor for the orchestra for nearly 20 more years. Kalendar was also the music director of Moscow’s Music Forklore Theater from 1991-94, gaining more and more popularity as his music began to circulate throughout the Soviet Union and other parts of

the continent.

In 1994, Kalendar and his wife Asya moved to New York, where he would perform at Alice Tully Hall and Rockefeller Center as well as the Kremlin Palace Concert Hall and many others venues.

A year later, Kalendar met Regina Gil, the founder and executive director for the Great Neck Arts Center (now the Gold Coast Arts Center). Gil said the arts center had just opened its doors to the public that year and that after hearing Kalendar play the piano, she decided to make him and his wife the center’s first two music teachers.

“Edward and his wife Asya came to Great Neck, played on the piano in my home, and brought me to the realization that I was hearing a genius musician and we needed to do what we could to help him rebuild his life and career,” Gil said in a statement.

“We welcomed Edward and his wife to teach at the Arts Center, our first music teachers, as he made contact with those musicians and others in the U.S. who would go on to become important to him in giving him the performance space and support that he needed to perform and compose.”

Many of Kalendar’s students went on to receive degrees from accredited schools such as the Oberlin Conservatory, The Julliard School, Mannes

School of Music, the Jerusalem Academy of Music, Princeton University, Harvard University and others.

Kalendar’s arrangements have been performed internationally by the Youth Chamber Orchestra at Temple University, the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra, the Lopes Latin Jazz Group, the Bacchanalia Chamber Orchestra and the Manhattan Symphonie Orchestra.

“Even after he achieved the recognition in this country that he had known in the USSR, [Kalendar] continued to teach his advanced students at the arts center,” Gil said. “He was remarkable in his loyalty to them and to us.”

Kalendar, who ended up moving to Philadelphia, was a member of the American Society of Composers and Publishers. A former student of Kalendar’s, Matthew Merker, lauded his vast knowledge about music theory.

“Mr. Kalendar amazed me with his technical expertise, knowledge of music theory, and his warm personality,” Merker said. “He opened a new door in my musical career, and showed me how classical music is essential for understanding and performing jazz.”

Kalendar is survived by his wife Asya, his daughter Elina Picht, his son-in-law Aaron Picht and his grandson Sebastian Picht.

Town Dems approve new election districts

Creating a minority-majority district, including united communities of interest and all the seven principles. I think that’s more important than protecting my seat or any one of our seats.”

Lurvey said the maps were “fair and equitable” and released a statement Monday criticizing DeSena and the Republicans for looking out for themselves.

“It is extremely disappointing that Supervisor DeSena and her Republican colleagues attempted to transform an independent and transparent process into a political circus,” Lurvey said. “The supervisor failed to maintain any semblance of decorum and allowed the meeting to devolve into what residents called stressful and an embarrassment.”Lurvey added, “She and her Republican friends were so focused on delivering their scripted comments from hyper-partisan politicos that they nearly forgot to hear from the residents, and had to be reminded to let the residents speak.

It is clear that Supervisor DeSena’s primary focus was on strategically carving up the Town map in a way that best suited her and her friends personally and politically. said. “Rather than work cooperatively in a bi-partisan manner to best represent the interests of all North Hempstead taxpayers, Councilwoman Lurvey is focused solely on political gain.“ DeSena also issued a statement Monday that called the maps “gerrymandered” and said the redistricting process had “no transparency.”

“By pushing through maps that create unique problems that the counsel to the redistricting commission admitted have no legal solution in our Town Code, it’s clear that majority council members would rather disenfranchise our residents from voting than install a set of maps that may not be politically advantageous to themselves. Shame on them,” she said.

The redistricting drew heated opposition from mayors throughout the town, who criticized the actual changes and the way in which they were created.

Parente, whose village will change from District 2 to 3, engaged in a back-and-forth discussion with Town Councilman Peter Zuckerman, arguing that he had not informed her of the three public hearings held in May by the town’s nonpartisan redistricting commission.

Parente said she was not engaged in the process but would like to have been, saying to Zuckerman directly that the two see each other at a lot of events and that she wishes she would have told her.

“We stood next to each other on Memorial Day Weekend and you didn’t mention it,” Parente said. “As my councilman, I am asking you not to allow this to move forward this evening.”

Mineola Mayor Paul Pereira read

a statement he released Monday and sent to each board member blasting the plan to split the village.

“I cannot support any plan that splits Mineola’s district and strongly urge all members of the Town Board to keep our village whole,” Pereira said Monday in a news release.

Other mayors to speak against the redistricting proposals included Barbara Donno of Plandome Manor and Lawrence Ceriello of Munsey Park, who sent a letter and e-mail that were read into the record, respectively.

Martins, a former mayor of Mineola and a member of the state redistricting commission after its creation in 2014, criticized the Town Board for a lack of transparency, saying the state commission sent out public notices to “get as many people in the area” to participate.

“Certainly we’re aware of how easy it is today to reach out to elected officials,” said Martins, who is running to reclaim his state Senate seat. “Especially with so many villages in the Town of North Hempstead; mayors, trustees, fire chiefs, school board presidents, school board trustees, fire districts, fire commissioners, water commissioners. The list goes on and on.

All of them could have been alerted to the fact that we had three hearings.”

Notice of the three public hearings held at town hall, Clinton G. Martin Park at New Hyde Park and the “Yes We Can” Community Center were posted to the town’s website, publications including Blank Slate Media and Newsday and articles on the redistricting process appeared in both publications as well.

Notices were also issued to local TV news outlets and social media net-

works and advised where the public could submit comments online.

Jeff Wice, legal consultant to the commission, said the steps North Hempstead took were by far more transparent than what he has seen throughout Long Island.

“I think it’s fair to say this has probably been the most open process for any redistricting in Nassau or Suffolk County that I have seen,” said Wice.

Wice has over 40 years of experience in redistricting, voting rights, and census law, serving as counsel to the state Legislature and assisting in all congressional and state legislative redistricting processes dating back to 1980. He is currently an adjunct professor of law at New York Law School where he founded the New York Census and Redistricting Institute.

He said the redistricting commission was bound by seven guidelines under state law. They include that population deviations between the largest and smallest districts cannot exceed 5% and districts cannot be drawn with the intent or result of denying or abridging the equal opportunity of racial or minority groups to vote.

The committee also needed to also consider contiguous territories that connect, are compact and avoid political gerrymandering.

The guidelines also state that districts should consider “communities of interest,” which are not defined by law but describe communities that share self-described similarities and villages that comprise less than 40% of a single district’s population should not be divided.

Wice said state law is essentially

one of four statutes that have jurisdiction over the redistricting process, including the U.S. Constitution, the Voting Rights Act and the town charter.

It is currently unclear if the new proposal violates any part of the U.S. Constitution and if the redrawn maps will face legal challenges in the future.

Among the other changes: District 1, which is currently represented by Democrat Robert Troiano, adds a small portion of Roslyn Heights to its existing areas in Westbury, New Cassel, Old Westbury and Carle Place District 2, which is represented byDemocrat Councilman Peter Zuckerman, loses East Williston, Manhasset Hills, Herricks and parts of Roslyn Heights while gaining North Hills and parts of Mineola to the existing communities in Albertson, East Hills, Glenwood Landing, Greenvale, Roslyn Harbor, parts of Roslyn Heights and Searingtown.

District 3, which is represented

by Republican Councilman Dennis Walsh, loses parts of Mineola and Garden City Park while gaining East Williston, parts of Floral Park and North New Hyde Park to its existing communities in parts of Garden City Park and Mineola, New Hyde Park and Williston Park.

District 4, whose number will change to District 5, is represented by Lurvey. It loses North Hills, Roslyn and Roslyn Estates while gaining Munsey Park, Plandome Manor, Plandome Heights, Saddle Rock, Great Neck Estates, Saddle Rock Estates and Harbor Hills to the existing communities in Manhasset, the unincorporated Allenwood Area of Great Neck, Great Neck, Kensington, Kings Point and Thomaston.

Lurvey, who was first elected in 2019, would be able to run for reelection for District 5 in 2025, giving her district six years between electing a member of the Town Board.

District 5, whose number will change to District 4, is represented by Adhami.

Adhami, who was elected in 2021, would run again in 2023 if he sought re-election for the new District 4, giving his district two straight election cycles in that they choose a member of the seven-person Town Board.

The district loses Saddle Rock, Great Neck Estates, parts of both Floral Park and North New Hyde Park, Saddle Rock Estates and Harbor Hills while gaining Manhasset Hills, Herricks and parts of Garden City Park to the existing communities in parts of North New Hyde Park, Garden City Park and Floral Park, Great Neck Plaza, Russell Gardens, University Gardens, Lake Success and other incorporated areas.

When asked by Adhami multiple times about the reason for swapping the election cycles of Districts 4 and 5, Wice said that it was not a requirement or consideration for the commission to keep election cycles in place because town code did not create a statute prohibiting it.

District 6, which is represented

by Democrat Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte, loses the villages of Plandome Manor, Plandome, Plandome Heights and Munsey Park while gaining Roslyn and Roslyn Estates to the existing communities in Baxter Estates, Flower Hill Manorhaven, Port Washington, Port Washington North and Sands Point.

“As you may know, the Asian population in this town has grown signif-

icantly in the past 10 years,” Zhang said. “Asian Americans now make up almost 25% of the population of this town, and the diversity of the town needs to be represented and reflected on the Town Board.”

Two members of the seven-member redistricting commission chosen by the Town Board — Mary Kay Barket and James McHugh — were critical of the commission process, with Barket calling it a “big waste of time.”

“It didn’t accomplish what it should have,” Barket said. “It’s the best of the worst.”

McHugh, who was appointed to the redistricting commission by Adhami and served on the commission previously, said in the early 2000s the decision was made to stagger election terms between Districts 2, 4 and 6 and Districts 1, 3 and 5.

He said in 2003 everyone on the Town Board ran for the first election of the first set of districts and has remained since.

McHugh said the commission chose four proposals to present to the Town Board out of an original list of nine.

“It was never the intention of the original creators of these districts to make it that way,” McHugh said, speaking about Districts 4 and

5 swapping election cycles. “To try to manipulate that or change that, when I sat on this commission I said, ‘Why? For what reason, what purpose? To make it more disorganized?’”

