Keep poinsettias looking great through the holidays
A
long with the fragrant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poinsettias make up a key component of holiday decorating. Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico.
Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don’t let the plant sit in water. Over- or under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom.
Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain. The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts, and the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts.
The Ohio State University Extension says poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradually drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape.
Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short periods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts.
Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they flower about 10 weeks after the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less. Therefore, to have the plant in full flower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the first part of October until Thanksgiving. Many people find the affordability of poinsettias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth.
Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans or animals, but they should not be ingested due to the potential for allergic reactions. Poinsettias can help remove pollutants from indoor air, which is advantageous during the winter months when doors and windows are typically kept closed. Select plants that have dark green foliage and no low or damaged leaves. This ensures the best success for keeping poinsettias looking healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season.

How to save on hightech gifts Shoppers can employ several strategies to save money on gadgets this holiday season.
G
adgets are among the most popular gifts come the holiday season. In 2014, CreditDonkey.com surveyed shoppers to determine what they planned to give during the holidays, and electronics were second only to gift cards among the most popular gifts to give. Sixty-three percent of respondents cited their intentions to give electronics, while the survey also found that 76 percent of people planned to request electronics as holiday gifts. Gadgets figure to be popular gifts again this holiday season. Unwrapping the latest tablet or a big-screen television can be exciting, but electronics can be expensive. Those who plan to give their loved ones the latest gadgetry should be happy to learn there are ways to do so that don’t require breaking the bank. Scale back. Oftentimes people are buying more computer or data than they actually need. For example, when buying computers, it’s tempting to go for those that boast the most memory, but that extra memory is only useful to those people who truly need it. A less expensive model that suits your loved one’s genuine needs will make for an impressive and more practical gift.

Determine necessity. Some gadgets are more a desire than a necessity. Decide if a particular device will be an asset to your loved one or just another trendy item that soon will be gathering dust. Look for devices that your loved one will make the most of. If the purchase is not warranted, save your money and look for something else. Consider refurbished items. Don’t shy away from refurbished items, as the discounts can be steep. Refurbished items are often just items that were returned to the store because they’re not needed or because the item was
malfunctioning. Returned items are factory-tested and then repackaged. Opt for refurbished items that carry a manufacturer-backed warranty for greater peace of mind. Consider open box items. Just because packaging is dented or torn does not mean the merchandise inside is damaged. Purchasing a product that’s not inside a pristine box can sometimes yield a 10 to 15 percent discount at retailers that offer open-box specials. Just verify that all cords, manuals and other accessories are inside the box before leaving the store. Peruse previous generation models. Manufacturers release a new version of their devices seemingly every year. That doesn’t mean last year’s phone, video game console or computer is any less effective than the updated version. Models from previous years likely won’t be much different from the latest models, but they do figure to be considerably less expensive. Look for coupon codes. When researching products, search for coupon codes for desired electronics and retailers. Webbased retailers may post coupon codes that add up to significant savings. Just ensure that the total cost after taxes and shipping fees are calculated makes the purchase worth your while. Skip the warranty. Extended warranties often cost more money than potential repairs. In addition, after a few year’s time, your loved one may be looking to upgrade his or her gadget anyway, making the extended warranty an unnecessary expense. Gadgets make for popular yet expensive holiday gifts. But holiday shoppers can save money on electronics by employing a few savings strategies.

any people love to travel, but some take their wanderlust to another level. Men and women who seem perpetually on-the-go may not stop to discuss items on their holiday wish lists, but holiday shoppers can find the right gifts for those loved ones who never seem to stop for long before moving on to the next place.
Gear
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all our patrons for all their support throughout the year, along with our warm wishes for a blessed holiday and a happy and healthy New Year.

