Queens pair arrested amid Mineola spree

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Police say two Queens residents were responsible for a number of thefts last week in Mineola.

Tyree Stewart, 30, and Jacqueline White, 26, of Rosedale were charged with three counts of petit larceny and two counts of criminal possession of stolen property following an afternoon spree through the village.

Shortly after 1 p.m. last Tuesday, police said, the two removed several packages delivered to homes on Latham Road, Laurel Drive and White Road.

Police were alerted when a Latham Road residence reported the larceny. A description of the vehicle used was relayed to officers, and an officer placed the two suspects into custody following a traffic stop on Latham Road.

Detectives conducted an investigation with the help of video surveillance and a Ring doorbell system to determine that Stewart and White were responsible, police said.

Their first court appearance is set for Tuesday. Police were able to recover and return several packages belonging to the victims.

Efforts to reach representatives for the defendants were unavailing.

Last Thursday marked the first North Hempstead Town Board meeting with Jennifer DeSena as town supervisor.

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena’s first public meeting turned contentious.

One of the main issues at the Town Board meeting last Thursday was a shift that moved board members from a shared room into separate Republican and Democratic “wings” of Town Hall, as described by a member of the supervisor’s staff.

Dealing with other controversies, the board also approved the appointment of John Chiara as town attorney and the transfer of nine Democratic political appointees from the office of the supervisor and town clerk to noncompetitive and union jobs.

The meeting began with public comments, where officials voiced concern over the change in the Town Board offices.

coordinator for North Hempstead’s Civil Service Employees Association Unit 7555, said: “I’m very disappointed this week. As I thought I worked for and with professionals, I’d find that I was very mistaken. I witnessed the most partisan politics that I’ve ever seen. No transparency, no conversations or plans on how things should be run. And no cooperation on the part of the former administration, backdoor moves and meetings. This is a township and a business. And our business is working for the people that voted all of you into the positions that you’re in.”

Former state Sen. Jack Martins, a Republican, expressed similar sentiments, arguing that the previous supervisor, Judi Bosworth, a Democrat, would not have stood for what took place.

“What changed between the administration of Jennifer DeSena now and the administration of Judi Bosworth a week

ago, where something like this could actually be done?” Martins asked. “Judi would never have done it. And I am surprised that it would have been done in the way that it was by members of this board.”

DeSena, a registered Democrat who ran as a Republican, was elected as supervisor in November, becoming the first Republican candidate elected to the position in 30 years. She, along with Republican Councilmen David Adhami and Dennis Walsh, represents the minority on a board Democrats control 4-3.

Democratic officials, including Robert Troiano Jr., who was elected in November, did not respond to any of the comments regarding the change in the office arrangement.

Dina De Giorgio, a Republican who previously served on the Town Board, said what happened was not right.

Dems bash Blakeman for mask order Officials, teachers union say leaving call to schools endangers health of children

Democratic officials across New York, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, criticized Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s executive order that would allow school districts to choose whether they want to enforce a mask mandate for their students.

The order, signed by Blakeman last Thursday, goes against Hochul’s mandate, which went into effect on Aug. 27. The mandate requires students to wear masks while in school.

Questions were quickly raised about whether Blakeman has legal authority over school districts, and Betty A. Rosa, the state education commissioner, said she expected school districts to abide by the state’s guidelines.

Blakeman, in a subsequent statement, touted the importance of providing “personal decision-making to families and normalcy to students.”

“Thankfully, children aren’t being hospitalized nor facing serious illness despite the rise in cases. If families want masks, we support them,” Blakeman said. “And if they don’t, we must support them as well.”

Blakeman’s order includes directing the county’s Office of Emergency Management to make masks available for every public and private school throughout Nassau for teachers, janitors, staff and administration so

schools will not have to close.

During a news conference last Thursday in New York City, Hochul called Blakeman’s executive order an attempt “to assert authority with respect to what has already been declared a public health emergency.”

Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association President Michael J. Kelly said Blakeman is overstepping.

“New York State Education Law is clear as to who has authority over schools,” Kelly said in a letter to Blakeman. “Counties have no more authority to direct school board matters than do schools to legislate county affairs.”

Jay Jacobs, chairman of the state’s and Nassau’s Democratic Party, said Blakeman’s order will likely result in more school districts closing their doors for in-person instruction with the growing number of coronavirus cases on Long Island. Jacobs said the executive order is an example of how “elections have consequences.”

“Bruce Blakeman’s refusal to comply with the law mandating that masks be worn in schools gravely endangers children, teachers, and our population’s most vulnerable,” Jacobs said in a statement. “This politically motivated directive will make school closures more likely, leaving middle and workingclass families unable to work or require them to pay for child care. School mask mandates must end, but now is certainly not the time.”

Ehrbar announces re-election bid To run on slate with Trustees Kevin Rynne and Bill O’Brien, Village Justice Kevin Kiley

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Mayor Paul Ehrbar of Williston Park is running for re-election alongside Trustees Kevin Rynne and Bill O’Brien and Village Justice Kevin Kiley.

Village elections will be held Tuesday, March 15. On the ballot will be the seats for mayor, two trustees and the village justice.

Ehrbar, first elected in 2010, is running for a fourth four-year term after winning re-election in 2018 against former Williston Park Fire Chief Anthony Gagliardi by 410 votes. Rynne, who is deputy mayor, and O’Brien are seeking their fourth and second terms, respectively.

Kiley has been in his current role with the village since 2007.

The four are running as members of the Integ-

rity Party, according to a news release.

Ehrbar, who ran the DWI program in the Nassau County Department of Probation before retiring, was elected to the Herricks school board in 1994. He served on the Herricks board for the next six years, three as president.

Recent accomplishments under Ehrbar’s tenure have been overseeing the village during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing village roads project, among others.

During the insurrection, Suozzi detailed his firsthand reactions through Twitter. While the Capitol invasion was occurring, Suozzi held a news conference from an undisclosed location. He clarified that he did not know if the noises were gunshots or tear gas.

“We went downstairs, through some of the labyrinths of the Capitol complex.”

From where he was, he said he could see representatives and staffers huddled in corners, attempting to call their families or others. He later tweeted a video once representatives began returning to their chambers.

U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) was also present at the Capitol during the insurrection but told the public via Twitter that she and her staff were unharmed. One year later, Rice expressed her gratitude to the law enforcement officers who helped stop the invasion, touting the

need to find out the forces behind it.

“Today we thank the US Capitol Police, DC Metro Police, & other law enforcement officers who protect us every day,” Rice said in a statement. “I hope all 147 of my colleagues who voted to overturn the results are able to reflect on how their decision put those officers in jeopardy. We also thank the bipartisan Jan. 6 Committee for its work to find out who instigated the attack, who failed to stop it, & who continues to cover it up. We owe it to the American people to find out which of their elected leaders is trying to subvert our democracy.”

Suozzi and state Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills) stressed the importance of having American citizens remember the attack on the nation’s democracy and to have free and fair elections.

“Those of us who believe in American freedom owe it to future generations to do everything in our power to strengthen and protect our democratic values from cowardly bullies and thugs who seek to dismantle our proud traditions and our way of life in this country,” Kaplan said in a statement. “And those of us who love this country must always remember the lessons of January 6th, and never again let our freedoms come under attack through violence or anti-democratic legislation.”

Lafazan raises $450K in Congress bid Touts money from New Yorkers in primary battle with Jon Kaiman, Melanie D’Arrigo

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Since announcing his run for Congress three weeks ago, County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D-Woodbury) has raised over $450,000. Of the money raised, 95 percent came from New Yorkers, according to his campaign.

Lafazan, 27, who is running in the 3rd Congressional District, called the fundraising effort thus far a humbling experience.

“Since announcing my candidacy just three weeks ago, I have been truly humbled by the outpouring of support from the residents of Long Island and Queens,” Lafazan said, according to a news release. “During my conversations with people throughout this district, it has become clear that the voters of NY03 are looking for a candidate who can both keep this seat in Democrat hands, and once elected, go to Washington on their behalf to deliver results. During my time in the Nassau County Legislature, I passed a record number of bills for one simple reason: I listened to my constituents and worked side by side with them to find practical solutions. I plan to continue that same approach when I get to Congress.”

Donnelly sworn in as Nassau County D.A. Nassau County’s new District Attorney, Anne Donnelly, was inducted into office in a ceremony at the David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence.

The program included a video, which detailed Donnelly’s background, priorities and vision for the top prosecutor’s office.

The parent of a crime victim participated in the ceremony, as well as a law enforcement official and members of the clergy.

Entertainment was provided

by Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti, as well as the NCPD Blue Lion Band and the Department’s Pipes and Drums.

Donnelly discussed her plans to increase safety in Nassau County.

The top prosecutor detailed her decision to seek the District Attorney’s job, despite the fact that she never held public office previously. Donnelly indicated that recent changes to bail and discovery laws in Albany, which she believes have gone too far, made the job of prosecutors and law enforcement officers more difficult.

Additionally, the laws have severely limited judicial discretion and have made our communities less safe, according to the D.A. Indicating that she would work with other District

Attorneys around the state, Donnelly said she is eager to seek changes to the state’s bail and discovery laws.

“We live in the greatest country in the world, with the

greatest court system in the world,” said Donnelly. “Prosecutors, the defense bar, and the judiciary – we must all work together to arrive at a just outcome. Justice, equity and com-

passion are principles that will guide me as District Attorney.”

Donnelly said technology crimes have been on the rise and require more resources in order to bring criminals to justice. She said that senior citizens have been a popular target of these crimes.

Donnelly promised to bolster resources and present informational seminars to help neighbors prevent becoming victims.

Donnelly also talked about her intention to offer more assistance and support for those who have fallen prey to drug addiction. At the same time, she pledged to vigorously pursue gangs and the people who sell “poison” in Nassau.

“We will push for treatment court and healthcare options for the people who need it,” Donnelly said. “But, mark my words, we will fight very hard against the gangs and people selling this poison in our communities.”

The new D.A. also said she will continue to dedicate herself to the principle of “blind justice,” promising to pursue justice without consideration of race, gender, religion, political affiliation, economic status or any other factors aside from the facts in each case.

Town welcomes 9 new appointees

Nine positions in North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena’s new administration have been filled.

The jobs were included in a personnel resolution approved 4-3 by the Town Board on Jan. 6.

Joseph Scalero will serve as deputy town supervisor and chief of staff. Scalero, who was part of DeSena’s transition team, comes to the town after serving the Village of Mineola for 16 years as clerk.

“He has a lot of experience with smart growth, development and an administration background,” DeSena previously said regarding his appointment.

DeSena said she and Scalero will meet with town departments to gauge their operations and assess any improvements that can be made. Specifically, the two will observe the Building Department, which DeSena ran on fixing, and inquire about its objectives and measurements to track progress, among other things.

Scalero is president of the New York State Association of Village and City Clerks, which tries to educate officials and increase their level of professionalism. Scalero takes the post previously held by Janine Dillon, who filled in after Aline Kathadourian resigned in 2019.

Serving as special counsel to the town will be Charles McQuair. He has nearly three decades of experience in general practice law and has previously held positions in the Town of Oyster Bay and City of Glen Cove, where he served as assistant

town attorney and city attorney respectively, according to the supervisor’s office.