Barket and McHugh were two of the seven-member board alongside Chairperson Dana Boylan, Vice Chair Harrison Feuer, Secretary Jill Wasser, Sumeet Datt and Patricia Schneider.

A presentation at the beginning of the meeting was given by Kent Stegall of Citygate GIS, a service that provided consultation on both data analysis and mapping for the commission, who personally drew the lines himself.

Stegall detailed where the original numbers from the 2020 Census are transferred and how it relates to the town in terms of population differences.

According to the 2020 federal census, which was released on Aug. 12, 2021, the Town of North Hempstead’s population grew by 11,317 people to 237,639. This is a 5% increase from the 2010 Census, which listed the Town’s population as 226,322.

The town’s white, non-Hispanic population decreased from 64.8% in 2010 to 53.9% in 2020, according to the data. Its Asian-American popula-

tion rose from 14.9% to 23% over the past decade, a 62% increase.

Hispanics or Latinos, which made up 12.8% of the town’s population in 2010, grew to more than 20% over the past 10 years to 14.8%. Its Black population declined from 5.3% in 2010 to 4.8% in 2020, statistics showed.

Other races not specified in the census data increased by more than 138.6% throughout the town, jumping from 691 in 2010 to 1,649 in 2020. Individuals representing two or more races nearly doubled over the past decade, growing from 3,872 in 2010 to 6,424 in 2020.

Various villages in the town saw drastic decreases in their white, non-Hispanic populations over the decade, headlined by Lake Success’ 45.9% decline. In 2010, according to statistics, the village had more than 1,900 white, non-Hispanic residents.

A decade later, that number decreased to 1,039. Lake Success’ Asian-American population more than doubled in that time, jumping from 791 residents in 2010 to 1,587 in 2020.

The Villages of South Floral Park, Russell Gardens, Thomaston and New Hyde Park also saw decreases of more than 20% in their white, non-Hispanic populations over the decade. Those villages also recorded increases of more than 60% in their Asian-American populations over the

same period, according to statistics.

Asian-American populations increased by more than 50% in most of the North Shore, with the villages of East Williston, Plandome, Kensington, Great Neck Plaza, Munsey Park, Russell Gardens, Plandome Heights, Great Neck, Lake Success and Great Neck Estates showing increases of more than 100% since 2010.

The villages of Roslyn, Kings Point, Mineola, South Floral Park, Saddle Rock, Floral Park, East Hills, Thomaston, Plandome Manor, Williston Park, Roslyn Estates, New Hyde Park and Flower Hill saw increases of more than 50% to their Asian-American populations.

Hispanic or Latino populations in the villages of Kings Point, Roslyn Estates, Plandome Manor, Plandome, East Hills, Williston Park, Roslyn, Plandome Heights and Great Neck Estates grew by 50% since 2010, statistics showed.

Black populations grew by at least 50% in the villages of Roslyn Estates, Kings Point, Plandome Manor, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Sands Point, Great Neck Plaza and Russell Gardens over the decade, according to the figures.

Based on the numbers, each of the six districts did not contain substantially equal numbers of population, requiring the district boundary lines to be altered to balance differences in deviation.

Stegall said of the four options, two were changed following public comments submitted in-person and online after three public hearings in May. Stegall said aside from the public comments in-person at the three hearings, there were less than 30 certified public comments submitted online.

Stegall said no partisan data was considered in drawing up maps nor was he aware of any Town Board member’s home address, which was questioned multiple times during the public hearing.

Why the rush to change town map?

ou certainly would have good reason to question a North Hempstead redistricting plan that split the Village of Mineola — a close-knit community that has worked well together on redeveloping its downtown business area — into two town districts.

The seven redistricting guidelines set by state law include calls to consider contiguous territories that connect, are compact and share “communities of interest.”

Check. Check. And check again.

We understand that the sevenmember town redistricting commission appointed by the Town Board and the Town Board itself needed to ensure that the largest and smallest districts did not exceed a 5% difference in population and to recognize North Hempstead’s growing Asian population.

But we still don’t get why the four Town Board Democrats rejected a request by North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, who won election as a Republican, to postpone the board’s decision on a map that will guide the town for the next 10 years.

The Town Board, DeSena noted, has meetings on July 7 and Aug. 4 ahead of the Aug. 12 deadline for redistricting to be finalized.

“We have time to make sure as many of our residents’ voices are heard as possible in this process, as they will be the ones most affected by all this,” DeSena said last Thursday.“This will decide the future of all residents in our town for the next 10 years. There’s nothing compelling us to put this to a vote tonight since we have two more board meetings and we can call another meeting. It is important to take our time and do this process directly—otherwise, we open the town to potential legal challenges.”

DeSena had a point. Why the rush?

The map approved by the four Town Board Democrats includes the creation of a district in which Asians are the majority and switching the

numbers of District 4, now represented

by Town Councilperson Veronica Lurvey, a Democrat, with District 5, now represented by Town Councilman David Adhami, a Republican.

The change in the district numbers map will result in moving the election for the district now represented by Lurvey back by two years and moving up the district represented by Adhami up by two years.

The redistricting hearing drew heated opposition from mayors throughout the town, who criticized the actual changes and the way in which they were created.

East Williston Mayor Bonnie L.S. Parente, whose village will change from District 2, now represented by Democrat Town Councilman Peter Zuckerman, to District 3, now represented by Republican Dennis Walsh, engaged in a back-and-forth discussion with Zuckerman, arguing that he had not informed her of the three public hearings held in May by the town’s nonpartisan redistricting commission.

Parente said she was not engaged in the process and would like to have been, saying to Zuckerman directly that the two see each other at a lot of events and that she wishes he would have told her.

“We stood next to each other on Memorial Day Weekend and you didn’t mention it,” Parente said. “As my councilman, I am asking you not to allow this to move forward this evening.”

Other mayors to speak against the redistricting proposals included Barbara Donno of Plandome Manor and Lawrence Ceriello of Munsey Park, who sent a letter and e-mail that were read into the record, respectively.

Former state Sen. Jack Martins, a former mayor of Mineola and a member of the state redistricting commission after its creation in 2014, criticized the Town Board for a lack of transparency. He said the state commission sent out public notices to “get as many people in the area” to participate.

“Certainly we’re aware of how easy it is today to reach out to elected officials,” said Martins, a Republican, who is running to reclaim his state Senate seat. “Especially with so many villages in the Town of North Hempstead; mayors, trustees, fire chiefs, school board presidents, school board trustees, fire districts, fire commissioners, water commissioners. The list goes on and on. All of them could have been alerted to the fact that we had three hearings.”

The officials have a point about the outcome. We find it hard to believe the board could not have come up with a map that left Mineola intact among other changes that could have improved the outcome.

But in terms of transparency not so much.

Notice of the three public hearings held at town hall, Clinton G. Martin Park at New Hyde Park and the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center were posted to the town’s website, publications, including Blank Slate Media and Newsday, and articles on the redistricting

process appeared in both publications as well.

Notices were also issued to local TV news outlets and social media networks and advised where the public could submit comments online.

Kent Stegall of Citygate GIS, a service that provided consultation on both data analysis and mapping for the commission, said aside from the public comments in-person at the three hearings, there were fewer than 30 certified public comments submitted online.

We agree with the mayors on the importance of the redistricting plan.

But the mayors who did not attend or comment at those hearings should take a look in the mirror before assigning blame. Theydid not do their jobs and their complaints ring a little hollow.

Jeff Wice, legal consultant to the commission, said the steps North Hempstead took were by far more transparent than what he has seen throughout Long Island.

ably been the most open process for any redistricting in Nassau or Suffolk County that I have seen,” said Wice.

Wice seemed to be referring at least in part to the Nassau redistricting plan approved 10 years ago by the county Legislature.

In that case, Republican county legislators used a 10-9 seat advantage to draw lines that gave them a 12-7 advantage in districts in which registered Republicans outnumbered registered Democrats.

Back then as now registered Democrats outnumbered registered Republicans in Nassau.

To increase their advantage in 12 districts, Republican county legislators divided Roslyn and Hicksville not into two districts, not into three districts but into four districts stretching from one end of Nassau to the other.

DeSena said the map approved by town Democrats along with three other options were “an attempt to preserve political power for the next decade through gerrymandering.

Uniondale’s Mitchel Field, a malpractice story

I

f you asked the average Long Islander do they know where Mitchel Field is you would probably be met with a blank stare.

Possibly, if you live in Uniondale or Hempstead, there is a chance you have heard of this vast site, whose history dates back to the Revolutionary War. While its past history may be memorable, it currently sits there desperate for some forward-thinking planner or elected official, to come up with a bold idea on what to do with its vast acreage.

According to Wikipedia, during the Revolutionary War, Mitchel Field was on land known as the Hempstead Plains.

During the War of 1812, it was an Army enlistment center. During the American Civil War, it was the site of a training center for Infantry units and was the location of Camp Winfield Scott.

During the Spanish-American War, it was known as Camp Black.

Fast forward to World War I, on each day, aviators were trained for

air combat. During all of the current wars, it was a daily landing site for a variety of planes as part of the national defense system.

With the breakout of World War II, it became a United States Air Force facility and was given the name Mitchel Air Force Base. It was designated as the command and control organization for supervising the training of the air reserve in 15 eastern states and the District of Columbia.

But by 1949, due to the growth of nearby communities, a decision was made to shift its operations to an out-of-state facility. In June 1961, the land which is bordered by the Meadowbrook Parkway and Hempstead Turnpike was closed for military use.

The property was then turned over to Nassau County.

When the Nassau Coliseum was opened in the 1960s there was a ray of hope that the land would be developed into some type of commercial and residential complex.

muffed the challenge and proceeded to give out a number of long-term land leases to favored party donors.

Eventually, the leases expired and today’s Mitchel Field is home to a small group of occupants, including the Cradle of Aviation, Nassau County Community College, Hofstra

University and the Coliseum. There is still a large amount of undeveloped land, which is the subject of continuous talk and no action.

Periodically, a ray of hope emerges when some master developer announces plans for the Mitchel land. Twenty-five years ago, the late Charles Wang proposed a massive entertainment and housing complex called the “Lighthouse”, which included a remodeled Nassau Coliseum, which was to be the permanent home of the New York Islanders.

Wang owned the team and was desperate to keep it on the island.

