IT’S TIME TO DECK THE HALLS Whether freshly cut, conveniently sitting at the supermarket or out of a box, Christmas trees aren’t hard to find this time of year. One of the best ways for the family to get into the holiday spirit is to pile into the car and drive to a Christmas tree farm where they can pick out their favorite tree, cut it down themselves and take it home to decorate with love. When picking out a Christmas tree, there are several things to think about besides “Where can I find one?” But, don’t worry, we can answer that too. Page 8-9

7 things to think about before you pick a tree BY JOAN MCDONOUGH
jmcdonough@islandpacket.com
When picking out a Christmas tree, there are several things to think about besides “Where can I find one?” and “How do I cut down a tree, anyway?” This checklist of questions to ask yourself (or your parents or your better half) should help you find just the right tree for your home. HOW BIG SHOULD THIS TREE BE? You’ll want to do a bit of measuring before you head out to the farm or the store to pick up a Christmas tree. Think height and width. Measure from floor to ceiling and consider what, if anything, you’ll use to top your
tree. Also think about how tall your tallest tree decorator is or possibly how much of a boost a step ladder can give you. This should help steer clear of using a mini trampoline to fix the star on top of the tree. If the tree is too wide for the room, you may have people brushing into it, knocking needles off, or fewer places to sit down if a chair has to be sacrificed for the tree. Trimming a tree down too much can make it look scruffy. Try to get one that truly fits your home. HOW STURDY DOES IT NEED TO BE? Think about your ornaments. If quite a few of them are fairly heavy, a tree with thicker branches will serve you better than a delicate tree. If most of
your ornaments are made of Popsicle sticks and macaroni, a less sturdy tree should work just fine. Jerry Youngblood, who owns A&A Christmas Trees with his wife Dianne, said Fraser firs tend to be sturdy enough for heavier ornaments. They’re his favorite even though the trees, native to the mountains further north, don’t grow in the Lowcountry. HOW SOFT DO I NEED THE NEEDLES TO BE? If there are youngsters in your home or if there will be some visiting, you might want to consider getting a tree with softer needles. The National Christmas Tree Association has a cheat sheet to help folks get to know different varieties of trees.
HOW LONG IS THIS TREE GOING TO LIVE? A lot of that depends on you, according to The Family Tree Christmas Tree Farm owner Milledge Morris. Trees need water. Some larger ones can drink more than one gallon per day, Morris said. He recommended keeping your Christmas tree outside in the shade in a tree stand with water for as long as possible before it’s brought inside to decorate. Too much heat and not enough humidity can strangle trees, and they’ll start to die. Once a tree goes downhill, there’s no going back, he said. A tree can last anywhere from two or three weeks to two or three months depending on how you want to care for it.
.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
HOW MUCH SPACE DO WE NEED UNDER THE TREE? If the plan is to fit presents or a little train under the tree, you may need to select a tree with some space at the bottom. Some tree stands even need a little extra trunk and fewer lower branches, Milledge pointed out. Consult with Santa and the family on where the presents will sit before heading out to snag a tree.
BALSAM FIR: These needles are ¾ to 1½ in. in length and last a very long time. This tree has a dark-green appearance and retains its fragrance throughout the Christmas season.
WHERE IS THIS GOING TO SIT IN MY HOUSE? Definitely not too close to anything that could catch fire. Also keep it away from any heat vents — when the tree gets too hot, it will start to die. Some folks like to have their tree in a window, some in a corner, some surrounded by furniture. Morris said one family on Fripp Island even hangs their giant tree from a vaulted ceiling each year. “Get what you want and have fun,” he said, no matter how or where you like your tree. IS MY PET GOING TO WREAK HAVOC ON THIS TREE? That depends on your furry friend, but there’s really only one way to find out ... . But the ASPCA offers tips on making sure Fido and Fluffy are safe this holiday season.
Common tree characteristics FRASER FIR: The Fraser fir branches turn slightly upward. They have good form and needle-retention. They are dark blue-green in color. They have a pleasant scent, and excellent shipping characteristics as well. DOUGLAS-FIR: These soft needles are dark green to blue green and approximately 1 to 1 ½ in. in length. Douglas-fir needles radiate in all directions. When crushed, these needles have a sweet fragrance. They are one of the top Christmas tree species in the U.S.
SCOTCH PINE: Approximately 1 in. in length, these needles don’t fall when they’re dry, providing excellent needle retention. The color is a bright green. A common Christmas tree in the U.S., the scotch pine has an excellent survival rate, has great keepability and will remain fresh throughout the holiday season. LEYLAND CYPRESS: The most popular Christmas tree in the southeast, the Leyland cypress is dark green-gray in color and has very little aroma. Because it is not in the pine or fir family, it does not produce sap. VIRGINIA PINE: These branches are stout and woody and respond very well to trimming. The tree is small to medium in size and its foliage becomes extremely dense. The Virginia pine continues to be one of the more popular Christmas trees in the south. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Looking for a Christmas tree? There are options BY JOAN MCDONOUGH
jmcdonough@islandpacket.com
Whether freshly cut, conveniently sitting at the supermarket or out of a box, Christmas trees aren’t hard to find this time of year. As soon as Thanksgiving is over, Christmas tree farms like A&A Christmas Trees in Okatie and The Family Tree Christmas Tree Farm on Lady’s Island open up for holiday business. Many families still prefer to go out and cut down their own tree as part of the experience. For many families, a real tree is part of the tradition. The Family Tree owner Milledge Morris is a full supporter of having a real Christmas tree in the house. He said the smell of cedar never fails to bring him back to his first Christmas tree that his
dad cut down from the woods. “The smell just sticks with you.” In a rush to get a tree? Many grocery stores and home improvement stores also will have a selection of pre-cut trees sitting outside the store. No time to take care of a tree? Go artificial. They don’t have that pine smell, but there’s less care and cleanup involved. Artificial trees are available bare, fully decorated and everything in between, so if you can’t stand untangling those lights you put away last year, pick out an artificial tree that just needs to be plugged in to light up your home. Any way you choose to celebrate, it’s sure to be merry.