Paul Wood will serve as director of finance. He is a CPA and accounting executive who previously worked as chief tax compliance officer and vice president of Lexington Realty Trust, the same firm he served as chief accounting officer during his 30-year tenure.

Brian Devine, director of communications for the supervisor’s office, has worked for 12 years in the Town of Oyster Bay’s press office.

Regarding the three appointees that work in the supervisor’s department, DeSena said they will help fix issues in the town.

“I am very excited for Paul, Brian, and Charles to join my team,” DeSena said in a statement to Blank Slate Media. “They all bring something unique to the table as we work together to move this great Town forward, and do the work of better serving our taxpayers, fixing the dysfunction that exists within the Town, and streamlining Town government to make it more efficient.”

Meagan McCarty will serve as an administrative assistant to the Town Board.

McCarty worked as a legislative aide for North Hempstead and has worked on campaigns for then-state Sen. Elaine Phillips, former Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio and state Senate candidate Dave Franklin.

Connor Dunleavy will serve as executive assistant to the supervisor. Two deputy clerk positions will be held by Ratna Bhalla and Maggie Malito.

the town from 2004 through 2013, is currently the deputy executive for Suffolk County, a position he has held since 2017. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), who has represented the district since 2016, is running for governor.

Kaiman, 59, said he’s running to reclaim the traditional values of the Democratic Party, which includes enabling the government to uplift constituents from every walk of life.

“I look and see where the Democratic Party has gone and I have grave concerns,” Kaiman said. “I think that we have lurched into uncharted territory taking us into extreme positions.”

Describing himself as a traditional Democrat in his own words, Kaiman said he is focused on issues such as abortion, the economy, climate change, supporting organized labor and Israel.

“I think these are clearly challenging times for us as a country,” Kaiman said.

“And this is a moment when we should be calling on people who have been in the arena or have been in the fight who have met the challenges that we face.”

Ice leads to pileup on Northern Blvd.

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Icy conditions last week on Northern Boulevard near the Roslyn Viaduct caused a 24-vehicle collision that closed the road for hours.

Police said that five empty school buses were involved in the pileup on Jan. 5. Ten people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries, and they have since been released.

Sand was spread on parts of the boulevard and traffic resumed hours later, officials said.

Ronald Collura Jr., assistant chief with Roslyn Rescue told News12 the pileup was one of the worst he has seen.

“I spoke with a couple lieutenants, and this we’ve never seen, I’ve never seen,” Collura said. “I think in total about 24 cars. We’ve never seen something of this magnitude and certainly on the viaduct.”

Northern Boulevard, also known as State Route 25A, serves as a main east-west route for much of the North Shore. From the Queens-Midtown Tunnel to Calverton in Suffolk County, the highway stretches for 73 miles.

Efforts to reach Roslyn Rescue for comment were unavailing.

Witnesses say masked 19 N. Shore students men robbed Louis Vuitton Regeneron semifinalists

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Witnesses told NBC News that a group of masked individuals stole 20 designer handbags from the Louis Vuitton store in Manhasset’s Americana shopping center over the weekend.

According to the report, an undisclosed number of men in masks stole the handbags from the store in the middle of the day. Efforts to reach the store, Americana officials or the Nassau County Police Department were unavailing.

With a variety of high-end stores, the Americana is familiar with stores being robbed. In August 2020, two men from Queens reportedly stole more than $28,000 from the shopping center’s Dior store.

“The subjects removed merchandise and exited the store,” a police statement said. “The subjects fled from the scene in a Honda Civic with merchandise valued in excess of $28,000. A description of the vehicle was provided to police.”

Nassau County police officers said they located the vehicle “a short time later,” and after an investigation, the two men were placed under arrest without incident, with one found to be in possession of a sub-

stance believed to be heroin, police said.

The two men were charged with burglary and criminal mischief, with one being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Efforts to reach law enforcement for an update on that incident were unavailing.

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Nineteen students from high schools on the North Shore were named semifinalists in this year’s Regeneron Science Talent Search, with four coming from Roslyn High School.

The competition, formerly sponsored

by Westinghouse and then Intel before its current sponsor, pharmaceutical company Regeneron, is run each year by the Society for Science and the Public, with the goal of finding solutions to the world’s challenges from budding young scientists.

From an initial 1,804 applications, 300 students across the country and other parts of the world were named scholars in the 2022 contest, with 49 being from Long Island. The 300 scholars and their schools will be awarded $2,000 each.

Roslyn High School’s Lindsay Fabricant, Maya Rose Groothuis, Harshita Sehgal and Han Byur Youn were named semifinalists for their research projects.

Youn’s research explored voting trends and the responsibility for people to cast

their ballots while Groothuis’ research shined a light onto environmental efficacy beliefs and the role they play in relation to climate change.

Ensuring that elder loves ones eat well Eating a nutritious diet can add more years to our life, and improve the quality of those years.

A diet that is rich in nutrients, and low in unhealthy ingredients such as bad fats and added sugar and salt, lowers the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, frailty, vision loss, and even Alzheimer’s disease. It also helps seniors maintain a healthy weight.

“But as we grow older, we can face barriers to good nutrition,” says Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk. He shares five common challenges and how family can work with older loved ones to overcome them.

Loss of appetite. Age-related diminishing of taste, smell and vision, as well as changes in the digestive system, can make food seem less appealing. To enhance flavor, try marinades, condiments and spices.

Older adults may be more sensitive to foods that are very spicy or sour—and of course, avoid excess salt.

Health problems. Loose or missing teeth, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, or the effects of a stroke can make it difficult to prepare meals, use utensils, chew and swallow. “These problems should be addressed with your loved one’s health care provider,” Balbera advises. “The doctor or dietitian might recommend soft foods, as well as modified cooking tools and eating utensils.”

Financial challenges. Most communities offer meal programs for older adults, such as Meals on Wheels or community dining programs. (Many of these programs are delivery-only these days.)

Your loved one also might qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Help your loved one contact their local senior services agency to learn more.

Transportation. When it’s no longer safe for an older adult to drive, getting groceries can be a real challenge! Family and friends can offer to pick up what their loved one needs, or take them to the market. Volunteers, senior transportation and ride-sharing companies might be an option. During the pandemic, older adults have discovered the convenience of grocery and restaurant delivery. Family can help their loved one navigate the websites and install apps.

Social isolation. Seniors who are lonely often forget to eat—or they might turn to unhealthy, processed “comfort foods” that are high in fat, salt and sugar.

And few people are motivated to cook for one. Community dining programs offer companionship that improves the appetite. Family and friends can schedule regular meals with their loved one or have cooking gatherings to create nourishing meals their loved one can freeze.

Balbera shares five ways home care supports senior nutrition Meal preparation. A trained, professional in-home caregiver can serve as your loved one’s personal chef, creating meals and snacks your loved one enjoys, while modifying foods to comply with prescribed special diets such as soft, low-salt, low-fat or gluten-free. Your loved one can participate in menu planning; studies show food choice enhances appetite.

Shop for groceries. The professional caregiver can pick up groceries at the store if your loved one can’t go, or prefers not to. “But for seniors with mobility or cognitive challenges who spend much of the time at home, a trip to the market can be a real treat,” says Balbera. “Getting a little exercise while making selections from pyramids of produce and aisles of colorful packages provides an appetite boost.”

Companionship. “Watching the caregiver create the meal and set a lovely table, and enjoying pleasant conversation during mealtime are more appetite boosters,” Balbera notes. “And seniors with chewing or swallowing difficulties feel more confident with a supportive, nonjudgmental caregiver nearby.”

Transportation. “Grocery shopping is just the beginning,” says Balbera. “Your loved one may have regular appointments with their dentist, a dietitian, a speechlanguage therapist if they have a swallowing disorder, or an occupational therapist to help with eating and preparing foods.”

The caregiver can take your loved one to these appointments, and on trips out and about for exercise and to stay connected.

Memory care. People with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia may have decreased appetite and sense of thirst. They may have trouble using utensils and swallowing food. The professional caregiver can prepare special meals and provide supervision, assistance and encouragement as recommended by your loved one’s health care provider.

Hardball comes to N. Hempstead

O

n the bright side, the transition of Republican Jennifer DeSena as North Hempstead supervisor has not been as bad as when Laura Gillen became the first Democrat elected Hempstead town supervisor in more than 100 years in 2017.

Gillen’s predecessor, Anthony Santino, and his town council supporters used his last 14 days in office to hand out $4 million in raises to 197 employees, move his top patronage hires to permanent positions in the new administration and grant the town’s unions a no-layoff clause.

In a letter to the editor last week calling for North Hempstead Democrats to give DeSena a chance in starting her new role, Gillen revealed other slights. This included the replacement of the furniture with badly worn pieces and what she termed an “upper decker” in the bathroom.

Gillen responded to the lastminute raises and staffing changes by suing the Town Board — and its members individually.

It’s kind of hard to top that as beginnings go.

But the four Democrats who now control the seven-member North Hempstead Town Board have not exactly rolled out the welcome wagon in greeting DeSena or the two new Republican board members, Dennis Walsh and David Adhami.

The Town Board’s Democrats moved seven political appointees who had served under Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Town Clerk Wayne Wink into positions working for the board and two into union jobs with no notice to the Republicans. Total cost: $800,000.

The Democrats also rearranged the traditional “all-worktogether” Town Board office that had been in place for 50 years.

In came the former Bosworth staffers, out went the two Republican board members, who were given small offices near the supervisor’s offices.

Jack Martins, the former mayor of Mineola and an unsuccessful Republican candidate for county executive, implored the Democrats during a contentious board meeting last Thursday to maintain the collegial atmosphere that had existed under Bosworth during her eight years in office – especially in her last two when Democrats held six of the seven board seats.

During that time, Town Councilman Angelo Ferrera, the lone Republican on the board, shared office space with the Democrats.

Martins asked the four Democrats a fair question: how did the change in office space come about? But he was greeted with silence. Martins and the town residents are owed an answer.

Still, the Democrats, like the three Republicans, pledged a cooperative spirit at the meeting – despite repeated sniping between the two sides.

Robert Troiano, a former Democratic Town Board member who was the lone Democrat to win a town seat in the past election, said that no money was taken from the supervisor’s budget and the money used for the new Town Board staff positions had not increased the town budget.

How exactly that was done was also not sufficiently explained.

We’d like to think that the town just didn’t have $800,000 lying around in a cookie jar.

the Democrats’ maneuver, DeSena and the two Republican Town Board members not only declined to vote on Democratic appointees but the supervisor’s eight picks as well.

This created a surreal moment when DeSena’s staff picks were passed on a party-line vote with the Democrats approving all eight and the new supervisor and the two Republican board members voting no.

One of those appointments was for a new position – communications director for the town supervisor. Not to be confused with Gordon Tepper, the communications director for the town. So, yes, the town now has two communications directors.

DeSena has not exactly been blameless in turning Town Board meetings into must-see TV and fanning the flames of political division.

Two weeks ago, she sent out a news release claiming the Town Board was planning a “deceitful post-election stunt” that included terminating five budgeted positions in the supervisor’s office.

Turns out that wasn’t true.

Last week, she backtracked on her claim, acknowledging that no such changes had been made and citing misinformation she received from an unnamed source.