The plan was grand in size and frightened most of the then-elected officials, who had difficulty imagining what such a project would involve.

The fate of the Wang plan fell into the jurisdiction of the Town of Hempstead, which eventually decided that it was not in its political interests to let the project be built.

After the failure of the Wang proposal, there was some hope that the Nassau Coliseum would remain as

home of the hockey team.

But the team moved to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and never came to use the Coliseum as its permanent home. The Coliseum went through a renovation and attracted some major events. But once again, government malpractice intervened.

There was no doubt that the Coliseum was too small for a professional hockey team and there was a chance that the team could move off island.

The new owners of the Islanders, working with the state and a private developer, pushed hard for a new home and with the blessing of Governor Cuomo, the UBS Arena at Belmont Park was born.

There is no doubt that the facility is modern and most attractive, but no new plans were advanced for the Mitchel Field site. The only tenant in the Coliseum is the Riptide, a great professional lacrosse team, but the arena sits idle most of the year.

There is no discussion about the next stage in the life of Mitchel Field, which is a sad story for Long Island.

Caught in the web of the phone company

A

friend of ours called the other day asking for advice about what to do with his cellphone.

“Chuck it into the ocean!” I yelled. But, alas, it was my husband who was on the phone call, so nobody heard me.

Anyway, you’re not allowed to pollute the ocean like that — any more — so maybe it’s just as well he couldn’t hear my sage advice.

The thing is this friend was calling from the phone store, where he’d gone with what he thought was a simple problem, a broken cellphone.

But after a good 20 minutes with the salesman, he was about to spring for his own geo-stationary satellite. Or something.

“Don’t do it!” exclaimed my husband. “Whatever you’re about to do, wait for us.” And my husband and I jumped into the car and rushed to the phone store. Because under no circumstances should a friend let a friend walk into a phone store—unaccompanied.

I’ve always had my Electrical Engineer husband with me, plus some-

times the Physicist or the Economist Son. And even so, I always walk out with the dazed suspicion that I’ve been hoodwinked, but never knowing enough to know for sure.

I still remember, quite vividly, the experience of standing in that same store and thinking that I understood what the salesman was saying up to a point—and then, after that point, gibberish. I looked at my sons and they still seemed to understand the language being spoken, so maybe it was me.

All I really know is I’m still waiting for my $300 rebate.

“Oh, Judy,” says my husband, “you know that’s because of the blah blah blah that didn’t blah blah blah…” so clearly he’s part of the problem.

But honestly, it shouldn’t be so hard to buy a phone. You shouldn’t need a degree in electrical engineering to keep yourself from buying a lemon.

Now, they’re rubbing my face in it, rubbing salt in the wound, taking out the last phones I ever truly understood — the last pay phones in Manhattan. It used to be so simple. You

A Look on the Lighter Side got in the booth, put a coin in the slot, and it worked for three minutes. You wanted another three minutes, you put another coin in the slot. If you were clever, you had your next coin ready.

My favorite scene in Steven Spielberg’s 2017 film about Watergate, Katharine Graham and the Washington Post (called “The Post”) showed a

reporter rushing out of the office with a bucket of coins to keep a pay phone working.

But at least when you walked out of your phone booth, your transaction was over. None of this getting a text on your phone that says, “You’re being charged for overage data. Your current overage charge is $90 for 6GB of usage, and you’ll soon be charged another $15.00. You have one day left.”

It feels like a hostage ransom note, except it doesn’t even give you any choice. And what is “overage” data, anyway? It sounds bad — although not as bad as under-age data.

That would be criminal.

“Why does data have an age anyway?”

“Oh, Judy, it just means you’ve run over on a part of our family plan.”

Which means, when I finally wrap my head around it, that our children, walking around on the other side of the Earth, are costing me money… while I sleep.

“Welcome to being a parent!”

And I have no way to control it.

“Like I just said…”

To be honest, it sounds like the weirdest thing I ever heard of in physics, something even Albert Einstein thought was weird because he named it “spooky action at a distance.” As best I understand it, two particles can be created at the same time, but either near or separated in space. Either way, if one particle is in one state, the other particle will always know to be in another—simultaneously—and no matter how far apart they are.

This is just plain impossible, which is why Einstein called it spooky.

It is also sometimes called “quantum entanglement.”

Entanglement is the exact right word. I am just a fly, caught up in Verizon’s web, in quantum entanglement with my family.

But it’s a strange day when I need quantum physics to help me understand my phone bill.

We performed an “exfiltration” on our friend, and got him out of that phone store and into the nearest diner with his wallet intact.

But nothing can explain to me why I’m still waiting for that $300 rebate.

THE BACK ROAD

Antique Evelyn left an indelible memory

M

y mother was five months shy of her 77th birthday when she died 25 years ago in the spring of 1997.

I received “the call” from her next door neighbor in New Jersey while I was attending a meeting at my office on Long Island. I had just visited her for Passover dinner a few days before along with my wife and our two sons.

The driver who came by her house to pick her up for dialysis rang the doorbell, but she didn’t answer. He knocked on her next door neighbor’s door. The neighbor had a key and when he opened the side door and walked up three steps to the kitchen, he found her on the floor.

She had died of heart failure.

Years earlier she had undergone bypass surgery and before that an angioplasty. The dye that was used for the angioplasty affected her kidney functioning.

My mom was a longtime smoker.

She finally quit before she had surgery. Her gravelly voice was a telltale sign. It became a part of her persona, especially as a businesswoman with a

reputation for being tough. More on that later.

One of my routine tasks as a young child, before we moved to the suburbs, was to walk to the corner candy store from our apartment in Newark and buy her three packs of Camel cigarettes at a quarter a pack.

She always added a nickel so I could buy a candy bar. My No. 1 choice was Payday, which consists of salted peanuts covering a nougat-like caramel center.

Fun fact: Did you know that Payday candy bars were first manufactured in 1932 by Frank “Marty” Martoccio, a macaroni and candy manufacturer from Minnesota? Neither did I. But I just googled it.

I don’t think my teeth could handle a Payday today, although my dentist has a great payday whenever I visit.

My mother, born Evelyn Goldberger in August 1920, was a middle child.

She told me she wanted to go to college, but that privilege was reserved for her younger brother.

designer. During her latter high school years she cut school for several weeks during December to work at Gimbels, a department store in Newark, so she could earn enough money to buy designer clothes. I’m not sure how she pulled that off.

After high school she was a bookkeeper for a vending machine company. I later learned that it was a front for the Jersey mob. She was mostly

tight-lipped about that, although I did manage to squeeze a few good stories out of her. Sorry, but not enough space here to go into more detail.

By the time I was a young teenager, she started an antiques business to help support the family. She built it from the ground up. Early on she sold her wares at the Englishtown Flea Market in Manalapan, N.J., on Saturday mornings. She woke me or my brother at 3 a.m. to travel with her and help her to unload and unpack.

She and my dad, who died three years before her at age 74, went to estate sales and, in time, she qualified for spots at fancy antique shows in New York City. For many years, she and my dad would go every Sunday morning to buy and sell at the famous 26th Avenue Flea Market in the city. It became a regular family meeting place before and after our kids were born. It was fun seeing her in her element.

She also opened a store that she called Antique Evelyn. Some of my childhood friends used to go there to get advice for jewelry gifts for their girlfriends. At home, she hid her jew-

elry in the freezer, packed in tin foil, although I wouldn’t advise it. Patient thieves will eventually find their way to the fridge.

Growing up, I wasn’t personally aware of any gay people. That is, until my mom went into business. Her best friends in the antique business were gay men. She often had several couples over for dinner. Sometimes they slept over when there was a show nearby. She always raved about the parties they invited her and my dad to in Manhattan.

When mom died and we were sitting shiva, a few of those same friends stopped by to pay their respects. They had the most fun talking about her wheeling-and-dealing. It was a cutthroat world and they respected her business acumen and negotiating skills. And they loved her for her generous spirit and friendship.

It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Antique Evelyn left the Earth. She was a character. Harder still is to know that she was only five years older than I am today and too young to die.

Hochul deserves election in her own right

T

o be honest, I was concerned that Kathy Hochul, who comes from conservative upstate (and yes, 10 years ago when she was in Congress got an A rating from the NRA) would not continue the policies and programs that have transformed, revitalized, reinvigorated New York ever since Democrats cemented control of the government, when she was elevated from lieutenant governor to governor 10 months ago.

Look around at our state parks, revitalized downtowns, our new bridges, our new roadways, new airports, wind farms going in well off Long Island’s southern shore, a focus on women’s rights, civil rights, voting rights, criminal justice, equity, and aggressive focus on sustainable economic development. Be honest, all these things were put into place by the disgraced Andrew Cuomo, but Hochul has smartly, vigorously continued them. (As I write this, Gov. Hochul signed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York.)

And she has made her own mark as well, most notably and urgently with women’s rights and gun safety.

It is fairly remarkable what she has accomplished in just the 10 months since she was put into office, particularly on gun safety. She not only signed a dozen gun safety laws — banning ghost guns, strengthening Red Flag law, microstamping, implementing gun violence prevention programs in communities — and created a coalition of states to go after gun trafficking. But she has set a strategy to immediately respond

if (when) the rightwing Supreme Court majority nullifies New York’s concealed carry permit law.

Responding to challenger, Congressman Tom Suozzi’s persistent attack that she earned an A-rating from the NRA 10 years ago when she was in Congress, she zinged back that she has evolved. “That evolution is an evolution that we need to have more people have. And I’m the best person to talk to about that.”

Hochul has also been aggressive in going after domestic terrorism, hate crimes and cybersecurity, establishing a first-of-its-kind Joint Security Operations Center in Brooklyn as part of a $61.9 million investment in the state’s cybersecurity infrastructure and proposing a new $30 million program for localities to bolster their cyber defenses.

She has been a steely strong champion of protecting women’s rights to control their own bodies and their own destiny.

“Like the vast majority of Americans, I was horrified to learn that extremists on the court are likely to strip away the right to an abortion by overturning Roe,” she said. This decision, once announced, will have devastating consequences for the health, well-being and economic security of millions of women across this country. But New York is not backing down.”

She announced $35 million to support abortion providers and new legislation to protect abortion providers and their patients.

“Make no mistake: for as long as I am governor, New York will be

a safe harbor for all those who need abortion care,” Hochul declared.

