Welcome to the Lowcountry
unny and beautiful, South Carolina’s Lowcountry is home to long stretches of sandy beaches, great shopping and some of the best dining in the South. People know this area for its pristine beaches and worldclass golf. And believe us, you’ll find those here. But when visitors arrive with their families to explore the Lowcountry, they find this area to be more hidden gem than polished stone. And they return, again and again, to savor the Lowcountry experience. Indeed, you’ll find a lot more here than tee times and one-ofa-kind boutiques. You’ll find local culinary favorites like Frogmore Stew and fried shrimp burgers. You’ll see living history in the form of Gullah communities like St. Helena Island, where residents have kept alive a language and culture that has roots in the days of slavery. And you’ll drive down quiet country roads that end in spectacular marsh-view sunsets. stay connected • get social • join the conversation Follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and visit us online for the latest in local news and events. www.islandpacket.com • www.beaufortgazette.com

Old Oyster Factory is delicious waterfront dining Some say a delicious seafood dinner is best capped with an indulgent dessert. For others, watching a glowing sun drift below the horizon to a soundtrack of shorebirds and lapping water is treat enough. At the Old Oyster Factory on Hilton Head Island, locals and visitors have been indulging in picturesque waterfront dining and a menu of fresh-caught seafood, juicy steaks, and delicious desserts — including the decadent Chocolate Fantasia — for more than 25 years.

Rules to remember
In the Lowcountry, we have a few laws that might be tricky for folks not familiar with the area. We love sharing our island with visitors, but we also love our beaches and protecting our wildlife. Here are a few laws to know when visiting. No fireworks or fires on the beach It’s illegal to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head Island without a permit. If you’re caught, it’s a misdemeanor and could result in a $500 fine. This confuses tourists at times because it’s legal to sell fireworks in Beaufort County. On that note, building fires for anything other than cooking on Hilton Head beaches is also illegal.
No drinking on the beach
It is illegal to drink alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches. Possession of alcohol or open containers of alcohol could result in a $500 fine.
Don’t take the sea creatures
As a general rule of thumb: don’t touch or take any living creature/ thing from the beaches. It’s illegal to remove, harm or harass any live beach fauna (sea turtles, sand dollars, conchs, starfish, etc.) You could get fined $500. 8
No shark fishing from shore
It’s illegal to bait or fish for shark from the beach, or anywhere 400 yards from the shore. Fishing in designated swimming areas on the beaches is banned from April- Sept. from sun up to sun down.
Know the roundabout rules
It’s pretty much impossible to get around Hilton Head or Bluffton without driving through a roundabout. Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere. Stick with these rules for two lane roundabouts: Yield to drivers in all lanes inside the roundabout Drive the outer lane if you are making a right turn Use the inner lane if you are making a left turn, driving straight through, or making a U-turn (but pay attention to road signs, some roundabouts have different rules) Do not stop or change lanes while in the roundabout.
Don’t feed the gators
When alligators are fed by humans, they associate humans as a food resource, which makes them aggressive. It’s illegal and very dangerous to feed alligators. It could result in a fine or 30 days in jail, or someone getting seriously injured.
No liquor sales on Sundays
While this law won’t get you in trouble, it might be good to know if you’re planning on a Sunday Funday during vacation. You can’t buy hard liquor on Sundays in South Carolina. However, you can buy beer and wine from grocery stores/ gas stations in Beaufort County on Sundays. Here are a few extra laws to keep in mind: Sleeping on the beach is illegal between midnight and 6 a.m. No driving on the beach. No horses on the beach. SUMMER 2017