Whether the wanderer on your holiday shopping list prefers to travel domestically or overseas, he or she can’t hit the road without certain gear. Camping afficionados might appreciate a new mini-stove or grill so they can eat like kings no matter how far they retreat into their favorite forests. For the international jetsetter on your list, perhaps a new set of luggage might make the perfect holiday gift. If your budget is a more tight, consider a traveler’s kit with luxury shampoo, conditioner and body wash and lotion.
Camera
Part of the joy of traveling is documenting a trip with a great camera. Cameras come in a wide range of styles, and good cameras can range from a couple hundred dollars to more expensive models that cost upwards of a thousand dollars. If your budget does not allow for a more expensive camera, give your loved one some cash toward buying a new camera for his or her next adventure. If money is no object, do your homework, researching cameras based on your loved one’s interests. More adventurous travelers might want cameras that can withstand the wear and tear of outdoor sports, while travelers who focus more on sightseeing might not benefit from cameras designed for more daring photographers. Research cameras online, and ask employees at local electronics retailers which type of camera is best suited to the traveler on your list.
Airline miles
Many airlines allow customers to transfer their airline miles to whomever they choose. Some airlines, such as Delta, allow miles to be transferred to a maximum of four people, and such transfers incur both a fee per mile transferred and a transaction fee. In addition, airlines may limit how many miles you can transfer or only allow members of their mileage programs to transfer their miles to other members. Airline miles can be a great gift for travel enthusiasts, saving them substantial amounts of money. Learn the ins and outs of your mileage program before giving miles as a gift. If the traveler on your shopping list prefers to travel by car rather than airplane, a gas card can go a long way toward trimming the cost of his or her travels.
Experiences
If you know a loved one will be traveling to a particular locale in the near future, look into his or her destination and book a unique experience for him or her. For example, travelers headed to London may appreciate a tour of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace. Men and women visiting New York City for the first time might appreciate a boat tour to the Statue of Liberty or a nighttime boat ride along the Hudson and East Rivers that allows them to take in Manhattan’s famed skyline under the stars. Such experiences can make trips that much more memorable. Travel enthusiasts range from weekend warriors who can’t wait to arrive at their favorite campsite to international jetsetters. Holiday shoppers can find a host of gifts suited to all types of travelers this holiday season.

Want to be “A kid in a Candy Store” again ?… Eileen and Ronnie, the owners of Bobb Howard’s General Store and Auto Repair Shop, are a couple of baby boomers who grew up on Long Island playing hopscotch and hide-and-seek, stickball and stoop ball, flipping baseball cards and jacks, and playing hit the penny and spin the bottle... This family owned and operated auto repair business was opened 69 years ago on Columbus Day, 1946, by Eileen’s parents. Today, as in 1946, old-time values continue to be followed… They opened the General Store about 22 years ago, when Eileen, noticing the frenetic pace of today’s computerized world, decided it was time to go back to a simpler time, to have people remember what it felt like to be a “kid in a candy store” again, and go back to a time when games didn’t require batteries - a place where kids of all ages could come and browse and giggle with nostalgic memories. The store now has over 1000 retro candies and toys and ships “packages of memories” all over the world... People often comment on the combination of the two businesses, but for Eileen and Ronnie it is a natural extension of the things they love. Cleanliness, honesty and integrity are of utmost importance to them, traits that were passed down to them by Eileen’s parents. There is also an awards program set up each year at the New Hyde Park High School in Eileen’s parents‘ memories, not for the smartest kids in the class, but for the kids that “try the hardest” - that’s all her parents ever asked of her.... Both the General Store and the Auto Repair Shop have won numerous awards, including Best Candy Store, Best Collectible Store, Best Toy Store, Best Auto Repair Shop, Best Muffler Shop, Best of Long Island, Best of the North Shore, Best of Queens, “One of the 101 Places to Take Your Family”, and “Family Friendly Favorite”, but the one they are the most proud of is the award they won for BEST MOM and POP BUSINESS on LONG ISLAND!!! Eileen and Ronnie feel very blessed and incredibly lucky: they love what they do, they love coming to work everyday, and they love working with “kids” and “kids at heart” in both the General Store and the Auto Repair Shop - it must be a “generational thing”.... Go visit their place and take a stroll down memory lane. You will smile and reminisce, and they will send you home with a free bag of popcorn from their1947 popcorn machine!
Come visit our “General Store” filled with over 1,000 retro candies and toys …and see why we were voted

holiday gift ideas for the new parent in your life
M
any parents fondly recall their first holiday season as a mom and dad. While youngsters may not remember much about their first Thanksgiving dinner with family or where their first Christmas present was placed under the tree, parents tend to cherish such memories, making their first holidays with children in tow very memorable. Loved ones of new parents can take steps to make this holiday season even more special. The following are some gift ideas for holiday shoppers who want to make this season even more memorable for the proud new parents in their lives. Photo album: Today’s new parents have more pictures and video of their bundles of joy than any previous generation of moms and dads, as smartphones, tablets and other devices have made taking pictures much easier than in years past. But family members also have more access to such photos than ever before, making it easy to put together a special photo album of