Holiday safety tips for your pet ASPCA
www.aspca.org
The holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, be sure to steer pets clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations. Oh, Christmas Tree: Anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water — which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset — from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria, and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe. Avoid mistletoe and holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to
suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-asjolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet. Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, lightcatching “toy” that’s easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable orna-
ments can damage your pet’s mouth and digestive tract. Skip the sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which a pet will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans. Leave the leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills. Careful with cocktails: If your celebration includes adult beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.

Festive tips to set a holiday mood at home StatePoint
It’s the most festive time of the year. Be sure to fill your home with the classic scents, sounds and sights of the holiday season in the following ways. START A HOLIDAY COOKIE TRADITION Bring the family together by baking cookies. Not only will it fill the home with a scrumptious aroma, it’s a fun activity that can involve everyone. Let kids get creative and decorate their own batch. In the spirit of giving, make some extras to share with friends, neighbors, teachers, coworkers and more. SING CAROLS Carol from the comfort of home. To experience a
sense of community, organize an at-home holiday sing-along. An elegant, compact digital piano such as Casio’s Privia PX-770 is great for this seasonal tradition. Record your performances for posterity using its two-track MIDI recorder. DISPLAY GREETINGS For a festive feel, creatively decorate your home using your holiday cards with greetings from loved ones. String cards together and hang them in the doorway, decorate the fridge or display them on the mantle. STOCK UP ON SEASONAL SCENTS Frosty pine, sugar cookies, cinnamon and more. Fill your home with the spirit of the holidays using
essential oils and candles of classic holiday scents. Or, keep it natural and boil cinnamon sticks with orange and cloves. ENJOY YOUR FAVORITE FLICKS From classic dramas to contemporary comedies, the holiday genre is eclectic. Set up a home theater and enjoy your favorite films with some hot chocolate under a cozy blanket. To get an upgraded movie theater-like experience at home, check out the projectors from Casio’s LampFree line-up, which offer brilliant images. At your next holiday party, consider projecting movies silently while playing holiday music for an extra boost of cheer.
