SLED investigating Sumter High School accused of multiple testing violations during exit exams BY BRADEN BUNCH bbunch@theitem.com Sumter High School and its administrators are under potential criminal investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for how they conducted their High School Assessment Program testing this school year. The investigation has been

prompted by a request from the South Carolina Department of Education, after its own investigation into the local HARRIS campus. According to its report, several testing violations were found. “… it is unlawful for anyone

knowingly and willfully to violate security procedures regulations,” the education department says in its letter to SLED Chief Mark Keel dated June 3, adding a copy of its own report, which highlighted the concerns. Such allegations are typically turned over to SLED for investigation. Included in its findings, the

education department said it found testing materials not being secured properly at the campus, as well as evidence that teachers and testing administrators were not provided materials for adequate review and training, and an overall poor testing environment for students. “It was obvious that test materials had not yet been pre-

pared for each test administrator,” according to the state report, based on its findings from visiting the school on April 12, 17 and 18. “Particularly for a large school like Sumter High School, this showed a lack of preparation for HSAP testing,” the report reads. he last of area schools will let out this week, signaling the end of the school year and the beginning of the Vacation Bible School season. For most churches, it is the best-attended event among children up to 12 years of age. In its essence, Vacation Bible School is a period of time during the summer months dedicated to educating kids on certain spiritual truths in an immersive fashion that involves song, crafts, drama and Scripture application. And for parents, it’s a great free day care service. I have personally looked forward to Vacation Bible School from my first sip of watered-down Kool-Aid served at snack time. I loved the songs, the costumes and the crafts — especially the crafts. I would wager there were few other 6-year-olds who glued cotton balls on a cutout of a sheep with the acuity that I did. I can confidently say that I have explored every allegorical use of the Popsicle® stick known to mankind. We’ve come a long way SEE FAITH MATTERS, PAGE A6
