Letter from
the Founders Maxeys on Sabbatical
Pam and I are so fortunate to have been able to attract outstanding colleagues who are ready to take the helm. We have been talking to our leadership team for several years about the opportunity to take a full-year sabbatical. Starting January 2017 we are sailing and traveling the world. Pam has gracefully transferred her role as Director of Admissions to the super capable shoulders of Taylor Hoffman (Island School Spring 2006). In October with full support of our board of directors we promoted Dr. Edd Brooks, ten year veteran and creator of our now globally recognized shark research efforts. Edd will be acting CEO of the Bahamas operation in my absence. I recognize the contribution of all of my colleagues who have served along the way, and celebrate what we’ve achieved together. There is always concern for any organization as management transfers from the founders. Our focus on sustainability has to be more than how we live and our fiscal outlook; we also need to be invested in human resources and the next generation of leadership. This sabbatical is part of our comprehensive effort to make sure that our collective work will last generations. It is also important for Pam and me to be able to take some time away from the daily operations and look out over the horizon and re-energize. We will stay connected and land back at the Cape frequently. It will be fun to share our journey and help build new partnerships around the world.

the Foundation’s Executive Director Just a few days ago an Island School parent named Mike came back for the ten year celebration of research at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. I asked him why he decided not only to show up with his son Peter, but also give generously to support us. Mike said that his father, a general physician from upstate New York, brought his family to Eleuthera in 1968 - the only international family vacation they ever had - and it left an impression. About 5 years ago Mike brought his own family to Eleuthera, where Peter learned about The Island School. Peter’s passion for marine science was fostered here as a student, and it was a special chance to return as an alumnus to hear about the new sharks, rays, bonefish, aquaponics, turtle, and plastics research, to hear Dr. Edie Widder talk about her explorations in the deep ocean and spur our community to apply scientific thinking and optimism wherever they might journey. Mike also said that he never really understood why his father originally picked Eleuthera - until now. Over the rake and scrape music of the Rum Runners band he said that his father clearly meant to make sure his son and grandson would connect and reconnect to this place, these people, and that it would bring them to this school and create meaning for their family nearly 50 years later. It brings people together. The Fall 2016 students are departing the island as I write this, and their connection to Eleuthera has just started. They are part of the family now. As you bring your family together this holiday season, I hope you will think like Mike’s dad did: come back and stay connected - to celebrate the future we will make possible together.
Little did I know when I first set foot on Eleuthera in 2005 that nearly 12 years later I would be sitting down writing a letter as acting CEO of this life-changing and world-changing organisation. My journey began as a volunteer dive instructor with a side job painting preservative on the wet lab timber frame – back then the timber frame was the only physical indication that there was such a thing as the Cape Eleuthera Institute. Fast forward to present and Annabelle and I have added an almost complete house, two dogs, two kids and a PhD. And with my eldest son’s enrolment at the Early Learning Center, the latter two items add substance to Chris’s favourite boast that we educate from pre-kindergarten through PhD. During my tenure I have witnessed near exponential growth of our various divisions and now our capacity to inspire, educate, investigate and engineer is greater than it has ever been before. In the last decade we have quadrupled our workforce to 147 staff, interns and graduate students and trebled the area of our built space to 95,000 sq ft spread between 30 buildings, all contained within a 22 acre campus. This growth has been organic, and has allowed us to create a community of bright young educators, engineers, scientists, farmers, carpenters, boat captains and students collaborating on real world solutions to real world problems. It truly does take a village and that is exactly what has been created on Cape Eleuthera. We are no longer an idea, or an experiment, or even a proof of concept any more. Chris’s and Pam’s vision from 18 years ago has truly become a reality. So back to the present day and the question of what is the next as Chris and Pam depart on their 12 month sabbatical? The reality is that this just the next step of transition away from an organisation entirely reliant on its founders, to a mature entity that will ensure Chris and Pam’s vision survives for decades to come. I am honoured to lead our community during this important time and am humbled by the support, wisdom and enthusiasm offered by every facet of our community. It is a daunting task ahead, however, as an organisation we continue to attract some of the most committed, and talented people I have ever encountered from all over the world. I am confident that this incredible human capital will ensure that our future is as bright as our past. Edd Brooks

researcher, Dr. Daniel Siegel. Similar to how a healthy eating guide would suggest that we all need essential nutrients as part of a healthy diet, the Healthy Mind Platter suggests that we require seven essential daily activities for overall wellness. This year we are encouraging students to reflect on their personal Healthy Mind Platter and to regularly consider which activities they need more and less of in order to be at their healthiest.
NEWS
We continue to encourage students to gain a global perspective through international travel, camps, and programming. Six grade 9 students are currently involved in applying to US boarding schools and are in the process of completing applications and taking the SSAT. These students just returned from a boarding school fair in Nassau where they met admissions representatives. The students are preparing for a January trip focusing on school tours and interviews. Almost half of DCMS students applied for the available 2017 camp openings. There are 21 students applying to attend camps in the US, Nassau and on Eleuthera. Through these experiences, students at DCMS continue to grow as leaders and to be young ambassadors for the country.
Learning outside the classroom walls is a focal point at DCMS and the schedule has been redesigned to allow for greater exploration of Eleuthera.
Deep Creek Middle School recently celebrated its 15th anniversary and recognized our Nassau donors and government officials with a gathering at the home of longtime supporters and Board members, Stephen and Alessandra Holowesko. It was an honor to toast all the dedicated members of the community and share stories from points along our 15-year journey. Four of the past principals were present along with strong alumni and parent representation to cheer on the great work that continues. Learning outside the classroom walls is a focal point at DCMS and the schedule has been redesigned to allow for greater exploration of Eleuthera. The academic week includes a newly integrated block taught by two teachers per grade that is often out in the field. The School Without Walls program has been spread throughout the year and consists of three separate sessions that culminate in a final community presentation. Learning to swim has been the focus of Term 1 Physical Education with two days in the water each week utilizing many different beaches in the area. Each teacher is changing the way they access our island to make the learning happen. Also new this year is a commitment to teach and honor wellness at DCMS. An important tool we use is called the Healthy Mind Platter. This tool was created by a medical doctor and brain

• Deep Creek Primary School Garden Project: This program meets bi-weekly, but is punctuated by special events drawing the greater CEIS community en masse for a significant larger objective. Since September, this program has served 26 community participants and accrued 23 staff volunteer-hours. • The Open Learning Center (OLC): The OLC has serves a group of approximately 8 community children of various ages supporting literacy, numeracy and homework completion. This center is available twice a week and has accumulated 58 student hours since September.

Throughout the school year, regular outreach programs are offered to the children of Deep Creek. These efforts are tracked both in terms of the number of community members who participate and the number of volunteer staff hours.

The last five years of fundraising success started with planning: what do we want to achieve? To have the most impact and make us more resilient, a goal was set to raise a total of $15 million divided equally between enhancing and supporting our schools and science research programs, building out the engineering and marine research campus, and growing the endowment. You helped us exceed the goal by 50%! And it is immediately making a big difference.
The Deep Creek Middle School celebrates its 15th year in 2016-2017. The change in life trajectory for each student and family thanks to the small class sizes and experiential curriculum is measured not only in test scores and confidence, but the investment these young leaders are making in South Eleuthera now as graduates and citizens. You, along with the Government of the Bahamas and other local foundations help underwrite the $400,000 per year necessary on top of tuition receipts needed to make this experience possible.
Our most important investment each year supports scholarships. You offered families over $3 million in financial aid over the last 5 years. You’ve helped make Island School affordable for about 30% of each Island School class, and provided access for dozens of students through our CityBridge