(This clearly would not be the case if Republicans take control.)

She also has insured that economic development, investments in infrastructure, public health – smartly anticipating new surges in COVID and new pandemics — and education and environmental protection be based on equity for communities.

She has been aggressive in advancing New York’s transition to clean, renewable energy and a sustainable economy. “With her Clean Path NY initiative, Gov. Kathy Hochul is championing the largest renewable energy and transmission project in New York state in the last 50 years.” said Assemblymember Kevin A. Cahill (D-Ulster, Dutchess).

Hochul is making necessary, historic investments in the state’s health care infrastructure as well as public

education and isn’t just talking about affordable housing, but doing something about it.

She has proved an excellent steward of the state’s financial balance sheet, wisely looking ahead to when federal COVID stimulus funding dries up and the likelihood that when Republicans take control of the pursestrings, they won’t pass any more (Republicans have already blocked new COVID funding for vaccines, PPE and testing, despite repeated surges), and will likely revert back to withholding funding for New York and other blue states after climate disasters.

Another key target of Suozzi’s attack on Hochul is how she won the $600 million subsidy for a new $1.4 billion Buffalo Bills stadium. She defended the Buffalo Bills deal saying, “We structured a deal that is best for taxpayers—that stadium will be more than paid for in tax revenues and the economic benefit will far exceed the investment. It will create 10,000 new jobs — critically important to western New York. I understand people are questioning, but I represent a very large, diverse state.

Every very part has its regional priorities. The Buffalo Bills is the identity of Western New York, the way Broadway is to New York City. The stadium deal makes sure the team will stay for 10 years.”

In point of fact, Hochul’s “selling point” is that she brings “a fresh and collaborative approach to governing and is working hard to get results for New Yorkers.” But, as the Buffalo Bills deal demonstrates, she also has

proved herself to be no pushover, or (as the stereotype of women goes) “desperate” to win others’ approval, or blowing whichever way political winds blow, and yet being very responsive to what New Yorkers are asking for. (It is all there in her budget, which puts dollars to governance values and priorities.)

The third contender in the Democratic primary for Governor is Jumaane Williams, New York City public advocate. More like a local activist that someone who can helm a state the size of a country, he is much too narrowly focused (angry), zeroing in on redressing wrongs (while giving absolutely no credit for the last five years in which equity and justice were fundamental, or the fact that both the Assembly and Senate are not just controlled by Democrats but by blacks) and doesn’t seem to have a plan or vision for the state to grow sustainably or equitably.

Meanwhile, questions that need to be posed to any of the Republican gubernatorial hopefuls: which of the laws signed by Hochul – on gun safety, women’s rights, voting rights, climate change – would you seek to repeal and what is your plan to handle the next deadly pandemic?

Kathy Hochul deserves to be the Democrat candidate and to win the general election to continue as New York’s governor.

Early voting is underway until June 26; the primary election for governor, Lt. governor attorney general, state Assembly, judges and party positions is Tuesday, June 28.

Tsunami of confident youth takes over golf

W

e all choke on our dreams, especially when they are within sight. Choking causes stagnation, shame, disappointment and depression.

Choking is common in everyday life, but it occurs quietly without anyone knowing much about it. All you must do is procrastinate and avoid opportunities and your dreams and your success slowly slide by on the conveyor belt of lost opportunities.

The reason sports are so much fun is that they offer opportunities for success that must be dealt with.

Golfers must hit the next shot and if you happen to be playing in the US Open at The Country Club at Brookline this week, golf shots take on an overwhelming feel. The moment is big and there is a lot to swallow when you are about to hit a shot that’s worth $2,250,000.

This year’s US Open at The Country Club was unusual because nobody choked! At least not the three youngsters who were atop the leaderboard. Matt Fitzpatrick (age 27), Will Zalotoris (age 25), and Scottie

Scheffler (age 25), all relative newcomers to the world of big-time golf, strode down each fairway on the back nine with swagger and grace and in the end Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England, won the US Open by one shot. But Zalatoris and Scheffler did not hand it to him as what happens in most major tournaments. No one in this trio choked.

How was it possible for these lesser beings to withstand the ego withering heat of a US Open and not spit out the bit in the end? The true gods of golf, guys like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, John Rahm, Dustin Johnson or Brooks Koepka, will usually have the courage, mental fortitude, and self-belief to look pressure in the eye and not blink.

But rarely do we get to see those who are new to fame and fortune stare at $2,250,000 and not look away.

This is a question that transcends talent, coaching, and hard work.

Mental strength is not something that is easily trained. The only golfer who was trained to be mentally impenetrable was Tiger Woods and that was

largely because his father was a Green Beret who taught Tiger to be a warrior from the time he was 5 years old.

But to my knowledge, there are no Green Berets in the Fitzpatrick, Zalatoris or Scheffler families, although Will Zalatoris’ dad was a military pilot.

I think the basic reason people choke is because their minds are not as strong as their bodies and as their skill level takes them to places their

mind simply cannot cope with, they choke on the moment. My guess is that these young players have been exposed to pressure from such an early age that their minds have been strengthened along with their bodies. They look like newcomers, but they have been playing serious competitive golf since about age 5. That means that they have been exposed to national and international level pressure for 20 years or more.

And that may be why when the press asked Matt Ftizpatrick how he felt about the grind of winning the US Open, he laughed and said, “I hated every minute of it.” And as Freud once said there is much truth behind every joke.

We are in a new world in golf. The players are younger and tougher than ever before. And as for the older gods of golf, Dustin Johnson is now 37, Justin Thomas is 29 and Rory McIlroy is 33 and they are fast becoming the aged of the game. The average length of an NFL career is something like 3 ½ years, thanks to injury. Who would have guessed that the half life of a

golfer would be about 7 years or so?

In golf however, the injuries are usually not of the physical kind but rather are psychological injuries to self-esteem. Those who have reached the ripe old age of 30 and who have been in the spotlight for a few years are the recipients of numerous psychic scars. They are the ones who are worried and cautious as they look over their shoulders and see a tsunami of confident fearless youth heading their way and not one will be choking.

Not yet anyway. Let’s give them a few years to shoulder fame, fortune and public scrutiny and see how free their minds and swings remain. Time will tell.

Low buildings pose danger to bird migration

L

ast month I attended the semiannual Audubon NY Chapter Council meeting held up in Saratoga Springs, featuring two speakers who provided a wealth of information on bird collision.

Dr. Benjamin Van Doren is a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca. He has focused on using big data to understand how climate change, light pollution and human-dominated landscapes impact migrating birds. He is working to develop networks using citizen science, remote sensing and other sources to forecast when “lights out” nights will be most beneficial.

Van Doren discussed how spring migration takes place between March and June with the peak in late April and early May. Over 5 billion birds are on the move during that time, but numbers per night will vary enormously depending on weather and wind conditions. Some 80% of migration takes place at night and radar data shows that 50% of migration takes place on only 10-15 nights of this period.

nights would have a significant impact on lowering migration mortality.

These dates will change from year to year. Migration along the Atlantic Flyway to the Northeast was relatively quiet this year due to weeks of north winds and cold weather, while the Central Flyway was white hot with waves of birds.

Van Doren and Kyle Horten have built an online tool, Birdcast.info, hosted by Cornell that predicts migration patterns and density, which can allow homeowners and building managers to turn out lights on high migration density nights.

Connie Sanchez, the Bird Friendly Building coordinator for National Audubon, had some surprising statistics. While most of us generally think building collisions involve urban skyscrapers, facts prove otherwise. About 44% of collisions are on one-to-three story buildings, 55% of strikes are on buildings with four to 11 stories and only 1% hit buildings 12 stories and taller. Homes and low-rise suburban buildings account for a huge number of bird deaths. This includes daytime collisions caused by birds seeing re-

flections of sky and shrubbery and thinking the window is flyable space.

Van Doren cited over 40 years of statistics from the McCormick Center in Chicago, a low- rise (three story) convention center on the Chicago waterfront, like the Javits Center in New York City. For the first 20 years, lights were on all the time at night. In 1999 that was changed to random windows lit and bird strike numbers plummet-

ed. Clear evidence was mounting that it was the lit windows attracting birds as there was a direct correlation between the windows with lighting and birds found under that specific area.

Certain bird species are overrepresented in collision statistics. Sparrows, finches and warblers account for greater numbers of deaths. Weather factors also play a role; low cloud ceiling nights see higher incidences of strikes as the light pollution spread reaches a greater area. Why birds are attracted to light at night, like moths, is still a mystery that ornithologists are trying to solve.

Building strike statistics can now be gathered via an online platform created by New York City Audubon, dBird.org. Since 1997 NYC Audubon has monitored collisions in the city with volunteers collecting birds from around buildings early in the morning for their Project Safe Flight program. In 2014, NYC Audubon launched dBird.org as a new tool. An online crowd-sourced data collection tool, dBird.org provides a way for the public to report incidents of dead and injured birds.

In 2020, dBird.org was updated and expanded as part of Seattle Audubon’s Bird-safe Cities program. Now Audubon chapters and other organizations across North America can use dBird.org to report and manage bird mortality data within their own regions to gain a truly national picture of bird mortality from collision.

While much of the focus is on larger buildings, simply turning out outdoor lights and lights in unused rooms during peak migration is an easy way to prevent migration collision. For daytime collisions, breaking up reflections with UV stickers that birds can see but are fairly invisible to our eyes is the best. Patterned blinds or shades, screens and scrims all break up reflections.

Place bird feeders correctly—very close within four feet of windows— so a startled bird doesn’t build up enough speed to injure themselves or far away from the building (20-30 feet) so they have time to deflect. A little attention on the part of each of us will go a long way to creating a safer passage for birds on their migration journey.

Achievement requires persistence C ongratulations for graduating from high school. Parents and teachers celebrate your academic attainments and for attaining goals they believe are important.

Achievements require initiative and resilience, curiosity and compassion, imagination, sometimes teamwork, always critical thinking and strong communication skills. Achievement requires us to wonder, to tolerate ambiguity, to take a chance, to risk failure in pursuit of a greater goal. A mentor once advised me, “Secure your footing before you extend your reach, but reach.”

This is a time, perhaps more than ever, that requires creative approaches to solving problems. Unlike many, I do not think of this as the “information age;” it is the “imagination age.” In fact, I think the two most important aspects of learning are imagination and history: how to imagine “what if?” or “what about?” and to understand what came before,because it is that on which we will build in approaching the future.

