LEE STATE PARK

Built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Lee State Park offers kayaking and canoeing trips through the park’s hardwood forest floodplain. Visitors can fish from the banks of the Lynches River, and children can fish for catfish in the park’s artesian pond.

Equestrian facilities are also available.

Admission to the park is free. Days and hours of operation: Day use area, trails and Loop Road open 9 a.m. to sunset, daily. The park and campground are open yearround.

LAKE WATEREE STATE PARK

Lake Wateree State Park offers both fishing and boating. Numerous fishing tournaments are

hosted here every year, and the park provides a publicly accessible boat ramp, tackle shop and a refueling dock.

An ample number of Lake Wateree camping sites with water and electrical hookups are available. Many Lake Wateree camping sites can also accommodate large RVs. The park also has a swimming area, bird watching opportunities, biking on the paved roads and along the Desportes Island Trail, and a newly opened playground.

Days and hours of operation: May 26 through Sept. 4, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday-Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. FridaySaturday.

Admission is $2 for adults and $1.25 for South Carolina seniors; ages 15 and younger, free.

POINSETT STATE PARK

Poinsett State Park, in the High Hills of Santee, has a mixed ecosystem and offers some of the most unique natural sightings in the park system, especially along the Palmetto Trail, which winds through Manchester State Forest.

The High Hills of Santee offer hiking, biking and equestrian trails that wind through the park — some of which connect to the Palmetto Trail that leads hikers through Manchester State Forest.

Fishing is allowed on the park’s 10-acre lake.

Available for rental are five stand-up paddleboards, eight kayaks, three canoes, one Jon boat and one pedal boat. The park also features 50 campsites (24 with power and 26 without), a fishing pond, a coquina bathhouse built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and pre-revolutionary grist mill ruins and rustic cabins.

Admission is free, and the park is open from 9 a.m. to dark year round.

MANCHESTER STATE FOREST

Manchester State Forest, in Sumter and Clarendon counties, is 28,675 acres of mixed pine and hardwood species native to the Midlands. There are four ponds and several creeks in the forest for year-round fishing. Only electric motors are allowed on the ponds.

The forest offers trails for hiking, mountain bicycling and horseback riding through this forest and the adjacent Poinsett State Park, including the scenic Wateree passage

of the Palmetto Trail.

Permits are required for all activities except hiking.

SANTEE STATE PARK

Santee State Park sits along Lake Marion, which is known for its large catfish.

Camping is offered on the lake, but for guests who prefer to spend the night indoors, rondette cabins are available (10 sit on piers over the lake). There are 158 standard campsites for RV or tent camping, 48 of which have 50 amp service.

Other amenities and activities found in the park include a community meeting building with a screened-in grilling facility, picnic shelters, playgrounds, swimming, biking and hiking trails, great bird watching opportunities and pontoon boat tours of the flooded cypress forest.

Admission to Santee State Park is $2 for adults, $1.25 for S.C. seniors and free for those 15 and younger.

All guests not staying overnight are required to pay admission. Visitors may pay admission at the park office, park store or any one of the three green iron ranger boxes located throughout the park.

The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. year round.

WOODS BAY STATE PARK

Woods Bay State Park has one of the last remaining large Carolina Bays on the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain.

The 1,590-acre park features a wide range of habitats including marsh, Sandhills, oak-hickory forest and shrub bog. Visitors can explore by taking the nature trail encircling the mill pond or by walking the length of the 1,150-foot boardwalk, which provides a look at alligators in the swamp. The best way to see the park is by following a canoe trail which takes paddlers past the Carolina Bays, elliptical depressions which appear swampy but remain dry.

Admission to Woods Bay State Park is free, and the park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Splashing good times The City of Sumter Aquatic Center, 1115 S. Lafayette Blvd. (adjacent to the South HOPE Center), will open swim season with Aquatics Exhibition and Splash Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday, May 25. Admission is free.

Come out and meet the aquatics team, join a program and enjoy free hot dogs and beverages while they last.

Featured on the program will be a Stealth Swim Team demonstration, Sumter Fire, Police and Emergency Responders DIVE Team demonstration, Lifeguard competition and Water Safety and Boating demonstration.

SWIM CAMPS

JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Junior Lifeguard training for ages 11-14 will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 11-Aug. 1. A swim test is required.

This program will provide a foundation of aquatics and leadership knowledge, attitudes and skills for future successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Volunteer opportunities at the Aquatics Center during and upon completion. You must attend class and pass the test to receive certification and volunteer. Cost is $50 per person / $40 government rate.

Sumter School District Seamless Summer Option Feeding Program The Seamless Summer Option, Summer Feeding Program (SSO), allows School Food Authorities to provide free nutritious meals and snacks to children 18 years of age or younger during summer vacation periods.

A person 19 years of age and over with a mental or physical disability as determined by a state or local educational agency and participates during the school year in a public or private non-profit school program may participate in the program.

The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Participating sites may choose either breakfast and lunch, breakfast and a snack, or lunch and a snack per day, per child per site. Sites may be a school, church, recreation center, camp, playground and community park.

