Real estate officials say confident buyers are scooping up historic homes in Beaufort and water-oriented properties on Hilton Head Island. eekman Webb has a soft spot for old homes. “They have character and a sense of mystery that new buildings just don’t have,” he said. “I love them. I’ve spent my whole life working on them.” A long-time Beaufort contractor, Webb has worked on his fair share of historic properties over the years, and he’s also owned a few, too. Now one of those homes is on the market. Webb is selling the historic property at 1001 Bay St. The three-story building at the corner of Bay and Charles streets in downtown Beaufort is 7,500 square feet and currently houses offices and retail space. Lowcountry Real Estate is handling the listing, priced at $1,200,000. Edward Dukes, the firm’s co-owner and managing partner, said the property has been a little bit of everything over the years. “The building has been a private home, it’s housed office space, and it’s seen a number of shops move into the ground floor. It’s in great shape and on a prominent, high-profile corner in Beaufort,” Dukes said. Currently the third floor is vacant, but the space could easily be converted to apartments for the ultimate live/work scenario, he said. Originally in the 1840s by George Elliott as a summer home, the mansion was sold in the late 1850s to Dr. William J. Jenkins of St. Helena Island. The home was used as a hospital during the Civil War, and sold to carpetbagger George Holmes in a tax sale in 1866. The house was operated by the Historic Beaufort Foundation until Webb bought the property in 1994. “It was getting in pretty bad condition. The plaster was falling in a number of rooms, there was no air conditioning, and the plumbing and electrical was very old,” Webb said. Webb breathed new life into the