Imagination permits us to see patterns, to see where they diverge and where they converge. It requires us to listen, to understand, to tolerate the silence and to comprehend before we respond.

One of my favorite quotes is from the author James Baldwin, who commented on the“questions hidden by answers.” Often, when someone proposes a solution, I will say,“That’s an answer, what’s the question?” Clarify the question. Remember the wise one who asked his child each day not, “What did you learn today?” but “What questions did you ask today?”

In achieving as you have, you have learned how to use your time and your talents. To date, you have probably thought of achievements as for individual gain, but increasingly you will be called upon to think of the common good, of others beyond yourself.

Most graduates are going to college. I am sure that you and your parents have had conversations and expressed concerns about costs and the possibilities of a job upon commencement, and how these two concerns will affect what you may study.

I believe that students are more likely to succeed in their studies if they pursue something for which they have a passion. This means that if the passion is for dance, or art, or anthropology instead of pre-medicine or accounting, students are more likely to be motivated, serious, inquisitive and successful in their studies. When I say this to parents, it captures their at-

tention, and I quickly make the next point.

Students should seek opportunities for internships in business, government, or non-profit organizations to learn and enhance job-readiness skills or graduate school preparation.

This combination of pursuing one’s passion as well as internships in the “real world,”supervised placements in combination with a field of study, helps prepare students for the first job, the start of a career or series of careers and graduate or professional school.

Studying in another culture is an

important part of your next steps. After all, your college experience should be as much about developing your character and becoming an informed citizen as it is about learning about commerce and launching a career. You need to know about compassion and community as well as competition if you are to be fulfilled as a human.

The third point I make is about the “fit” between the student and the college. You have probably asked yourself questions about where you will succeed, where you will feel both comfortable and challenged.

“Fit” includes cost and affordability because it makes little sense to graduate with excessive debt. Fit includes an active campus life for a student whose pillow may be at home and not in a residential hall, for extracurricular life is important as a supplement to classroom learning. Life and work skills are developed in clubs, sports teams and student government organizations, and students should have the opportunity to participate no matter where they live.

Other signs of “fit” include the friendliness and degree of caring by other students, faculty, and staff; the condition of facilities and grounds and the record for safety; faculty priorities for teaching and advising; the availability of financial aid, internships,

and work with faculty on their research; institutional values for energy efficiency; and civic engagement. Students should be challenged intellectually and in other ways, to be sure, to learn outside their “comfort zone,” but the environment should be nurturing and supportive as well as challenging.

You are set apart from others now and we celebrate you. Long Island needs you to foster its organic growth as a place of economic, cultural and civic vitality. The world needs you to keep growing, to build on the foundation you have begun. We need you to maintain your optimism and to explore your special gifts for the good of family, community, and humanity. You can do this through both basic acts such as volunteering and voting, and grander acts of commitment for bettering the lot of others.

You are to be the author of your life, not an actor in another’s script.

Achievement carries with it responsibility, but also the joy and challenge of continuing to grow, develop, and live life to its fullest. You have secured your footing; now extend your reach.

LIRR schedule puts Glen Cove on wrong track

D

one correctly, direct Long Island Rail Road access to Manhattan’s East Side will be a tremendous catalyst for the prosperity of our region. Unless the proposed schedule for the Oyster Bay line is revised, however, I am deeply concerned that the City of Glen Cove’s ongoing revitalization will be left waiting at the station.

Upon the completion of the nearly $12 billion East Side Access capital project, LIRR trains will have direct access to the new Grand Central Madison terminal between 43rd and 48th streets starting this December, according to MTA officials. But under draft schedules that were published earlier this month, Oyster Bay line commuters — including many residents of the City of Glen Cove — would

be forced to contend with disruptions to well-established, cohesive service to Manhattan, Long Island City, and especially Brooklyn.

The current proposed schedule eliminates the busiest weekday trains leaving Penn Station and Brooklyn at 4:54 p.m. and 4:56 p.m., respectively, and replaces them with 4:23 p.m. and 5:22 p.m. trains.

For morning commuters, it eliminates the three-way transfer option that allows commuters through Jamaica station to easily access the Brooklyn Atlantic Terminal, Manhattan’s Penn Station or Long Island City’s Hunters Point Avenue terminal. Worse yet, it eliminates many timed connections at Jamaica, increases wait times at a transfer hub that is ill-equipped to be a waiting area for commuters, and

requires riders to use a far-flung track to catch a train to Brooklyn.

Reliable, logical mass transit is essential if we are to maintain the appeal of Glen Cove’s residential housing stock for young professionals who rely on train service for their employment. Glen Cove has added more than 700 apartments in recent years and has another 800 to 1,000 units in the pipeline as a central component of its ongoing revitalization plan.

Any disruption to mass transit service will have a ripple effect that will surely be felt in our city and in communities all along the Oyster Bay line, and those impacts will be magnified by the dearth of peak express train service on the Port Washington line. Both issues must be addressed before schedules are finalized.

Without question, East Side Access is a major step forward for the tristate area that ameliorates one of the largest gaps in mass transit service to and from Long Island. However, this progress should not come at the expense of commuters who rely upon the Oyster Bay line. I urge residents to make their voices heard during the MTA’s upcoming July 13 virtual public feedback meeting on the proposed schedule. From there, the MTA must apply the feedback they receive toward devising a more equitable and cohesive plan.

MY FATHER’S PLACE COMES TO GLEN COVE

When My Father’s Place on Bryant Avenue in Roslyn closed in 1987, owner Michael “Eppy” believed that it would never spring back to life anywhere else.

After returning the storied name to the Long Island area four years ago at the Roslyn Hotel, Epstein knows generations have missed out on witnessing the magic that often came to the venue.

“I had this idiosyncrasy that the club will only be successful in Roslyn and that’s what I told The New York Times,” Epstein said. “But you know what? I finally did it and realize now it was a phobia that ridiculously wasted 35 years of my life and the life of a whole generation that never went to the club because they were too young.”

The original My Father’s Place drew some of the biggest names in music from 1971 until it closed in 1987.

Michael Epstein is seen behind the bar in the original My Father’s Place. (Photo by Steve Rosenfield) The concert hall next to Diane’s Bakery & Cafe on Bryant Avenue hosted prominent acts as they were making their way toward stardom, including Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen and The Ramones.

Epstein recently opened his doors and started putting on shows in May at The Metropolitan in Glen Cove, where he lives. One of the first acts to perform in the 150-seat venue was Jeff Skunk Baxter, a former member of Steely Dan for their first three albums before joining the Doobie Brothers in 1974.

The Glen Cove location features a similar system that My Father’s Place used at the Roslyn Hotel and Bryant Avenue, dinner theater in a venue that resembles a supper club.

Patrons purchase tickets for the musical act Friday, Saturday and Monday nights and can order food and drinks à la carte.

“They’re very nice and I’m very happy with them,” Epstein said of The Metropolitan ownership, specifically Raj and Rekha Maini.

My Father’s Place at the Roslyn Hotel stopped performing shows on March 17, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Epstein told Blank Slate Media last August that he was looking to renegotiate the terms of the contract he originally signed in 2017 when he reopened the legendary venue in a joint agreement with the hotel.

Epstein said as president of Roz Lyn Entertainment Corp., the entity in charge of My Father’s Place, he wanted to increase his company’s share of the venue’s food and alcohol sales, which is currently 10%. While the final

percentage is up for negotiation, Epstein said he also wants to give up his 5% share of the revenue from the hotel restaurant, 1221 at MFP. Alex Ewen, CEO of Roz Lyn Entertainment, said in an August 2021 e-mail that Epstein is not an operator, president, officer or employee of Roz Lyn Entertainment.

Epstein disputed Ewen’s claims around the same time, saying he is the operator of My Father’s Place and president of Roz Lyn Entertainment.

My Father’s Place’s upcoming show, which

can be found on their Facebook and website, features China Crisis, a Merseyside, England act with 11 U.K. Top 50 singles and three U.K Top 40 albums, as well as commercial success in Western Europe, Australia and the Americas.

Epstein said he has had people come from as far as Kentucky to see a show at the venue and catch their favorite acts during the Northeast part of their respective tours.

On July 30, Robert Gordon, a rockabilly musician who revived the genre into the mainstream in the ‘70s, is scheduled to perform.

Important reasons to visit a primary care physician I

t is vital to make personal health a priority. Despite that widely accepted truth, far too often people delay trips to see their doctors. The coronavirus pandemic only compounded this issue.

An April 2020 report from Modern Healthcare found roughly one in three Americans delayed medical care as they coped with the financial loss and stress caused by COVID-19. I

nsufficient time to exercise often is the biggest obstacle for individuals looking to get in shape. There is no denying that life is busy, but it’s not impossible to find time to exercise, particularly when people engage in high intensity interval training, or H.I.I.T. H.I.I.T. incorporates effective movements in a 30-minute exercise routine. The American College of Sports Medicine says that H.I.I.T. has commanded a top spot on popular fitness trends lists since 2014. H.I.I.T. combines resistance training with aerobic exercises to produce a complete workout.

How does H.I.I.T. work?

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health says H.I.I.T. is a rigorous workout of interval training. It features several rounds that alternate between highintensity movements followed by shorter periods of lower-intensity exercises. This format enables the workout to increase the heart rate to at least 80 percent of a person’s maximum. H.I.I.T. programs are based on interval training first introduced in the 1950s to improve performance of elite Olympic athletes.

Examples of H.I.I.T. workouts

A person can use H.I.I.T. with any type of cardiovascular workout, whether stair climbing, rowing, running, or jumping rope. Higher intensity portions include working harder than one is used to for spurts of 30 seconds to three minutes,

according to WebMD. The times of “rest” aren’t completely rest, just lower intensity. The progress of the workout alternates accordingly. Most people quickly increase their heart rates and work up a sweat, which helps them lose weight and boost metabolism. The postworkout bonus includes burning calories for roughly two hours following an H.I.I.T. regimen.

Congestion pricing Heartfelt thanks to all the would hurt arts Floral Park residents

W

e are a middle-class senior couple who always belonged to the city’s museums and attended Broadway theater even when we were dating and attending NYU. The “Producers” at $400, then “Hamilton” at $1,000 stopped all of that. Paying a fee to drive below 60th street will impact restaurants and shops, as I believe many of us will pursue those activities where we live.