Dates of Operation The Summer Feeding Program will operate from Monday, June 10 through Friday, August 2. The program will only be closed July 4.

How to make Slime • 1 1/2 cups of CLEAR glue • 1 1/2 cups of liquid starch Mix it all together, separate the slime into a few small bowls and add food coloring to each bowl.

You only need a few drops of food coloring.

The mixture may need to be mixed with your hands for a bit to get the desired texture, depending on the brand of glue you use.

Water Camp

Fun Factory provides a safe nurturing environment to learn, grow and thrive.

Counselors focus on each child’s needs and work to make sure everyone is a part of the fun. Weekly activities revolve around themes which include age-appropriate games, swimming, field trips, sports activities, arts, crafts and songs. Quiet time is incorporated into the day to help campers get through the long day, and each day has a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities.

Campers are divided into the following age groups: Half-pints (3-4); Rising Stars (5-6); Daybreakers (7-8); and Pathfinders (9-10).

Camp Mac Boykin offers the fun of being outdoors while learning new skills and making new friends.

Located in Pinewood on 55 acres, Camp Mac Boykin offers many activities while keeping true to the Y’s goals of providing an exciting, yet safe, community for young people to explore outdoors, build self-esteem, develop interpersonal skills and make lasting friendships and memories.

Camp Mac Boykin counselors are selected for their special skills and experience, as well as their personality and ability to develop relationships. We invite campers ages 7-14 to join us this summer. *Campers can experience the excitement of overnight camp. They’ll enjoy dinner, make s’mores, play fun games and tell campfire stories.

Childreweek of the overnight. The cost is $25 per child and includes dinner, breakfast and lunch for the next day. Overnight camp dates are available at the member service desk.

Teen Scene

Teen Scene is filled with exciting day trips. Your teens, ages 13-15, won’t feel like they are in a day camp but like they are hanging out with friends in a supportive and challenging environment.

Youth are challenged to set goals, take risks and push themselves to new heights in a safe, supervised environment while participating in age-appropriate field trips and activities. Teen Scene will have one overnight camp at Camp Mac Boykin.

C.I.T. (Counselor In Training) The Counselor in Training (C.I.T.) program provides teens with training in how to use effective leadership skills throughout their lives and how to

C.I.T.s are provided with training, leadership and mentors as they assist in day camp programs and field trips. If your teen is looking for more than just a fun time this summer, C.I.T. Camp may be just for them. This program is designed to give teens, 14-16, who are interested in one day becoming camp counselors or leaders in the community, a head start on that experience. Applications are accepted until June 1. Interviews will be held to determine if teens are qualified and ready for the experience.

Campers will spend the week at the pool learning how to be safe around water, participating in swim lessons and simple rescue techniques. Please send a healthy snack for your child to enjoy midmorning. Limited to the first 20 participants; ages 5-12 years old. If they stay for extended care, please pack a lunch.

Sports Camp – Basketball and Volleyball

If your child enjoys variety, here’s a camp for him/her. What a great way to get a taste of basketball and volleyball. Your child will learn the fundamental skills of each sport while embraced with Christian principles. Please send campers with water and a packed lunch. Limited to 24 participants. Sports camps are for ages 7-12 years old.

YFIT Kid’s Nutrition Camp

This is a weeklong program that focuses on exercise and nutrition for children ages 6-14. Cooking demonstrations along with exercise classes, and nutrition education/ application are featured. Snack and lunch are prepared by and provided for all campers.

Gymnastics Camp

SPRINT SWIM LESSONS

Monday-Friday, ages 3-12 The YMCA offers an extensive learn-to-swim program for all ages.

Whether you are new to the water or looking for advanced techniques, the YMCA has a program for you. There are 8 classes in each sprint session.

Parents are encouraged to attend the fourth and eighth class.

• Pre-School (3-5 years old) — Members $25; Potential Members $37.50 — 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 12:451:15 p.m.

This hour-long class is designed to teach basic tumbling skills such as cartwheels, walkovers, round-offs and jumps.

• Pre-Team and Competitive Gymnastics Team Children must be recommended by the instructor for this class. Cost varies based on number of times a week and member status.

Get ready to cool off in Sumter’s five splash parks. Parks will open May 24 for the summer.

There is no cost, so choose one of the following locations:

• Crosswell Park, 130 Yeadon St.; • North HOPE Park, 904 N. Main St.; • South Sumter Park, 630 S. Sumter St.; • Birnie HOPE Park, 210 S. Purdy St.; and • Palmetto Park, 440 Theatre Drive.

Summer Schedule

Palmetto Tennis Center, 400 Theatre Drive, will hold Summer Tennis Camps for ages 5-13.

Each day will offer new themes designed to keep players motivated toward learning and improving their tennis skills.

Friday Finales include games, food and water.

PTC Tennis Camp I will be held June 24-29. Children arrive at 9 a.m. and leave at noon. Cost is $125.

PTC Tennis Camp II will be held Aug. 5-9. Children arrive at 9 a.m. and leave at noon. Cost is $125.
