Memorial Day observances to return

Ceremonies, parades planned for Mineola, W.P. NHP and E.W.

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Villages in the Williston and New Hyde Park areas are gearing up for Memorial Day parades, some for the first time since COVID-19.

The American Legion Post 144 in Williston Park will be having its annual Memorial Day service and parade on May 30.

The parade will begin following the Post’s everlasting ceremony and start southbound on Willis Avenue to Syracuse Street and turn onto Broad Street, Hillside Avenue, Park Avenue, Center Street and turning onto Willis Avenue before finishing in front of Village Hall.

There, a short ceremony will take place recognizing the servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives for the country, according to village officials.

In East Williston, a parade will form at 11 a.m on Downing Street at the rear of North Side School. A ceremony will be held on the village green at noon which involves placing wreaths at War Memorial, among other things.

In Mineola, the parade returns after two years with the help of local organizations to share responsibilities.

The Mineola Fire Department and Boy Scouts Troop 45 will be conduct-

ing the parade instead of the Mineola VFW Post 1305, which recently closed down due to lack of membership, and the American Legion.

For the past two years, the annual parade has been on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, an observance was held at Memorial Park.

“The fire department and Boy Scouts are making sure this tradition continues,” Mineola Trustee Jeffrey Clark said at a recent board meeting.

“I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the parade and if you are part of an organization please consider bringing them down, the larger the better.”

The Memorial Day Parade will step off at 11:00 am from Wilson Park and proceed along Westbury Avenue, Roslyn Road, Jericho Turnpike, and Marcellus Road, ending at the Mineola Library.

A memorial ceremony will follow at the Mineola Memorial Park Amphitheater.

In New Hyde Park, ceremonies will be held at Village Hall and Memorial Park along with a parade.

“Let’s proudly wave the American flag to remember and honor the sacrifices of ur fallen heroes who died in service to our country,” a release on the village’s website said.

BY M I C H A E L L E W I S After a three-year wait, the lacrosse game that means so much to both Chaminade and Manhasset High School finally returned to its rightful place on the season calendar.

The “Regs Rock” game May 12 once again brought two communities together to celebrate the life of Sgt. Jimmy Regan, a Manhasset kid who grew up to be a lacrosse star at Chaminade and later at Duke University, joined the Army and was killed in action in February 2007.

The “Regs Rock” game has been played annually at Manhasset since 2008, but due to COVID-19 it hadn’t been contested since 2019.

In last week’s game Chaminade dominated from the opening face-off and ran away with a 17-8 win.

Each year the game raises money for the Army Lead the Way Fund, a non-profit that provides financial support for severely injured or deceased soldiers.

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Two incumbent trustees on the East Williston School District’s Board of Education, David Keefe and Tasneem Meghji, were re-elected on Tuesday.

The district’s adopted $66.3 million budget for the 2022-23 school year also passed 710-265. The budget is an increase of more than 3.5% over last year. The tax levy also increased, rising to $58.1 million, or .68%, from the 2021-22 adopted budget.

A proposition to authorize the district to undertake projects from the 2019 Capitol Project Reserve Fund was also passed, 817-154. The projects will include North Side roof replacement, HVAC repair and installation along with renovations to the Wheatley auditorium and science

lab.

Keefe and Meghji received 590 and 585 votes, respectively. Meghji’s opponent, Andrea Golub, got 408 votes, while Keefe’s opposition, Ellie Konstantatos, received 401 votes.

Before being elected to the board in 2020, Meghji served on the Educational Advisory Committee for the East Williston schools, which advises the board and the district on educational initiatives. Meghji was elected to fill the seat on the board left vacant by Alan Littman.

Meghji said in a phone interview that her experience developing the budget for the past two years and helping guide the district through the coronavirus pandemic showed why she would continue to be a valuable asset on the board.

“I’ve always volunteered and running for school board was just a

natural progression of my passion for volunteering in the school district,” Meghji said. “I feel like continuing to serve, I will be much more valuable than having a new trustee who has to learn how school districts work.”

Meghji touted the fact that roughly 3% of the increase to the district’s $66.3 million budget would be covered by their capital reserve fund rather than asking taxpayers to fund it all, resulting in an overall increase.

Keefe was elected to his fourth term on the board in 2019 in an uncontested race. Keefe has served on the board since 2010 and never run in a contested race until this year.

He has served on multiple boards for decades, including state and local committees. Keefe taught in Hempstead for about 40 years and was the union president in Hempstead for 30 years.

Manhasset coach Keith Cromwell echoed those sentiments.

“There’s so much love for lacrosse and for Jimmy at this game every year, and we’re so happy we got to finally play one of these games again,” Cromwell said. “Jimmy’s family has been so wonderful in explaining to the kids on both sides what Jimmy was all about, and the kids really get it.”

If there was one player on the field last week who “got it” more than anyone, it was Chaminade senior Charles Balsamo. The attacker was voted by his teammates the honor of wearing Regan’s No. 19 before the season started, and Balsamo also hails from Manhasset.

Additionally, his intelligence and extraordinary skill on the field has resulted in a scholarship to play lacrosse at Duke next year, just like Jimmy did.

Mineola OKs budget, capital reserve Trustee Cheryl Lampasona re-elected in unopposed race as voters approved $110M in spending

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Mineola Union Free School District residents approved a $110 million budget, re-elected Trustee Cheryl Lampasona to another three-year term and established a capital reserve fund with no tax impact on Tuesday night.

Residents apprvoed the budget with 80% of 855 total votes while the capital reserve fund establishment was also passed with 80% of 810 total votes.

The new budget is $110,006,200 for the 2022– 2023 fiscal year with a zero percent tax levy increase for the second year in a row. Between the current budget and the new one, there is a 1.62% decrease in spending.

Curricular enhancements that come with the budget include the continuing expansion of social and emotional learning, launching the Synergy program and supporting the renewal of K-6 math expressions programs, among others.

Part of the facility and equipment upgrades involve

brick pointing, ceiling replacement, flooring and other district repairs along with new bleachers at Hampton Field, new furniture for Synergy and technology infrastructure upgrades.

Included is a $9 million transfer to capital for districtwide purposes, including work on the middle-school gymnasium, Hampton Street student bathrooms, Willis Avenue upgrades and security camera upgrade, among others.

As for the capital reserve fund, the district previously said in a community release they are “seeking permission to establish a capital reserve fund to pay for future facilities needs.” The goal is to fund the reserve for a maximum of $20 million over the span of 12 years.

Lampasona, who’s been on the Board of Education for six years, was re-elected with 616 votes in an uncontested race.

She is a New York public school teacher in Queens and in a statement thanked her supporters.

“I want to thank the Mineola school community for supporting the budget and re-electing me to continue serving you as

your board trustee,” Lampasona said in a statement Wednesday morning. “I am deeply humbled by your support, and I am excited to serve the Mineola school community for another three years.”

Before her time on the board, Lampasona was on the Hampton Street School PTA where she served as president until her initial run for school board in 2016. She ran unopposed for Vice President Patricia Navarra’s seat after she stepped down.

Full-day pre-K and a dual language program up to ninth grade are a few of the accomplishments Lampasona said the district has implemented in recent years. She also has two children in the district and expects to be a trustee on the board after they graduate from high school.

“I’m on the board for everyone’s children, not just my own,” Lampasona has said. “I really do love this district and all the wonderful things we do and the accolades we get. I love seeing it come to fruition, it really is a wonderful thing.”

3 Nassau hospitals earn ‘A’ safety grade

BY ST E V E N K E E H N E R Four Long Island hospitals, three in Nassau, received an ‘A’ rating in The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grades, which were released on May 10.

Flower Hill’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, Port Jefferson’s Mather Hospital, Manhasset’s North Shore University Hospital and Mineola’s NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island all scored an “A,” the highest possible mark.

The ratings are published biannually. They are based on information supplied to the government Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and its own poll.

In particular, they focus on a hospital’s ability to protect patients from avoidable errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

Dr. Peter Silver, the chief quality officer of Northwell Health, expressed delight in the grade in a statement to Blank Slate Media.

“All of our Northwell Hospitals are committed to patient safety in order to provide the best patient experience possible,” Silver said. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce working to improve the quality of care for our patients each and every day.”

Nearly 3,000 hospitals in the United States were graded.

Of these, 21 Long Island hospitals submitted data. Along with the four hospitals that scored an “A,” five hospitals obtained a “B,” nine received a “C” and three got a “D.” When the ratings are broken down by county, the hospital split is nearly even, with 11 Nassau and 10 Suffolk hospitals contributing data.

While Nassau hospitals got three of the four “A” ratings, when the “B” and “C” grades were combined, Suffolk hospitals outweighed Nassau hospitals eight to six. Nassau received two “D” ratings to Suffolk’s one.

Martins defends role in redistricting, Senate bid

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z The former chairman of the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission said he was “shocked but not surprised” to see Jack Martins, the former vice chairman for the Republican redistricting committee announce his candidacy for state senate after trying to draw the district’s new lines.

David Imamura, a Democrat, wrote an opinion piece to City & State New York, saying that the state’s redistricting process has “failed spectacularly” for a variety of reasons, including the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission not being able to agree on lines.

“With five Democrats and five Republicans who had very different views on how districts should be drawn and, in particular, how various communities of interest should be respected in accordance with the constitutional criteria, it became clear that the commission would not reach an agreement,” Imamura wrote.

The Democrat said Martins, the former mayor of Mineola and state senator, was “clearly interested” in running for office following his previous political endeavors.

Imamura claimed Martins would travel back to Mineola during the “marathon negotiating sessions” and no progress on drawing new lines was made.

“Two months after the commission reached a stalemate, I was shocked but not surprised to see Jack announce his candidacy for New York State Senate in a district that he himself had been trying to draw mere weeks before,” Imamura said.

Martins, while on the commission, said he advocated that Nassau County not “have Assembly or Senate districts straddle or break the Queens-Nassau line and to keep minority communities whole

to the Chairman’s failure to lead and promote consensus building.”

Martins was endorsed by the Nassau County Republican Party in March after he launched his campaign to run against incumbent state Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills) to represent the 7th state Senate District.

Martins, an Old Westbury resident who previously represented the 7th District from 2011-2016, started off his introductory speech at the GOP’s Westbury headquarters by saying, “It’s great to be back” and addressed the questions he has received from others asking why he is choosing to run again.

“When I left the Senate six years ago, we had compromise, we had balance, the suburbs had a voice,” Martins said. “Nassau County had a voice because there were people who were willing to fight for Nassau County families and make sure the… quality of life we want for ourselves, for our families, is alive and well.”

Few changes to Congressional District 4 Special master’s plan for New York results in major revisions elsewhere including CD3

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Newly drawn congressional maps were unveiled Monday, with some experts believing the redistricted lines could give an advantage to Republican candidates.

The maps were submitted by a court-appointed “special master” and have been viewed as more neutral compared to ones that were rejected by a state appeals court several weeks ago.

Dave Wasserman, a national elections analyst with the Cook Political Report, told The New York Times that “Democrats could lose a lot of ground this fall and that could drive a stake through their hopes of keeping the House majority.”

Earlier this year, Patrick McAllister, a state Supreme Court judge, rejected the maps saying they were “unconstitutionally drawn with political bias.”

Currently, the district, held by U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), who is now running for the Democratic nomination for governor, includes Manhasset, Roslyn, Port Washington, Great Neck and Floral Park, among other areas, and stretches from Whitestone, Queens, to Kings Park in Suffolk County.

No major changes were featured in the 4th Congressional District, which includes central and southern Nassau County, including Floral Park, Garden City, Hempstead, Mineola, Carle Place, New Hyde Park and Westbury.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation that required county redistricting to follow guidelines that aim to promote fairness and not favor parties.

The legislation states that district lines must consist of contiguous territory, be drawn nearly equal in population as is practicable, promote orderly and efficient election administration and not be drawn with the intent to deter certain minority groups from participating in elections.

The Williston Park Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing June 13 about the adoption of a local law that puts a six-month moratorium on the sale of tobacco products, liquid nicotine and electronic cigarettes within the village.

The law takes aim at temporarily prohibiting the opening of smoke shops in the village, Mayor Paul Ehrbar said Monday night.

