Trustee Janine Sartori also elected after finishing Walsh’s term on board BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira was elected mayor of Mineola in Tuesday’s village elections. He will succeed Scott Strauss, who served the village for 11 years and did not seek re-election. Pereira was first elected to the board in 2008 and became deputy mayor in 2011. He has lived in Mineola for over four decades. Voting numbers were unavailable on Wednesday morning, but election results were to be certified Wednesday night at the Mineola Board of Trustees meeting. Also elected were Trustee Janine Sartori, who finished out current North Hempstead Councilman Dennis Walsh’s term, and Jeffrey Clark, who takes the seat vacated by Trustee George Durham. Durham did not seek re-election after 11 years on the board. All three officials ran on the New Line Party slate and were uncontested. Pereira was to be sworn
in for a four-year term on Wednesday, with Sartori and Clark to be sworn in for two-year terms as well. Scott Fairgrieve, the village justice, also ran unopposed and was re-elected. When Pereira announced his campaign, his party released a statement saying he has kept a focus on finances and infrastructure in the village. “Paul has consistently fought to keep our Mineola way of life,” the New Line Party said. “He worked to lower debt and hold the line on taxes. He has voted time and time again to invest in infrastructure such as roads, sewers and clean water. Paul is the natural choice to succeed Mayor Scott Strauss and has his full backing.” With Pereira’s election, his current seat becomes vacant. Someone will be appointed to fill his seat and finish his current term, similar to what Trustee Sartori did for Walsh’s term. Continued on Page 49
