Ridgeway on way to 3rd term in House BY JIM HILLEY jim@theitem.com One local state representative will likely retain his seat in the South Carolina House while the open seat to replace retiring South Carolina State Rep. Grady Brown will have a runoff for the Democratic nomination following Tuesday’s primary election. In perhaps the tricounty area’s most closely watched race, six Democrats were on the primary ballot to replace retiring Brown in Tuesday’s primary election for S.C. House District 50 in Lee, Sumter and Kershaw counties. Listed on the Democratic ballot to fill Brown’s seat were Brian Alston, Crystal K. Cunningham, Tom Drayton, Keith Johnson, Demoine Kinney and Will Wheeler. Unofficial vote totals in the District with all

precincts reporting in Sumter and Kershaw counties and 21 of 22 in Lee RIDGEWAY County, were Alston, 795; Cunningham, 331; Drayton, 956; Johnson, 169; Kinney, 753; and Wheeler, 1,590. None of the six candidates was able to gather 50 percent of the vote, and a runoff election will be held June 28 to decide the nomination between Wheeler and Drayton. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the deadline for mail ballots set June 24 and for absentee voting set June 27. State Rep. Robert “Bobby” Ridgeway III will likely be going to Columbia for his third term representing South Carolina House District