All the rhetoric about funneling the money to improve the subway will never happen as so many promises before like the Lottery and Offtrack betting going to education. Besides, subways are not safe, period.

Why hasn’t New York tried the

idea of only nighttime commercial deliveries? No recent mayor has demanded the police enforce the traffic, parking regulations like Koch and Rudy. Remember the mostly women in brown uniforms ticketing? Or the tow trucks lurking to take the cars to the pound? Remember the campaign, “Don’t even think about it”? FedEx, UPS, limos, Uber drivers all double park without getting a ticket or even a hassle.

Michael Bloomberg and Bill De Blasio never even tried so now the governor/mayor want to further tax the middle and working classes.

o the Residents of Floral Park, As I finish up what has been 11 consecutive years of service for the Floral Park Bellerose School District (Two as PTA treasurer and nine as a member of the Board of Education), serving as trustee, vice president and board president, along with combining the last five years pulling double duty as a trustee on the HS board advocating on behalf of Floral Park Memorial students and parents, I just wanted to say it has been an honor to serve the wonderful residents of this district.

I was fortunate enough to be elected back in 2013 and learn from some amazing board members, such as David Fowler, Laura Ferrone, Denise Dellacorte Steven M Walk and Jenell Horan. Board members who Great Neck learned from folks like Bob Burke and Archie Chang and continued the mission that started back in 1894, when the first group of trustees formed the Board of Education, a board that included John Lewis Childs.

And although the names and faces

might have changed over the years, the overall mission never did, and that was to keep pushing the district and our amazing children and staff to achieve more.

ov. Kathy Hochul and MTA Chairman Janno Lieber’s recent announcement concerning significant service improvements upon the initiation of LIRR East Side Access service to Grand Central Terminal, promised to start in December 2022, was less than candid.

Only MTA Vice President Jelyan Handler was honest when he said “upon completion of East Side Access, a significant number of trains will be removed from Penn Station.”

The LIRR has promised to increase the number of Manhattan-bound peak AM trains from 113 to 159 and Long Island-bound peak PM trains from 98 to 158.

What they omitted is that there will continue to be no room to run

additional trains into or out of Penn Station during rush hours via the East River tunnels with connections to Long Island. This has been the case for decades. Three of four tunnels running inbound mornings and outbound evening rush hours have tight spacing between trains. One tunnel is shared by the LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak for reverse train movements with equally tight spacing during rush hours.

There is no platform capacity at Penn Station to accommodate additional trains during rush hour. Penn Station operates at 100 percent capacity. If one of the four tunnels is temporarily out of service, the result is numerous delays and cancellation of trains. Amtrak plans on removing one

The district only thrives when all of those components work together for the betterment of the district and the children.

The Floral Park school district will always be a special place, and I wish nothing but the best to the current board, as they continue to work hard as part of that team to build lasting memories for today’s students.

The LIRR will have to cancel and combine numerous trains to and from Penn Station during this time while Amtrak performs major reconstruction. Make garden tour annual

T

hank you, Mindy Germain, Port Water District commissioner, and ReWild Long Island for creating the Sustainable Garden Tour. The Port Washington Water District, as part of its “Do It for Port” water conservation campaign, invited PW residents to take place in a show and tell of some of our neighbors’ Earth friendly landscapes.

It was well worth my time. My husband and I spent a glorious morning learning about native plant gardening, picking up water conservation tips and connecting with our environmentally conscious neighbors.

In our own home, we are compost-

ing, using a water barrel, and are finally in the process of purchasing a smart controller for our irrigation system (we are eligible to receive a $150 rebate through the PWWD!). We will be saving on our water bills and protecting our sole source aquifer in our lovely coastal community of Port. And if we can do it, anyone can.

It is so easy.

I hope this Sustainable Garden Tour 2022 becomes an annual event in Port, and like a beautiful perennial garden, spreads across all of Nassau County.

Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and FHA needed Interest rates have doubled over the last eight months, closing the door on our lowest interest rates in history and hitting bottom during the Covid-19 pandemic between 2020-2021. It was meant to be a temporary stopgap measure to salvage our ailing economy that was literally shut down due to the pandemic. However, rates actually dropped much lower than I and many economists anticipated and at their lowest point averaged 2.65%.

If you had applied for a $200,000 mortgage, the monthly cost would have been $806, which would have been $662, or $7,900 savings per year, compared to the overall normal long-term average rate of 8%. However, from 1971 through June 2022, 30-year fixed rate mortgages averaged 7.77%, according to Freddie Mac. What are the differences between Freddie Mac, (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) started in 1938 to stimulate and encourage homeownership) and FHA (Federal Housing Administration) backed loans secured by Ginnie Mae and insured and guaranteed

by H.U.D./Housing Urban Development Corporation?

Freddie Mac often buys loans from smaller banks and Fannie Mae purchases mortgages from larger commercial banks and lenders and they both have different requirements for the mortgages they purchase and both are GSE’s (government-backed enterprises) created

by Congress to enable the flow of money, liquidity, stability and affordability.

Loans are packaged into mortgage-backed securities for sale to investors on the secondary mortgage market. This process enables the guarantee of the timely payments of principal and interest on the underlying mortgages. This makes secondary mortgage markets more liquid and lowers the interest rates paid by mortgage borrowers, which would be considerably higher without them.

Minimum credit scores required are 620 and debt/income ratios up to 49%. Credit between 620 and 640 may take longer to obtain loans than higher scores. However, FHA loans can potentially be done with credit scores as low as 500, but dif-

ferent terms and conditions will apply. Without these organizations mortgage interest rates to purchase homes would be considerably higher.

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA mortgages are more lenient and allow many who have lower credit scores or lower down payments to as little as 3%. Buyers who would not normally be approved for a conventional mortgage, which

requires a 20% out-of-pocket down payment, may still be able to secure a home loan. However, an added cost is P.M.I. (private mortgage insurance) when less than the normally required 20% down payment is provided by the purchaser. H.U.D. thereby guarantees the loan. This program allows more individuals and families to qualify to purchase a home and who without it would not. Other terms are as follows: 1.) Terms of up to 30 years 2.) No income limit 3.) Down payment and reserves can be gifted 4.) One buyer has to be a firsttime purchaser as long as that person had no ownership within the last three years 5.) Loans have to conform to GSE guidelines Don’t lose hope due to higher rates that you can’t or won’t be able to qualify and realize your dream of homeownership for a single family, condo or coop (but not FHA on coops) under Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Obviously, paying rent month in and month out is a dead end street and provides no increase in your wealth and actually depletes

Surgical Center to break ground in Glen Cove Leaders from Northwell Health,Glen Cove Hospital and the community gathered at a groundbreaking ceremony on June 14 to thank benefactors Iris and Saul Katz for their transformational gift toward building the Katz Women’s Surgical Center at Glen Cove Hospital.

The new surgical center will be focused on creating a destination that provides state-of-the-art surgery for women and thoughtful patientcentered care. The center is designed to support women in addressing their unique physical and psychological needs throughout the surgical journey.

The estimated $10-million, 25,000-square-foot project includes a separate entrance with an expected opening in late 2024. Developed in partnership with the Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health, the new women’s surgical center includes up to 32 private recovery and care bays. This stylish, modern facility will provide patients with a setting that is tranquil and welcoming, coupled with concierge-level service.

Mr. and Mrs. Katz, who have lived in Glen Cove for more than 50 years, have raised three children and have eight grandchildren. “We have visited the hospital so many times – we are glad to have such an excellent and continually evolving hospital in our backyard,” the couple said. “We are delighted to support the new women’s surgical center, which will

provide comprehensive care to meet women’s specific surgical needs as well as provide emotional support for patients in the region and beyond.”

For nearly 40 years, Saul Katz has been deeply invested in the strength, growth and vitality not only of Glen Cove Hospital, but of Northwell Health. He is a member and past chairman of Northwell’s board of trustees and served as a trustee at Glen Cove Hospital.

Recognizing disparities in health care for women and men, Mr. and Mrs. Katz together founded KIWH 14 years ago and endowed the institute with an additional gift in 2020. Mrs. Katz was the champion behind creating the KIWH. “Women are so different. Our bodies are different and so are our hearts and lungs,” she said.

“We were understudied, undertreated and misdiagnosed. Women must be taken care of differently. Women deserve more.”

Patients will be escorted by a staff member to services at every point in their care, highlighted by specialized nurse navigators. Private patient parking also will be available.

A separate entrance will be created so women and their loved ones will have access to a dedicated reception area and well-appointed lounge.

The center offers the latest surgical treatments utilizing robotic and minimally invasive approaches to surgery. Comprehensive services for breast cancer, reconstructive and

cosmetic breast surgeries, including preventative mastectomy, are also available. Advanced robot-assisted surgery for mastectomy and breast reconstruction, including a flap procedure that uses a women’s own tissue, or implant-based reconstruction are offered. Also provided will be surgery for gynecological, urological and thyroid and parathyroid gland disease, as well as procedures for skin cancer.

“This women’s surgical center is the first of its kind for Northwell and the region, and we are designing a model of care that could serve as a national destination,” said Neil Tanna, MD,vice president of the Katz Women’s Surgical Center at Glen Cove Hospital. “The program is multidisciplinary, yet integrated with a team of experts who provide the highest quality, patient-centered, female-focused surgical care.”

Mr. and Mrs. Katz’s generous gift is recognized as part of their larger vision for the KIWH and the ongoing transformation of women’s health across the health system.

“When you look across the county, there are very few separate centers of excellence for women’s surgery,” said Kerri Anne Scanlon, executive director of Glen Cove Hospital. “The Katz Women’s Surgical Center will be a fully integrated destination, providing excellent surgical and medical care, coupled with superb service under one roof. This entire project is

so meaningful to the community and personal for the Katz family. This is their hospital, and a gift of this magnitude means everything to Glen Cove. We will forever be grateful for Iris and Saul’s tremendous generosity and kindness, and their desire to advance care for women.”

Together, the Katzes have made it their mission to support women’s health at every age and stage. In addition to creating the Katz Institute for Women’s Health, their longtime philanthropy made it possible to

build the Katz Women’s Hospital at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Katz Women’s Hospital at North Shore University Hospital.

