On April 19 1993, an FBI siege of the Branch Davidian compound in central Texas ended in a massive fire and the deaths of 74, including their leader David Koresh, a story told in a series premiering this week on the newly rechristened Paramount Network (formerly known as Spike TV).

“Waco,” a six-part drama series debuting Wednesday, Jan. 24, recounts the tragedy that began when agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms conducted a raid on Koresh (Taylor Kitsch, “Friday Night Lights,” “X Men Origins: Wolverine”) and his devoted followers that turned into the longest gun battle in U.S. law enforcement history, resulting in the deaths of four ATF agents, six civilians and the wounding of dozens of others.

A 51-day stand-off ensued and ended with the fateful FBI raid that left scores dead, among them Koresh. Others there that day include his wife Rachel (Melissa Benoist, “Supergirl”); her sister Michelle (Julia Garner, “Ozark”), who also married Koresh and bore him a child; Steve Schneider (Paul Sparks, “House of Cards”), Koresh’s second in command; his wife Judy (Andrea Riseborough, “Bloodline”), who was also a Koresh spouse and child bearer; and Wayne Martin (Demore Barnes, “12 Monkeys”), the Davidians’ lawyer.

The series is based on the book “A Place Called Waco” by Davidian survivor David Thibodeau (played in the series by Rory Culkin, “Columbus”), and also stars Michael Shannon (“Elvis & Nixon”) as FBI negotiator Gary Noesner, and John Leguizamo (“Stealing Cars”) as ATF agent Jacob Vazquez.

For prepare for his role, Kitsch did a deep dive into the character, studying Koresh for four months, losing 30 pounds, growing his hair long, donning the clothes and learning to sing and play guitar like Koresh did. Soon, he found the voice of a guy he describes as “very enigmatic, charismatic” begin to emerge.

“I really do think how he’s incredibly smart and he was incredible at having the pulse in that compound,” the actor says. “You know, you always want to study why people would follow him, literally give their lives and families and wives ... . He was a master manipulator and he would test these people and he also would put his heart on his sleeve and could be very sweet at times but also very demanding and vigilant.

“I mean, he had it all,” he continues, “in that sense of as an actor you get to go and play that full spectrum and I love that. I love that the deeper I got, the more you really try to understand, the more shades you could really show of him.”

The series’ exterior scenes were filmed at a scale replica of the Branch Davidian compound constructed outside Santa Fe, N.M. For Benoist, who grew up 200 miles away from Waco in Houston at the time the events unfolded, filming at the stark rural location proved to be an eerie and overwhelming experience.

“It kind of just looms there,” she says. “And we had already spent a couple of weeks in character filming scenes inside the compound in the room where Koresh would do his sermons, and I mean it was just a lot of emotions. And I wasn’t there the day they burned it down but they burned the entire building down and I heard it was quite moving.”

“I don’t think anyone really knows the truth and just how tragic it is,” she continues, “and how much these people suffered and how they didn’t deserve what happened to them. And seeing the building absolutely brought all those feelings to the surface.”

History, it is said, is written by the winners and usually from the points of view of presidents, kings and historians. As for the ordinary people who experience landmark events, their stories largely go untold.

But in “We’ll Meet Again,” a six-episode documentary series airing Tuesdays beginning Jan. 23 on PBS (check local listings), their tales are front and center. Executive produced and reported by former NBC News anchor Ann Curry (“Today”), the hourlong series not only details the personal experiences of those who lived through historical events such as World War II, 9/11, the Vietnam War and the eruption of Mount St. Helens, but also reunites them years later with those with whom they went through these ordeals.

“We rarely really get to understand history from the point of view of people who are actually on the front lines,” Curry told a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif., “with no power to change what’s happening to them, and who, because of these adversities, have to find a way to survive and to support each other and to get through it. In Tuesday’s opener, we are introduced to Reiko, a JapaneseAmerican woman who as a child in 1942 was sent to an internment camp, who hopes to find the classmate who stood by her in the face of anti-Japanese sentiment at the outset of World War II. More than 70 years later, she is brought together with her friend, Mary Peters, in a moving reunion that brought tears to all involved, including Curry and her production team.

“Everyone, we were just so moved by these moments,” Curry says. “And I think we’re moved because they speak to all of us as human beings. It is part of who we are, of how we connect.”

Zimmern keeps it local in the Season 12 premiere of ‘Bizarre Foods’ In his decade-plus of producing programming for Travel Channel, Andrew Zimmern has traveled to more than 170 countries to sample unusual and exotic dishes, take in the culture and meet the people.

But in the Season 12 premiere of “Bizarre Foods” on Tuesday, Jan. 23, he finds inspiration in his own backyard – on Minnesota’s Paul Bunyan Trail.

“I live in Minnesota,” Zimmern explains, “and I want to tell as many stories about Minnesota as I can.

I believe that human beings are meant to grow where they’re planted and obviously we all know the most about the places where we live. And the Paul Bunyan Trail in Northern Minnesota is one that’s never really been explored outside of a handful of very small documentaries that have never been seen. So I wanted to show people what the folks in Northern Minnesota looked like and how they lived and what they ate.”

On the 120-mile system of former logging trails converted for recreational use, Zimmern takes viewers along as he learns more about the larger-than-life logger and his faithful blue ox Babe, participates in a lumberjack contest, visits a horseradish festival and tries such local creations as muskrat with gravy (“deliciously mild and porky,” he says), bear pastrami, duck stew and crayfish at a crayfish boil.

Yes, good-size crayfish are plentiful in Minnesota lakes and are even considered an invasive species, brought there by boats and fishermen. At restaurants and markets, however, they’re looked on as a local delicacy that is difficult to find at a reasonable price outside of Minnesota and Louisiana.

“The animals themselves thrive,” Zimmern says, “they grow to eating size quickly, there are very few predators but they don’t represent the problem in the sense that wild boars in Louisiana or milfoil or zebra mussels do in our state that choke out other life. ... Some will grow up to two or three inches long with big, large claws. They’re delicious. Beautiful, traditional crayfish-eating size. Cooked up nice and red, tastes delicious.”

Other themed adventures for Zimmern on “Bizarre Foods” this season include Napoleon’s march through Poland, Germany’s Romantic Road, the Amalfi Coast of Italy and Jesse James’ exploits in Missouri.

“The Last Five Years” (2014): The singing skill of Kendrick is a must for this fine adaptation of a stage show as she and Jeremy Jordan (“Supergirl”) trace a relationship in reverse, largely through music.

“Rapture-Palooza” (2013): Kendrick’s combination of smarts and controlled goofiness works well for this post-apocalyptic satire.

“Pitch Perfect” (2012): Not only did Kendrick have a major hit with this story of competition between a cappella groups, she also scored a hit song off it (“Cups”).
