Mysterious leap from the mind to body Dr. Hui is a graduate from China’s by D r . Tom F e r r a r o , number one medical school Peking Union S p o r t Ps y c h o l o g i st A casual walk down the main street of any town on Long Island will confirm that drug stores, actually really big drug stores are a thriving business. You will see a CVS, a Walgreens and a Rite Aid within less than half a mile of each other. The reason for this is that our nation is undergoing an epidemic of psychosomatic illnesses. Medical researcher Paul Shorter from York University found that there are widespread increases in bronchial asthma, hypertension, migraines, ulcerative colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome and allergies. Work by Robert Putnam of Harvard (Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community) James Kunstler’s “The Geography of Nowhere” and Wolf and Bruhn’s “The Power of Clan” all put forth the idea of a connection between the American culture and physical illness. They all suggest that a combination of overwork and social isolation combine to produce increases in many forms of disease including heart disease and increased susceptibility to infection. What in the world is going on here? Well to find out more about this mysterious connection leap from the mind to the body I tracked down one of the nation’s leading experts. Meet Dr. Yiqun Hui.

Medial College and then went on the get her PhD from University of Pennsylvania where she researched asthma mediators and discovered the leukotriene receptor. She is an instructor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and has a private practice in Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology in Bayside. I sat down with her last week in Great Neck where she lives and our conversation ranged over a wide number of topics including the doctor/patient relationship, the value of reassurance and the need to understand the connection between emotions and disease. She is obviously a kind, pleasant and extremely bright doctor and when I asked her why she entered medicine she told me that her older brother was hospitalized many times with asthma as a child and this experience impelled her to medical research to find a cure for this disease. Now that’s what I call a good younger sister. She emphasized that there is a connection between hives and emotions with some patients breaking out when under great stress. She said “It’s crucial that you take time to sit with the patient and get to know them and their life circumstances. When they see that you care and understand them, I am able to provide not only the right diag-

Dr. Yiqun Hui treats with her mind and with her heart. nosis but also I am able to offer reassurance which at times can be very curative. “ She told me that allergies are increasing in the general population and the leading theory as to why is called the Hygiene Hypothesis. This theory suggests that we now live in such a sterile germ free environment thanks to soaps etc. that the body’s defenses never have a chance to go to work at an early age and thus go into overdrive later on in the form of allergic overreaction. She also admitted that there is also a connection between many illnesses and an overstressed psychosocial environment but that the proof of that awaits more research.

We talked about the placebo effect in medicine and how the doctor’s reassurance in fact has a strong health giving impact. I would agree with this. Many a time I enter the doctor’s office with both pain and anxiety and after some reassurance I leave with no anxiety and no pain at all. This is the power and value of a good caring physician. If you’re lucky enough to have a good doc bring them a gift on your next visit. Dr. Hui also talked about the amazing connection between depression and being prone to infections of all kinds. I have seen this many times with my own psychotherapy patients. They may come in with a cold or cough that is beginning and by exploring a recent acute depressive episode the cough and sore throat often and quite mysteriously disappears. We are lucky to have this level of physician right here on Long Island. If you are an allergy suffer, have bronchial asthma or tend to be infection prone the good Dr. Hui can be reached through her website drhuiallergist.com and by calling (718) 889-1062. Her office is located in Bayside and she in bilingual in Chinese and English. Dr. Hui is one of those rare doctors that will actually spend time with you, is highly credentialed and has one of the most valuable skills a physician can have, a good bedside manner and a kind heart.

Did you know? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research has shown that strengthening exercises are safe and effective for men and women of all ages, including seniors. The CDC also notes that men and women with heart disease or arthritis may benefit the most from exercise regimens that include lifting weights several times per week. A strength-training program at Tufts University enlisted older men and women with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The program lasted 16 weeks, and by the end of those 16 weeks, participants reported that their pain had decreased by an average of 43 percent while also decreasing the disability caused by their conditions. In addition to the benefits uncovered in the Tufts program, strength training can benefit older men and women by improving balance and flexibility, which can decrease their likelihood of falling and the severity of those falls if they do slip.

How to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet

O

ne of the first questions vegetarians are asked when acknowledging their dietary preferences is, “Are you getting enough protein?” Many people assume it’s impossible to consume sufficient protein on a diet that consists largely of fruits and vegetables. But many vegetarians get the protein their bodies need. Many people are overly concerned with protein intake, eating more than they

really need to meet health requirements. The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein in the United States is .36 grams of protein for every pound a person weighs. Many people need less protein than they think, which is likely one reason many nonvegetarians eat roughly one-third more protein than vegetarians. The Vegetarian Resource Group says there are no distinct health advantages to consuming a diet high in protein.

How protein works

The body digests protein into amino acids to fuel its activity and aid in tissue repair. There are 20 different amino acids in food, but the human body can only make 11 of them. Your body cannot synthesize essential amino acids, which must come from your diet. The nine essential amino acids, which cannot be produced by the body, must be obtained strictly from food. Foods that contain all of the amino acids necessary are called “complete protein sources.” Many animal products are great sources of complete protein, but complete protein also can be found in plant-based foods. One food that is a complete protein source is the soybean.

Other plant-based foods may not be complete proteins by themselves, but when eaten together, can complement one another to provide all the necessary amino acids. For example, combining beans and legumes with certain grains, seeds and nuts is a way to get the protein one needs. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says that intentionally combining foods at strict ratios is not necessary. As long as your diet contains a variety of foods, many protein needs are easily met.

Less protein healthier?

Many fad diets point to high protein sources for weight loss and improved athletic performance. But reports published in journals like Nutrition and Cancer and the American Journal of Epidemiology indicate high intake of protein, particularly animal protein, may be linked to osteoporosis, cancer and impaired kidney function. Eating a healthy, moderate amount of protein, such as that in vegetarian or vegan diets, can be beneficial. Many vegetarians need not worry about their protein intake. As long as diets include plenty of grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, vegetarians can meet their bodies’ protein needs.