“I was told something this week that I’ve now been told was a mistake and I am looking forward to getting started working,” DeSena said. “I hope that I’ll be able to get some new staff in January. I look forward to working with the rest of the board and hope that we’ll be able to do this within the 2022 budget that you all approved.”

DeSena, a registered Democrat who ran as a Republican, has never served in elective office so some might see her accusation as a rookie mistake.

So here’s a suggestion: Shootfirst-and-ask-questions-later might not be the best way to work with Town Board Democrats.

That lesson did not appear to have been learned following Thursday’s meeting when Brian Devine, a former Oyster Bay public information officer whose position had just been approved by board Democrats, issued a news release.

“The Democrat council members in North Hempstead care more about keeping political hacks on the payroll than about the taxpayers of our town who are footing the bill,” Devine said. “That’s the only way to explain their irresponsible decision to protect these political appointees. Supervisor DeSena was elected to clean up the political mess left behind by decades of shenanigans and that’s exactly what she plans to do. It’s no wonder they’re clearly threatened by her actions and doing everything they can to hobble her administration.”

It should be noted that town taxpayers are also footing the bill for Devine’s salary. Thanks to the Democratic Town Board members who approved his position.

But there are more important and more troubling problems with Devine’s statement that DeSena should answer immediately.

Such as was she actually elected to clean up a political mess created by “decades of shenanigans?”

And does she believe the Bosworth appointees who were retained are “political hacks?”

Cuomo just might run for governor again

R

eaders of my column know that during most of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s time in office I was one of his staunchest critics.

When he was first elected, I did agree to be the “conservative” voice on his transition team and on his Council of Economic and Fiscal Advisors. However, I was quickly disillusioned.

The man I thought would govern as a centrist quickly moved to the far left. He abandoned his solemn promise not to raise taxes and he promoted and signed into law extremist legislation on social issues that I opposed.

From his second year in office until he resigned in 2021, I maintained a “Cuomo Watch;” critiquing his fiscal, economic and social policies.

When accusations against Cuomo hit the papers—I was at first skeptical. I grew up with many Italians in Queens County and knew they hug and kiss— both men and women—particularly at family, social and religious gatherings.

I am not a hugger. But I have been hugged by both Mario and

Andrew Cuomo. It’s part of their ethnicity.

But after reading the Report of Investigation into Allegations of Sexual Harassment by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo released by state Attorney General Letitia James on Aug. 3, I concluded the governor may have pushed the “affection envelope” too far and was politically cooked.

I was reminded of the postWatergate comment made by Richard Nixon during the famous May 1977 David Frost interview concerning his political enemies: “I gave them a sword. And they stuck it in. And they twisted with relish. And I guess, if I’d been in their position, I’d have done the same thing.”

I, like others, sort of enjoyed twisting the political sword into Cuomo. Many experienced what the Germans call “schadenfreude,” which means “joy over some misfortune suffered by another.”

When he resigned in late August 2021, I wrote at that time that his fall was inevitable. His ruthless approach to governing took its toll. He had few friends

And when Albany Sheriff Craig Apple filed a criminal misdemeanor complaint against Cuomo for allegedly touching a female aide “for the purposes of degrading and gratifying his sexual desires,” it fortified my belief that Cuomo had to depart.

Since that time, however, circumstances have broken in Cuomo’s favor.

In November, Albany District Attorney David Soares delayed Cuomo’s arraignment to January because the sheriff ’s complaint was “potentially defective.”

As Cuomo waited to be arraigned, there were other developments: The district attorneys of Nassau and Westchester declined to prosecute him for any sexual harassment allegations.

Next, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office ended its investigation into Cuomo’s mishandling of nursing homes during the 2020 pandemic lockdown.

While there is no doubt in my mind that his wrongheaded policies caused the deaths of thousands of our seniors living in nursing homes, the DA’s office concluded “there was no evidence to suggest that any laws were broken.”

Then on Jan. 4 Albany prosecutors moved in court to drop their case because there was not enough evidence to “meet our burden at trial.” Albany City Judge Holly Trexler granted the district attorney’s motion.

Looking back, despite his cries of innocence and unfair treatment, Andrew Cuomo had to leave office last year.

First and foremost, his political support collapsed.

The other reason: If he re-

mained in office and was impeached and convicted, he would be unable to run for office ever again.

The New York State Constitution states: “Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, or removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any public office of honor, trust or profit under the state.”

But now with various charges dropped, a Jan. 7 New York Times headline declared that “Some See a Possible [Cuomo] Comeback.”

Will he seek his old post?

He certainly has the money in his campaign chest to finance a comeback. He may run to vindicate himself to spite his critics and to restore his family’s honor.

Such a move, in my judgment, would be a mistake. It would open old wounds and his enemies would have a field day sniping at him.

The brooding, angry, former governor must not let his pride cloud his thinking. Cuomo should be mindful of the Biblical proverb, “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

When you wish on a traveling star

I

started making resolutions for 2022 when something weird happened.

They started turning into wishes instead.

Rather than “I resolve to get out of the house more,” I found myself saying, “This year I want to travel!” I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon or Yosemite or those great Sequoia trees—and I really want to do that before the next plague comes along.

But even if COVID were to disappear entirely from the face of the Earth (which I now doubt it ever will), there are limits to my tolerance for cramped hours of air travel. Which means I may never get any closer to authentic Indian food than the offerings on Long Island—and that thought made me sad.

“Oh, I wish I could go to India,” I blurted out.

“Would you need me to — gulp — go with you?” I noticed my husband was suddenly looking very pale beside me on the sofa.

“Oh, don’t worry, I’m not going.”

He started breathing again.

But if it were possible to teleport, India is one place where I would like to go. I would like to see the Taj Mahal for myself.

Because no matter how many times you see a place, in no matter how many pictures, you never know what a place is really like till you’ve been there yourself.

For example, the first time I actually stood in the Oval Office—thanks both to a relative who worked in the White House and a president who was out of town—I was overwhelmed. Not by the majesty of it or the grandeur but by the exact opposite.

It was so much smaller than I expected. Ordinary almost.

But somehow that only made the place even more impressive rather than less.

There’s only one other spot in the world where I’ve had that same reaction and that’s the place where I accompanied my fifth-grader on a special visit: the New York Stock Exchange.

Not right on the floor, but a nearby observation gallery.

A Look on the Lighter Side It was a slow day and some of the excitement had permanently gone from the place, with many transactions moving from in-person to electronic exchanges elsewhere. But even so, I remember that dual feeling: first, “This is it? That’s all there is? After all we’ve heard, and suffered, from what happens in this place?” And then the immediate realization. “But of course!

Momentous things aren’t made momentous by the size of the room they happen in or the

furnishings, but by the people there and the history they are making.”

Sometimes all your senses are involved. When I first set foot in Hong Kong, I was overcome by a distinctive perfume I would always know again but cannot describe. The ingredients I can put a name to would include garbage, fish and rotting fruit. I soon decided, “If I have to put up with a noisy, smelly, traffic-jammed island, I’ll take Manhattan.”

There is one place right here on Long Island with a special quality that must be seen in person to be believed. It came to me straight from the pages of “The Great Gatsby.” Long before I moved here, I was aware that F. Scott Fitzgerald’s homage to Jazz Age America was set on the North Shore. Whenever anyone visited here, I delighted in telling them that Great Neck was Gatsby’s “West Egg” and Port Washington, my new home town, was “East Egg.” But in all my local travels around Manhasset Bay, whether

with my kids to the Snapper Derby at the Town Dock, on the water for HarborFest, or watching the waves from my allergist’s office on the Great Neck shoreline, I never saw anything that could possibly have inspired Fitzgerald’s double-barreled idea.

Never, that is, until one summer day when I happened to be standing near the water at a Port yacht club. I was waiting for one of my boys to finish a sailing lesson. As I idly looked out at the water, I realized — from this spot, and this spot ONLY — the two shorelines appeared to curve in toward each other, before going their separate ways to Long Island Sound.

Which meant that somehow, for some reason, F. Scott Fitzgerald must once have stood in the exact spot where I was standing!

For an instant, I felt a part of literature. Sometimes you have to travel miles for these realizations, but sometimes you’re lucky enough to find them right at home. This year I’m wishing for some of both.

Tattooing is more than meets the eye

T

attoos were not big when I was growing up. I didn’t know anyone with a tattoo aside from Popeye, who had two anchors tattooed on his massive forearms.

When I was a teenager, the only kid I recall with a tattoo went to a high school that we competed against in wrestling. He had Air Force wings on one of his outer biceps. Although he was a very good wrestler, when he stepped out onto the mat I imagined his badass tattoo intimidated some opponents, giving him a psychological edge.

I don’t recall seeing many people with tattoos in the ensuing years, except for a few military veterans. That all seemed to change by the time I moved to Long Beach in 1978. One of the unique aspects of living in a beach community is that everyone is more than half-naked from June through September – neighbors, store clerks, bus drivers, school principals, nurses, doctors and just about everyone else.

Seeing people outside of their usual surroundings wearing next to nothing was odd at first. I often did a double take thinking, “I

know that person, but I can’t place them.” In time, though, it seemed ordinary.

As the years unfolded like a flip art book, more and more people paraded along the shoreline sporting tattoos. There were women with delicate ankle or wrist tattoos, muscle guys with barbed wire tattoos wrapped around their biceps and still more women with tattoos on their backs just north of their bikini bottoms.

In time the tattoos evolved into more elaborate designs covering more real estate. There were full and half sleeves, as well as leg, chest, stomach and back tattoos. The art ranged from simple decorative line drawings to more ornate designs in many styles, including portraiture, realism, tribal, Japanese and American Traditional with its trademark bold lines and bright colors.

Some tattoos consisted of lettering alone with personal messages, Bible verses or Chinese characters. Whatever the choice, committing indelible ink to one’s body is often infused with personal meaning.

My education on tattooing accelerated dramatically after my youngest son Darren decided to pursue the craft. Fast forward: Once he became established in NYC, during his visits home we often walked along the Long Beach boardwalk and talked tattooing.

What I had not given much thought to before our conversations is that a truly professional tattoo artist is more than a technician, but someone who takes a holistic approach and intuitively understands the body-mind-spirit connection that is essential for op-

timizing the client experience.

For many, tattoos are integral to their identity. In more instances than one might imagine, tattoos are related to trauma and loss. A tattooist’s conversations with their clients before, during and after getting a tattoo are essential. Tattooing, for many, is far more than an in-and-out encounter and can range anywhere from hours to days and weeks.

New York City-based tattoo artist Tamara Santibañez has provided coverups for women affected by incarceration and human trafficking and advocates for integrating healing and traumainformed care into the tattooing experience. Santibañez explained that for many incarcerated or trafficked women, their original tattoos were applied under coercive conditions.

Santibañez, who authored “Could This Be Magic: Tattooing as Liberation Work,” cautions that “tattooing can activate trauma in a number of ways, most immediately because we are working directly with people’s bodies, and bodies can often hold complicated histo-

ries and experiences.” As leading trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk put it, “the body keeps the score.”

Recognizing the presence of trauma, Santibañez stresses, is the first step to avoid re-traumatizing or further hurting clients.

Among the conversations I had with Darren, two stories come to mind. One was about a vibrant young woman whose back was terribly scarred after a nasty run in with a propeller in a boating accident. The other was about a much older woman who was grieving the death of her sister.

