Roads group keeps on truckin’ Roads alliance keeping up pressure with social media BY JIM HILLEY jim@theitem.com Out-of-state groups spent a lot of money during the South Carolina primary season to encourage opposition to an increase in the gasoline tax, but Bill
Ross, president and CEO of South Carolina Alliance to Fix Our Roads, said he didn’t see much of an impact. “As you look at the primaries, we didn’t see any of the legislators who support an increase in the gas tax being defeated in the primaries,” Ross said. “Groups coming in like Americans for Prosperity and a couple of other groups like that came in and went after them big time on the gas tax,” he said.
“They were trying to sway the public to contact their legislators and urge them not to increase the gas tax and those kinds of things.” Anti-gas tax campaigns across the country didn’t get much mileage either, he said. “Nationally, voting for a gas tax increase or user fee in states across the

Sumter man dies in motorcycle wreck after chase BY ADRIENNE SARVIS adrienne@theitem.com A Sumter County man died early Tuesday morning after driving off the road while operating his motorcycle on Nazarene Church Road. Sumter County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 37-year-old Billy Ray Hinson. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, Hin-
son was riding his 2007 Honda motorcycle west on Nazarene Church Road when he went off the right side of the road and struck a ditch and fence about 1 a.m. According to Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office, Hinson reportedly fled a traffic stop in Clarendon County and led officers on a chase into Sumter County. Quiana Anderson Reed will be Mrs. South Carolina United States until April after competing in Las Vegas last week for the title of Mrs. United States and winning the title of First Runner-Up. She said the pageant experiences she’s had since winning her first, Miss Sumter High School, have all been positive. The 33-year-old has either won or finished in the top five in every pageant she’s entered, in fact. Reed described her pageant experiences: The Mrs. United States pageant, she said, “is totally different from state. At state, it’s a full day of events, but at nationals you have a full day of events for five days.” Reed said the diversity of the contestants and their different personalities also made a big impact on her. “While some women are happy to be there and have the opportunity, and others (including myself) are blessed beyond measure for the opportunity, you’re also coming to win,” she said. “Many of those ladies left behind their children to represent their state. They spent large amounts of money on travel, wardrobe and other sponsorship just to make their trip happen.” Her experience was buoyed by the support of friends, many from Sumter, and the presence of about 40 family and friends in Las Vegas. “I received so much support from my hometown, and I think a lot of them stayed up late to watch the live show,” Reed said. “I really would like to thank Mr. Scott Will of Scott Will Toyota in Sumter for being a sponsor for the 2016 Mrs. United States Pageant.