“We’ve had them open up and we really can’t stop them; they’re permitted by law,” Ehrbar said. “It’s a difficult thing, but on June 13 we’ll have a hearing about it and we can look into setting some kind of guidelines on where they can go.”

Ehrbar told the public that by law moratoriums are six months but in certain cases can be extended. The mayor said the smoke shops are legal businesses regulated by different entities aside from the local level and that

the village will be evaluating if there are ways to put restrictions on where they go and if there’s a way to control it.

In other village news, Ehrbar said he hopes residents received the latest copy of the Village Green, which includes important information on what events are taking place in Williston Park during the summer.

“We have concerts run by recreation, gazebo concerts for the seniors, the pool is opening,” Ehrbar said. “We have a lot going on.”

Deputy Mayor Kevin Rynne said an application to use the pool, which he called a gem of the village, was included in the Village Green. Residential rates for the season will be $360 for families, $305 for couples, $233 for individuals, $134 for seniors and $167 for nannies.

The pool will open daily June 18. The next meeting for the Williston Park Board of Trustees will be Monday, June 13.

Blakeman announces pact with Judea, Samaria Says agreement with areas occupied by Israel based on economic, cultural benefits

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced a cooperation and friendship agreement between the county and the communities of Judea and Samaria on Thursday.

The agreement between Nassau and the Israeli communities, Blakeman said, will be one also based on economic and cultural aspects. Officials said Plaestinian Authority and the international community do not recognize Samaria, an area within the Jewish homeland.

“Today I was proud to sign a friendship, economic and cultural exchange agreement with Judea and Samaria from Israel,” Blakeman said Thursday. “I look forward to a long and prosperous partnership between our two governments and people.”

Judea and Samaria, whose names go back to Biblical times, is now an Israeli-designated administrative territory that encompasses the Israelioccupied West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem. Judea refers to all the regions south of Jerusalem while Samaria refers to the area north of Jerusalem.

Town board set to vote on controversial pick Democratic majority seeks to return Thomas Tiernan as highway superintendent

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y The North Hempstead Town Board will be voting Thursday night on the proposed appointment of Thomas Tiernan as highway superintendent, six years after he resigned from the same position following probes into his overtime compensation.

It is currently unclear the compensation that Tiernan would be receiving if appointed.

Supervisor Jennifer DeSena called on her Democrat colleagues, specifically Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey, to withdraw the resolution slated to be voted on later this week.

Lurvey said Tiernan was “phenomenal” during his first stint in the position.

“The Highway Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 300 miles of town roads, including pavement and drainage, tree planting, street sweeping, and snow removal. Mr. Tiernan did a phenomenal job as town highway superintendent, possessing nearly four decades of experience with the town,” Lurvey previously said in a statement to Blank Slate Media. “He is someone who knows North Hempstead and cares deeply about our residents.”

Tiernan had worked with the town since 1980 and was named highway chief in 2000. In 2016, Tiernan resigned following reports in Newsday that he had amassed over $130,000 in overtime between 2011 and 2016, according to Newsday payroll data, and an internal investigation by the town.

Following Tiernan’s resignation, Joe Geraci, the the deputy commissioner of public works at the time, served as the town’s acting highway superintendent from 2016 to September 2018, when the town officially began its search for a full-time superintendent.

After Geraci, Kevin Cronin, the

then administrative assistant to Supervisor Judi Bosworth, served as the acting commissioner. His salary in 2019 was $117,507, according to town payroll filings.

Richard Baker became the first permanent highway chief in 2019 since Tiernan, just over two years after Tiernan resigned. Baker resigned in July 2019, just four months after he had gotten the job.

At the time of his resignation, Baker was earning $140,000 according to Newsday.

Harry Weed, the town’s acting highway superintendent, has been in his role since 2021. A resolution to appoint him on a permanent basis was tabled in January to determine whether he lives in the town, as required. Weed’s annual salary is $150,828, according to Newsday.

If Tiernan is approved, it would represent another loss for DeSena, who has battled with the Town Board’s Democratic majority on a number of issues since taking office in January.

DeSena has failed to appoint members to the town’s board of ethics for several months following abstentions from the Democrats.

From 2019 to 2021, Town Board members voted to abstain one time.

So far, in six meetings in 2022, the

majority councilmembers have cast their vote as abstain 60 times.

DeSena held a press conference with reporters on the steps of Village Hall Monday, May 9 where she demanded the resolution’s rescinding.

DeSena said at the time of his resignation, Tiernan was the town’s highest-paid employee and was the only highway superintendent on Long Island to collect overtime pay due to both his union contract and the position being made into a civil service job in 2011.

Tiernan was paid $40,000 in overtime in 2015, $30,000 in 2014 and $21,000 in 2013, according to Newsday payroll data.

During the same time period, DeSena said, no other person in his position on Long Island earned overtime compensation, including Hempstead, which the supervisor said is responsible for nearly five times as much roadway.

DeSena also noted that Tiernan was the subject of an internal investigation in 2015 through the town attorney’s office following complaints from a vendor that Tiernan verbally abused a vendor, a claim the supervisor said was backed by “credible evidence.”

Our thoughts are with Amelia’s loved ones as we prosecute this case.”

Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Nassau County Police Department previously said Hines stalked Laguerre after the two broke up last year following approximately two years of dating. Fitzpatrick said Hines allegedly engaged in a “heated argument” with Laguerre at her work before the shooting.

Democratic state officials called on Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to not discontinue a program that provides eligible households with $375 stimulus checks on Wednesday.

Blakeman, last month, cited “extremely low participation” as to why he plans to discontinue the Household Assistance Program on May 15.

Officials from the county comptroller’s office said more than 70,000 out of the eligible 400,000 households throughout Nassau County filed for the one-time direct payment.

A letter was sent to Blakeman urging him to better promote the program rather than simply ending it.

The letter was signed by Democratic state Sens. Anna Kaplan, John Brooks, Jim Gaughran and Kevin Thoms along with state Assemblymembers Gina Sillitti, Chuck Lavine, Michaelle Solages and Judy Griffin.

“With so many families still struggling, the county must keep this vital program going, and do its job to get the word out to eligible families,” the letter said. “Anything less would be a dereliction of duty to the people we represent.”

The funds for the program came from $100 million out of the $193 million in American Rescue Plan Act monies allocated to the county. The program was approved 18-1 in the Republicancontrolled Legislature last fall.

North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena’s office said that no new signs in the town will have names added to them, upholding a campaign promise she made before being elected.

While at a Sept. 4, 2021 event, DeSena made a Facebook post that was uploaded to her page saying in part “as supervisor I would include everyone with ideas for improving town services, regardless of party affiliation. I would not put my name on signs and plaques and would welcome term limits. Trust me and Vote Row B for supervisor.”

Brian Devine, director of communications for the supervisor’s office, said the additions were made before DeSena took office and no additional tax money would be spent on the signs.

“Upon Supervisor DeSena taking office, we found that departments had already updated town sign names and we learned that many existing signs were created with a replaceable spot for the supervisor’s name. Going forward, options included leaving current signs around town unfinished and sloppy or replacing them entirely. To prevent any new taxpayer money from being spent on signs, the supervisor has asked departments to refrain from adding names on new signs.”

According to the town website, there are over 40 parks and facilities under North Hempstead’s jurisdiction.

The theme for this year’s National Public Works Week is “Ready and Resilient,” which highlights the ability of Public Works personnel to be ready at a moment’s notice to react as first responders to emergency incidents.

lage of Mineola running by maintaining an infrastructure of services in emergency management, transportation, streets, water, wastewater, landscaping, stormwater, sustainability services, and engineering. These services help make the Village of Mineola a great place to live and work.

Mayor Paul A. Pereira stated, “As a community, we are mindful of the efforts these public works employees make every day, and this week is about letting them know how much they are appreciated.”

It is a routine that has worked to perfection, so there’s no sense in changing it now.

Before every Manhasset High School girls lacrosse game, senior Alexis Morton does the same thing.

She joins her teammates in the locker room for a dance party about an hour before the game, as Pitbull or some other equally high-decibel artist is blared.

Then everyone sits down and braids their hair.

Except for Morton.

While her teammates get their follicles set for battle, Morton wanders out to the field for her pre-warmup warmup.

Alone with her thoughts, a stick and a ball, she goes through moves she might use in that day’s game or relives misses from past games.

“I like to get in the zone and get all my missed shots out of my system and think about how this team defended me last time, or how I can attack better, or I practice my free positions (the lacrosse equivalent of a soccer free kick). I just want to do everything I can to make sure I’m ready, so when the game starts, it’s a no-brainer.

I know exactly what I want to do.”

After her private warmup, Morton goes back into the locker room and gets ready to come out for the Indians’ regular team warmup.

Is she ever teased by her teammates for not partaking in the hair-braiding?

“Nah,” she laughed. “They know me and know I do my own thing that works.”

You can’t argue with Morton’s way, not after the career she’s had. A four-year varsity performer for the powerful Manhasset squad, the bubbly, 18-year-old, who radiates energy just walking around campus, has become a dominant offensive force in 2022.

Through games of May 12 she had poured in 32 goals and 27 assists for Manhasset, as it looks to win its fourth straight Nassau title and its first state crown since 2018.

This follows a 2021 campaign that saw Morton pump in 44 goals and 19 assists to lead her squad to the Long Island championship, where it lost by a goal to Bayport-Blue Point.

All that success has made Division I college programs come after Morton, and the University of Richmond won her services beginning next fall.

An unfortunate town Democratic tradition?

T

he plan by the four Democratic North Hempstead council members to appoint a controversytainted pick as the new town highway superintendent over the objections of Supervisor Jennifer DeSena is instructive in several ways.

The first lesson is that the four Democrats, who now comprise the majority of the seven-member town board, have the legal right to select Thomas Tiernan six years after he resigned as highway superintendent following probes into his overtime compensation.

Under state law, town supervisors are not like governors, county executives or mayors with executive power to do things like appoint department heads.

Surprising as this might seem to voters, the power of the executive falls to the majority of the town board of which the supervisor is just one member.

A town supervisor like DeSena is, according to the Local Government Handbook, more of an administrator overseeing the departments but not necessarily choosing its leaders.

Sounds like a bad way to run a government? Blame the State of New York.

Laura Gillen, who became the first Democratic Hempstead supervisor in 112 years in 2017, urged Democrats in North Hempstead in January to “eschew the temptation to use this power for strictly political purposes” as the Hempstead Republican-controlled town board did to her.

So much for listening to Gillen.

North Hempstead Democrats appear to be following the playbook of Hempstead Republicans and standing in the way of DeSena at every turn.

Which unfortunately worked out well for Hempstead Republicans if not Hempstead residents. Gillen, who is now running for the Democratic nomination for Congress, was defeated after one term in office.

Blocked were such obvious and long-needed proposals such as computerizing records and not relying on electric typewriters.

Thus far, North Hempstead Democrats have stood in the way of modest reforms of the long-troubled town Building Department and, appointments to

the town ethics board.

This leads to the expected appointment of Tiernan and the town’s long history of unaccountability and nepotism.

Tiernan, who had worked with the town from 1980, was named highway chief in 2000.

In 2016, he resigned following reports in Newsday that he had amassed over $130,000 in overtime between 2011 and 2016 and an internal investigation by the town.

At the time of his resignation, Tiernan was the town’s highest-paid employee and the only highway superintendent on Long Island to collect overtime pay.

This was also a family affair.

When Tiernan resigned, several members of his family were on the town’s payroll in a pattern of nepotism and questionable hiring by the town.

His sister, Helen McCann, is a former longtime employee of the town.

In 2018, she was sentenced to a conditional discharge for embezzling more than $98,000 from the Solid Waste Management Authority from 2014 to 2016, prosecutors said.

She was ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution to the town, $48,330 to an insurance company for a claim made by the town and pleaded guilty to second-degree corrupting the government charges.

Tiernan’s brother, John, was a 27year town employee who was a highway construction supervisor. He was asked to resign in 2018 after the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board found he “knowingly made material misrepresentations” to get benefits, according to Newsday.

His wife, Jill Guiney, is a former town deputy commissioner of public works.