He recalled how he approached each of them and allowed space for them to tell their stories and give voice to the needs that brought them to him in the first place. It became clear to me that this led to a collaborative relationship that made all the difference.

Today, I see the innumerable tattoos that pass me by on the shoreline in a new light, understanding that most carry more profound and sometimes unimaginable meaning than I could have ever imagined.

Plastics pollution’s key role in global warming

D

id you see the movie “Don’t Look Up” this holiday season? For decades, scientists have been warning about the long-term climate consequences of unchecked greenhouse gas emissions. Yes, we must look directly at what’s happening and take action right now to slow down climate change by transitioning towards a fossil-fuel-free economy.

Did you know that plastic is one of the main drivers of climate change? Plastics emit greenhouse gases at every point of their life cycle, from extraction to production and disposal. If the plastic industry were a country, it would be the world’s fifth largest emitter, after China, the United States, India and Russia. The role of petrochemicalbased plastic in rising temperatures must be addressed.

In a recent report,”The New Coal: Plastics and Climate Change, Beyond Plastics,” a Bennington College environmental group warns that The U.S. plastic industry releases at least 232 million tons of greenhouse gases each year, equal to 116 average sized coal-fired power plants. With the global trend towards electrifying the transpor-

tation and power sector, the fossil fuel industry is making up for their losses and investing billions in expansion of plastic production facilities. Accelerating the warming effect that we experience as a climate crisis, plastics are primed to outpace coal in driving climate change by 2030.

Global efforts to reduce emissions and slow climate change are threatened by the industry’s planned petrochemical build-out.

According to Bloomberg Philanthropies and Beyond Coal, 65 percent of coal plants have been retired. This achievement should be celebrated, not canceled out with emissions from plastic production.

The raw ingredient for plastic production — ethane — is extracted from fracked “natural” gas.

Fracking compromises soil health while degrading wetlands and is toxic to water sources as well as air. It’s certainly a misnomer to call fracked gas “natural.” In energy intensive ethane cracker plants, high temperatures “crack” the molecular bonds of ethane to create ethylene.

Ethylene pellets, or “nurdles,” are shipped across the world for plastic production and are a major source of pollution on land and sea.

Look up the most recent plastic pellet spill just off the west coast of Sri Lanka where about 1,680 tons of nurdles were released into the ocean when a fire broke out on board X-Press Pearl. As you can imagine, this spill had devastating effects on wildlife and livelihoods in the region. These spills happen on top of the 10 million tons of plastic documented to litter the ocean each year in the form of plastic waste that breaks down into trillions of micro- and nanoscale pieces with unknown public health consequences.

Keep in mind that less than 2

percent of single-use plastic packaging is efficiently recycled. Nurdles are aptly called “mermaid tears” by activists mourning the state of the ocean.

The petrochemical industry aims to take advantage of our addiction to single-use plastic packaging and lock us into dirty energy economics with the proposed buildouts of a number of ethane cracker plants. Concentrated along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, the majority of U.S. ethane cracker plants are located in low-income communities of color.

Some 90 percent of the facilities are located in 18 communities where residents earn 28 percent less than the average U.S. household and are 67 percent more likely to be of color. Communities living next to power plants are — in addition to poverty — dealing with a host of pollution-related health issues, including cancers, neurological problems, cardiovascular and respiratory disease. In fact, plastic production is yet another form of environmental racism.

Formosa Plastics plans on building a highly disputed plastic factory on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. James, La., in a

predominantly Black community where they’ll knowingly disturb unmarked burial sites of formerly enslaved people. This industrial region suffers from elevated cancer rates and is known as “Cancer Alley” or “Death Alley.” A new plastic plant in this region threatens to discharge even more toxic chemicals into the air and water.

The people who pay the price for our convenience have had enough. Residents of St. James Parish have organized as RISE St. James and we can stand in solidarity with them as we demand the government stop the petrochemical build-out. We must demand that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the EPA and the White House’s Council on Environmental Quality reject this and all new permits. Beloved teacher shows impact of a person

O

nce nominated for a Pulitzer prize, Roger Ames was a world-class composer and could have taught at the most prestigious music conservatories in the world.

And he did, but he also chose to teach here at Great Neck North High School.

On Friday, just after this esteemed and beloved man passed away after battling ALS, I joined a zoom memorial that went on for hours.

To hear the outpouring of emotion, hearing the stories of how this man affected lives, how appreciated he was, you were reminded about the impact one person can have, particularly a teacher, who interacts at critical moments in a child’s development.

This comment, from Lili Ivester who became an actor, was actually more typical than you

would expect: “ the lives you have touched are quite literally immeasurable. Thank you for everything you taught me about Art and about Humanity.

“Thank you for believing in me and loving me and welcoming my whole family into your heart and home. I am beyond grateful for the impact you had and continue to have on my life. Thank you for sharing your talent, thank you for sharing your passion, thank you for sharing your love and your belief in all of us. I only hope that my children will be lucky enough to have a ‘chorus room’ like yours someday.”

And from Jake Levy: “We were spoiled in the halls of Great Neck North. Roger Ames was no ordinary high school music teacher. He is the kindest, most passionate man that thrives on seeing his students succeed. Having gone forth into a profession surrounded by music

and performance, I carry with me Roger’s enthusiasm and all the lessons about life, music, and everything in between that he taught me. I would not be where I am today without his guidance and love that he brought to me and so many of my peers. His legacy will live on eternally through many gen-

English teacher Jeff Gilden, who worked so closely with Ames on the stunningly innovative, impactful STAGES program (for seniors in their last semester, when they would otherwise tune out of school), wrote, “You demonstrated, every day, the joy of creation and the beauty of collaboration, and the 500 students who went through that program carry with them, to this day, the memories of an experience that could not have been had anywhere else or with anyone else other than you A lot of people have commented about how talented you were at creating space for people to feel comfortable and loved and special all of us can recall our individual moments with you and the specific care you took, the impact you had, the change

you fostered, the acceptance you conveyed, the belief in the self you inspired. It was a great gift.

“But equally great was what you did for us collectively Yes, you made us feel comfortable and important and special, but you also helped us to want to make others feel that way. You were always proudest of what we accomplished together, with each other and for each other. Your love for the people in your life was boundless, as was your ability to find goodness everywhere. But you also encouraged us to have that love for each other and to find that goodness in each other and to use that to create something larger than ourselves.

For me, that’s what makes the art you inspired all of us to create with you so special — it came from an ‘us.’ And that ‘us,’ in all its forms and permutations, lives on.”

2021 was the year of personal solitude

T

he year started out in chaos on Jan. 6 when we tuned in to see an angry, pro-Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol building, a fitting ending to what most considered to be an unusual and unsettling presidential reign. The Trump era was reluctantly, obstinately and somewhat violently coming to an end and the nation hoped to finally be able to exhale and return to some kind of normalcy.

But normalcy was not to be had. We could not slip from the grip of COVID and its many effects, including unemployment, supply chain delays and labor shortages. Added to these sobering events were our chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and the collapse of the condo in Surfside, Fla., and one began to search for some hope among all this rubble.

Instead we spent the year in a mad rush for vaccines to insure our survival. This all sounds like a scary movie except that it happened for real. It would be hard to say that 2021 was a good year because it was not.

From my perspective as a practicing psychoanalyst, I would say we have entered a turning point in our culture. There has been an accumulation of trends that seem to be pushing us into paranoia, anxiety, fear, exhaustion, loneliness and despair. I can see why all the zombie flicks and the Walking Dead TV shows have

gained so much traction. They reflect our current state of mind.

We are now best described as a quarantine nation with citizens who have a growing fear of neighbors and an understandable reluctance to participate in cultural rituals in churches, restaurants, theaters or cinemas. Half the labor force works from home and therefore no longer engage in the daily rituals of handshakes, coffee breaks and lunch with fellow workers. Instead, they remain in a No Man’s Land of Zoom calls and texting.

This process of social isolation and the extinction of community was well in place long before COVID hit. James Kunstler wrote “The Geography of Nowhere” in 1993 where he discussed how suburban sprawl, poor urban planning and the automobile had successfully destroyed our communal environment. This was followed by Robert Putnam of Harvard, who wrote the book “Bowling Alone” in 2000 where he sounded the alarm about America’s declining social capitol and the extinction of community.

More recently the chilling docudrama, “The Social Dilemma,” explored how social media is designed to nurture addictions, isolation and disinformation and how it produces depression.

You add these trends together with the sense of fear, worry and paranoia that COVID has

produced and you can argue that we have entered a turning point in modern civilization. We can see these concerns expressed in many blockbuster dystopian films, including “Blade Runner,” “The Matrix,” “The Terminator” and “I am Legend” where the protagonist lives an isolated life filled with fear and the battle to survive.

That is exactly what we are doing now. We are trying to survive in a world filled with deadly viruses and others who may be carriers of the disease. This is not exactly what one would call living the good life. Instead, we have entered the age of the neurological disorders including depression, Attention Deficit Disorder, Borderline Personality, and burnout. All this accrues because we no longer have what is called “a good enough holding environment.”

As Hillary Rodham Clinton once wrote, it takes a village to raise a child. She ought to have written another book entitled “It Takes a Village to be a Human Being.” Zoom calls, texting and TV are not enough to live a good life where you feel safe and embraced by daily rituals like getting coffee in the café and sharing a laugh or two with a neighbor.

COVID has ushered in a new age which seems to be filled more with foreboding than with goodwill. What ever happened to the good life that we seemed to have in America’s grasp not so many years ago? I saw an old documentary about the 1964 World’s Fair, which is where I had my first job selling Italian ices at People to People Fiesta. The fair’s theme was “Peace Through Understanding” and it showcased a bright and hopeful mid-century American culture.

At summer’s end I went off to college, America became embroiled in Vietnam, then came Nixon’s impeachment, Altamont, Charlie Manson, the end of flower power and America’s head has been spinning ever since.

Who could have guessed that Don McLean’s No. 1 tune “American Pie” would be such an accurate forecaster of this sobering trend.

You will recall the repeating phrases such as “Bye-bye Miss American pie, “This’ll be the day that I die”, and “The day the music died” foretelling all the endings and disillusionments soon to come.

Yes, “Bye-bye Miss American pie” make way for vaccines, booster shots, masks and Zoom calls.

These are the breathtaking days of solitude and worry. I fear that all of life’s simplicity and beauty is slowly being smothered by endless advances that our civilization gives birth to.

Remembering January 6th a year later

J

anuary 6th of 2021 was a day that many of us won’t forget – a day filled with trauma, fear, nervousness, and shock as we all watched a mob of insurrectionists violently storm our Capitol, attack police officers, terrorize our lawmakers, and threaten our Democracy. The vivid images of crowds in MAGA and riot gear chanting things like “take it back” and “U.S.A.” remain clear in many Americans’ heads.

I clearly remember the feeling of helplessness and anguish as I sat at home with my husband and three children and watched Trump supporters breach the security barriers outside the Capitol in the name of their former President.

I listened in despair as President Trump spoke at a press conference just outside the White House, moments before the attack, encouraging his followers to “walk down to the Capitol” to “take back our country” not with “weakness”

but “with strength.”