the new parents and their new child. Pull pictures from the parents’ social media accounts or make an album of the numerous photos you have no doubt received since your loved ones became parents. Parents likely don’t have time to make such albums, so your efforts will almost certainly be appreciated. Camcorder: Many smartphones are capable of taking video, but such devices are not ideal for shooting longer home videos new parents will want to watch for years to come. An HD camcorder with sufficient internal flash memory can allow new parents to take longer, higher quality videos with superior audio to those that are shot on smartphones. Such a camcorder may be costly for those shopping on a strict budget, but it’s a gift new parents are sure to love and utilize for years to come. Nursery sound system: New moms and dads are no doubt anxiously anticipating the day when the newest additions to their households sleep
through the night. Help speed up the arrival of that glorious night with a nursery sound system that provides soothing sounds to create a perfect sleeping environment for newly born boys and girls. The results may not arrive overnight, but parents may soon find their lovable youngster is spending more of the wee hours of the morning sleeping and less time waking up mom and dad. Spa treatment: Not every gift you buy for the new parents in your life needs to focus on helping them cherish their first holiday season as parents. New parents tend to experience lots of exhaustion in
their first few months on the job, but a spa treatment can be just the relaxing break they need from catering to their bundle of joys’ every need. Moms may prefer the full spa treatment, while dads may simply want a massage and some relaxing time in the steam room. Book a treatment for both mom and dad so they can spend some time relaxing during this hectic time of year. New parents often cherish their first holiday season as moms and dads, and the right holiday gift can make that first holiday season even better.

great Gifts for food fanatics
F
ood plays a big role come the holiday season, when friends and family tend to gather around the dinner table to share good meals and catch up on the year’s happenings. But while food plays an integral role at holiday gatherings, food also makes a great gift for that friend or family member on your holiday list who loves to savor a good meal no matter the time of year. Thanks in part to celebrity chefs and television shows that teach viewers how to make gourmet meals at home, it’s now easier than ever before for food lovers to expand their culinary horizons. Gifting such food fanatics can be fun and may even inspire a love of unique cuisine in holiday shoppers, especially those who consider the following gift ideas. Cooking kit: Ingredients and other essential elements of good meals were once taken for granted. But more and more foodies are now creating their own foods from scratch. Bacon fans may fall in love with a kit that helps them cure and smoke their own bacon, while those who love
fresh, homemade bread may appreciate a bread-making kit that includes flour, a pan, some recipes, and other items necessary to make the perfect homemade loaf of bread. Cooking kit options are vast so find a food your loved one can’t go without and purchase the appropriate kit. Gardening tools: While the holiday season might not seem like the ideal time to buy your favorite foodie some gardening tools, such items make the perfect gift for your loved one who wants to grow his or her own fruits and vegetables. Locally grown produce has become increasingly popular among foodies focused on eco-conscious cooking practices, and it does not get much more local than home cooks’ own backyards. Cutlery set: Though it’s easy to overlook, cutlery goes a long way toward making home cooks’ jobs easier. The right cutlery set, which may include one or two chef’s knives, a vegetable knife, a santoku knife, a bread knife, and other knives home cooks will appreciate, can make preparing a meal easier and
more efficient than cooking without a set. High-end cutlery sets can cost several hundred dollars, but shoppers on more limited budgets can still find quality cutlery sets for less money. Food getaway: Many foodies love to travel so they can experience cuisines popular overseas or in different regions of the country. Men and women whose spouses love food can plan a food-themed getaway weekend to a locale that specializes in a type of food their significant others enjoy or have always wanted to try. For example, men and women who love lobster may enjoy a trip to Maine’s annual Lobster Festival, while those who can’t get enough barbecue may appreciate a trip to one of the country’s more notable barbecue spots, such as Memphis, Kansas City, North Carolina or Texas. Food-themed gifts make the perfect holiday present for food fanatics, and shoppers have an endless array of options to satisfy their favorite foodies’ appetites.