How to have a great vacation DON’T pass up our seafood
DON’T ignore the beach rules
It doesn’t get any fresher. And many of the restaurant views aren’t bad either.
We love our dogs, but the beach too gets packed for pooches during the height of tourist season. Dogs are not allowed on the beach 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
DO take in our sunsets
Lowcountry sunsets are a beautiful thing. You don’t want to miss one. Pack a picnic, grab a blanket and make your way to the nearest beach, marina, or river for the best view in the house.
DO wear sunscreen
You don’t get macho points for going without sunscreen. And don’t let a cloudy sky deceive you — you’ll still be feeling the burn the next day.
prime sunset spots: page 38-39
DON’T feed the wildlife
Never seen an alligator or dolphin up close? We can fix that. But keep your distance and keep your food to yourself. When you feed a gator or a dolphin, you train them to approach other humans. And no good will come from that. Not to mention, it’s illegal. about our wildlife: page 27
DO know the rules of the road
Renting bikes? Know when you have the right of way and when you don’t. It will save you a lot of headaches. bike information: page 14,40-41
DON’T forget to shop local

DON’T hit your brakes
We have a lot to see in the Lowcountry. But whether you’re approaching a roundabout or think you just spotted a critter nearby, be aware of the vehicles behind you. Keep your eyes on the road and go with the flow of traffic or your vacation could be over before it’s begun. You can always turn around at the next light.
The Lowcountry is brimming with specialty retailers, small boutiques, and family-run establishments offering unique shopping and one-of-a-kind finds. Show our small shops some love — it can make a big difference. shopping spots: page 22, 33, 37
DO take in a day trip
Savannah isn’t far. If you have more time, Charleston is a drive north. Or hop a boat and take a cruise to Daufuskie Island. All three places have loads of activities and history.

‘Mamma Mia!’ is hottest way to cool down
Tickets for “Mamma Mia!” can be purchased by calling the Arts Center Box Office at 843-842-2787 or online at www.artshhi.com. Preview performances June 14-15 are $40 for adults; $33 for children. Regular performances June 16-Aug. 6 are $50 for adults; $41 for children. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is located at 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head Island.
What’s more exhilarating than the music of ABBA, an island, and a summer wedding? “Mamma Mia!” has all of this in the Arts Center’s production, onstage June 14 through Aug. 6. British playwright Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the verge of her wedding, 20-year-old Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but doesn’t know who he is. Sophie discovers her mother’s old diary and finds entries which describe intimate dates with three men (Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin and Harry Bright). Sophie believes one of these men is her father and sends each an invitation written in the name of her mother. Sophie’s quest brings these three very different men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago, and boy, is her mother surprised. Nominated for five Tony Awards, “Mamma Mia!” is a story about love and heartbreak, and the touching story of a mother and daughter, each with a few secrets of their own. The Arts Center’s production, directed by Casey Colgan, will delight and thrill audiences with the fun songs of ABBA. Music includes “Honey, Honey,” “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and more.

History is alive on Daufuskie Island
Daufuskie Island in many areas looks just like it did 200 years ago. With no bridge to the mainland and only a few paved roads, the island is steeped in a simpler time. So when Wick Scurry had the chance to salvage two pieces of history, he took it. Scurry, captain and operator of Calibogue Cruises Tours & Adventures, purchased the Bloody Point Lighthouse and Silver Dew Winery in 2015 and transformed the building and the land. Overhauls included redecorating and
The Bloody Point Lighthouse
repainting the house, as well as tending to the landscape. The lighthouse is now a gift shop and a museum with old photos and island artifacts. Both the lighthouse and winery are now open for tours. One of the centerpieces of the museum includes a 300-year-old wooden canoe that was salvaged from the island’s waters and previously on display at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina. “Bloody Point Lighthouse is one of the most historic things on the island that’s still there,” Scurry said. Originally built on the ocean in 1883 to light the southern end of Daufuskie, the lighthouse consisted of two pieces: the front-range house light and a rear-range skeleton light that sat about a mile inland. Boaters would line up both lights to keep out of the Savannah River, Scurry said. Along with the lighthouse, Scurry is re-opening the Silver Dew Winery and will use grapes grown on the property to

make scuppernong wine. Paying homage to the island’s rich agricultural history, Scurry has also planted Sea Island cotton, Carolina Gold rice, and indigo on the land. “The plan is to pick grapes, make wine, harvest the rice, make dye, and let people pick the cotton if they want to,” Scurry said. “It will be a really cool experience.” To make a reservation with Calibogue Cruises, go to www.enjoydaufuskie.com or call 843-342-8687.