His baseless claims about voter fraud and a rigged election fueled the fury of his supporters outside the Capitol and emboldened them to act out in violence with no regard for our Democracy.

But as many of us use the anniversary of this devastating attack to reflect on the past year, our farright counterparts have already begun to rewrite history. Many of them have baselessly claimed that the entire event was a hoax and premeditated set-up by the FBI or the Democrats.

At the same time, some Congressional representatives have refused to support the establishment of a special commission or committee to investigate the insurrection and its participants.

This attempt to rewrite history can set a dangerous precedent but at this moment, we all have the opportunity to do better. This is not an issue for the left or the right to

deal with, but a critical moment for all of us to unite and move forward as a Democracy.

The reality is that January 6th was just a small glimpse into the world that can erupt if we continue to elect leaders who lead with fear, anger, hatred, and violence as opposed to courage, acceptance, and principle.

The insurrection left many right-wing conservatives with their own distorted reality, but it also left everyone else with a taste of the world that would exist if we allow hatred and entitlement to govern our country. If the right people don’t stand up for what is right, our future – and our children’s future – is in jeopardy.

I am running to represent New York’s Third Congressional District because as a mom of three, I want to help create a world where unity is part of our core values. I’m running to create a world for them that is defined by love

and compassion for our neighbors — even the ones we don’t know and have never met. I’m running because care for our communities looks like paid family leave, free childcare, universal preschool, affordable care for our seniors, and a healthy planet for my children to grow old in.

I’m running because our children deserve a world free from the COVID pandemic, just as much as they deserve a world free from the gun violence pandemic. And I’m running because we urgently need to pass voting rights legislation so everyone can have a say in the policies that shape our lives.

For four years, President Trump fueled the fears of the right with hate speech, unfounded conspiracy theories, and by feeding into racist generalizations of minority groups – yet working-poor families across the country continued to face many of the same hardships that they had been fac-

ing for generations.

What working families need right now is a leader who is willing to put them first and who will ensure they receive the resources they need to get through this pandemic and beyond.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I understand the adversity and inequity that working-poor families face because I’ve lived it.

Now, I am running for Congress because together we can create a better, more just government that works for, not against, our families. We need change and with me, Long Islanders will see that change.

Stop attacks on Republican officials to heal

et me just say this: What the insurrectionists did by attacking our Capital was appalling not to mention an assault on our democracy. The Jan. 6 attack was

a sad day for our country, and we must not let this happen again.

But what I don’t like is the attack, in my view, by Democrats on my fellow Republi-

A response to Donald Trump suckers

was happy to see that this newspaper publishes letters with opposing viewpoints. In the Dec. 31 issue, two letters opposed the viewpoint of my letter titled “Adolf Hitler, Donald Trump and Trump suckers” that compared Trump to Hitler. They questioned such comparisons and provided their facts that purportedly supported their position. It was suggested that I should read about the atrocities committed

by Hitler and the Nazis. Fact is, I clearly pointed out many such atrocities.

Hitler connected to the German people by promoting nationalism and his influence can be seen in old black-and-white photo images and newsreels that show the masses with arms outstretched toward their fuhrer, followed by Germans doing their patriotic duty by burning synagogues and shattering Jewishowned shops.

the events during the insurrection of Jan. 6 brought to you live on all the television networks. Fact!

About 150 police officers were injured and four died in the attack.

But the Republicans deceived and recast the attack on the Capitol as a “Normal Tourist Visit.” The BIG LIE!” Has that expression ever been used before?

Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s economic woes, claiming that immigrants and Jews were taking jobs from Germans and many were criminals and rapists. What followed was the bureaucratic, state-sponsored murder of 6 million Jews. As for Trump, he blamed immigrants for making us unsafe, separating migrant parents from their children at the border and putting the children into cages. Muslims were banned from entering the United States.

I am accused of “a number of half-truths and some absolute untruths” such as “Adolf Hitler had a deep understanding of mass psychology and mass propaganda.”

Fact! “Hitler took pride in being a master salesman and showman.”

Historians agree that Hitler and Trump were both masters of mass communication. Hitler mastered talking to the masses, utilizing newspapers and using the new medium of radio to his advantage. Trump’s oratory inspired many and he mastered television and social media.

Hitler’s party existed only to attain power, destroying bureaucratic rationality through the use of propaganda. In his “Mein Kampf,’ he wrote; “In the BIG LIE there is always a certain force of credibility.” Trump is a narcissist who believes in conspiracy theories and is intolerant of those who disagree with him. He boasted of having “total authority,” schemed to overthrow a legitimate election and as Liz Cheney has said, “He’s a threat to American democracy”.

The letter writer repeats what I wrote; “if you repeat a lie often enough, some people might believe it.” The New York Times, a national newspaper of record,

reported that Trump over his four years as president made 30,573 misleading claims.

I was wrong stating that World War II ended when Germany surrendered to the Allies in May 1945. The date of Germany’s surrender is correct, but the war actually ended in early September when Japan surrendered. The letter writer went on to discuss the extraneous subject of Japan, even mentioning that Trump “just doesn’t care for Japanese food all that much,” which has nothing to do with my article. But it is a tactic used by Trump and the Republicans to simply change the subject and avoid dealing with the topic.

I am asked if I “really believe that tens of millions of Americans could have been fooled enough to vote for someone with all of those monumental failings?” I respond by asking how could tens of millions of Americans be convinced to go unvaccinated against Covid-19 when the risk of testing positive for Covid-19 was 5 to 10

times greater and the risk of dying 14 to 20 times greater.

But what do scientists and doctors know compared to politicians? After all, on Feb. 27, 2020, Trump in talking about the Coronavirus said, “the outbreak will be temporary. It’s going to disappear. On July 4, 2020, he said, “99 percent of Covid-19 cases are totally harmless.”

Tell a lie often enough and keep repeating it and people will come to believe it, especially if the people are not smart enough to realize the lies are repeated to them. I’m tired of hearing all these lies being repeated by people who are ignorant, because they lack knowledge, information or awareness of what’s being told to them, and stupid, for having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense. Trump suckers! That says it all.

Blank Slate Media will host a virtual forum on the mental health crisis and the impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on individuals.

According to research conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization focusing on national health issues, roughly 40 percent of adults throughout the country have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

The forum, which will occur virtually on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., will feature three experts,

Dr. Liat Jarkon, Jeffrey Reynolds and Andrew Malekoff, who will discuss the issue of mental health and what could be done by elected officials and other organizations to remedy it.

Jarkon is the director of the Center for Behavioral Health and an assistant professor for NYIT’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. A graduate of the college in 1987, Jarkon has specialized in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry for three decades. Jarkon also trained at Zucker Hillside Hospital and Schneider Children’s Hospital.

During her time at the Center for Behavioral Health, Jarkon has sparked efforts to have a more open dialogue surrounding mental health and in-

creasing awareness for various mental health conditions and diseases.

Reynolds is the president and CEO of the Family and Children’s Association. He is a man of many missions and one vocation: to help the underserved and the at-risk.

Throughout his 25-year career, Reynolds has committed his efforts to strengthening notfor-profit organizations and creating programs that serve vulnerable and often invisible members of the Long Island community.

FCA is one of Long Island’s largest health and human organizations with 340 staff members, 200 volunteers and more than 30 programs. Reynolds,

who was also named one of Blank Slate Media’s Top Business Leaders in Nassau County, has experience in fortifying not-for-profit organizations through management and securing increased funding.

Malekoff is the former executive director and CEO of the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center in Roslyn Heights, where he has worked since 1977.

He is the editor-in-chief of Social Work with Groups: A Journal of Community and Clinical Practice, has taught as an adjunct professor at the Adelphi and New York University Schools of Social Work, and serves as a board member for the International As-

sociation for Social Work with Groups. He was named Social Work Community Practitioner of the Year by the New York State Social Work Education Association.

Widely published, Malekoff has presented his work and facilitated workshops across the United States and Canada.

Malekoff has also written hundreds of newspaper columns and op-ed pieces, including for Blank Slate Media’s six publications.

Conversation with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson On Sunday, Jan. 16 at 3:00 PM, Stephen C. Widom Cultural Arts at Emanuel will present a Video Conversation with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson (retired), former chief of staff to the late General Colin Powell, moderated by NY1 news anchor, host of Inside City Hall, and CNN political analyst, Errol Louis. Their discussion is entitled: “What Will It Take to Manage the Crises Ahead?”

For six years Colonel Wilkerson has been a member of the Climate and Security Working Group, principally a gath-

ering of former members of DOD, DHS, NASA, NOAA, and other government departments and agencies, as well as many on active service, meeting quarterly or more frequently to examine the connections between a rapidly changing climate, on the one hand, and national and international security requirements on the other.

According to Wilkerson, “During these gatherings, it has become starkly evident that the challenges presented by the climate crisis are not only massive and on almost every front, domestic and international, but are life-threatening —

perhaps to the entire human population on Earth. Yet both adaptive and ameliorative action, by individual states and by the international community, is woefully inadequate.”

Col. Wilkerson will offer his views in a conversation with moderator Errol Louis on what it will take to change this political lethargy into meaningful action, in addition to commenting on the high stakes issues confronting Americans with regard to the Republican attempt to overturn the presidential election results of 2020, voting rights and the attempt to suppress the vote in upcoming elections, and the threat to democracy that these and other issues underscore.

Lawrence Wilkerson is Visiting Professor of Government and Public Policy at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. His last positions in government were as the late Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff (2002-05), and associate director of the State Department’s Policy Planning staff under the directorship of Ambassador Richard N. Haass.

Before serving at the State Department, Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army, including as Deputy Executive Officer to then-General Colin Powell when he commanded the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989), special assistant to General Powell when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93), and as director and deputy director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia (1993-97).

Since leaving the State Department, Wilkerson speaks to groups all over America, publishes articles in newspapers and magazines across the country, and regularly offers commentary on television.

The benefits of music instruction for young learners

M

any children are introduced to music instruction at school.

After being introduced to band, chorus and various instruments, students may be eager to explore music.

Young students are often introduced to the recorder or ukulele in the early grades and then given the opportunity to join primary bands as they move through elementary school and into middle school. Some children also may want to supplement school music lessons with private music tutors, who can provide more in-depth instruction.

Parents considering making a commitment to music instruction may find that kids benefit from being

involved with music in many ways, some of which may be surprising. · The New England Board of Higher Education says several studies show that consistent music education improves vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Emerging evidence points to an area of the brain that controls both musical ability and language comprehension as being more closely related than previously thought. · Music education may help young children learn words and how to pronounce them, as learning to play music enables them to process the many new sounds they hear from others.

· Researchers have discovered a strong relationship between participating in school arts and academic success as demonstrated by students’ grade point averages, according to the National Association for Music Education. · The relationship between music and academic performance has been studied for decades. As far back as 1988, studies have been conducted about the benefits of music education.

An analysis of data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 demonstrated a significant correlation between participation in school music groups and achievement in math and English. And a 1996 study published in Nature found first graders who participated in special music classes as part of an arts study program saw their reading skills and math proficiency increase dramatically.

· Introducing music lessons to young children can have profound effects on their social development. Music fosters greater trust and cooperation, as well as a sense of community and belonging. · Another benefit of music education is it allows children to harness their creativity and express it in a healthy way. · The music instruction company Music U says children with developmental disorders and mental health issues might be able to unlock their potential with music. Music therapy has been shown to affect significant change in children with autism-spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, attachment disorders, cerebral palsy, and more.