“We believe that we are in a movement,” Saul Katz said. “As New York’s largest health system, whatever Northwell does, others will follow our lead.” Mrs. Katz added, “We believe others will see what we’re doing to tailor health care for women’s needs. Scott B. Silverberg New exec at Guidance Center on estate council Scott B. Silverberg has become a member of The Estate Planning Council of Nassau County, a member chapter of the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils.

Membership in the council is very selective. In recent years, Silverberg has become a member of the National Board of Directors of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Chapter of NAELA. He attained his L.L.M. in Elder Law from the prestigious Stetson University School of Law. North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center has announced that Jennifer Rush has joined the organization as associate executive director.

Rush will be reporting to Executive Director/CEO Kathy Rivera.

Rush began her career at the Foundation for Childhood Development in New York as a research assistant, where she explored case studies of how systems support children to reach their full potential.

She has a diverse operations background in medical, educational and community-based services, including hospital and substance abuse settings at Northern Berkshire Healthcare and the Brattleboro Retreat.

Most recently, Rush was the Vice President of Residential and Clinical Services at Berkshire County Arc in Pittsfield, Mass., where she oversaw all residential services, including the autism outreach services program and the brain injury services program.

“With more than 28 years of leadership experience in nonprofit, residential and health care settings, Jennifer has extensive experience working with adults, children and families in mental health and substance use,” said Kathy Rivera. “Her impressive level of knowledge, skill and expertise sets the stage for continued growth and expansion of the Guidance Center and will help strengthen our services across the agency.”

“I am excited to have returned to New York to work at the Guidance Center and find ways to further support the agency’s goal of bringing hope and healing to children and families,” said Rush. “I am also eager to support the Guidance Center’s incredibly dedicated employees who provide their clients with compassionate, high-quality ser-

Rush, who holds a B.A. from Barnard College and a Master of Health Care Administration from Seton Hall University, moved from the Berkshires region of Massachusetts to Long Island’s North Shore in May 2022.

Why the rush to change town map?

Democrat Town Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey said the redistricting was based on data and took into account what the different laws require.

“I think this process is not about any one of us or protecting incumbencies,” Lurvey said. “This process was based on numbers, statistics and the seven principles that have been provided. Creating a minoritymajority district, including united communities of interest and all the seven principles.

I think that’s more important than protecting my seat or any one of our seats.”

Lurvey also offered no proof and, like DeSena, asked us to trust her word at a time when trust is in short supply in the Town of North Hempstead.

DeSena’s commitment to non-partisan redistricting will be tested in the coming months when the Nassau County Legislature begins redistricting the

county maps.

Democratic New York legislators failed that test this year when a non-partisan redistricting commission that included Martins was unable to reach an agreement on new maps for Congress, the state Assembly and the state Senate.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature came up with a map that would likely have given Democrats all but three congressional seats.

But that map was tossed out by a state judge and a state master revised the map to put eight seats into play.

Many Republican-controlled states have had greater success in gerrymandering congressional districts than Democratic-dominated states.

We would have liked to have seen North Hempstead Democrats set an example for everyone by allowing more discussion on the town’s new map.

But sadly they wouldn’t even wait another two weeks to vote on a plan.

12th annual Katie’s Run returns Sunday Continued from Page 1 Katie’s Run is returning for its 12th annual running through New Hyde Park Sunday, June 26.

The run is sponsored by the Katie McBride Foundation, which the family created to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Metro in the village, where the McBrides stayed while Katie received treatment for Burkitt lymphoma, a rare childhood cancer.

Katie died in March 2008 at age 11. Her 26th birthday would have been June 18.

Last year the run returned after being canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but to lower numbers than expected, McBride said. Sunday will mark the return to the regular schedule the village has come to know. including the 5K run, two-mile walk and post-run festival featuring a barbecue, children’s activities and a short “fun run” to the 5K finish line.

“That’s my favorite part of my day—the kids are so determined,” McBride said. “We give them bibs, a medal afterward and these really tiny tots just go and you can see their faces of determination getting across the finish line.”

To make registration easier on the day of the run, the foundation is allowing participants to pick up their bibs and race packets in the lobby of the New Hyde Park Funeral Home, which McBride owns, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. McBride also said this year there will not be a pre-race pasta dinner the Friday before the race, but he plans on bringing it back in the future.

There are four categories of entrance fees for the run: Super Early Bird (by 5/31) $25; Early Bird (by 6/8) $30; Advance (by 6/25) $35;Day-Of (on 6/26) $40. The prime source of funding is donations.

Katie’s Run has raised $432,500 overall since 2010 with $160,000 going to the Ronald McDonald House and $272,500 for other charities, scholarships and families in need, according to the Katie McBride Foundation’s website.

In 2014, the Ronald McDonald House dedicated its new Katie McBride Fitness Center with funds raised from Katie’s Run, which McBride said was a crowning achievement aside from helping families.

“It’s been very special,” McBride said.

The foundation gives five scholarships each year to graduating seniors from New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Chaminade High School and East Islip High School, McBride said.

Katie’s Run has raised $100,000 for the Ronald McDonald House since 2010 and $120,000 more for other local charities, scholarships and families in need, according to the Katie McBride Foundation’s website.

Wood is a CPA and accounting executive who previously worked as chief tax compliance officer and vice president of Lexington Realty Trust, the same firm he served as chief accounting officer during his 30-year tenure.

Wood will not receive a raise in his current salary and is expected to be removed from the acting comptroller position when a permanent comptroller is hired.

The town’s previous comptroller and deputy comptroller resigned prior to DeSena taking office and the Town Board has been in the interview process after they previously posted the position.

The position of highway superintendent has been left vacant since the May 19 meeting when Town Board Democrats voted to table the appointment of former Highway Superintendent Thomas Tiernan and to remove acting Highway Superintendent Harry Weed.

Following the completion of the rest of the agenda, the board calledan executive session to receive legal advice on the Ritz-Carlton matter.

The next Board of Trustees meeting for North Hills will be held on July 20 at 7:30 p.m.

It will take place at the Village Hall.

A Pride Month celebration, hosted

by North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Council Member Mariann Dalimonte, and the town tigieg on her graduation from the board, will be held at Town Hall on U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Monday, June 27 at 11 a.m. Residents are invited to attend the free event, Saturday. which will feature live entertainment, refreshments, giveaways, and more.

“North Hempstead is a community that embraces diversity and inclusion for all, and I am proud that the Town will once again be hosting this celebration,” said DeSena. “Although much has been accomplished in the fight against injustice and inequalities, there is much that needs to be achieved. I am delighted that the town will partner Be the Rainbow on this event.”

The event is being held in conjunction with Be the Rainbow, a local Port Washington based group that advocates for love, self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The Town is proud to be hosting this celebration and join together with residents to advocate for equal opportunities and justice for all,” said Dalimonte. “Thank you to Be the Rainbow for their advocacy and dedication to

educating the community.”

The town hall will also be lit up from June 24 through the end of June to celebrate Pride Month.

North Hempstead to host upcoming S.T.O.P. event North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and the Town Board remind residents that the next Stop Throwing Out Pollutants will be held on Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Westbury High School (1 Post Road, Old Westbury).

“Improperly disposing of dangerous chemical wastes could potentially contaminate our water supply, so programs like S.T.O.P. are essential to continue to ensure the Town and our residents are responsible environmental stewards,” DeSena said. “I’m proud that the Town will once again offer this amazing program that offers our residents a safe, convenient, and environmentally sound method of disposing their hazardous household waste.”

The S.T.O.P. program offers

Town of North Hempstead residents the opportunity to dispose of dangerous and chemical wastes that are too hazardous for routine curbside pickups. Returnable items include aerosols, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, fertilizers, bulbs, thermostats, rechargeable and lithium batteries, TV’s and computers. Latex and water-based paints, once dried out (usually 2436 hours after the lid is removed) can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage and will not be accepted at the S.T.O.P. collection site.

Oil-based paints, on the other hand, are considered hazardous, and qualify at any S.T.O.P. program.

Residents may also bring their sensitive documents to the S.T.O.P. event for proper shredding and de-

struction to prevent identity theft.

They will be shredded on site by a document shredding company.

There is a limit of 6 “Bankers Box” sized boxes or bags of paper per car, per day. For every 2,000 pounds of paper the Town recycles equates to 17 trees saved.

Pharmaceuticals will not be accepted at S.T.O.P. events, however the Town will be collecting pharmaceuticals at “Shed the Meds” events.

The next event will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Michael

J. Tully Park located at 1801 Evergreen Avenue, New Hyde Park.

The S.T.O.P. events will also have a clothing donation area. Gently used and working clothes, stuffed animals, electronics, toys, sporting equipment, shoes, books, small area rugs, bikes, scooters, luggage, picture frames, table lamps, bolts of fabric, silverware, glassware, dishes, and cosmetics will be collected.

Participants must be residents of North Hempstead (no commercial vehicles will be allowed) and need

to show a driver’s license or other valid proof of residency. Only potentially hazardous household products and e-waste will be accepted.

For safety reasons, residents also must remain in their vehicle while event staff removes items to be discarded. Please also leave pets at home so staff can safely remove items from your vehicle.

Additional S.T.O.P programs will be held throughout 2022 including: Sunday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot), and Sunday, November 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot).

Grades: 2-4. Join professional magician Ari Bisk and learn beginner magic tricks to perform for your friends and family! After each trick Ari will teach the secrets and how to perform them. It is recommended that participants have a deck of playing cards.

Under the Sea Stuffed Animal Workshop — All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, June 30 at 5 p.m. Grades: K-4. Participants will hand stuff a 16″ toy animal and dress it. 4 families enjoy state championship glory twice

BY M I C H A E L J . L E W I S Hunter Panzik is a highly-successful lacrosse player for Manhasset, a leader and scholar who’s headed to the Air Force Academy next year.

But still, any athlete gets stressed sometimes during a game. Fortunately for Hunter, whenever that happened this season, he only had to look a few feet away for a guy on the team who could calm him down.

A guy who lives in the same house and shared the same toys when they were toddlers.

Logan Panzik also stars for the Indians, and among other roles this season, he was the No.1 Hunter relaxer.

“He was definitely the guy who made me chill and could always offer a few words that made the situation better,” Hunter Panzik said in a recent video interview, as Logan listened in and smiled.