In 2017, a year after Tiernan’s resignation, the town board under Supervisor Judi Bosworth passed anti-nepotism laws. The laws prohibited relatives of elected town officials from being employed by the town, a town employee from participating in any personnel decision about a relative and town employees from supervising a relative.

return of Tiernan, Robert Troiano, ran afoul of town ethics requirements a year later when he failed to list federal tax liens on at least one financial disclosure statement when he served as a Bosworth deputy.

Blank Slate Media had earlier reported that in the 2014 financial statement Troiano failed to list $81,533 in federal income tax liens and a $749,264 lien on a house he owned facing foreclosure.

Then town spokesperson Carol Trottere said the issues raised regarding Troiano’s undisclosed tax liens suggested that the town’s process needed to be tightened.

Troiano had been tapped at the time by then Nassau County Executive Laura Curran to serve as the county’s acting commissioner for traffic and parking violations.

Troiano stepped down when his tax issues came to light, although he maintained he left for other reasons.

Only a year earlier, the town announced it had strengthened its ethics codes following disclosures showing that Gerard Terry, the former head of the North Hempstead Democratic Committee who held two jobs in the town, had racked up nearly $1 million in unpaid state and federal taxes between 2000 and 2017.

Terry later pleaded guilty to tax fraud and served time in prison. Terry

had been earning at least $200,000 annually, mostly from six different taxpayer-funded jobs.

Jonathan P. Fielding, a Town of North Hempstead zoning official, helped Terry create a company that Terry allegedly used as a front to hide income from the Internal Revenue Service, court documents show.

The town announced he no longer worked there after town officials were asked about his role with Terry.

And at the time Terry’s wife, Concetta, also worked for North Hempstead as deputy town clerk, a position that paid $80,000 in 2015.

Is it possible that Terry and his wife were the most qualified people for each job?

Is it possible that Tiernan and his family members were the most qualified person for each job they held?

Is it possible that Tiernan is now the most qualified person for the job of town highway superintendent?

DeSena said that since she took office this year as a Republican,there has been little talk, if any, of appointing a new highway chief.

Harry Weed, the town’s acting highway superintendent, has been in his role since 2021. A resolution to appoint him on a permanent basis was tabled in January to determine whether he lives in the town, as required.

Upon taking office, DeSena said the town had vacancies for both comptroller and chief deputy comptroller. She said a bipartisan search committee was set up as well asadvertising for the openings.

“No public job search took place here,” DeSena said. “No search committee was established for a new highway superintendent.”

Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey, in a statement to Blank Slate Media, strongly denied the supervisor’s claims while saying all seven town board members had the chance to discuss Tiernan’s appointment.

“The Highway Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 300 miles of town roads, including pavement and drainage, tree planting, street sweeping, and snow removal. Mr. Tiernan did a phenomenal job as town highway superintendent, possessing nearly four decades of experience with the town,” Lurvey said. “He is someone who knows North Hempstead and cares deeply about our residents.”

Unanswered is how the town highway department functioned since Tiernan left his job in 2016 and whether there are any better qualified and less ethically compromised candidates.

This would not be the first time that town Democrats did not select the best candidate for a job. We get a strong feeling it won’t be the last.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget giveaways

W

hen Kathy Hochul was sworn in as governor in August 2021, she told New Yorkers that she would govern differently than Cuomo.

And so she has….

Unlike Cuomo, who fought tooth and nail with state legislators, Hochul has rolled over to their demands in order to get $600 million for the new Buffalo Bills stadium.

To secure that funding, she resurrected—what Cuomo had buried—pork spending for legislators known as “members items.”

On top of that, Hochul has kept alive Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development programs that replaced “members items” and served as Cuomo’s personal pork barrel spending for local projects that have often been dubious in nature or were rewards to supporters in the form of capital grants or tax credits.

Ed McMahon, of The Empire Center for Public Policy, has noted that the more than $12 billion committed to RED projects in recent years “is in classic terms almost Marxist. This is the state owning the means of production. It’s corporate welfare on steroids.”

Many corporations that received grants failed or the payback promised never materialized. Cuomo’s “Buffalo Billion,” for example, which included the Solar City factory, employed only about 20% of the 3,000 jobs projected.

Another flop, the Central New York film, hub cost taxpayers $90 million.

And let’s not forget that several of Cuomo’s economic development shenanigans led to the conviction in 2018 of two of his political cronies, Joe Percoco and Alain Kaloyeros.

Which brings me back to Gov. Hochul. Did she learn anything from the Cuomo-era regional spending boondoggles?

Apparently not.

To get a budget passed, “…she managed to make everybody happy on something,” Kathryn S. Wilde, president of the Partnership for New York City, told The New York Times.

The deputy senate majority leader, Democrat Michael Gianaris (whom I’m guessing is getting his share of pork for his district), likened Hochul to Cuomo “in terms of looking out for corporate interests and her ideological positioning.”

The state comptroller’s analysis

GEORGE J. MARLIN On The Right of the 2022-2023 budget pointed out that “several new discretionary lump sum capital appropriations were added, with little detail regarding intended purposes…” In other words, political swag.

These appropriations include: • $800 million for “the New York State Regional Economic and Community Assistance Program”—also known as corporate welfare.

• $385 million for the Community

Resilience Sustainability and Technology Program to support “projects intended to improve the quality of life of the residents of the state … through investment in facilities which support arts, cultural, athletic, housing, childcare, education, parks and recreational … tourism, community development … and other civic activities.” These are pork grants that state legislators could dole out to 501(c) (3)s, and community groups in their home district.

• $350 million for the Long Island Investment Fund to support “manufacturing, agriculture, business parks, community anchor facilities … and main street revitalizations.”

This is more corporate welfare with few strings attached.

• $185 million for the Local Community Assistance Program to “support community development or redevelopment, revitalization, economic development, economic sustainability … and local infrastructure improvement or enhancement.” Even more corporate welfare.

Here’s a tiny sampling from a “members items” list compiled by Newsday’s Albany reporter Michael Gormley:

• $5 million for a Rochester soccer stadium.

• $108 million to redevelop the Bronx Kingsbridge Amory.

• $8 million for a parking garage in Rochester.

• $20 million for Syracuse University’s basketball team Carrier Dome.

• $8.5 million for a Syracuse “Landmark Theatre.”

• $1 million for Old Fort Niagara.

There are hundreds of millions of dollars of such pork barrel projects.

Blair Horner, the executive director of the N.Y. Public Interest Research Group, stated that these funds “are used to bolster the image of elected officials in an effort to curry favor with voters.”

“Big lump sums,” like the $350 million coming to Long Island, Blair added, “limit public accountability and have been abused in the past.”

Yes, several legislators have gone to jail for abusing these grants by taking care of friends, relatives and donors.

Giving away the store may help Hochul get over the finish line in November, but it will not help taxpayers who will be stuck paying the tab for Albany’s unsatiable spending appetite.

A ‘Good-Enough’ book review to help you

I

have just started reading a very interesting book, “The GoodEnough Life,” by Avram Alpert.

Alpert is a philosopher, both by trade and by inclination, and also currently a lecturer in Princeton University’s writing program. I heard him recently in an interview

by WNYC’s Allison Stewart and was immediately intrigued.

Alpert’s thesis is that our American obsession with being “the best,” or what he calls “the greatness worldview,” is a poison — and not only to our individual happiness, but to the health and well-being of the entire world.

“I used to aspire to greatness,” he begins, first as a young athlete and later as a writer. But “I have come to think that personal quests for greatness and, perhaps even more important the unequal social systems that fuel these quests, are at the heart of much that is wrong in our world.”

Even if we opt out of the quest for “best” for ourselves — we can’t all win the Olympics — we still talk about doing our “personal best” or “living our best life.” It’s all around us, says Alpert, and it’s doing us harm. We should strive instead to be “good enough.”

As soon as I heard “good enough,” I was all ears. I spent

much of my 20s arguing with my first therapist, who drove me CRAZY by insisting that “Good enough is good enough.”

“Of course, it isn’t,” I insisted back. “Nobody puts out a job listing, looking for a ‘good enough researcher,’ or a ‘pretty good factchecker.’ For that matter, would you hire a ‘mostly competent airplane pilot’? A ‘probably good-enough brain surgeon? Hardly.”

But my real problem was that for all of my life, up till then, I had been dedicated to chasing that elusive label of “Best.” Every report card I had to have not just A’s, but “straight A’s.” My father was the kind of parent who would ask, “What’s this B-plus doing here?” but to be honest, at some point, it became at least as much my obsession as his. It wasn’t enough — for me that I got into Yale ; I was then massively displeased with myself that the best I could manage there was a 3.5 GPA. Not bad, you might say. But I wasn’t happy.

I am very sorry that that first therapist of mine passed away before I could get back to her — before I had matured enough to say, “Oh, my God, you were so right.

Thank you for trying, with me. I finally get it.”

A Look on the Lighter Side What brought me around? My children, of course.

Not in the early years. Back then I still had some delusions that it was worth trying to be “perfect,” if only because my children were —

how did I ever produce such astonishingly gorgeous little creatures?

— and it would be unforgivable to fail them.

No, what brings you around is when they’re older and rolling their eyes at you, pointing out your every failing. “I am tired of telling you slobs to bring your plates back to the kitchen,” you rant.

“But Mom — didn’t you notice?

Yours is the only plate still on the table.”

And sure enough, that was true.

That was just the beginning — of learning that I drive badly and don’t know the right-of-way rules; I never leave my glasses twice in the same place; I forget people’s names (who doesn’t?). The list of my flaws is endless. And exhausting.

That’s when you realize that just being “good enough” isn’t a failure, it’s a VICTORY! My favorite moment of the original “Roseanne”

show was when her husband complained about something or other when he got home from work, and she snapped, “Are the kids still alive? Then I’ve done my job for the day.”

In “The Good-Enough Life,” Alpert reviews philosophies from Confucianism to Buddhism, from Marxism to Aristotle, taking lessons from each. I was especially startled by his reminder that even in the Bible, after each day of creation, God surveys God’s handiwork. “And (God) saw that it was… perfect?

No. Great? No. Excellent? No. It is none of these things. It was ‘good.’ ” So — if “good” is good enough for God, who are we to disagree?

I have to confess something to you: I haven’t finished reading this book. And yet even so, I am recommending it because as far as I have gotten (halfway), it is plenty “GoodEnough” to improve your day.

‘Don’t get weary! Keep the faith’ in bad times

P

ossibly only once in a generation does an individual like the late U.S. Congressman John Lewis come along. Lewis was someone, historian Jon Meacham observed, whose deep faith drove him to pursue justice, as compared to those whose professed faith is used only to amass power.

In reading Meacham’s book, “His Truth Is Marching On: John Lewis and the Power of Hope,” I couldn’t help but think about how sorely John Lewis is missed today.

Confronted as a child with the painful reality of living in Jim Crow America, Lewis recalled, “From my earliest memories I was fundamentally disturbed by the unbridled meanness of the world around me.”

Lewis put his life on the line, practicing nonviolent civil disobedience. He was tested repeatedly and remained steadfast, despite being arrested scores of times and sustaining threats to his life and near-fatal beat-

ings by violent extremists.

They failed to shut him down.

He committed his life to transforming the nation into what his mentor Martin Luther King, Jr. referred to as “a Beloved Community.”

Lewis described what that meant to him: “‘Beloved’ meaning not hateful, not violent, not uncaring, not unkind and ‘Community’ meaning not separated, not polarized, not locked in a struggle; the Beloved Community is an all-inclusive world society based on simple justice, the values, the dignity, and the work of every human being ” Lewis lost his fight with pancreatic cancer at age 80, on July 17, 2020.

Before his death he was well aware that our democracy was in peril. In 2016, days after Donald Trump was elected president, Lewis reflected, “This past week has made me feel like I’m living my life all over again – that we have to fight some of the same fights. To see some of the bigotry, the hate, I think there are forces that want

districts across the US; educational content on race, ethnicity and sexual identity has been censored; and, the US Supreme court just signaled that it planned to eradicate women’s reproductive rights.

I could go on.

Many of the spiritual descendants of those who targeted John Lewis in the 1950s and ‘60s went into hiding.