Music instruction both in and out of the classroom can be a benefit to young learners.

Strategies to ease the burden of student loan debt

Student loan debt in the United States is growing. According to EducationData.org, federal student loan debt has grown at an annual average rate of just under 28 percent since the start of the 21st century.

Private student loan debt also is a significant burden, totaling $132 billion by the end of 2020.

As student loan debt has risen, managing that debt has become an important component of financial planning. Individuals with student loan debt can look into various strategies to help ease their debt burdens. · Reconsider your employment.

As student loan debts have risen, employee repayment assistance programs once associated strictly with government jobs have grown in popularity at private companies.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed around the onset of the pandemic in 2020 included a tax-free provision for employer-sponsored loan assistance programs. The tax benefits helped both employees, who did not have to pay income taxes on loan assistance money provided by their employers, and businesses,

who received payroll tax exclusions on funds paid to employers via the program.

The CARES Act provision was temporary, but experts at Goldman Sachs have noted that many private companies have gotten creative in regard to helping employees pay down student loan debt. For example, some have allowed employees to redirect PTO and vacation pay toward their student loans. Individuals with sizable student loan debts whose companies do not currently offer such benefits can look for new employment opportunities with firms that will help them pay down their debts. · Consolidate loans. Consolidation is often viewed through the lens of simplifying loan repayment by combining all loans into one so borrowers with multiple loans only need to make a single payment each month. That impression is correct, but there’s more to consolidation than simplifying repayment. The experts at Credit.com note that consolidation typically allows borrowers to change their repayment terms. Longer repayment terms will increase

the amount of interest borrowers pay over the life of the loans. But longer repayment terms also allow borrowers to pay less each month, which can free up money to pay bills and build savings for large purchases, including a home.

· Know your loans. Many borrowers signed their student loan documents when they were 18, while others might have signed when they were 22 or 23 and about to enter graduate school. It’s easy for young borrowers to overlook important details like interest rates, but individuals who have multiple loans must recognize that the interest rates on loans that have not been consolidated almost certainly vary. Learn the interest rates on your loans and make a concerted effort to pay extra principle each month on the loans with the higher interest rates. Doing so can save borrowers a lot of money over time and get them that much closer to eradicating their student loan debt.

Student loan debt is a significant burden for millions of individuals.

Finding ways to ease that burden can help borrowers secure their financial futures.

Innovative mapping project comes to L.I. The New Amsterdam History Center has received a generous grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to extend Mapping Early New York, our innovative mapping project, to all of Long Island.

Mapping Early New York is a house by house, lot by lot map of New Amsterdam.

It reveals who lived where, how they lived, even what they drank in this 17th century city.

Now, thanks to this grant, Mapping Early New York will do the same for Long Island.

Comparing Trump to Hitler is fair play

S

everal letter writers continue to complain about comparisons of Donald Trump to Hitler.

I certainly agree that Hitler, who directed the murder of six million Jews, was an unparalelled monster. And I know it’s a drop

in the ocean by comparison, but Trump did say he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it, that his supporters would be fine with it.

And all evidence so far is that he was right, or at least not much of his abhorrent behavior both-

ers them.

One of your letter writers said: “I know you hate him and think he is a politically incorrect vulgarian, but until he starts throwing people into ovens don’t compare Donald Trump to Hitler.” The key word there is

“until.”

Remember he started his cult five years ago by attacking immigrants, followed shortly— with help from Jeff Sessions— by separating children from their parents. And he continues to make immigrants scapegoats

for the grievance that he fulminates.

I wonder why, say in 1933, Hitler didn’t introduce red MAKE THE REICH GREAT AGAIN caps.

Financing for LIRR’s 3rd track in question

D

uring Gov. Kathy Hochul’s State of the State speech she said “the $1 trillion federal infrastructure bill proposed and signed by President Biden will help pay for this and other roads, rail and bridge projects.” Hochul also promised to complete the LIRR Third Track project this year. Her statement, perhaps written by a ghost speech writer or transportation adviser, made no sense when you review the project history.

In 2017, the MTA added $3 billion, which included $1.95 billion for the LIRR Main Line Third Track to the $29 billion 2015 — 2019 Five Year Capital Program Plan. This brought it up to $32 billion. These dollars supplemented $600 million previously available resulting in the project being 100 percent fully funded. In January

2018, the MTA and LIRR awarded a $1.8 billion contract to the joint venture 3rd Track Constructors made up of Dragados USA Inc./ John P. Picone Inc., Halmar International LLC and CCA Civil Inc., for construction, Stantec for design, Cameron Engineering for engineering and Rubenstein Associates for community outreach to support final design, engineering and construction of the LIRR Main Line Third Track.

An additional contract for $99.9 million was awarded to Arup-Jacobs joint venture to assist the LIRR in project management.

The MTA LIRR could not have legally awarded these contracts without funding already in place.

Four years later, with 11 months to go before promised introduction of service, a majority of the work has been completed or is

underway. The remaining balance of work is anticipated to be completed prior to the promised December 2022 introduction of passenger service to coincide with opening ot East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal.

One of the few critical exceptions is replacement of the Garden City Denton Avenue Bridge with a below ground roadway. This work is just now underway. Most overall funds have already been expended or are accounted for under previously awarded contracts.

Later in the year, the project emphasis will change. More time will be allocated toward completion of inspection and acceptance of all contractors work. This would include interlockings and signal systems, switches, electrical components, power substations and elevators to name a few.

There is also the need for completion of contract(s) punch list items to insure project components were constructed based upon contract specifications along with systems testing to insure trains can operate safely and reliably, These final activities represent a small portion of cost to the overall $2.6 billion project budget.

The LIRR followed state SEQUA rather than the federal NEPA environmental review process. Compliance with NEPA is a requirement to be eligible for Federal Transit Administration funding. Why would FTA consider funding for this project when it is already 100 percent locally funded and close to completion?

Is this a back door way for the MTA to substitute federal funding to offset some of the missing $15

billion in Congestion Price Tolling revenues?

The MTA $51 billion 2020 — 2024 Five Year Capital Plan was adopted in late 2019 under the assumption that $15 billion would come from Congestion Price Tolling. Not a dime will appear until June 2023 or later. How will the MTA raise $15 billion over 18 months rather than five years?

Is Donald Trump like Hitler? But of course

I

’ve found the recent letters decrying the comparison of Trump to Hitler highly amusing. Actually, they’re a sign of America’s decline into a secondrate power, but I figure we better laugh while we can, especially since people are so willing to humiliate themselves publicly.

Growing up in the 1950s after World War II, every American learned how Hitler came to power. It was unavoidable.

WWII was the equivalent of a million 9/11s, and no political and military history had ever been so meticulously documented in film, photographs and print.

So what causes Trumpists to take umbrage at such comparisons? The first reason is their knowledge of history is non-existent. The second is that ignorance is willful.

To remedy this, a few suggestions: First is to read William L. Shirer’s “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.” Released in 1960, it sold in the millions,

and to this day, I don’t think any single book has captured the full sweep of the Nazi rise in such detail, witnessed firsthand.

The second suggestion is to read Eric Hoffer’s “The True Believer.” The Trump adherent will immediately recognize himself when Hoffer writes “the quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard for the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world.” Or when it comes to acknowledging election results, “it is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible.”

The third suggestion is a dose of Hannah Arendt, who wrote of the “Banality of Evil.”

In wartime Germany, everyone—the clerk, the baker, the mechanic—not only could drive past nearby concentration camps with the windows rolled up, they could also pretend the stench of death that hung for

miles did not exist but had no idea what was taking place inside them.

Just as Trump supporters today pretend the massive national effort to suppress voting rights doesn’t exist or the public calls to hang Dr. Fauci or execute General Milley “live on C-SPAN” aren’t coming from their own party. Or that appeals to treat the history of Nazism “impartially” in our schools isn’t coming from Republicans. Neither does the evidence that Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, was actively organizing an overthrow of a duly elected government.

Or when Trump pressured Georgia’s secretary of state to “find” him enough votes to overturn the election and threaten the official with a criminal offense.

Nothing matters.

There are other voices, like the late architect Stephen B. Jacobs, who wrote that “America today is exactly like 1930 Berlin.” He should know. He sur-

vived Buchenwald. Then there’s Reagan’s former solicitor general who was born in Prague in 1936 and says today “he hears the same tunes.”

How can anyone look at pre-war footage of Hitler’s Brown Shirts driving their trucks through German cities, bedecked with flags and nationalist regalia, and not see a carbon copy in today’s “Proud Boys” and “Patriot Front” engaging in precisely the same intimidation?

The question to Trump supports decrying a comparison of Trump to Hitler is a simple one: How do you NOT see it?

Lastly is Frederick Bedell’s plea, where he writes:“What the insurrectionists did by attacking our Capitol was appalling not to mention an assault on our democracy. The Jan. 6 attack was a sad day for our country, and we must not let this happen again.

But what I don’t like is the attack, in my view, by Democrats on my fellow Republicans.”

Who does Mr. Bedell think

is wholly responsible for the attempted coup? The Whigs?

Mr. Bedell would also do well to read the words of author A.R. Moxon:“Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but because of a hope for restored patriotism or a sense of economic anxiety or a hope to preserve their religious values or dislike of their opponents or raw politic opportunism or convenience or ignorance or greed. That word is “Nazi.”

Nobody cares about their motives.”

The Republican Party, to the last man, is a cancer on American polity. There are no exceptions. And if Trump wins again, they will all fall in with him like a heap of swords piled as delicately as jackstraws.

Repairs vs. upgrades before selling

I

am in process of soon to be selling my sister-in-law’s home in Oyster Bay. She has been renting it out for many, many years. We went to visit it to see whether or not repairs and/or upgrades would in the long run provide the biggest bang for her buck in the return on investment. Would she recoup her costs at the point of sale?

It obviously would sell quicker with the necessary repairs and upgrades that would make the place more desirable. However, would the sale price justify the inherent costs and would she receive back at least 100 percent of her money

or less in getting to the closing table? It will all depend on the costs of the repairs as well as whatever renovations that would be considered.

The first step is to determine what really needs to be repaired and the money that needs to be spent. The buyer will hire a home inspector to see the pros and cons with the condition of the home. Buyers don’t like surprises and I am quite sure sellers don’t either. I always recommend that owners of any home 20 years or older have it inspected in advance of putting their property on the market to see what things might pop up on the

buyer’s inspection.

Once that is determined, the next step is to get estimates and then repair those items.

Make sure the company or person you hire has referrals from those he/she had done business with recently as well as a few years ago. An excellent source is Googling for online reviews for the individual or corporation. Also whomever you hire make sure you verify that they are adequately insured with at least $1 million liability/completed operations coverage.

You should also ask for the contractor’s records, a certificate of insurance with your

name or corporation name as the person of interest or additional insurance as owner. You want to make sure that if any damages occur that the contractor’s insurance covers those issues and doesn’t fall back on yours.

The next thing to consider is whether any improvements should be done to get a higher selling price or after basic repairs are done should one sell in “as is” condition? One must determine a budget for improvements in advance. But at the same time decide what condition you want your place to be in when everything is completed and calculate if you will get back the money spent on upgrades.

