The Vision and Future

from our Founders

The 40th semester gathered in the Boathouse with their families and Mike Cortina, Fall '02 and Director, Center for Sustainable Development, came forward to introduce his engineering teams. Mike shared his long history with The Island School returning every Summer through College to work as an intern. He then smiles and shares a story from early in the Fall. He was washing dishes next to a student and she asks, Hey Mike, what semester were you in? Mike responds with pride, I was Fall 2002. She returns his smile and shares that she was born in 2002. The Island School is about to turn 20 and is now older than all of our students. Many of our alumni who are now back leading the charge and serving on our Board were students before most of the current students were born. Mike continued to share that his engineering team working with our students is focused on our central question, how can we live well in this place? We have been working hard to answer this question over the past 20 years and building a campus that serves as a text book and a model. This past Spring, the Bahamian Prime Minister visited our campus with four members of his cabinet. They came in search of answers for how they might rebuild Ragged Island devastated by Hurricane Irma. Beyond the renewable energy, constructed wetland wastewater treatment, aquaponics food production and biofuel production, there are other ways that the big world is watching and learning from our model. The Island School now serves as a model for how we might live better and learn better on this island planet. Island School is a founding school for the Mastery Transcript Consortium, a movement to shift away from standardized tests and letter grades to celebrate life skills and habits of mind that have the potential to change the way we teach and learn, change the way school happens. Today I stood in front of our Fall Semester and the entire Deep Creek Middle School (DCMS) as we gathered to celebrate the final projects. I could see the Bahamian students sit taller in their chairs as I shared news from my recent visit with the Minister of Education. The Minister with a pound of his fist on the table told me that the Deep Creek Middle School is the laboratory school for The Bahamas. As the public school system moves to test more, DCMS launches students on an experiential journey ripping down the walls of the school. School without Walls is a program where all of our DCMS students are based with us at The Island School fully immersed in the environment, learning to swim and snorkel and dive, falling in love with the beauty of their island home. I shared a dream that I hope to be central to our new site master plan. We want the Deep Creek Middle School with us on our campus moving from the audience to the stage. We hope to build a new circle for The Island School on land recently gifted where we can demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and diversity. I turned to The Island School students ready to present their research and engineering projects. I reminded them of the challenges and value that comes from walking down a new path of discovery. I reminded them that their team effort could not be graded as there was nobody who knew the answer to the questions: Can we put a camera on a juvenile green turtle and witness never before seen behaviors? Might we be able to turn casuarina into cloth? Do Oceanic White Tip sharks pup in the Exuma Sound? Can our campus become the first fully self-sufficient renewable energy micro-grid? It has always been our mission to make the semester journey authentic and meaningful and assess our teams the way Google might assess a team. How are you collaborating and leading and delivering clear outcomes? I ended my address with a mandate that comes from John Dewey in the early years of the 20th century, Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. I hope that you all can take pride in where we are heading 20 years down this journey just a little older than our students, creating models that are effecting change out in the world. It will be great to gather with so many in Boston on January 5th to celebrate. Respectfully,

Through the Years

Q&A with CEO, Edd Brooks Q: Year hired at IS: A: Fall 2005

Q: How did you first get involved with The Island School? A: I chased a beautiful Italian all the way from The Maldives who took a job teaching science at Island School. Timeline of Organizational Growth CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

Deep Creek Middle School

Prior to the founding of The Island School, Chris hosted student groups on Eleuthera. What started out as a master's research thesis, and a set of student field trips then became a full academic campus with semester students the following year.

1996

From the beginning, our community at Cape Eleuthera has modeled a shift toward a more livable future. For all who have come to live and learn at Cape Eleuthera, there has been an opportunity to discover that people can make a difference – that we can effect positive change through the way we live, and we have and will continue to.

The Early Learning Center opened to support the vision that students Pre-K through PhD can all learn from our teaching philosophy on campus.

The Deep Creek Middle School was founded as an independent school for local Bahamian students in grades seven through nine located on the southern end of the island of Eleuthera.