That is, until Donald Trump coaxed them out of the shadows, gave them tacit permission to go public and emboldened them with a sense of legitimacy.

In other words, the president of the United States had their backs.

Those who were less discrete brandished weapons, toted confederate flags and wore clothing with lurid Nazi symbolism during the Jan. 6, 2021 Trump-inspired terrorist insurrection in Washington D.C. And, we are learning that Trump administration officials and Congress members who took an oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, were in on the plot to overthrow the government and trample the rights of U.S. citizens.

We could use John Lewis’ voice right about now.

In his final visit to Selma, Ala. in 2020, an ever-hopeful Lewis told the crowd, “I want to thank you…for not giving in, for keeping the faith, for keeping your eyes on the prize,” he said, “So don’t get weary! Keep the faith.”

As he always has.

OUR TOWN

The artistry of the great athlete W hen Wayne Gretzky was asked if he considered himself an artist, he said “Absolutely” and went on to say: “I was an entertainer, an artist and paid to win.” He, along with Pele, Jerry Rice and Michael Jordan were featured in the documentary film “In Search of Greatness,” which explored the unique secrets possessed by the truly great in sports.

The question of whether great athletes are artists is an interesting one. A big part of my life as a sport psychologist is spent observing and working with truly great athletes. When I watch Michael Jordan make a move under the

basket, I think of Mikhail Baryshnikov on the dance floor. When I watch Buddy Marucci, the great amateur golfer, swing a club, I immediately hear the voice of Bing Crosby.

When you are face-to-face with truly transcendent athletes, there is no doubt that you are seeing artistry of the highest order. To be up close and personal with Tiger Woods as he practices hitting perfect two irons that travel about 250 yards and land like gentle butterflies is both shocking and mesmerizing. Or as Susan Sontag once said while watching Mikhail Baryshnikov dance, “it is the blow of the sublime.”

hold the attention of an audience just as great artists do. I once was at a dinner club at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco with my son and we were lucky enough to meet and watch Wynton Marsalis and his band with their straight-ahead jazz. Up until then I knew nothing about jazz and honestly didn’t care for it much.

But watching him play was pure hypnotic magic. And this ability to capture attention and to hypnotize people is also something the great athletes do all the time. Wayne Gretzky was so good because he had the ability to hypnotically confuse the guys who tried to defend him. It takes a powerful mind to do this.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was pumping iron, he was the most successful body builder in the world, winning the Mr. Olympia trophy six years running. In the documentary “Pump-

ing Iron,” he showed how he was able to captivate, confuse, discourage and eventually defeat Lou Ferrigno, his closest competitor. This is a man with utter control of his surroundings. Recently Gary Player, the golfing legend, was at my golf club and when I asked our assistant pro what Player was like, he told me “it was like he controlled the entire environment.”

Great athletes are great artists.

Schwarzenegger took ballet lessons to learn how to move in a more compelling way when he was on stage and transitioning from one pose to the next.

Great artists and great athletes both have an obsessive devotion to excellence and the ability to work nonstop.

My son was a set designer and once worked with Madonna. He told me that she was a pure workaholic and extremely demanding of all who were on her team. Tiger Woods’ fanatic perfectionism and work ethic is legendary.

Patrick Reed, who many say has the best hands and best short game in golf, was once asked by a TV interviewer what it feels like to have such natural talent. He responded: “Actually, anyone can have a natural and pure putting stroke. All it takes is practice six hours a day every day for about 10 years. And then puff, you have all the natural talent you want.”

I recently asked Gilad Bloom, former No. 1 ranked tennis player out of Israel and an accomplished jazz musician, whether athletes ought to be considered artists and he told me: “Any sport that is played at the highest level is an

art form. Just like any great piece of architecture is art and why a Lamborghini is art. But the big difference between art and sports is that in art there is no loser.

In sport, at the end of every match there is one winner and one loser.”

And perhaps the greatest fusion of athleticism and art is exemplified by the warrior poet, Mohammed Ali. He was vicious in the ring but massively entertaining and witty outside the ring. Here is the poem he recited at a press conference before the fight with George Foreman, the fight that he was supposed to lose. It went like this: “I’ve wrestled with alligators I’ve tussled with a whale I’ve handcuffed lightening I’ve put thunder in jail.

You know that I’m bad I’ve murdered a rock I’ve injured a stone And I’ve hospitalized a brick.

I’ve run through a hurricane And did not get wet And when George Foreman meets me He will pay his debt!”

So, to the question of whether great athletes are artists, I rest my case. Wayne Gretzky to Bing Crosby. Frank Sinatra to Michael Jordan. Jerry Rice to Bruno Mars. Pele to Baryshnikov. All these are warrior poets who worked very hard, had an unrelenting passion to win, had God-given talent, a little bit of luck and support, and somehow managed to transform their entire fields. And aren’t we the lucky ones to be here to see it?

Nature is not just human, it’s all living things

I

n my columns I usually try to alert readers to the many environmental hazards that surround us, from single-use plastics to chemical contaminants in everyday products, from water and air pollutants to our warming planet. But I have another message to convey as well, and that is that humans are as much a part of nature as any other living thing on this planet. Sometimes it feels like a stretch to say so, considering our built environment and technologydriven existence, but it’s true.

What do humans need for survival?

We completely depend on the life-sustaining gifts from the Earth that all living things require—air, water and food.

This has been heartbreakingly apparent recently as we watch scenes of Ukrainians walking through their war-torn streets with empty containers searching for clean water to drink, and trying to avoid the smoke and pollutants from burning structures that make it hard to breathe. Thousands of Ukrainians who didn’t evacuate have limited or no food supplies.

I find it a worthwhile exercise to think about how dependent we actually are on the Earth’s ecosystems, the Earth’s atmosphere and the Earth’s fertile oceans and land masses. In recent

conversations with a doctor who specializes in circadian rhythms, he reminded me that the sun’s light and warmth is also critically important for all living things.

These simple “facts of life” are things we humans take for granted, things we don’t ever think about as we go about our daily lives. Even more remote to our thinking are the ecosystems that supply some of these life-sustaining needs. Understanding the peril our planet is in is a first step in realizing that our activities and decisions are directly related to the Earth’s resources that keep us alive.

In photographs taken from space, it’s clearly apparent that our planet is made up mostly of water. However, more than 99% of the water on Earth is unusable by humans and other terrestrial living things, leaving a very small percentage of the remaining 1% in clean, fresh water to share with our fellow inhabitants.

For as long as many of us can remember, the water cycle kept the water flowing into our faucets, our hoses, our swimming pools and showers. But that luxury is coming to an end. Erratic precipitation and heat waves are taking their toll. Ask your friends and family living in California’s drought-stricken regions. Ask vineyard owners and farmers

who have extracted all they can from their underground aquifers. Ask those who have been forced to evacuate their homes and neighborhoods due to wildfires. This is the new norm in many parts of the country.

Water vapor, the most abundant greenhouse gas, increases as the Earth’s atmosphere warms, which in turn increases cloud formation and precipitation. We have increasingly seen this process playing out in devastating flooding from record-breaking rainfall levels.

Water vapor stays in the atmosphere a much shorter time than other greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which can last for years and even centuries. However, a warmer atmosphere retains more water vapor which increases the potential for greater ozone formation.

Scientists are just beginning to unravel the importance of water vapor in terms of climate change. We do know that heat and humidity in combination with vehicle and industrial air emissions make it harder to breathe, even for people without respiratory illnesses.

Conventional farming across the world, but especially in the United States, is also a major contributor to global warming. Farming today is exploitative and extractive, utilizing technologies and inputs that produce prodigious amounts of greenhouse gases, contaminate ground and surface waters with chemical pesticides and fertilizers and leave the soil barren and unproductive unless we continue the unnatural and destructive cycle.

We are even poisoning the essential pollinators needed by farmers and growers around the world with pesticides. The use of cheap sewage sludge for fertilizer, which comes from waste-

water treatment plants, is contaminated with PFAS and other chemicals, as well as metals and occasionally pathogens, that create national food scares about e-coli and salmonella outbreaks. Thanks to organic farmers who work with the soil, enriching it as they grow, we have choices if we are lucky enough to live in a place where organic food is widely available.

The global warming debate pits those who think this is just a cyclical occurrence against those who believe humans have caused not just global warming, but other related catastrophic events and conditions that put our planet and all living things at risk.

I am in the latter camp. It is at our peril to continue to behave as if we are not part of nature and as if there are no consequences to destroying it. Be it hubris, greed or insatiable consumption, humans manipulate and use nature to make money. We need to think about our children and grandchildren potentially living with a scarcity of food, contaminated air and water and a climate that will overwhelm our current infrastructure for temperature control.

Humans are the problem and humans working as an integral part of nature can be the solution.

Not high on legal weed in New York

T

here is a difference between righting injustice and actively promoting a drug lifestyle in order to boost a state’s balance sheet and appeal to young voters.

At issue is the disparate sentencing over marijuana possession, creating economic development/entrepreneurial opportunities for disadvantaged communities, and making medical marijuana as available as any other prescription drug.

But states and some localities are speeding ahead to get on the recreational weed bandwagon.

Indeed, you can’t walk down any street in Manhattan without being overcome by the sickening smell of pot, or seeing those leafy green Weed World trucks on every other corner. I wonder why there isn’t the same public health concern over second-hand smoke and drinking alcohol on public streets?

The argument that marijuana is no more harmful or habit-forming than drinking alcohol and is not a gateway drug to more harmful drugs doesn’t wash with me. And the jury is still out on what impact marijuana will have on developing brains. The claims that cannabis will be kept out of hands of young people, will not contribute to DUI or impact workplace safety strikes me as absurdly Pollyannaish. So is the suggestion that somehow making marijuana readily available will somehow cut down on opioid abuse and death (opioid deaths surged in 2021 to nearly 100,000).

There is one claim that does make sense: making cannibis legal will cut

down on illegal use and sale. Indeed, the focus is on the economic benefits of states capturing the sales tax revenue from what is projected to be a $30 billion industry this year, dollars that would otherwise be lost, and to create new entrepreneurial, economic development pathways for the very communities victimized by unjust drug prosecution. (18,000 languishing in prison for nonviolent marijuana possession have petitioned the Biden administration for clemency; Biden just granted 78 clemency.)

“Marijuana legalization is one of the easiest ways to boost the economies of states still recovering from the pandemic – not to mention addressing longstanding racial inequities in our criminal justice system,” a missive from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee reads. “So it’s no surprise that Republicans are siding with the 8% of Americans who think marijuana should be completely illegal.”

Manhattan/Brooklyn Congressman Jerry Nadler writes to Moveon.org members, “For far too long, marijuana’s legal status has been used as an excuse for police to harass and oppress communities of color. It happens here in my hometown of New York City and across the country.” Nadler is reintroducing “the most sweeping legislation to transform these laws,” the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act. “Black Americans are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested on marijuana charges than white Americans, a racist enforcement strategy that has

overcrowded our prison system with non-violent offenders and fueled ‘tough on crime’ propaganda,” Bernie Sanders’ Our Revolution campaign writes in support of the Senate passing the MORE Act, championing an issue that helped make him such a darling for young voters and Baby Boomers.

“While people’s lives are being destroyed by archaic prohibition laws and a racist prison industrial complex, companies are making money on cannabis in states where it’s legal,” the Vermont senator says. “We need equity and justice. It’s high time we legalize it for all and expunge the records of those arrested for marijuana possession.”

I have no complaint with the MORE Act, which would provide relief and criminal expungements to communities ravaged by the racist enforcement of marijuana prohibition; remove marijuana from the Controlled Sub-

stances Act, which also will pave the way for more medical research; give the state legal marijuana industry the same access to financial services and tax treatment as legal businesses; provide a road map for states to legalize marijuana in a just and equitable way; enable veterans to get medical cannabis recommendations from VA doctors; and remove the threat of deportation for immigrants accused of minor marijuana infractions.

But correcting injustice is very different from promoting a cannabis culture.

New York state is embracing the cannabis-growing industry with relish.

The industry is projected to be worth $7 billion in this state and generate $1.25 billion in revenue from taxes and fees related to recreational cannabis in six years. At the same time, the state is mounting an obligatory “public education” campaign to warn of the dangers of impaired driving, the risks of youth cannabis use, how to store cannabis in your home, and how to respectfully consume cannabis in public.