Look for comparable sales of homes within your location with similar attributes, e.g. style, number of bedrooms, bathrooms. By evaluating their condition and observing photos of the homes will help you determine what level your home currently is and where you want it to be. This comparison will provide a good indication as to what you are selling and how you might maximize your profit.

Mayor Strauss not seeking re-election Continued from Page 1 Funds from agreements have led to improving the village’s water system, which has 52 miles of mains.

A new Water Department building on Westbury Avenue is on its way as well as a new firehouse to replace one that had to be torn down because of a truss in the roof becoming too unstable.

The cost of these projects was $26 million, the mayor said to residents at a Mineola Chamber of Commerce meeting last September.

With the help of grants, and a persistent effort to find money, Strauss said, all the changes came with a tax increase of 0.75%.

More recently, Strauss pushed the MTA and LIRR expansion project to make sure there were no problems with the Harrison Avenue parking garage, which opened in December. The building was delayed multiple years due to different issues, but Strauss kept it out of the village’s hands until it was in perfect condition.

When asked why he is not running for re-election, Strauss cited time and workload. Strauss is the assistant vice president of corporate security at Northwell Health.

If Pereira is elected mayor, his seat on the board would become vacant. Someone would have to be appointed to fill his seat and finish his term, similar to what Trustee Sartori is currently doing for

Pereira was elected to the board in 2008 and became deputy mayor in 2011.

He has lived in Mineola for over four decades and has the support of Strauss, according to the New Line Party’s news release.

“Paul has consistently fought to keep

our Mineola way of life,” the statement said. “He worked to lower debt and hold the line on taxes. He has voted time and time again to invest in infrastructure such as roads, sewers and clean water. Paul is the natural choice to succeed Mayor Scott Strauss and has his full backing.”

Sartori moved to the village with her

husband and two sons 17 years ago from Staten Island. Before her appointment to the board, Sartori was on the Mineola Board of Zoning Appeals for four years and has been active in the community through school organizations.

“Janine has taken her position very seriously,” the party said. “She has attended many events and meetings on behalf of the Mineola residents she was asked to serve. Her Degree in Finance and long history of involvement in our schools and community make her a solid choice for election as a Village Trustee this year.”

Running for the seat being vacated by Durham is resident Jeffrey Clark. Clark has been a Mineola resident for 35 years with his wife and six children.

He is currently a warden on the fire council of the Mineola Fire Department, where he previously served as chief. In addition, Clark was previously president of the Irish American Society and chosen as grand marshal for Mineola’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“Jeff has also coached his and many other children through the great athletic programs found in Mineola,” the news release said. “He is a great choice because he understands what it takes to keep Mineola a community of friends and families.”

According to the village, no other residents had filed petitions to run for mayor or the trustee positions as of Wednesday.

Officials blast Blakeman for mask order Continued from Page 3 Since the holidays, North Shore school districts have struggled to remain open following COVID-19 surges that leave staff members in qurantine.

On Monday, the Sewanhaka Central High School District announced that it will cancel midterm exams as a response to the state’s guidelines following COVID-19 outbreaks throughout New York.

In a statement to the community, Superintendent James Grossane said, “As of December 21, 2021, the New York State Education Department has canceled the administration of all the January 2022 New York State High School Regents Exams in response to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a continued focus on the emotional and social health of our students, and in conjunction with our professional teaching staff, the Sewanhaka Central High School District is canceling all

of the January 2022 midterm exams.”

Since the middle of December, all five schools in the district have undergone a brief period of remote learning in response to COVID-19 surges in the district.

Hochul said she and newly elected New York City Mayor Eric Adams believe students should be physically attending school, but stressed the need to do so safely.

“People who have more experience in county government would know that state government, state laws prevail,” Hochul said. There’s also the issue of the state Education Department, which has direct control over the funding of schools. I hope I don’t need to say anything more on that topic.”

Rosa, the commissioner of the state’s Education Department, released a statement saying that the department anticipates local school boards will defer to state guidance rather than the county’s order.

“Counties do not have the legal author-

ity to require boards of education to vote on specific issues,” Rosa said in a statement.

“School officers take an oath to obey all legal requirements. The State Education Department expects school boards will follow all legal requirements, including the facecovering regulation.”

Andy Pallotta, president of the New York State United Teachers, said the 600,000-member union supports Hochul’s mask-wearing mandate.

“It’s unbelievable that nearly two years into the pandemic we have to debate the critical importance of mask wearing as part of a layered COVID-19 mitigation strategy in schools,” Pallotta said in a statement.

“Particularly given the current spike in cases, now is not the time to do away with mask wearing in schools. Public health experts have been unequivocally clear that masks are an important part of the strategies designed to keep students, educators

and our communities safe. And the governor was clear this afternoon that state law prevails in this matter. We continue to support the state’s mask guidance for schools and call on all districts to continue following these guidelines.”

Garuav Passi, acting superintendent for the Manhasset school district, said Rosa told school district officials throughout the state that the mask mandate must be enforced, much to the ire of some parents attending a board meeting.

“The commissioner of education from the state of New York has told us that we do not have an option, we must enforce the mask mandate,” Passi said at the meeting last Thursday night. “Masks are required in our schools and it’s our intention to enforce the mask mandate by asking students to wear their masks, respectfully. If they don’t, then they are not in compliance with the school rule.”

Killed them all, of course” on a hot microphone, denied the allegations. Kathleen McCormack, the youngest of five children, married Durst in 1971.

Seven years ago, McCormack’s

sisters and then-101-year-old mother filed suit in state Supreme Court in Mineola against Durst, alleging that he had murdered Kathleen McCormack Durst and caused the family “extreme emotional distress, humiliation, mental and physical anguish, as well as economic losses” by keeping her body hidden.

Prosecutors claimed Durst first murdered Kathleen Durst, who was looking to divorce him, and years later shot Berman to cover his tracks. Berman, a journalist, was found dead in 2000 on Christmas Eve, lying in a pool of blood after being shot in the back of the head in her Los Angeles home.

Efforts to reach a member of the

McCormack family or Durst’s legal team for comment were unavailing.

Durst was also acquitted in the 2001 slaying of Morris Black, his elderly neighbor in Galveston, Texas, whose body was dismembered with an ax and bone saw. Prosecutors tied the Black slaying to alleged attempts by Durst to cover his tracks.

A contentious start for DeSena, town board Continued from Page 2 “We all occupied that Town Board suite, and while all didn’t agree on everything and had maybe some spirited disputes, we always kept it professional, civil and bipartisan,” De Giorgio said. “I never felt disrespected, I never felt that my colleagues on the Town Board, although they didn’t agree with me, were being disrespectful. I urge you as a private citizen and a former councilwoman to treat your newly elected representatives and fellow board members and town clerk with respect.”

More discussion took place among the board members on a resolution to appoint Chiara as town attorney.

He suceeds Leonard Kapsali, who retired after three years with the town.

Chiara, a Garden City resident, is the former acting Nassau County attorney.

McDonough approached the board again to clarify whether Chiara lived in North Hempstead, claiming that is a requirement for the position.

Later in the meeting, Troiano said that was untrue.

Republicans said they were not present for discussions regarding Chiara’s appointment. When asked more specifically about the process, including how many people were interviewed for the position, Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey, a Democrat, responded, “I don’t think it would be appropriate to go into the details.”

Adhami, a lawyer, said he had con-

cerns about not being involved in the interview process.

“I don’t know if the former county attorney has been in any cases where the town had an adverse position, that would be a clear conflict of interest as an attorney,” he said.

Adhami emphasized the need for transparency. He said that the agenda was released publicly 25 hours before the meeting and asked each member if he or she was in favor of transparency.

Chiara was appointed by a vote of 5-2, with DeSena voting yes due to his extensive resume, while saying that she objected to being left in the dark.

“I only object to the lack of the participation of the whole Town Board in his selection,” DeSena said.

More contention came from a personnel resolution to move the nine Democratic political appointees from the office of the supervisor and town clerk to noncompetitive and union jobs, which totals about $800,000 worth of transfers.

Weeks ago, DeSena called previous efforts she believed were being made to change the budget that was passed in October a “deceitful post-election stunt.”

She later backtracked from those comments, saying she was misinformed, but she said Thursday her budget was being cut with the shifting of employees.

Democrats said the funds in her budget remain the same as Bosworth’s.

Lurvey, in response to the resolution, said: “With a new supervisor tak-

ing office, it is important to help that person get acclimated to the new role and to provide much needed support.

The realignment of some positions helps ensure a smooth transition – it acknowledges the critical importance of institutional knowledge and government experience possessed by individuals in key leadership positions. It also allows the new supervisor to bring in her own people to dedicated positions that will report directly to her.”

Multiple Republicans asked what happened from October to January to require a change in the budget that Bosworth boasted was approved before Election Day in the spirit of transparency.

They were told by Troiano that things come up, sometimes unpredictably, that require changes.

In a statement to Blank Slate Media, Gordon Tepper, spokesman for the Town Board, said the budget is the same size as in the previous administration.

“Cuts were made in other areas to accommodate adjustments and free up funds for the Supervisor to fill her dedicated positions, resulting in a netzero impact to the budget,” he said.

“The Town’s AAA rating from Moody’s has been affirmed 11 times, and North Hempstead continues to operate within its traditionally balanced budget.”

The spokesman for the supervisor, Brain Devine, disagreed with the explanations.

“These seven positions were relocat-

ed without explanation or rationale to other Town Departments including four individuals directly now assigned to the Town Board, effectively increasing their budget by nearly $500,000, 40% more than the original 2022 budget allocation,” Devine said, referring to the seven noncompetitive jobs among the nine being transferred.

“Instead of listening to the people, Democratic Councilmembers have fought tooth and nail to protect these political appointees that previously comprised the bloated, top-heavy management of the Town of North Hempstead.”

The resolution also included the appointment of DeSena’s staff, which includes eight members to replace those who were transferred.

Before voting no, DeSena said she knows her staff can wait a few more weeks to be paid. The resolution passed 4-3, along party lines.

Troiano, who served on the Town Board from 2004 to 2009, personally welcomed DeSena’s staff to the Town of North Hempstead after the resolution passed.

The meeting concluded with members of the board saying that future meetings would be smoother. They also assured the new members that they look forward to getting a lot of work done together on behalf of town residents.

“We’re all going to be one big happy family,” said Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte.

George Santos, an economist, is running for the Republian nomination.

As it currently stands, New York’s Third Congressional District incorporates Nassau’s North Shore and parts of Queens and Suffolk Counties. Later this year, legislators will announce reshaped congressional districts that may affect NY-3’s constituency.

Kaiman said that he spoke with Suozzi, who he lost to in the 2016 multicandidate Democratic primary, regarding the seat and is assured the congressman is committed to his gubernatorial run and has no expectations of returning to his current post.

“If elected, I want to be able to dedicate my time and effort to the issues I think are important to the Democratic Party, but really important to the country,” Kaiman said.

were the three semifinalists named from Port Washington’s Paul D. Schreiber High School. Franchetti also tied in politics to his research, analyzing that and the nation’s economic impact from the coronavirus pandemic.

