Schreiber honors new grads Superintedent urges students to take risks BY ST E V E N K E E H N E R The Port Washington community celebrated the latest batch of Vikings to set sail for new adventures during the Paul D. Schreiber High School commencement ceremony. The weather, teetering between intense heat and threatening rain, couldn’t dampen the forecasted joyous mood on Thursday afternoon. Students and parents covered Seeber Field in a sea of Schreiber blue as loved ones cheered on the 420 grads. The school’s musicians gave performances, and many officials spoke at length. But student speaker Hannah Brooks’ commencement speech was the day’s high point. “We’ve been trained to sort the passing the time into chapters, episodes and acts. We can spot an ‘ending’ from a mile away. Our progress bars tell us there are only five minutes left and the main characters are putting on their caps and gowns,” she said. “So we know, more likely than not, the credits are supposed to roll soon.” The passing of time and celebrating it were the key themes of Brooks’ speech. She said that life is more like a scrapbook than a movie or television program. “We’re ever-growing with infinite blank pages ready to be added in and filled with possibility,” she said. “We’re connected to our past and because of Continued on Page 42

Major crime surges 75% in Nassau Third, Sixth Precincts see a 93% increase during three-month span compared to last year BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Major crimes for the first three months of 2022 int Nassau County increased by 75% compared to last year, according to statistics from the Nassau County Police Department. Statistics showed that 1,662 major crimes were committed throughout Nassau County from Jan. 1-Mar. 31, up from 950 crimes during the

same time frame last year. In Nassau’s Third and Sixth precincts, which make up a majority of North Shore communities, 645 major crimes occurred during the threemonth span this year, compared to 333 last year, an increase of 93%. The Third Precinct, located in Williston Park, serves the communities of Albertson, Bellerose Terrace, Bellerose Village, Carle Place, East

Garden City, East Meadow, East Williston, Floral Park Center, Garden City Park, Herricks, Mineola, New Cassel, New Hyde Park, North New Hyde Park, Roslyn Heights, Salisbury, Searingtown, Stewart Manor, Uniondale, Westbury, and Williston Park. The Sixth Precinct, located in Manhasset, serves the communities of East Hills, Flower Hill Great Neck Plaza, Harbor Hills, Manorhaven,

Munsey Park, North Hills, Plandome, Plandome Manor, Plandome Heights, Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, Roslyn Harbor, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock, Sea Cliff, Thomaston, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Great Neck, Greenvale, Manhasset, Roslyn Heights and University Gardens.