Guidelines to help you have fun and be safe at the beach Sunburn
How fast and how severely you burn depends on genes, prior sun exposure, sun intensity and length of exposure. Severity: First degree (skin redness). Second degree (skin blistering) Prevention: Seek shade mid-morning to midafternoon, use sunblock (SPF 15 or higher). Treatment: Cool wet compresses, topical aloe vera gel, anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen. After sunburn, avoid sun exposure. Because of allergy risk, avoid topical anesthetics containing benzocaine. For severe sunburn, ER visit is advised for treatment with steroids, strong pain meds.
Jellyfish
Can be floating, swimming or beached. Nearly invisible (clear) or brightly colored. Many have spring-loaded glands called nematocysts that sting the skin, releasing venom. Severity: Pain can range from mild to severe. Serious reactions include chest pain, vomiting, shortness of breath or generalized hives. Prevention: Avoid jellyfish in the water and don’t walk barefooted near beached jellyfish. Treatment: Remove undischarged nematocysts by flushing skin with ocean water (NOT tap water or bottled water, which can rupture nematocysts). Scrape off nematocysts with plastic card in downward motion (do not scrape up and down). Apply vinegar compress to soothe. Diphenhydramine capsules (like Benadryl) can help. Apply 1 percent EXPERIENCE
hydrocortisone cream 2-3 times a day. Seek ER treatment for severe reactions like chest pain, vomiting or shortness of breath.
Shells
Shells can have very sharp edges and can leave fragments in wounds. Severity: From minor scrapes to deeper wounds with imbedded debris or shell pieces that can be painful, hard to locate. Prevention: Avoid handling with bare hands. Avoid walking barefoot on shell banks. Treatment: Cleanse minor wounds of foreign particles. Topical antibiotics are recommended. Deeper wounds — go to ER for foreign body evaluation, antibiotics, wound closure and tetanus shot update.
Stingrays
These flat fish have whip-like tails with sharp barbs. If disturbed, barbs can pierce foot/ankle or hand/ wrist. Severity: Barbs inject painful venom that can spread up extremities. Barbs can break off. Prevention: To avoid disturbing stingrays, shuffle feet while wading in surf. Treatment: Soak extremity for 30-90 minutes in hot water to neutralize venom. When pain lessens, cleanse wound, treat with topical antibiotics. Visit ER if pain persists, barb breaks and embeds, wound becomes infected or tetanus immunization is more than 5 years old. look but don’t touch
our ‘wild’ neighbors
alligators
Although they may look slow and awkward, alligators are extremely powerful and can move with a startling burst of speed on land over short distances. Avoid swimming in known gator habitats and be cautious when fishing. When gators are hungry they act on hunting instinct. They don't recognize the difference between a domestic pet, small child and a wild food source. To a gator, a splash potentially means food is in the water. Good to know: It is illegal to feed alligators. It could result in a fine or 30 days in jail.

