Lampasona unopposed for re-election Teacher, trustee initially joined Mineola school board in 2016 BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Mineola Board of Education Trustee Cheryl Lampasona is running unopposed for re-election. Lampasona joined the board in 2016. She ran unopposed for Vice President Patricia Navarra’s seat after Navarra stepped down. If Lampasona is re-elected to a three-year term on May 17, it will be her third term on the board. Previously, she was co-president of the Hampton Street School PTA. She has worked as a full-time and part-time school teacher. Lampasona joined the board shortly after the movement of Mineola parents opting their children out of state tests aligned with Common Core educational standards. She announced her candidacy in February on Twitter, committing to continue her work for Mineola. “I am pleased to announce that I will be seeking re-election as your Board of Education Trustee,” Lampasona said. “It has been a privilege to serve the Mineola school community over the past 6 years. I look forward to continuing the vision of this exemplary district, an honor I take tremendous pride in. I will continue to accept all the challenges and extraordinary responsibilities that the trustee posi-
tion encompasses. I look forward to continuing to work for the children, parents and taxpayers of our wonderful community.” In 2019, Lampasona said her favorite accomplishment at the time was voting for and passing full-day pre-kindergarten, which then made Mineola the only district in Nassau County to offer a free full-day program. For her most recent three-year term, she said that focuses would be on maintaining and growing school programs and preserving school facilities while staying within the tax cap. In December, the Mineola school district added the former Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union building on Jericho Turnpike, adjacent to Mineola High School. The $4.25 million purchase will expand the high school’s campus with additional programs. Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Jackson Avenue School and the Meadow Drive School. In the East Williston school district, two spots on the Board of Education are open as the terms of David Keefe and Tasneem Meghji are expiring. Both terms end on June 30. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 17 and voting will take place at the Wheatley School in Old Westbury. Continued on Page 34
