U.S. Supreme Court justice dies 79-year-old Antonin Scalia known for his conservatism WASHINGTON (AP) — Antonin Scalia, the influential conservative and most provocative member of the Supreme Court, has died. He was 79.

‘I enjoyed every day I practiced medicine’

The U.S. Marshals Service in Washington confirmed Scalia’s death at a private residence in the Big Bend area of West Texas. Spokeswoman Donna

Sellers said Scalia had retired the previous evening and was found dead Saturday morning after he did not appear for breakfast. His death sets up a likely ideological showdown during a presidential election year as President Obama weighs nominating a successor to the justice in the remainder of his White House term. Scalia was part of a 5-4 conservative

majority — with one of the five, Anthony Kennedy, sometimes voting with liberals on the court. Happy Valentine’s Day

Dr. Blanchard recalls career BY KONSTANTIN VENGEROWSKY konstantin@theitem.com Dr. Mary Elizabeth Blanchard remembers a time when working in the medical field was much different from what it is today. Blanchard, one of the first female Obstetrics and Gynecology physicians in the state, began her career in 1956, before the existence of technologies such as ultrasound, fetal monitors and laser surgery. Back in those days, a pregnant woman’s uterus was checked with a tape measure to see if the baby was growing, for example, Blanchard said. Doctors would observe how many times the baby moved by having an expectant mother lie on her left side. A fetascope was used to listen to the baby’s heart tones. Blanchard was born in McColl, a small town in Marlboro County. At the age of 4, she and her family moved to Bishopville, where her father, the late Dr. Felix Anthony Blanchard, served as a family physician. Her mother was the late Mary Gilchrist Tatum Blanchard. In the 1930s and 1940s, many people did not have the means to pay for treatment. Sometimes patients would just pay with food instead, Blanchard said. “I remember one person paid my father in syrup,” she said. Blanchard graduated from Bishopville High School in 1945.