Spring 2006

In August, the Cape Eleuthera Institute had the opportunity to explore new depths with the M/V Alucia.

Expanding Research with the Alucia Vessel BY: Brendan Talwar and Megan Gilbert

Fully equipped with top-of-the-line scientific tools, including two submersibles, the Alucia afforded our researchers and visiting scientists the opportunity to conduct scientific research in the unexplored depths of the Exuma Sound. The world-renowned luxury research vessel spent much of the expedition anchored off of Lighthouse Point, where a narrow undersea bank stretches from Eleuthera to Half Moon Caye. This area, known as “The Bridge,” is rich with marine life near the surface, but what lay hidden in the twilight zone remained shrouded in darkness until now. Before sinking to the seafloor, it was necessary to map the region in order to select the most promising dive sites for exploration. With the technology aboard the M/V Alucia, we were able to map the incredible bathymetry of the area, which included two dramatic ridges that extended out from the Bridge into the Atlantic Ocean and Exuma Sound on either side. Both created dramatic scenes from the sub as it illuminated peaks and valleys that were, at some points, over 100m tall. We are looking forward to submitting these data to the Bahamian government to improve vessel navigation and safety in the area. After mapping the region, we were able to pursue numerous scientific objectives, the most exciting of which included an attempt to tag bluntnose sixgill sharks from the submersible, Nadir. This prehistoric species has been tagged at the surface, but exhibits an irregular pattern of behavior in the days immediately following their capture. Because these sharks spend their lives in deep, cool water, this change in behavior may be attributed to the process of being captured

and brought to the surface, during which they are exposed to different levels in pressure, light and temperature. The only way to validate what we think is “normal” behavior for the species is to attach a satellite tag without ever exposing the animal to the stress of capture. We worked with a team of engineers and technology experts to design a speargun that could be attached to the front of the submersible and triggered from within the sub to release a tag at depth. To ensure that the tagging event was safe for the bluntnose sixgills, the team was briefed on the exact conditions that were to be met in order to release a tag. The tag needed to be planted in the white muscle tissue beneath the dorsal fin of these animals, which means that the animal needed to be positioned at a certain height and angle in reference to the submersible in the water. Unfortunately, no tags were released, but the attempts prove that tagging animals from a submersible in the future is possible and we remain hopeful that we have another shot at a successful deployment in the future.

...but what lay hidden in the twilight zone remained shrouded in darkness until now." 13

Outreach Efforts with Lighthouse Point

Supporting students to build connections between cultural heritage, the environment and economic opportunities at Lighthouse Point BY: Candice Brittan 15

THE FUTURE

For The Island School, there might not be a more sacred place on the planet than Lighthouse Point Beach. The majority of our graduates have paddled over 20 nautical miles to cross from the Exuma Coast to the Atlantic. Even on the calmest day, the competing currents slap waves together that crest far overhead. The vast undeveloped beach that stretches north for miles is the site of our 48-hour solo where our young leaders get time to reflect on their journey that looks out over the horizon beyond their sea kayak expedition, beyond their Island School Semester, to reflect on the bigger questions of what they want to do with their time on this ocean planet. Many write their college essays about how their solo on Lighthouse Beach helped them understand how to bring forth their best self. In this fight to save Lighthouse, we have been careful not to shout our personal and The Island School professional connections. Our primarily expat lens cannot be what saves Lighthouse. The only way to

save Lighthouse and other pristine seascapes is to have local Bahamians champion the value of these places; this value deserves to have economic as well as environmental impact. We raise the Bahamian flag and sing the national anthem each morning and have built a local middle school and yet even after 20 years we remain respectful visitors in this great country.

Pre and post assessments were administered before and after each trip and we documented a 16 percent increase in knowledge. We have and will continue to support children from Eleuthera to experience and learn about the cultural heritage, marine and terrestrial environment and economic value of Lighthouse Point through educational programming.

