Roslyn to receive $1.9M more, 25.6% BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z State aid for public school districts on the North Shore of Nassau County in 2022-23 increased by more than 21 percent from the current year, according to statistics from the state legislation. The boost in state aid for the 11 public school districts on the North Shore is part of a record $457 million in extra financial aid for all Long Island public school districts included in the state’s budget, which was approved earlier this month. The cumulative rise in the 11 school districts is larger in percentage terms than the cumulative 16.52 percent increase for all Nassau County school districts. The largest dollar increase among the North Shore’s districts was a $9.67 million rise in Sewanhaka’s state aid. In 2021-22, according to statistics, Sewanhaka received more than $48.2 million in state aid for its six high schools. In 2022-23, that state aid will increase to more than $57.8 million. The largest percentage increase comes from the East Williston school district, which had more than $3.9 million allocated in state aid in 202122. In 2022-23, statistics show, that state aid will increase by more than 38.7 percent to $5.5 million. The dollar increase for Manhasset’s state aid in 2022-23 was the lowest among the 11 school districts, with $652,000 more being allocated, Continued on Page 34

Valauri, 2 others seek 3 ed board spots Alison Gilbert and Robert Kooning join in run for seats on Roslyn school board BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Roslyn Board of Education Trustee Bruce Valauri is seeking re-election in the vote on May 17. Valauri is running for one of three spots that are open this year, alongside Alison Gilbert and Robert Kooning, according to district officials. Valauri, a prosthodontist whose dental practice in Manhattan treats cancer patients with head and neck problems, is seeking his fifth threeyear term. Residents in the Roslyn school district will also vote on the budget

on May 17. The Roslyn Board of Education adopted a $122,145,193 budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year on April 12. The budget calls for a 2.93 percent increase in spending from the current year and a 2.48 percent increase in the tax levy, which falls under the state tax levy limit of 3.7 percent. The proposed tax levy totals $101,148,675. If Roslyn residents approve the final budget, it will take effect July 1, the beginning of the fiscal year. In the East Williston school dis-

trict, two spots on the Board of Education are open as the terms of David Keefe and Tasneem Meghji are expiring. Both terms end on June 30. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 17, and voting will take place at the Wheatley School in Old Westbury. In Herricks, one board seat is available for a three-year term following the expiration of the term currently held by Juleigh Chin. Also on the ballot will be the vote for the $125.3 million budget proposal for the 2022-23 school year. The proposal represents a spending increase

of 1.99 percent from the current year and calls for a tax increase of 0.5 percent. Breaking down the budget, 76 percent of it is devoted to programs and 13 percent goes to capital improvements, according to district officials. The district anticipates state aid of $16.6 million, an increase of $2.2 million from the current year. A final budget review will be held on May 5. Efforts to reach school district officials for further information were unavailing.
