‘FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON’

After garbage district request BY ST E P H E N ROMANO The Town of North Hempstead removed 50 garbage cans from Main Street in Port Washington last week in response to a request by the Port Washington Garbage District made in a letter sent in December. The garbage district approved a resolution in December to stop emptying the cans and suggested they be removed to help combat the community’s litter problem, according to a letter from the district to the town. In the letter sent to the town on Dec. 29, the district’s three commissioners said eliminating the garbage collection six times a week from the town-owned cans “will reduce tipping fees charged to the district.� The district suggested the town remove the cans to force business owners along Main Street to stop throwing personal garbage in the them. “Studies have been done through the country that Continued on Page 64

for the future, expressing their fondness for the home and sharing memories. “History will judge all of us on the actions or inactions we take today,â€? said Michael Scotto, a resident who has been outspoken about the preservation of the home. “The residents of the Village of Baxter Estates will fell the eect of a decision to demolish for many years to come.â€? Residents of Baxter

Estates and Port Washington, speaking in front of the village’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, condemned the home’s owner, Sabrina Wu, for not preserving the house before a ďŹ re signiďŹ cantly damaged the structure on Feb. 5. The commission was originally scheduled to review Wu’s application to demolish and rebuild the home, but after the ďŹ re village oďŹƒcials said Wu withdrew it.

A. Thomas Levin, Wu’s lawyer, said at the meeting that the application wasn’t entirely withdrawn. “It’s not exactly withdrawn, but we’re also not at this time proceeding with it,� Levin said. Levin said Wu will probably submit an application in the next several days. Levin, who spoke for 35 minutes, said Wu told the village she would revisit the idea of Continued on Page 64