“The guy can always put a smile on your face and make you laugh, no matter what is going on.

“Always.”

That’s what brothers and sisters do: They know you better than you know yourself. And the Panzik’s experience this year with Manhasset lacrosse was far, far from unique.

Anyone looking at the rosters of the two state championship teams from Manhasset lacrosse this spring would see last names duplicated. A lot.

There are four sets of siblings on the two Manhasset varsity teams, and nine kids altogether have a housemate on the boys or girls team (the Panziks have two boys and a girl on the teams).

The Panzik family produced Hunter, a senior, and Logan, a junior, on the boys team, with little sister Shea being a sophomore on the girls squad.

The Perfettos boast senior Matt on the boys team and sophomore Lauren on the female team.

Then there is the Chun clan, senior Connor and sophomore Maddie, and finally the Leders, with senior Patrick and junior Cate (Interestingly, in each case the male sibling is the older player; a few of the girls interviewed said they definitely were influenced to play by tagging along to their brothers’ games as kids.)

Four homes with two (or three) state champs, winning on the same day. Safe to say June 11,

2022 will be legendary in those families forever.

It is an astonishing amount of familial success in one sense, because it’s hard to make the varsity in a town as lacrosse-obsessed as Manhasset, so a family doing it with multiple kids seems impressive.

On the other hand, though, maybe it’s not that surprising, since all four families interviewed for this story said that lacrosse was basically expected of them from the time they left their cribs.

“Lacrosse has been so ingrained in the culture of this town, that no matter what gender or ethnicity you are, at some point you’re going to play,” Connor Chun said.

“It’s inevitable,” added Lauren Perfetto.

“Whether you have siblings who play like I did, or not, it’s just what you do here. And for me, seeing my brothers play, made me want to play as soon as I could.”

All the brother/sister combos admitted that the sibling rivalry is there in lacrosse, as it is in

other aspects of their lives together. But several of the players said because the two sports are so different, there wasn’t a lot of tactical conversation around the dinner table.

“It’s really a different sport, so it was more about me learning hard work and leadership from them,” Shea Panzik said. “The competitive part of me always wanted to keep up with them.”

“Kind of incredible how tough she is,” Logan said admiringly. “She gave it back to us as much as we did to her.”

As the high school playoffs progressed this spring, the level of awareness of the other Manhasset teams’ success varied wildly among the sibling groups.

Some were completely aware of what special thing may happen.

“Oh definitely we talked about it, me and Cate,” Patrick Leder said. “We saw especially as the teams were peaking at the right time, we knew it was a strong possibility and we were so

excited about it.”

Others, well, not so much. Matt Perfetto, who was also a leader on Manhasset’s state title-winning boys basketball team in March, said he was so locked in and focused on what he and his mates were doing in lacrosse that he “had no idea” the girls state championship game would be on the same day, a revelation that draw a laugh and an eye roll from Lauren during a recent FaceTime interview.

“Well, I was thinking about it,” Lauren said with a smile. “I know our parents were definitely aware of it, and it was all very exciting to see both teams keep winning.”

The girls championship game was played at 2 p.m. in Cortland on June 11, while the boys game didn’t start until after 6 p.m. at Hofstra. So you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that several of the older brothers said they were definitely watching the girls team on livestream while preparing for the biggest game of their lives.

“I was watching a lot of the first half on my phone, and I was happy they were up big,” Matt Perfetto said. “It was definitely motivating for me that she was going to win one, definitely made me want to make sure we won as well.”

In the end, with their parents’ attention divided, there was little drama in either game. The girls crushed Honoeye Falls-Lima, 17-2, while the boys cruised to a 13-5 victory over Westhill.

The celebrations went on for days afterward; two of the female players interviewed said when they got back to school after the drive from Cortland fans were waiting and celebrating both titles.

“It’s pretty wild, and growing up with these people forever, it’s pretty amazing we can all do this at the same time, both winning titles,” Patrick Leder said. “You grow up here, and since first grade, second grade, these are the kids you see at all the practices, the PAL games, all of that. And that we got to experience this together it was just really cool.”

Setting the pace at state track championships

He’s competed in so many meets for the Schreiber High School track and field team over the past few years, running the 800, the 1,600, the 4×800 meter relay, you name it, the speedster has done it.

So when it came to the state track and field championships on June 10-11, he was ready to put on one last, great set of performances, and finish with a flourish.

And that he did. In a near-perfect finish to a glorious career, Funk put up three Top 8 finishes for the Vikings. His 1:54.78 in the 800 meters was good for fourth overall in the state, while his 1,600 meter time of 4:14.27 placed him fifth.

Then Funk and teammates Max Meehan, Terrence McGinty and Kevin Taylor finished seventh overall in the 4×800 relay, running it in 7:56.79.

Funk’s performances were a highlight of area

“I was very surprised and very excited,” Romano said. “Coach Capo (Robert Capobianco and Coach (D.J.) Paulson were more excited than I was, even, they were jumping up and down and congratulating me. I really was just hoping to get maybe Top 10. I had so much help from those coaches and coach Tim Schwalm at the beginning of the year.”

The Wheatley School had another outstanding performance at states, with the girls 4×800 team finishing third in Division 2, and 12th overall. The foursome of Juliana Mendes, Emmie Keys, Caitlin O’Keefe and Caroline O’Brien ran a 9:46.93.

Also shining at states was Manhasset’s Paul Park, who came in fifth in the triple jump (42’7″) and eighth in triple jump (20’10.5″) Sydney Romano throwing the discus en route to a third-place finish at the state track and field championship meet on June 10-11 in Syracuse.

Manhasset lacrosse teams honored with parade

BY M I C H A E L J . L E W I S “We can’t all be heroes,” the famous writer and humorist Will Rogers once said, “because somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by.”

On a sun-splashed holiday Monday afternoon, the newest heroes of Manhasset heard applause from hundreds of residents standing on the curb as a parade honoring them drove through town.

The Manhasset boys and girls lacrosse teams, fresh off their June 11 state Class C championship wins, were honored by Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead with a pullout-all-the-stops parade and celebration.

Riding in the flatbeds of four trucks from the high school parking lot, down Plandome Road and past local landmarks like Orlando’s Deli and Gino’s Pizza, the victorious players soaked in the love from little kids, senior citizens, and everyone in between.

“You dream about that moment since you’re a little kid,” said senior Hunter Panzik, who was leaving the next day after the parade to start life in the Air Force Academy. “To have it all happen and so many people came out and cheering, it was so great.”

Everywhere you looked there were

signposts of Manhasset’s love of lacrosse, its past here and its future. Along with the four trucks carrying the players, there were bagpipers, fire engines and police cars, sirens blaring, the only thing louder than the cheers.

There were seven young boys, flanked by girls head coach Meg Clarke and boys head coach Keith Cromwell, carrying a banner down the street that read “Titletown.” Future Manhasset Indian lacrosse players, in all likelihood.

There were members of older generations, talking about former Indians lacrosse superstars like Vinnie Sombrotto.

And there were dozens of community members wearing Manhasset lacrosse shirts with the numbers 4 and 44 on the back, along with the initials RK, MF and JF, honoring the three young men and former Manhasset lacrosse players who were killed in a car accident last summer, Ryan Kiess, James Farrell and Michael Farrell.

As the trucks rolled through town, most of the players on both teams had wide-eyed expressions on their faces, soaking in the moment and looking a little shell-shocked as their friends and neighbors honored them. Every player wore a state championship T-shirt and

The celebration of the teams’ accomplishments was the second sports parade in town in 2022, following the celebration of the state-championshipwinning boys basketball team in March.

“Weren’t we just here a month and a half ago?” joked Nassau County Execu-

tive Bruce Blakeman, who presided over a short ceremony, along with other dignitaries like Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jen DeSena, following the parade that saw the players get official county citations for their achievements.

Later, Blakeman, with the players on both teams sitting behind him, reminded them to take a moment and

thank all those who helped them get there.

“You had a parent, a sibling, a teacher, a coach, a mentor that took part in your success,” Blakeman said.

“So when we conclude today, take a moment out and say thank you, because if it wasn’t for their support, you wouldn’t be here right now.”

For the players, Monday’s celebration was one final get-together of the 2022 season, one more chance to be with their brothers and sisters who they’d sweated with through long practices for months and months.

And also, it put an exclamation point on an incredible sports year for the town, following the tragedy last summer that touched so many.

“It’s so special,” said junior Alexandra Schneider. “The sport of lacrosse is so important here, and to have them do this for us and give us a chance to celebrate is really great.”

“It’s good to get back with all the boys and celebrate,” said Manhasset junior Cal Girard. “We’d been talking about this all season, about being brothers and getting to this point. And having a day like this, it makes you definitely hungry to win another (championship) next year.”

9 North Shore athletes Jack Petersen wins sign Letters of Intent Metzger MVP award Director of Athletics Don Lang proudly announced that nine North Shore High School senior athletes signed National Letters of Intent this Spring 2022.

A Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an institution. Once signed, the institution agrees to provide that student with financial aid (if eligible under the NCAA rules) for one academic year for that student’s agreement to attend the institution for one academic year.

Additionally, all colleges and universities that take part in the NLI program agree to not recruit these student-athletes once they sign the NLI. All the students, along with their families, expressed excitement and joy to achieve this impressive accomplishment after all of their hard work and dedication.

At the National Letters of Intent ceremony, Lang praised these student-athletes while thanking their parents and encouraging all those in the audience to recognize and celebrate their tremendous success.

In a game that was closely played until the fourth quarter, Manhasset High School defeated Mount Sinai High School 12-7 in the Class C 2022 Long Island Boys Lacrosse Championships at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday, June 4.

Junior midfielder Jack Petersen scored three goals and assisted on two additional goals to lead Manhasset and capture the game’s James C. Metzger MVP Award.

The award was presented by Metzger and Alan Hodish. Metzger, a 1970s Long Island lacrosse star and now a lacrosse benefactor, received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award as

outstanding Suffolk County player and then was an All-American at Hofstra University. A member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, Metzger is founder, chairman and CEO of Whitmore – The Agency, a leading insurance services and estate planning company in the New York metropolitan area that is headquartered in Garden City.

Hodish is a Garden City attorney and former football and lacrosse coach at Hempstead High School. Recently inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation’s Hall of Fame, he oversees the Hempstead PAL lacrosse program.