bottlenose dolphin

loggerhead sea turtle
Bottlenose dolphins share our coastal waters. This means people can easily view them in the wild, but it also puts dolphins at risk of human-caused injuries or death. Feeding dolphins makes them aggressive toward humans and disrupts their natural feeding process. It also causes them to follow boats, leading to more accidents.
We really love our sea turtles in the Lowcountry, and the Loggerhead is South Carolina's official reptile. We love them so much that there is an entire chapter of municipal code dedicated to sea turtle protection. Artificial light confuses sea turtles and puts them in danger (this includes flashlights).
Good to know: Feeding, attempting to feed, and harassment of marine mammals in the wild is illegal. If convicted it could cost you $20,000 in fines or a year in prison.
Good to know: Artificial light along any Beaufort County oceanfront is prohibited from 10 p.m. until dawn. The "lights out" restriction lasts from May to Oct. 31
60 years later, Coligny still heart of Hilton Head
Norris Richardson first brought his family to Hilton Head Island in 1955. He built the island’s first grocery store which, over the next 60 years, expanded and grew into Coligny Plaza. SUMMER 2017
“There was just a single lane of dirt road on the island when my father, Norris Richardson, arrived with an eye to build the island’s first grocery store,” recalls Coligny Plaza owner JR Richardson, whose father brought him to Hilton Head Island in 1955. “There was no bridge so we had to ship all the materials to build Forest Beach Market by barge.” JR added with a chuckle, “One of our first customers was Charles Fraser, a young man who was, at that time, building this place he called Sea Pines.” Over the next 60-plus years, Forest Beach Market would expand, forming the downtown for the tiny island. The area featured a barbershop, ice cream parlor, the island’s first pharmacy, and the south end’s first post office. The area was renamed Coligny and has continued the story of local store ownership throughout its history. Stores at Coligny, most of which are owned by Hilton Head Islanders, carry everything from one-of-a-kind finds to brand-name fashions. The large selection of restaurants offer up the best food and live music on the island. The center stage at Coligny also features entertainment seven nights a week through the summer. With more than 60 shops and restaurants, locals and visitors can “Find IT” all at Coligny. EXPERIENCE

Before it became a film site, it was a destination for writers whose work was later adapted for the big screen. Although the property is private, fans stand outside the iron gates to snap photos of the mansion made famous by Hollywood.

Bicycles
Hilton Head is praised as a bicyclist’s paradise, with more than 60 miles of shared pathways and 12 miles of shoreline where you can cruise smoothly across the beach. Here are laws every driver and biker should know. Right-of-way laws are tricky at crosswalks
South Carolina law indicates that motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crosswalks, but it’s not always the case, depending on who arrives at the intersection first. This means: Motorists have the right-of-way at crossings over folks waiting to cross, but must yield to bicyclists/ pedestrians that they encounter who may have already entered the crosswalk.
Pedestrians stay left, cyclists stay right
Cyclists who want to use the road have the right to do so, but they must ride with the flow of traffic, according to South Carolina law. Pedestrians, on the other hand, are safer on the left side of the pathways and roads, where they can easily see approaching traffic. 40
Bicyclists must follow all signs
Those little stop signs next to bike paths are not for decoration. This means: Pathway signs are official traffic control devices as defined in the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and state law requires bicyclists and pedestrians to comply with all official traffic control devices and applicable laws concerning right-of-way.
Light up your bike
Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you decide to ride at night, South Carolina law says you must have a front light and a red reflector. Some drivers have enough trouble seeing bikes during the day, so don’t assume they see you at night. That goes for pedestrians, too. This means: If you’re biking, walking, or running anywhere on Hilton Head at night, do whatever you can to be visible. EXPERIENCE
Communicate while sharing the roads
South Carolina law requires cyclists on the road to use hand signals when turning or stopping. If you’re riding on the road, make eye contact with drivers, be alert ,and predictable. On pathways, bicyclists should communicate with approaching pedestrians and be aware of their surroundings and always pass on the left. This means: When approaching slower pathway users from behind, it’s best to give an audible signal, such as ringing your bell or calling out, “Passing on your left,” to let other pathway users know of your approach and intentions.
Be courteous
It’s against the law for motorists to harass or throw things at cyclists, and it’s also dangerous, rude, and could cost you a $250 fine or 30 days in jail. SUMMER 2017

fish haul creek park
Fish Haul Creek Park is a remote 16-acre park featuring a maritime forest, wetlands, a salt marsh and a beach, complete with an observation boardwalk out to the salt marsh and a shaded trail that winds through the live oaks to the sandy shore of Port Royal Sound. The sand and mud of the tidal flats provide a feeding playground for shore birds and marine creatures, while the ebb and flow of the tide alters the beach constantly. At low tide, you’ll see local explorers focused on clams, fish, shells or a quiet walk. The history: As you admire the view and varied habitats, consider the park's history: You’re standing on ground that Native Americans called home over 3,000 years ago; and in 1862, Mitchelville was founded here, built and self-governed by freed slaves — the first such community in America.