Make a child’s first holiday special
A
baby’s life is filled with milestones. First smiles, first steps and first words are just a few of the moments parents will treasure. A baby’s first holiday season is another special time to cherish. Shoppers seeking gifts to make a baby’s first holiday special have many clever, cute and functional items to choose from. Several of these gifts can become keepsakes to be tucked into memory boxes for growing kids to look at later in life. Christmas pajamas: What better way to await for the arrival of Christmas than in a pair of snuggly pajamas? Send pajamas ahead of Christmas Day so that new parents will have plenty of adorable photo opportunities as their baby boy or girl tears open the gifts. Stores stock several different fun and festive prints, or look into pajamas that can be personalized. Photo print package: Photography packages can involve the entire expanding family and will catalog special moments in time. Purchase studio or on-location time with a private photographer, or use one of the popular photography chains found in malls and department stores. Personalized framed print: Commemorate the first holiday season with your child by getting a print made with his or her name and age. Leave a space on the print so that the child’s parents can customize it even further with their son or daughter’s footprints.
Include a matted frame and child-safe ink or paint to complete the gift. Keepsake ornament: Some families embrace the tradition of adding a new ornament to their Christmas trees each year. Purchase an ornament for the new baby with the year so he or she can join in the tradition. Crochet or knit blanket: Crafty individuals can make a blanket that the newest addition to the family can enjoy during the chilly days of winter. These blankets often become treasured keepsakes that may be passed down throughout the family or kept tucked away for kids so they can give them to their own children once they start their own families. Rocking horse: Babies don’t wait long before they start to run around and climb. A classic rocking horse makes for a fun baby gift, and rocking horses come in many different styles. inding the perfect holiday gift for the family sports fan can be fun for shoppers who also can’t get enough of their favorite sports. But shoppers who don’t know the Super Bowl from the World Series might not have the first idea about what to get the person on their list who seemingly spends all of his or her free time following the home team. Fortunately, shoppers don’t need to know a lot about sports to find holiday gifts that will elicit cheers from their favorite sports fans. The following are just a handful of gifts that would make any sports fan happy this holiday season.
Championship tickets
Many sports fans dream of attending a championship game, whether that game is the Super Bowl in the National Football League, the World Series in Major League Baseball, an NBA Finals game, or whatever sport most stokes a particular sports fan’s passion. Tickets have long been a go-to gift for sports fans, but holiday shoppers who want to go above and beyond may want to purchase tickets to the championship of a friend or loved one’s favorite sport. Super Bowl tickets tend to be the most expensive tickets in American sports, and such a costly gift might be more than your holiday budget can handle. Championships in other sports tend to be expensive, but more reasonably priced than Super Bowl tickets. If possible, ask a friend or relative to split the cost of a pair of tickets.
Television
Many sports fans now prefer to watch their favorite sports on television rather than in person. Remarkable advancements in technology have
made watching the game at home not much different than being there in person, and watching from home won’t require fans to pay for travel, parking or tickets. A new smart television that makes it possible for sports fans to stream out-of-town games or watch online highlights on big screens may be just the thing your favorite fanatic is hoping for this season.
Gym or league membership
Some sports fans are not merely content to watch their favorite sports; they also want to compete. Devoted fans of mixed martial arts might appreciate a membership to a local MMA gym, where they can mimic their favorite competitors’ moves all while getting in shape and meeting like-minded men and women who share their passion for MMA. Offer to pay for the first several months of a loved one’s membership, or if your budget allows, buy a 12-month membership. If MMA is not your loved one’s thing, then pay his or her entry fees into a local sports league, such as a summer softball league or a competitive basketball league for adults.
Attire
The sports attire business is booming, and no sports fan’s wardrobe is complete without a handful of items that profess his or her love for a favorite team. Visit a local sporting goods store to stock up on clothes that help your favorite fan fit in when he or she attends a game or visits a nearby bar or restaurant to take in the game with fellow fans. Holiday shopping for sports fans can be fun, especially for shoppers willing to get a little creative.

C
olored gemstones have been coveted since the dawn of time. They adorn crowned heads
and are presented as signs of respect and affection, and many believe that they hold mystical powers, serving as amulets. Most sought after are transparent gems, drops of pure color cut from single crystals. The 4 C’s apply to colored gemstones as well, but do not tell the whole story. The magic exuded by precious stones lies in their singular ability to reflect and absorb light, creating intense natural color and fire that no photograph nor certificate can define. We seek out these rare and glorious gemstones, celebrating their individuality and beauty, as we share them with our clientele.