“Part of us building the strongest cannabis industry in the nation is making sure New Yorkers have relevant facts at their fingertips, and we remind all New Yorkers as they join 4/20 celebrations today that it’s never safe to drive high, you shouldn’t consume cannabis in disruptive ways, and cannabis can damage growing brains in youth,” Gov. Hochul said on April 20, the unofficial “cannabis holiday.”

Earlier this month, New York’s Cannabis Control Board approved 52

Adult-use Cannabis Conditional Cultivator Licenses across the state, including three on the East End of Long Island, from a pool of 150.

“New York’s farms have been the backbone of our state’s economy since before the American Revolution, and now New York’s farms will be at the center of the most equitable cannabis industry in the nation,” Hochul said.

“I’m proud of the work the Office of Cannabis Management and the Cannabis Control Board are doing to get adultuse cannabis sales up and running as fast as possible without compromising our mission to uplift communities and individuals most impacted by the past century of cannabis prohibition.”

Meanwhile, the state is also developing regulations for legal medical home cultivation (so you can grow your own).

There are unsettling issues that have yet to be determined. What about workers who use pot on their own time (or even lunch hour) but come to work impaired – airline pilot, police officer, firefighter, factory worker, surgeon, teacher? Legalizing marijuana will likely invalidate drug testing altogether.

But I really worry about promoting a cannibis culture that means kids will grow up with a literal taste for pot because the smells are all around and weed products become ubiquitous, with an aura of being absolutely harmless, and a social more that promotes pot use like a 6 p.m. cocktail.

Then will we be seeing a new sort of Stop Smoking campaign and a whole new public safety apparatus?

A perfect financial storm hits Long Island

I

nflation is hurting Long Islanders as prices are rising faster than wages.

The Consumer Price Index hit 8.3% in April.

This spike, among the highest in 40 years, caused in part by high energy prices, supply chain disruptions, and the federal government giving money away to help the economy during COVID has left residents with less money to pay for today’s more expensive goods and services. Unfortunately, just as these issues negatively affect individuals, they are also about to unleash the perfect budget-wrecking scenario on local governments, for the foreseeable future.

New York State has a mandatory 2% property tax cap on school districts and local governments. This means every Long Island school district, special

district, village, city, town and county, is not allowed to increase tax levies, year over year, by more than 2%.

As such, collectively bargained agreements are often forced to limit annual raises by that same 2%. With 8% inflation, municipal workers will lose roughly 6% this year on their real wages. You can bet any new contract negotiations will insist on an increase in wages to keep up with inflation.

Employer contributions to the New York state pension retirement system are also going to put pressure on future local government budgets. Contractually obligated pension fund contributions are based on a rolling average of the last five years of New York state pension fund returns.

The stock market is having a miserable year and this will bring down the

funded.

Let’s not forget COVID has blown health care costs sky high. Expect increases to health care premiums to local governments to be up well over 10%. Energy prices are dramatically higher, too. Everything from electricity to heat and gasoline will be substantially higher than what was budgeted in 2022.

Assuming not much changes until the next budget cycle, we can expect either massive cuts to services and municipal employee staff, or attempts to override the tax cap that will need a mandatory 60% vote from constituents. Since every elected official prefers to brag about not raising taxes, piercing the tax cap is the less likely alternative.

Those who will be most affected will be financially struggling communi-

ties which have a rough go even when times are good. Long Island’s 124 school districts will become a tale of two cities.

Struggling districts will have to make draconian cuts, while wealthy districts with well-funded parent groups will be able to create foundations to make sure their children continue to receive a quality public education.

The COVID-induced supply chain disruption, inflation and spike in health care costs will wreak havoc on future local government budgets.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Creative ways to generate revenue and find efficiencies in operations should be embraced. The best time for change is during a crisis and there’s no time like the present. Local governments that adapt quickly have the best chance of weathering the impending storm.

Time to accept President Biden’s many failings

I

read an opinion piece in last week’s paper attacking my oped. As per their modus operandi, writers like him when they cannot quote any facts or figures resort to ad hominem attacks. This is so typical of the progressive, socialist

left.

Like President Biden, they must blame President Trump for the sorry shape of both domestic and foreign policies. Perhaps, if they stop drinking the Kool-Aid long enough they would actually be able to see the in-

credible damage that the Biden administration has already done.

In case they still have their blinders on, gas prices set an all-time high this week of $4.75 a gallon in Great Neck. In addition, across the United States, there is now a dra-

matic shortage of baby formula.

It is time to get over it, Biden has been president for almost a year and a half and it is long past time to accept responsibility for the abject failure of his policies.

Does anyone really believe that

we are better off today than we were four years ago! Way to go Joe, I can’t wait to see what you will screw up next.

Medicare disadvantage as plans favors insurers

om Suozzi and Lee Zeldin, gubernatorial candidates, joined fellow New York House members: Bowman, Espaillat, Garbarino, Jeffries, Malliotakis, Maloney, Meeks, Meng, Rice, Stefanik, Torres and Velazquez in writing a Jan. 28 letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services praising “highquality, patient-centered” Medicare Advantage plans.

These members of the House of Representatives claim that Medicare Advantage programs “consistently deliver better care and value” as ref-

erenced in their letter to Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the Medicare administrator.

Remarkably, an April 2022 report from the Office of the Inspector General in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (OEI-09-1800260: April 2022) raised concerns about some Medicare Advantage plans denying “prior-authorization” requests to medically necessary care, even though the requests met Medicare coverage rules.

It is obvious that these congress members are putting the financial

gains of corporate health insurance companies ahead of the health needs of consumers.

Recently, over 65,000 NYC Medicare-eligible retirees opted out of a proposed Medicare Advantage Plan which forces retirees to pay more and sadly makes it harder to get healthcare.

Traditional Medicare unlike Medicare Advantage Plans gives physicians the judgment to request medical tests and procedures.

This OIG Report identified tens of millions of denials issued each year for both authorization and reimburse-

ments, and audits of the private insurers showed evidence of “widespread and persistent problems related to inappropriate denials of services and payment,” the investigators found.

Rosemary Bartholomew, who led the team that worked on the report said that these denials may delay or even prevent a Medicare Advantage beneficiary from getting needed care.

New Yorkers need gubernatorial candidates that put consumers health needs above corporate profits.

Traditional Medicare should be protected and expanded for New York-

ers as opposed to these “Medicare Disadvantage” Plans that deny medically necessary services, even though the requests meet Medicare coverage rules.

Our Congressional Delegation needs to put its citizens first-above corporate health insurance profits.

Contact your Congress members and tell them that corporate profits will not be tolerated by the expansion of “Medicare Disadvantage” Plans.

Spoiled Americans must learn to ride out inflation

L

ooking over the basket of products and commodities the government uses to produce the Consumer Price Indexes, it appears that the biggest hikes center around three key areas: -Housing-Energy-New and (especially) Used Vehicles.

Naturally, increases in energy costs feed into other sectors like food and the transportation needed to get product to market. Even so, food prices while elevated haven’t gone up that much. Higher now, yes, but still fairly range-bound over the past decade, outside of the post-COVID spike.

Even so, food prices can be quite volatile at any given time due to droughts,

poor harvests, or shoot-from-the-hip tariff policies. Anyone who has pushed a shopping cart down a produce aisle knows this well, and that’s why the government has an index that leaves food and energy out of the mix.

But the other sharply elevated prices are a cause for introspection. There’s some evidence that the used car market, which spiked the “headline” inflation number, is finally cooling off. And there are indicators that we may be on the other side of the slope on the inflation curve right now.

“The cure for high prices is high prices” as the saying goes.

Certainly, the Fed’s telegraphing its intentions helped do a little cooling and demand can’t stay elevated forever. That

could bring the headline CPI numbers down a bit. But as I mentioned in a previous piece, the headline number can lead an observer astray.

There is very little Fed policy can do about an intractable housing shortage or choked-off energy supplies.

For energy, the Ukraine invasion has rattled global supplies as nations seek to cut off Russia’s funding for its war. That put our domestic suppliers in the catbird seat. Note to naysayers: This country is still energy independent, but our swing producers are sitting on their hands.

Some industry players see the price surge as bankruptcy bait and are content to watch the dollars roll in without lifting a finger on capital expenditures. Who

could blame them? Better to sell what you already produce at high prices than to add to supply only to sell it at lower prices.

There are other factors responsible for the price action of these two components, however. For housing, suffocating local zoning ordinances have choked off needed inventory growth. Displacement and relocation on the heels of the COVID lockdowns have caused localized price surges in certain parts of the country.

Fed policy can’t fix those two, and housing and energy are perhaps the two most important components of the cost of living. I won’t go into the political implications here, as even droughts are blamed on officeholders.

I would hate to think that monetary

policy would be used to pretty up the numbers while it is impotent in dealing with the inflationary inputs that caused currently elevated prices.

People have to learn that not every problem we face can be relieved by a policy solution. Some things just have to be endured until they run their course. And as we have seen so many times, they most certainly will.

Unfortunately, in a spoiled country where even wearing a mask is equated with tyranny, no one will go quietly.

Great Neck’s Robert Zimmerman announced his Congressional run for New York’s Third Congressional District.

Zimmerman, 67, is co-president of ZE Creative Communications on Bond Street in Great Neck, a public relations firm he began 33 years ago with Ron Edelson.

He is seeking the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), who is running for governor.

If elected, Zimmerman would become the first announced gay member of Congress from Long Island and Queens.

“I have known and worked with Robert Zimmerman for many years. Housing needs may change as adults grow older and their children move out. Adults nearing retirement may want to reduce their cost of living and could find a big house is more than they need at this stage in life.

According to the financial management resource The Motley Fool, in 2019 48 percent of seniors planned to downsize, while 52 percent wanted to remain in their existing homes.

A lower cost of living could be the primary motivator to sell, but less house to maintain and the extra free time that comes with fewer chores can be powerful motivators as well.

Many adults age 50 and older consider adult communities when seeking to downsize their homes. Senior home options are categorized based on the level of care they provide.

“Active adult living” is a relatively new option that reflects a growing desire for residences that afford aging adults a chance to downsize their homes and engage in their favorite activities.

Active adult living, leisure living or active adult communities include single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums, and other housing options within a community that offers an array of amenities and services. According to Retirement Living, residents in active adult communities enjoy country club settings with amenities like swimming pools, clubhouses, golf courses, exercise centers, walking trails, computer labs, hobby centers, and even on-site restaurants.

Active adult living communities may provide transportation options and have their own travel clubs. Though active adult residences do not

typically provide medical services, many communities are conveniently located close to local shopping centers and complexes, ensuring that the doctor’s office is not that far away.

Other features of active living covered by homeowner’s association fees include outdoor maintenance like landscaping, snow removal and sanitation services. Security, internet service and cable also may be included in the monthly fees. Active communities emulate the benefits afforded by all-inclusive vacations, where day-to-day details are handled by management so residents can focus on fun and leisure.

Unlike general neighborhoods, seniors may appreciate active living communities because they have access to an array of services within the community. Some promote a resort vacation feeling, while others may focus on sports or cultural life. What’s more, since age is restricted, residents know that many people in these communities have shared experiences.

Active adult communities also are amenable to adults who like to travel. Residents get the peace of mind to lock up their homes and leave knowing lawns will still be mowed and shrubs trimmed - removing signs that the residence is unoccupied. This is an ideal situation for a snowbird who spends time in a different location for part of the year.

Active adult living is the relatively new kid on the block for senior communities, filling an important niche for independent retirees and near-retirees.

No organic lunch for Great Neck students

I

n 2018, as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education (Board trustees, superintendent, teachers, administrators, community members), one of my goals was to introduce and implement an organic food lunch program for the students in the school district, and I was hoping that this endeavor would be embraced by the committee.

To my total surprise and disappointment, the idea was downplayed. It was pointed out that the school lunch program is funded by the state, and the discussion was left at that, with silence and blank stares. The schools abide by who provides the most funding. In this case, the state and corporations.