This semester we created a field trip experience at Lighthouse Point for school students on Eleuthera that connects children to nature. Through culture, heritage, building connections and exploring the surrounding ecosystem we promote environmental stewardship. Over the course of the Fall 2018 Semester six Island School students teamed up with our Outreach department to lead local primary school field trips to the iconic area that is Lighthouse Point.

We celebrate our expanding local partnership with One Eleuthera as we recently delivered a course at Center for Training and Innovation (CTI) training local electricians in the art of renewable energy installation. The future is bright no matter what happens at Lighthouse and yet there is so much opportunity to invest right now in a more meaningful and more sustainable future. The evidence is clear that there can be greater and more lasting economic opportunity for South Eleuthera and The Bahamas as a nation if there is a shift towards educational opportunities and lower impact ecotourism where the unique culture and natural beauty of this island nation is more fully appreciated.

So far this semester 88 children from Eleuthera have participated in field trips to Lighthouse Point, for 78 of these students it was their first visit to the spectacularly beautiful landscape.

FUTURE OF

ACADEMICS

BY: Ashley Waldorf and Taylor Hoffman

The team has to lean into different leadership styles and skill sets in order to perform. This process organically celebrates many of the skills identified by Tony Wagner and other thought leaders that are essential to success in this rapidly changing 21st-century workplace. If we truly want to be able to launch leaders capable of effecting positive change then we have to be willing to focus our academic journey on the real needs of the extended biotic community. In order to meet this goal, we are committed to continuous refinement and evolution of our programming. Fall of 2019 will see the implementation of our next evolution.

If we truly want to be able to launch leaders capable of effecting positive change then we have to be willing to focus our academic journey on the real needs of the extended biotic community." Since its inception, The Island School has been focused on celebrating student leadership involved in authentic journeys of discovery. Something truly magical happens when students become colleagues and team members on a path where they are challenged to answer novel questions and design solutions. It is sometimes messy when you do not know the outcome, there is a failure, and a need for course corrections.

17

THE FUTURE

The three aspects of the evolution:

1. Enhancing our interdisciplinary process Students are engaged in all disciplines as described in the curriculum guide, though class periods and performance tasks are interdisciplinary in nature. In one class period, a student may be studying a topic, such as sustainable interdependence, through the lens of Marine Ecology, Histories, and Literature and Writing at the same time.

2. Celebrating competencies Along with a traditional transcript, students are provided a supplementary transcript called the Holistic Achievement Portfolio that communicates competency-specific growth and proficiency based on evidence collected during non-academic programming throughout the semester.

3. Problem-solving journey Our unique research journey is shifting to an interdisciplinary problem-solving journey. By charging the students with developing, conducting, and communicating results from meaningful project-based initiatives, the program epitomizes the school’s vision and mission of creating opportunities for students to produce work that has important consequences for the local, scientific, and global communities. THE FUTURE

Scholarships and partnerships supported by The Osprey Leadership Circle enable The Island School to strategically expand our accessibility to high-potential students from a diverse set of family backgrounds. We find that in providing transformative growth opportunities to these deserving young people, we expand their worlds while immeasurably enriching our own. The Island School Summer and Semester program are proud to work in collaboration with the following partnerships.

Supporting Students through Osprey Leadership Circle The Osprey Leadership Circle is a shared effort by parents who believe in the positive impact of The Island School experience on young people and want to make it accessible, affordable, and more diverse. By joining, you ensure The Island School experience is possible for families who seek to take this extraordinary leap of faith. Leaving the nest is not easy: from applying to packing, the once-a-week phone calls, and the reentry into ‘normal’ life– there aren’t any guarantees at any step of the way. That leap is even more challenging for families who depend on support to make the program affordable. To continue to attract the best students who will take away the most from this experience, make a strong community, and give back after they leave, we need robust scholarship support. Through the Osprey Leadership Circle, you will help secure our annual commitment to make

this transformative experience possible for all families. The Osprey Leadership Circle will help us reach our goal of 30% of our student receiving support and establish an annual gift of $600,000 enabling a range of scholarships at The Island School.
