Politicians react to election law reform Gov. Haley signs bill to prevent repeat of 2012 election troubles BY BRADEN BUNCH bbunch@theitem.com With the recent signature of Gov. Nikki Haley, South Carolina has reformed its election laws in a way that many local political figures think will prevent embarrassing issues such as the state experienced last year, when hundreds of candidates were

thrown off the ballot. During the 2012 primary election season, nearly 250 candidates statewide were removed from partisan ballots after the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled competing state election laws had ultimately been misinterpreted by both the South Carolina Republican Party and the South Carolina Democratic

Party and these office seekers who, in turn, filed their candidacy incorrectly. This included 11 potential candidates in the local tri-county area, forcing them to either seek a petition candidacy or remain off the ballot entirely. With the new law, approved overwhelmingly by both the state Senate and House of Representatives,

Sexual Trauma Service of the Midlands recently opened a new office in Sumter. This is the first office the organization that assists survivors of sexual violence has opened outside of Columbia, according to a June 14 news release. “The numbers justified it,” said Ginny Waller, executive director. This year alone, STSM WALLER has provided 490 services to 42 victims of sexual assault and abuse in Sumter County, the release COLLINS states. They also had two hospital calls last week, Waller said. The private, nonprofit agency is committed to providing free, direct services to survivors of sexual assault and abuse, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, hospital accompaniment, court accompaniment, personal advocacy, individual and group counseling and education about sexual trauma issues. “We’re going to be there for the survivors from the time they are immediately impacted all the way to 30, 40 or 50 years later when they may be interested in assistance or counseling,” Waller said. The United Way member agency started serving the area in March 2011. In August 2012 the STSM

board of directors approved the permanent adoption of Sumter County and the hiring of a full-time staff member to open the agency’s first satellite office. “Since we arrived here a few weeks ago, we’ve seen an increase in requests for legal advocacy and more referrals for counseling from Shaw Air Force Base,” said Melanie Griffin Snipes, STSM director of crisis services, in the release. She will be based in the new office at least two days each month to provide individual counseling. The woman leading the office is a Sumter native. “I am excited to provide these free and confidential services to all survivors in my home community,” said Sarah Collins, community advocate and prevention specialist.