Does this mean that there should be no ef-

fort to introduce even one organic food item to the menu? The school district wasn’t interested in funding even one organic food choice. What are taxpayers’ dollars going to? No caring for what the students eat, as long as the school district receives its funding (and some perks)?

While the present menu for the kids appears to be good, if not organically grown, it is laden with pesticides and lab-created GMOs (genetically modified organisms). There are factory-farmed meat items on the menu. Period.

As an innovator in the nutritional supplements industry as well as teaching about the food system for 15 years in continuing ed classes and programs including the Queens Public Library Green Initiative, and having written

many articles on such subjects as a contributing columnist for Blank Slate Media and Anton Media Group, I was trying to explain what organic means and why it is imperative for health, longevity, animal welfare, and Planet Earth.

Another suggestion I presented to the committee was placing safeguards against cyberbullying, but that was again stifled. One more roadblock for trying to bring about positive changes for the kids.

Being disenchanted with its politics, after a couple of additional meetings, I emailed the committee members explaining that I am no longer going to participate as a member. There were no names of participants or minutes regarding these meeting conversation topics.

No matter which candidate you vote for in the school election, schools and libraries are going to collapse, created by design. The corporate agenda is to salvage the schools by owning and running them. Do you think this will be an improvement?

Just a footnote: As the grandeur in our minds of the Great Neck school system has been taken down, there is a connection to the empty storefronts in town and real estate to follow.

At this time of school elections, as a “highly educated” community and product of our educational system, what do you want for the kids?

The repercussions of overturning Roe v. Wade The leaked memo about the Supreme Court possibly planning to overturn Roe v. Wade will have repercussions that were not considered and could affect not only the justices who voted for the first draft but also the senators, congressmen and local officials who will support it. This ruling will not only affect poor people but many of the middle class who are currently surviving just to make ends meet.

I can see one situation where a loving couple with two children discover that the wife is pregnant, but maintaining the household and caring for two kids are about all she can handle.

Initially, this unwanted pregnancy will cause her depression followed by suicide. Who will the husband blame for the death of his wife and what will the husband do?

Former President Trump encouraged his

supporters not to let one’s anger fester and thus do whatever is necessary to release such frustration. Anger management was a thing of the past. The insurrection of Jan. 6 resulted in140 police officers being injured and at least three dying. In the above situation, will the husband go after the people who he believed were responsible for the suicide of his wife? Taking it even further, what if the wife had been raped and the law prevented her from having an abortion? That would cause the husband even greater anger and who could blame him for his subsequent actions.

Any lawyer could invoke an insanity defense based upon the fact that the defendant must have been suffering from a mental defect at the time of the crime due to the anguish caused by the suicide of his wife.

As an alternative to revenge, there might be a way to handle unwanted pregnancies without anyone getting hurt except for possibly the children of these unwanted pregnancies. Anti-abortion supporters should set up baskets outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., or outside court buildings throughout the United States, where newborn babies could be dropped off. Of course, during winter months, such baskets must be heated, and such babies should be delivered to local churches where they can be utilized for fund-raising purposes by having them auctioned off. Such babies should be represented by law firms for purposes of confidentiality.

With our country heading in the direction to expand the meaning of free speech and based upon the success of the January 6th insurrec-

tion, pro-choice protestors should be allowed to protest inside the Supreme Court building or in the halls of Congress, thus ensuring that they will be able to voice their opinions without causing physical harm to others. As Donald Trump would say, it’s best not to hold in your feelings and be allowed to express yourself, especially when you’re telling the truth. Nevertheless, if violence does occur, so be it. It supports the theory of cause and effect.

A more realistic solution might be for the president to utilize his power by issuing a Presidential Executive Order to immediately pardon every person who is convicted of charges applicable to participating in abortions.

The Big Lie is pure political corruption

any Port Washington Times readers are probably, like me, old enough to remember when Nassau County was widely known as a virtual exemplar of political corruption. The Mangano administration and before that the Gulotta administration, the municipal government of the Town of Oyster Bay and State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos all drew headlines, legal prosecutions and even prison sentences.

The political reaction to those revelations was direct and fairly simple: “Throw the rascals out.”

Many voters, who were and remained convinced of the merits of conservative political and economic principles, voted for Democratic candidates even if they had to hold their noses while doing so—or perhaps chose to stay home rather than to vote for candidates of the disgraced Republican Party, even those who had hadn’t been involved in government and had absolutely nothing to do with the scandals. Of course, those voters retained and later exercised their rights in subsequent elections to cast their ballots for new Republican candidates.

My reason for citing this historical perspective is to offer a suggested framework for what we have recently seen in headlines, newscasts, and TV political commentary: a parallel example of political corruption, but in an order of magniture immeasurably greater, with the primary purpose not so much for personal financial gain but, more insidious and threatening to our nation’s concept of democratic (small “d”) government, with the goal

of retention or enhancement of political power.

Among the seeming flood of revelations emerging recently from Washington, we have learned that many of then-President Trump’s closest aides and associates, including his son Don Jr. and his chief-of-staff, Mark Meadows, KNEW that the proposals to overturn the 2020 election results were plainly illegal and, in all probability, unconstitutional. It’s even been found that many of Trump’s advisers, as well as members of the Republican congressional leadership, had urged him by email and phone to take some action to stop the disorder and to urge the rioters to leave the Capitol.

It should hardly surprise anyone to learn that such admonitions were ignored. Mr. Trump has been well known, during his entire business career and then—unexpectedly for some of us who had expected him at least to respect the principles of the office—even during his presidency to bend rules, evade laws and exploit loopholes for his own personal advantage.

But we’d have thought, perhaps naively, that elected members of Congress and other senior government officials, who had sworn to uphold the law and the Constitution, would have had the courage to resist instructions from their “boss” that they must have recognized as being morally unacceptable (e.g., to assert that the presidential election was “rigged” and “stolen” when they KNEW that those claims were false) and either refused to obey or submitted their resignations.

One of the most flagrant examples was that

of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who made a nationally televised statement from the floor of the House immediately following the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol in which he clearly and emphatically placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of still-President Trump, and who subsequently told other members of the Republican leadership that he planned to call Donald Trump to tell him he should resign or, perhaps, face the prospect of being removed from office, whether by impeachment or by employment of the 25th Amendment. He then had the temerity to deny publicly to interviewers that he had ever said or done any such thing— until taped recordings of those comments came to light.

Similarly, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and many other members of the presidential entourage were in public consistently ardent supporters of the “big lie” of a stolen election, but who were then revealed by recordings or transcripts of e-mails that they had personally recognized the fact that the election had been lost and had told the president so. But they nevertheless remained publicly committed to supporting the Trump fantasy that he had actually “won” in November and even would soon be “re-instated” in office. In other words, they were perfectly willing to perpetrate what they KNEW to be a lie in the vain hope that somehow they would be able not only to turn the factual tide of the actual election but that somehow their fictitious “results” would win the day and restore them to their positions of power and authority.

Such falsification or manipulation of readily determinable facts (citing instead what Trump aide Kellyann Conway referred to as “alternative facts”) for the clear purpose of maintaining their proximity to high office and the associated political power is, in my opinion, readily definable as corruption— and, by its nature, may be considered even more dangerous and damaging than the relatively common, straightforward case of exercising political favors or influence in return for cash or other financial gain.

The intent to override the results of an election, simply because one’s preferred candidate has lost, would override the very basis for the form of government that has proven to be the bedrock of our nation and the solid support for our growth and prosperity. It’s my conviction that those who promoted the corruption, and the Republican Party that encouraged and sustained them, have well earned the political reaction of ignoring the philosophical differences between liberal and conservative, between “red” and “blue” parties, and adopting instead the approach of “throwing the rascals out.” Those voters who remain convinced of the merits of Republican principles of small government, fiscal conservatism, etc., can resort temporarily to the old plea of the former Brooklyn Dodgers: “Wait till next year!”

How the MTA can find $1B for security cameras

TA Chairman Janno Lieber sent a letter to Congress explaining that he needed $1 billion more to expand and update camera systems throughout its subways, buses and commuter rail lines. The estimated total project cost is $1.3 billion.

There is only $300 million programmed within the current $51 billion 2020 — 2024 Five Year Capital Plan, leaving a shortfall of $1 billion.

The MTA averages $1.5 billion in annual funding from the Federal Transit Administration. This will grow to $2

billion yearly over coming years. It is the MTA, not FTA, which determines how these dollars are spent. This does not include even more from the FTA national competitive discretionary Capital Investment Grants New Starts/ Core Expansion and other programs.

Since the MTA only programmed $300 million, you have to assume that the balance of funding would be spent under the next 2025 — 2029 Five Year Capital Program. What is the current status for design, engineering, procurement and implementation schedule for purchase and installation? Will

Lieber make public the detailed project implementation schedule week by week, month by month and year by year for installation of cameras?

This should include the NYC Transit fleet of 6,400 subway cars. NYC Transit, Manhattan and Bronx Surface Operating Authority and MTA Bus combined fleet of 5,500 buses. Long Island Rail Road fleet of 1,151, Metro North Rail Road fleet of 1,268 and Staten Island Railway (managed by NYC Transit) fleet of 61 rail cars. There are also 473 NYC Transit subway, 21 Staten Island Railway, 124 LIRR and

124 Metro North stations.

Have cameras been incorporated into previously awarded contracts for both fleet purchases and station reconstruction projects for all operating agencies? Shouldn’t the MTA consider using a portion of the upcoming Congestion Mitigation Toll revenues for funding. The latest recovery schedule calls for implementation of tolling to begin by December 2023.

Another option is to reprogram funding currently allocated toward the proposed $6.9 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 and $3.6 billion

Metro North Bronx East Penn Station Access.

Biaggi untruthful about conversion therapy

I

was perusing the “Why I’m Running” section of Sen. Alessandra Biaggi’s congressional campaign website and was truly disgusted when I came across the paragraph where she twice claimed to support banning conversion therapy for minors.

The reason for my disgust was that Biaggi, at best, selectively opposes conversion therapy. In fact, at least twice in the past year, Biaggi voted to advance the interests of the conversion therapy industry and even voted to open a loophole potentially allowing for the return of trans conversion therapy.

To give your readers some background, conversion therapy was pioneered decades ago by late psychologist O. Ivar Lovaas. Lovaas viewed members of both the autistic and LGBTQIA+ communities as subhuman and believed, through a system of brutal rewards and punishments (including electric shocks and beatings), that he could build them into people and make them “indistinguishable” from their neurotypical and non-LGBTQIA+ peers, respectively.

Despite the fact that Lovaas was an irredeemable monster, there is still a dedicated cult of conversion therapists who worship him as an infallible humanitarian and refer to themselves as “applied behavior analysts.”

While the use of conversion therapy in an attempt to alter or suppress one’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression was outlawed in New York in 2019 (to Biaggi’s credit, she voted in favor of that legislation), the use of conversion therapy on autistic and other disabled groups is fully legal.

In fact, health insurance is required to cover it, and this industry of abuse is thriving in New York and across the nation.

These conversion therapists claim to have expert knowledge of autism and autistic people, despite the fact that they are not required to take even an introductory course in neurology before being put in a room with an autistic “client.” They also claim that autism is a behavioral condition (it is not) and that they can “extinguish” whatever autistic

traits they arbitrarily deem to be undesirable.

Autistic individuals as young as 18 months old are subjected to this conversion therapy for up to 40 hours a week for several years in a deliberate attempt to exhaust them into compliance. During this process, they are taught that their emotional and physical needs are irrelevant and that they have no right to say no when someone in authority gives them an order or demands physical contact.

Eventually, these victims learn to internalize their suffering. This makes them substantially more likely to develop PTSD, experience burnout, engage in self-harm and become victims of domestic and sexual abuse/assault.

They are also far more likely to develop eating disorders, obesity and diabetes, as force-feeding M&Ms, cookies and other high-sugar foods to their victims is one of the conversion therapists’ go-to means of coercion.

When a victim speaks out against the abuse they experienced (usually

once they reach adulthood), they’re gaslit by the conversion therapists, who have a laundry list of excuses. “Maybe it wasn’t right for you.” “Maybe the person who worked with you wasn’t trained right.” “You can’t prove this is what gave you PTSD.” “How can you even remember what happened when you were that young?” “Our methods have changed since you were in therapy.” “We’re ‘trauma-informed’ now.”