Manhasset High School and Herricks High School each had three students named Regeneron semifinalists. Rachel Lee, Shivani Tejas and Allison Zhang represented Manhasset, while Caitlin Chheda, Aanya Goel and Roshni Patel represented Herricks.

Additionally, North Shore High School’s Evelyn McCreery was named the lone semifinalist from her school. McCreery received praise from school officials for her work on researching the health effects of chemicals

leached from plastic into food by using a fruit fly.

“We are proud and overjoyed of Evelyn’s accomplishments,” North Shore Principal Eric Contreras said in a statement. “She is a talented scholar-athlete and researcher.

Falsely accused Donald Trump is not a Hitler

’d like to respond to a submission by Great Neck reader Robert D. Adams in the Jan. 7 edition in which Adams compares President Trump to Adolf Hitler.

There seems to be a trend by those on the pro-Socialist Left to compare everyone they are opposed to with National Socialist leader Adolf Hitler. It’s time to rationally address this adolescent

and grossly inaccurate, slanderous accusation with facts.

Pro-Capitalist and Pro-Israel Trump, whose daughter is Jewish, moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and actually deported an ex-Nazi. Not exactly the actions of a “Hitler” now is it?

Trump had the lowest unemployment for Blacks in U.S. history.

He established revitalization programs for Black communities,

signed a major criminal reform bill, made us energy independent, brought peace to the Middle East.

Tax cuts, the border wall initiated, better trade deals, promoted religious freedom. On and on, he worked tirelessly to make America stronger, freer and more prosperous for everyone. He kept his promises, all the while being falsely accused and falsely

impeached by Democrats, who at the same time accomplished nothing for the American people.

Adams refers to Trump as a “liar and the most immoral man ever to darken democracy.” Besides the fact that Adams is not aware that America is not a democracy, Adams again slanders the president yet doesn’t provide any proof. There is a saying that whatever Democrats accuse you

of, the opposite is true.

The irony of pro-Socialist Democrats labeling Trump a “Nazi” seems to be completely lost on Mr. Adams. Nevertheless, it’s time to stop casually applying the label of “Hilter” to opponents and return civility and facts to debate.

Don’t sugarcoat what Adolf Hitler did

I

am glad that so many people wrote in to express their disgust at the letter comparing Trump to Hitler. I was shocked by the headline and continue to be appalled at such a painful letter.

The comparison transcends politics to one so insensitive that it whitewashes the murder of 6 million Jewish people and millions of other “undesirables” who were murdered

because they were deemed unworthy of life by a sick, sick man.

If someone read this letter and had no clue of Hitler and WWII, they would think that Hitler was an unpopular and divisive leader who incited a lot of anger and hatred among the people but who was democratically voted out when people had enough of him.

To equate Trump with a

mass genocidal murderer, the likes of which the world has never known, is callous. There have been a lot of vicious murderous leaders in this world throughout history who have done the most depraved things to people and enslaved masses, with government sanctioned mass-murder, and still not many have murdered millions.

Almost half the U.S. population voted for Trump and still

support him today. To even insinuate that these people endorse a man who can be equated to Hitler is horrible beyond comprehension and words. It is so dumbing down Hitler that it’s mind-boggling. Are people going to just start calling anyone with unpopular policies Hitler?

To throw around the comparison to Hitler so lightly, flippantly and irresponsibly

demands a trip to Yad Vashem in Israel or the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., to get an idea of what Hitler did and even then the horrors are almost inconceivable.

Hate the guy, but don’t sugarcoat Hitler by equating him to Trump.

Port mainstay Frank’s Pizzeria to be missed

F

rank’s Pizzeria is gone.

Frank’s, at almost the corner of Main Street and Port Washington Boulevard, is gone.

My son drove past the little restaurant this past Saturday, New Year’s Day, and he told me that Frank’s was gone, out of business. That news came to me as something of a mild shock and I wasn’t even a steady customer of Frank’s.

Why the shock? Because to me, Frank’s was something of an anchor, something to hold

onto, in Port Washington.

In December of 1967, my wife and I were going through the process of closing on our new home in Port Washington.

Even though we hadn’t actually moved into Port yet, from Forest Hills, Queens, the Port school district allowed our two very young children to attend school here in Port.

My wife and I were very happy about that, but until we actually moved into our new home, my wife had to drive our kids to and from Port school ev-

ery day. I was working in Manhattan and couldn’t help her with the driving.

Our two kids went to the John J. Daly Elementary School, from 8:00 in the morning until 3:00, every afternoon.

My wife, who was learning how to move about in Port Washington, said that she would stop at Frank’s Pizzeria, almost every day after school was over, to get herself and the kids slices of Frank’s pizza and drinks.

She said that the pizza was very good, was very reasonably

priced and that the atmosphere at Frank’s was very conducive for her and the kids to relax in, before the long drive back to Forest Hills.

After we moved into Port, my wife introduced me to Frank’s and I had to agree with her evaluation of the place. Of course, Frank, himself, was running the restaurant then and he was the chief chef and pizza pie maker in the place.

As I recall, his wife, a very cheerful and very likable woman, waited on the few tables and helped him in the restaurant.

In 1967/1968, Frank’s Pizzeria was the only Pizzeria/ Italian restaurant in Port Washington, except for a larger Italian restaurant/pizzeria called Andy’s, I believe, which was located way up Manorhaven Boulevard, in the Village of Manorhaven.

Andy’s was good, but it was not nearly as convenient or as friendly, as Frank’s.

I guess that if you’re not as old a resident of Port as I am and if you didn’t experience what my family and I experienced moving into town, then the closing down, for all time, of Frank’s Pizzeria, means little or nothing to you.

But, I know that after Frank and his wife retired and moved off to Florida, that their daughter, Linda, bravely kept the little restaurant thriving for many years after that and that Frank’s had very many loyal customers to its end.

Those very loyal customers and I have just lost something very dear to hold onto, that cannot be replaced.

A golden age in public education, indeed.

I remember a legendary Baker School 5th grade teacher, Marion Greif, who actually was written up in the New York Times for her challenging projects and techniques which produced an unbelievable number of Ivy league students, many who became doctors. She quit after the scripted curriculums, teach-to-the-test mandates came down from on high, pushing out time for these engaging projects. Her famous “chicken skeleton” had already become optional because of panicked parents who didn’t appreciate the value of stick-toit-tiveness the projects fostered.

Great Neck offers so many programs that let students find themselves, tap into skills, potentials and interests they never knew they had, but then uses throughout their life – Science Research under Alan Schorn, Model Congress, Model UN, business, robotics, every incarnation of music, theater, art you can imagine. All of these are made possible by the Board of Education through budgets and policy, so long led by Barbara Berkowitz (who expressed her appreciation to Ames during the memorial), and the superintendents they installed, like William Shine and Teresa Prendergast.

They have championed the Great Neck Public School District’s mission: “to provide an innovative and collaborative educational environment that supports academic excellence and the social and emotional growth of all students so that they may become life-long learners and

compassionate, productive members of a diverse, global society.”

What struck me, listening to this outpouring of love and gratitude for this teacher, was how public education has been beaten down and undermined and how hard it is to maintain this mission – between the prison-like security conditions after more than two generations of school shootings, to the Bush-era testing mandates that punished even schools performing at the highest level (because they couldn’t show annual improvement) and forced them to teach to a test, to the antitax fetish and Cuomo tax cap that forced districts to cannibalize their programming and cut out the very things – music, art, theater, clubs — that enable young people to flower and find and fulfill their own potential and literally love school; to the sick obsession with sexual harassment (hugging is now out of the question); and now the utterly fascistic campaign to control “truth” and threaten teachers who dare raise any controversy or get students to think. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just issued an edict that teachers could be sued by any parent “upset” by what a teacher says.

Now, even Great Neck’s Board of Education – so long a model for collaborative process, from the building-level Shared Decision Making to student board members and extraordinary success of its students – may well be targeted by those whose sole interest is to destroy anything “public,” “collaborative” and the ability of government to govern.

We cannot take for granted what and who make our schools and our children so successful, our community and society better.

25% of village budgets missing Continued from Page 1 When requested, the administrative staff of Williston Park, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington and Saddle Rock emailed a full budget the same day as the request, within a few hours.

Great Neck Estates village Administrator Kathleen Santelli said the budgets are posted online before their adoption for the public to view. While no longer posted, they are always available upon request, she said.

“The budget was posted during the tentative & adopted process and we do generally attach the monthly financials as well as other department reports with the Board agenda and are always available upon request,” Santelli said in an email.

North Hills sent its 2021-22 budget after 24 hours and 5 min-

utes. North Hills village Administrator Marianne Lobaccaro expressed similar sentiments to Santelli in a statement to Blank Slate Media.

“The Village Complies with all legal requirements regarding website postings,” Lobaccaro said. “Copies of the Village Budget are available at Village Hall and by request.

For this year’s budget cycle, the Village will be required to post the tentative budget in advance of the budget hearing.”

Great Neck Plaza village Administrator Pat O’Byrne said the village is currently in the process of updating its website and plans for the full budget and a brief summary of it to be posted online. O’Byrne said the village’s 2022-23 budget, which will be discussed during future meetings, is also online for residents to access on the village website.

Officials from other villages whose full 2021-22 budgets were not posted online did not respond to requests for comment.

Kristin O’Neill, the associate director for the state’s Committee on Open Government, said New York’s Freedom of Information Law does not require villages or local municipalities to have their budgets online.

“There’s nothing in the Freedom of Information Law or the Open Meetings Law that requires that a budget be posted on an agency website,” O’Neil said in a phone interview. “The Freedom of Information Law is this statute in New York that governs access to records. That’s what making a request for records is and that’s why you have the right to request those records.”

Both the Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County have their budgets posted online for the public to view.

Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey touted the importance of government transparency and showing residents what their taxes are being used on whenever they desire to look.

“These documents serve as blueprints for the town government, showing how resident tax dollars are being utilized and detailing the important priorities and initiatives that we’re going to be voting on,” Lurvey said in a phone interview.

“It’s important that the public be able to access it without putting any hurdles in the way and having them ask for it.”

“We’ve been uploading them online for the last 10 years at least,” said Michael Koblenz, mayor of East Hills.

Representatives from the Village of Bellerose and Roslyn Estates shared a similar sentiment, saying that the budgets are published when they are passed at the Board of Trustees meeting.

Ease of access among websites differed for villages that had their budgets available. There was a mix of budgets that were available on the homepage and labeled as such, and there were budgets that were under different tabs/pages relating to “taxes” or “documents.”

Mineola announces partnership with Northwell To best support the mental health needs of its students, Mineola Public Schools has joined the Northwell Health Mental Partnership. This new initiative between Cohen Children’s Medical Center and the district provides a team that

works closely with school counselors, psychologists and social workers to help determine the needs of district students.

Through the partnership, access to a behavioral health center, located in Mineola, is available for students in

Herricks student cited for volunteering Searingtown School student Sophia Chen has been awarded the 2021 President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition and appreciation of her commitment to volunteer service.

She has completed more than 75 hours by helping kindergarten students with their math and English language arts activities, as well as volunteering at events during summer camp and after school at the Long Island Tutoring Academy School. She is described as a kind, intelligent and loving student. In addition, Sophia and her brother Wilson joined a team of volunteers over winter break to pick up scattered trash around major roads in Herricks.

Sophia received her certificate and gold medal in December.