Last year, Biaggi co-sponsored and voted for a bill that was signed into law

by Gov. Kathy Hochul (S1662B). This bill gave these conversion therapists the green light to treat all conditions outlined in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, including gender dysphoria.

The stated purpose of the bill was to attract more conversion therapists to New

York, which in Biaggi’s warped view, would benefit the autistic community.

Earlier this year, Biaggi signed onto a Senate resolution (J2058) declaring March 20 “World Behavior Analysis Day,” a phony holiday made up by conversion-therapy lobbyist/trade groups, including some who still actively support the use of electric shocks and other aversive punishments. The resolution was filled with pro-conversion-therapy propaganda.

Given that Biaggi is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I would think she would empathize with these victims. However, it is clear that, for no other reason than they are disabled, she dehumanizes them just as Lovaas did and doesn’t think they are worthy of being believed or even listened to.

Not only does Biaggi not belong in Congress, she doesn’t belong in any seat of power. No one who supports conversion therapy of any kind does.

Biden has reversed some Trump wreckage

isgruntled delusional Trumputin fanboys (such as your recent correspondent from Great Neck) just can’t get over the fact that Joe Biden (not MY first choice, by the way) and the Democrats have, despite the best efforts at total obstruction by the Trumputin insurrectionists, managed to repair a great deal of the damage done to our nation by the criminal Trumputin regime.

Apparently, content to be a slave to the fossil-fuel global market, the Trumputin fanboy base bemoans the cancellation of the misbegotten, ill-conceived Keystone pipeline and the temporary jobs it may have created. The path to freedom from the tyranny of the global fossil-fuel industry is through the rapid implementation of alternative, renewable, energy sources on a smart grid, not “drill-baby-drill!”

Babies-in-cages might seem like a cure for our border issue to the Trumputin fanboy base, but the demonstrated cruelty of separating families was unforgivable and accomplished very little

if anything in reducing the immigration pressure at our southern border. A more rational approach would have been to address the social and economic conditions that create the migrant “crisis.”

Trumputin’s silly steel wall, wherever it was actually built, was easily cut and penetrated by migrants. The FACTS are that immigrants of ALL varieties commit less crime than non-immigrants, but facts are problematical for the Trumputin base. Babies-in-cages are still apparently more satisfying to the Trumputin fanboy psyche than a real solution. By the way, some of those “Help-Wanted” signs for entry-level jobs that might have been filled by aspiring legally processed migrants who are subject to the same Covid protocols as everyone else, there’s a connection.

Which brings us to inflation. The absolute ignorance and malfeasance of the Trumputin regime in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic (the Trumplican Pandemic) brought our economy to its knees. Russia and China poisoned our social media with anti-vax conspiracy

theories in an attempt to level the playing field with their own, significantly less-effective, vaccines, lest we be more successful than they were/are in combating the virus. The resulting global dislocations to the supply-chain and the production of goods and services laid the groundwork for inflation.

Prices were depressed. Gas prices were especially depressed, due to the lack of demand because of the pandemic. That there would be inflation as the economy came back did not take a crystal ball to predict. This has, of course, been aggravated by the vicious Trumputin invasion of Ukraine and the necessity to progressively ratchet-up sanctions, including those on oil and gas. The continued lockdowns in China (remember, poor-performing vaccines) continue the inflationary pressure on the supply chain.

Despite inflation, as well as supply-chain and labor supply issues (see above), the economy is healthy and vibrant!

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, passed by Democrats, the economic wounds caused by the Trumpli-

can Pandemic are healing (albeit slowly due to Trumplican obstruction). As we recover from the economic crisis, corporate bottom lines are getting healthier.

Job growth month by month has far exceeded any growth during the disgraced Trumputin regime, wages are up, and unemployment is at historic lows! Perfect? No. Uneven, yes, but it represents an historic recovery from the mess that Trumputin left us in.

The disgraced ex-president set the stage for the butchery in Ukraine with his abject subservience as he received his marching orders in Helsinki. Those orders were to dismantle NATO and disable any potential Ukrainian resistance.

Trumputin felt no compunction in trying to extort President Zelenskyy. Fortunately, President Joe Biden, an experienced and respected international figure, was able to repair and restore the alliance in time to support Ukraine in its valiant resistance to Russian butchery. It was Trumputin who stood by silently while his “Good Friend President Xi” was turning sand pits in the South Chine Sea into

heavily armed naval-aviation bases. His other “bestie,” his pen-pal in North Korea, was at the same time perfecting his nukes and missile delivery systems.

It was also the disgraced ex-president who set the timeline for the Afghanistan withdrawal, which resulted in the unexpectedly rapid collapse of the Afghan regime. Biden administration defense officials were fortunately able to render useless the advanced military equipment that Trumputin planned to leave there for the clearly collapsing regime.

All this corruption and incompetence came to a head with the Big Lie and the attempted coup. We are indeed fortunate that the utter incompetence of Trumputin extended to his ability to stage a successful coup. We must, however, remain vigilant, as the Neo-Fascist Trumputin personality cult remains as a toxin to the body politic, be it in the form of a Cotton, a Cruz, a Hawley, or a DeSantis.

Is your homeowners insurance adequate I always ask my client sellers and new homeowners how much insurance they carry on their homes. Surprisingly, the answers I receive are more varied than I would’ve anticipated. I believe the reasons are mixed, e.g., what companies they use, their coverages, and who their agents advising them and their reasons for doing so.

There are salespeople and then there are a few who I would consider advisers and/or consultants, like myself, who are professional in their approach and have strong expertise in their field; they are totally transparent, upfront and candid in the methods of conveying the crucial and critical information that sellers, investors, purchasers, renters and lessees of residential and commercial properties require to make conscious and accurate decisions. One’s home is the most valuable asset that the majority of homeowners in the nation possess.

Seeking out less than the most intelligent and knowledgeable Real Estate Broker with the greatest number of years of experience is like “playing with fire.”

When it comes to homeowner insurance, it is necessary to seek out those professionals who will not “sell you” insurance, but are working in the business and not at it to provide you with an accurate and concise proposal and accounting for your home. No one wants to pay too much for insurance, but

what you do want is adequate coverage to handle fire, flood, wind damage, theft etc. as well as personal liability in the event of someone hurting themselves in your home or on your property.

With global warming and more frequent unstable weather patterns, such as hurricanes and severe wind storms, rates have increased quite a lot over the past 5-10 years. That is why checking your policies yearly and seeking out additional quotes will be a prudent path to take to make sure you are receiving the “biggest bang for your buck” for your required and necessary coverage.

Piggybacking your homeowner’s policy with your auto insurance policy will always provide you better rates as insurance companies want all your business, not just a part of it. Some companies will have you install a device in your car to monitor your driving, but as a bonus will provide future discounts for those safe drivers.

Be careful not to put in minor claims to minimize any potential future increases in your yearly premiums. Also, take the highest deductible that you feel comfortable with as long as you normally have few if any claims to increase your savings. Lastly, you might want to consider an umbrella policy up and above your basic policy, assuming you have other assets and desire stronger coverage. It is not an expensive addition and you will have

greater peace of mind knowing that you are in a stronger position with the best policy in the event of a major lawsuit or claim.

Any work to be done inside or outside your home must be done with a licensed and insured contractor (or you are taking your own calculated risk in the event of any issues that might arise, such as damage to your property, person or any individual). You will need enough coverage in the event that you must sue a contractor or are being sued by anyone (ask if you have coverage for this).

When any work is considered, you must always ask your licensed and insured contractor for an additional certificate of insurance either covering you as a person of in-

terest or if your property is titled in a corporate name. I also advise you to have your personal name added to that insurance certificate, too.

A copy must be provided to you as the homeowner in advance before any work is commenced. Better to be safe than sorry, as I have seen so many times that issues and problems can and do come about.

We all want to save money, but this is one area where cutting corners will potentially work against you if proper coverage isn’t considered. It can come back later on to hurt you financially when someone gets injured, damage occurs on your property or worse there is a fatality.

HOA’s, townhomes, condos and co-ops are no different, but in fact proper insurance is even more crucial and critical. What happens in your place and any work that is done there could have an adverse affect on other unit or property owners who live next to and within the community and complex. Fires, floods, and physical and personal damage can have an immense impact on your personal financial well-being, if you have less than adequate insurance coverage.

Some developments may have certain minimum requirements to protect all homeowners in the event of a major or minor issue that might occur in the future. The corporation policy for the development or building should also be reviewed yearly by the board or their

attorney to update and/or make changes as needed. Most do not read their policies, but I do recommend that you do so and especially the fine print, too. To be safe you should go over your policy with your insurance agent and be prepared to ask as many questions as possible so you will be that much more informed about your coverage and what isn’t included or should be added to your policy.

Work to be done within a development or building also must be addressed so that any contractor who may need substantial insurance coverage has a sufficient amount to handle any and all potential issues and incidents that could and sometimes do occur. The boards of co-ops, condos and HOA’s should be diligent by consistently seeking proposals on a yearly basis to ascertain necessary information about their insurance needs and if any changes or updates might be required. The parties must make sure their current policy is not only adequate for the needs of the unit owners but that the pricing is fair and within the budget of the development.

Insurance is extremely important to protect you and unit owners from claims and lawsuits, so be smart and aware of your specific, “needs and wants” in your policies.

Don’t procrastinate, so give yourself enough time to review and update your coverages in advance of your policy expiration date.

For individuals who want to file for the one-time payment before the May 15 deadline, they must provide proof of suffering a negative economic impact from the pandemic to be eligible for the payment.

Documents such as receipts of unemployment benefits, food or housing insecurity, increased child-care expenses, coronavirus-related death expenses or unreimbursed remote work/learning expenses can be submitted through the Boost Nassau online portal.

The payments will only be sent to homeowners who already receive the state’s STAR or enhanced STAR exemptions, officials said.

Chin re-elected, Herricks budget approved Continued from Page 1 The new budget represents a spending increase of 1.99% from the current year and calls for a tax increase of 0.5%, which falls below the cap guideline of 1.61%.

Over the last seven years, the district’s average tax levy increase has been 1.54%.

Some 76% of the budget is devoted to programs and 13% goes to capital improvements, according to district officials. The district anticipates state aid of $16.6 million, an increase of $2.2 million from the current year.

Some highlights include funding for socialemotional learning programs, instructional technology improvement and updated facilities.

District officials previously said they plan to fund a partnership with Northwell Health for crisis intervention and underwrite additional social worker staffing at the middle school.

In terms of facilities, the proposal includes bathroom renovations at the Searingtown and Center Street schools, art room renovations at Searingtown and the high school, and technology classroom upgrades at the middle school.

The district also plans to complete an initiative to provide each student with a Chromebook, which has been at the center of its technology goals.

Chin, who ran unopposed, stays on the board for a fourth term that will officially begin July 1. In addition to her role as trustee, she has also served on the board as a vice president and president, specifically during contract negotiations with the

teacher’s union and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to her time on the board, Chin was a PTA president and PTA council vice president for a collective six years. She said she saw a chance to be on the school board as “the right time to move forward in my role in the district as well as in the community.”

Chin previously said if she was re-elected she would maintain her commitment to keeping Herricks at its current level while also ensuring that the district finds the best replacement possible for outgoing Superintendent Fino Celano.

“I want to assure our community that choosing the right leader to be at the helm of our district is our top priority,” Chin previously said.

Celano, who has held the role since 2015, is retiring this June at the end of the school year.

The district previously announced that the board is in the final stages of finding his replacement and hopes to update the community in the near future.

Outside of being a trustee, Chin said she has been an adult leader of Boy Scout Troop 201 since 2011 and a strong supporter of both the Herricks Athletics Boosters and Council of PTA’s.

She is also a member of the United Way Community Impact Council, chairperson of the Herricks Korean Community and has been a member of the Nassau County Asian American Affairs Committee since its inception in 2019. She currently works in the Department of Community Services and Services for the Aging in the Town of North Hempstead.

Chaminade coach Jack Moran, who coached Regan at Chaminade, said Jimmy’s

parents, James and Mary, remain a strong presence at the school, each year speaking to the Flyers’ players about their son.

“We have photos of him up everywhere and we tell the new players each year just what he stood for,” Moran said. “To play a program like Manhasset, such a wonderful,

historic program, and be a part of this game every year just means a lot to all of us.”

Even though the game’s outcome was never in doubt, both teams’ players showed great sportsmanship after the final whistle, coming together for photos and posing with the Regs Rock trophy that’s awarded to the

winner each season.

“It’s just a special environment to be in this game,” Landolphi said. “To keep Jimmy’s memory alive and to have these two great teams playing in front of these fans, it was something we’ve all really been looking forward to.”

She was ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution to the town, $48,330 to an insurance company for a claim made by the town and pleaded guilty to seconddegree corrupting the government charges.

His brother, John, was a 27-year town employee who was a highway construction supervisor. He was asked to resign in 2018 after the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board found he “knowingly made material misrepresentations” to get benefits, according to Newsday.

His wife, Jill Guiney, is a former town deputy commissioner of public works.

Following Tiernan’s resignation in 2016, the Town Board under Supervisor Judi Bosworth the next year passed anti-nepotism laws in the town, which included preventing relatives of elected town officials from being employed by the town, prohibiting a town employee from participating in any personnel decision about a relative and banning town employees from supervising a relative, among others.

Morton is as big a lacrosse nut as you’ll find; Clarke said her star attack is always sending her video clips on YouTube (“I told her not to get in trouble with her teachers, she should make sure she does her work!” Clarke laughed) and thinking about her sport.

“I tried tennis and other sports as a kid, but lacrosse was perfect for me,” Morton said.

“From the time I was 6 I was tagging along with older kids and wanting to play every chance I could. The energy of the sport, the connection with teammates, I love everything about it.”

Morton started to hone her outstanding shooting and playmaking abilities with Manhasset PAL and with the Long Island Liberty amateur team starting in third grade.

She practiced her quick-strike shots and fancy moves (an 8th grade behind-the-back goal she scored is still her favorite and is saved on her iPhone) on the Liberty until reaching Manhasset High School and has shone in whatever position Clarke puts her in.

“I feel like a lot of the edge I can get is mental, so much more than physical,” she said. “Just how much time and effort you put into practicing, and thinking about what you can do better, means everything in the game can just come easier. You get in your own way when you think too much during the game.”

Richmond head coach Anne Harrington, whose team is a rising program, is thrilled she’s getting Morton next year.

“Alexis is a high-energy person and player.

We are so excited that she’s a Spider and can’t wait for her to settle in this fall with the team,” Harrington said in a statement.

“I looked into some bigger rah-rah schools,

but I really felt the connection there at Richmond,” Morton said. “I liked the small size of the classes, and the campus, and it just felt like home right away.”

With the state playoffs starting May 20, Morton and her teammates will be looking to take a few more steps and reach states, something they’ve been denied the last three years, either by the opposition or Covid-19 wiping out the 2020 season.

“This group, with the five captains, has really gotten better as the year goes along and Alexis has been a great leader,” Clarke said.

“She’s done so many great things and there are many great things to come for her.”

Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), Martins shifted his focus to becoming Nassau County’s new county executive, following former County Executive Edward Mangano being indicted on federal corruption charges.

Martins ultimately lost that race to Democrat Laura Curran, who served as county executive before being defeated by Republican Bruce

Blakeman this past fall.

Sean Ross Collins-Sweeney, a spokesperson for Kaplan’s campaign, criticized Martins for his previous political affiliations and hopes to have a race that prioritizes the issues facing the 7th Senate District.

“During his time in the Senate, Jack Martins aligned himself with the most extreme elements of his party, refusing to protect a woman’s right to choose, voting against marriage equality, and defending his corrupt, criminal leader, Dean

Skelos,” Collins-Sweeney said in a statement to Blank Slate Media.

Other Democrats previously criticized Martins for defending Skelos, the former state Senate majority leader from Rockville Centre who was convicted of federal corruption crimes in 2015.

Immediately following Skelos’ indictment, Martins said Skelos should be allowed to keep his leadership post. Skelos stepped down a week later. When Martins was running for

county executive in 2017, he expressed some regret that Skelos was not removed from his leadership post sooner.

SUNY Old Westbury’s first Fulbright Scholar SUNY Old Westbury is pleased to announce that Sarah Sadik ’19 has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award for the 2022-23 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Sadik, the first Fulbright Scholar in SUNY Old Westbury history, will study and conduct research in Mauritius, a small island nation off the East coast of Africa.

“We are so proud of Sarah for earning a Fulbright award, and that Old Westbury played a role in her research interests and endeavors,” said SUNY Old Westbury President Timothy E. Sams. “Sarah was an exceptional student who embodied the Old Westbury mission of ‘building a more just world’ and we’re excited to see her excellence, and that of her education, be recognized in this way. I hope to welcome her back to campus after her Fulbright experience so she can help other students realize the global reach they can have.”

Sadik, a 2019 biological sciences graduate, will do field research to identify the current implementation of preventative medicine to address and recognize Intimate-Partner Violence (IPV) in Mauritian Community Health Centers.

She has already partnered with various non-governmental organizations within Mauritius to gain access to shelters supporting women and children impacted by IPV. Following this research, Sadik will shadow medical professionals during patient interactions to identify standard screening procedures

in both city and rural settings and assess the care in the contrasting communities. Her goal is to develop guided interview questions and screening recommendations for medical professionals to use in the future.

A resident of Malverne, Sadik was an active member of SUNY Old Westbury’s Honors College, Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program, and Women in Science and Engineering student organization.

She was profiled in the #OWmade My Day video series during her time at the college. She credits her work with Dr. Manya Mascareno of Biological Sciences, Dr. Sarah Smith of Public Health, and Dr. Rachel Kalish of Sociology for helping her earn this Fulbright scholarship.

Student research Herricks math teacher awarded paper published Congratulations to Herricks senior Esther Min for placing third at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair with her research paper entitled “Agespecific seroprotection after Hepatitis B virus vaccination among Korean American pediatric population in Queens, New York.” Min’s research paper has been published in Human Vaccines & Immuotherapeutics, a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering research into vaccines and immunotherapeutics.

Why are certain demographics not immune to Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection? Min’s project sought to address this question by performing a retrospective chart review on the Korean American pediatric population in Queens, New York as this demographic and location was most impacted by the lack of anti-HBsseroprotection.

She independently collected and analyzed the data which showed that the presence of anti-HBs positivity was affected by age and duration since routine vaccination as an infant (fewer 15–18-year-olds had immunity for HBV).

Herricks announces L.I. Scholar Artist winner Herricks High School is pleased to announce that senior Keneil Soni was honored as one of 20 Long Island Scholar Artists for this school year. His profile will be featured in Newsday for the month of May highlighting his academic and artistic successes in the area of music.

The Scholar Artist program is managed by the Woodburybased Long Island Arts Alliance.

“We are very proud of Keneil and his accomplishments,” said Anissa Arnold, Herricks’ director of fine and performing arts. “The hard work and dedication demanded by his craft is evident. Keneil is an excellent representative of our music program.”

The Long Island Scholar Artist program recognizes student achievement in the arts and academics. Arts educators may nominate students for the honor each March.

Over the summer, a panel of arts educators uses a rigorous process to adjudicate many pieces of submitted works and announce students in late August. Soni was recognized at a kick-off celebration in September and was honored

again at a year-end celebration at the Tilles Center for the Performing on April 28.

Soni began playing the French horn in the fourth grade. Ever since he attended a masterclass session with musician Sarah Willis, Soni fell in love with the art and found a new passion in the creativity and expression of music. Currently, Soni plays in the Juilliard Pre-College orchestra and will be a member of the National Youth Orchestra touring Europe this summer. Soni is also the Class of 2022 valedictorian and will attend Harvard University next year.

The Scholar-Artist Awards program, sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA), recognizes students judged to be “the best of the best” on Long Island in both academics and in the arts. LIAA partners with area universities to offer full scholarships to qualified honorees. The LIAA Scholar-Artist Program is presented by the New York Community Bank Foundation and is produced in cooperation with Newsday.

Manhasset Al Fresco returns this summer Summer is soon approaching and the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 2nd “Manhasset Al Fresco,” a series of six evenings out on the town for outdoor dining, shopping and live entertainment on Plandome Road.

The event will allow for road closures for pedestrians and outdoor dining on Plandome Road and is scheduled to take place throughout the summer, beginning in June, alternating between South Plandome Road and North Plandome Road.

The kickoff night on Sunday, June 12th will encompass businesses on South Plandome Road, with the following event featuring businesses on North Plandome Road.

South Plandome Road will be closed to traffic from Park Avenue to Dennis Street/Northern Blvd on Sunday, June 12, July 10 from 4-9 PM, and Saturday, Aug 14 from 6-9:30 PM for an Al Fresco “Encanto” Movie Night Experience!

North Plandome Road will be closed to traffic from Hillside Avenue to Colonial Parkway on Sunday June 26, July 24 from 4-9 PM and Sep 18 from 3:30-7:30 PM. To add to the festivities, there will be entertainment and appearances by local talent, in addition to the outdoor dining and shopping.

Manhasset Chamber encourages all to come out to support this great community event and support our local businesses. The Manhasset community is invited to stroll on Plandome Road in a safe and festive atmosphere.

The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce will be providing photo opportunities, giveaways and raffles by Shop Manhasset. Bring the kids to “Chalk the Town.” The chamber will have a children’s activity table at most of the event dates.

The first Manhasset Al Fresco event kicks off on South Plandome Road, Sunday June 12 from 4-9 PM with performances by Manhasset High School’s Contemporary Ensemble, directed by Hector Minaya, following performances by Liam Morrisey, Glenn Strange Bad and the Dave Diamond Band.

Elite Auto & Repair will once again host the best Car Show in town, you won’t want to miss it! At 6:30 PM, join in honoring the MHS Boys Basketball NYS Champions! Outdoor dining options include Schout Bay Tavern, Herb & Olive, Villa Milano, Buttercooky Bakery & Cafe, and For Five Coffee.

Just to highlight a few of the other dates, the June 26th event will take place on North Plandome Road, and will consist of Manhasset’s Who’s Got Talent? Children from ages 8-18 can contact shopmanhasset@gmail.com to be included in the schedule.

Talents can include musicians, comedians, magicians, dancers and more. It’s time to show us what you got! The evening will end with a performance by the Hat Trixx Band. Outdoor options include Louie’s Manhasset, Gino’s Pizzeria, Greens Irish Pub, Pita Station and Publicans.

This year’s August event will be an Al Fresco movie night, featuring the movie “Encanto” and

guest appearances and photo ops with Mirabel and Isabela! Performances by Pluckd Studios and Porch Light Band.

The chamber will be bringing back the Can You Escape? Van for the Sept. 18 event, the last of the six Al Fresco nights.

‘We Speak for the Parker’s Igor Israel honored Trees’ exhibit at Clark The Town of North Hempstead invites residents to visit the “We Speak for the Trees” Exhibit at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson. The exhibit is now on display next to the Clark House and will be up until Memorial Day. Local students were asked what

they would say if they were to speak for the trees. More than 3,000 pieces of artwork were created. The project was inspired by the Dr. Seuss book “The Lorax” and taught children about conservation and use of natural resources.

Parker Jewish Institute has announced that Chief Medical Officer Igor Israel was honored Monday by United Hospital Fund as a Quality Improvement Champion.

Dr. Israel was recognized for his efforts to improve quality of care, patient safety, and the patient experience at Parker.

The fourth annual Tribute to Excellence in Health Care event was held in person at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, after two years of virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Dave A. Chokshi, MD, former Commissioner at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, gave the keynote address.

Israel and his fellow honorees— physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and a broad range of other health care workers—were each selected by a senior executive at their institution.

They represent New York City, as well as Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, and were drawn from hospital systems, longterm care facilities, home care organizations, independent practice associations, federally qualified health centers, medical groups, and behavioral health organizations.

“Today’s celebration of health care excellence is part of UHF’s broader work to build aneffective and equitable health care system,” said Dr. Anthony Shih, UHF president, in hisopening remarks. “We have some of the best health care institutions in
