Talk to many local hunters, and you’ll eventually hear war stories about hunters falling asleep and literally falling from tree stands. That’s why experts recommend a harness strap for hunters using tree stands, especially those having limited or no restraint who sit perched in trees for hours, waiting for their prey. In other words, take falling out of trees off your “to-do” list this year. That’s just one of the reminders South Carolina Department of Natural Resources offers for hunter safety in an article in this issue of Lakeside. Speaking of hunting, did the October 2015 flood – what locals call the 1,000-year flood – affect hunting grounds you’re used to walking? We asked the folks at DNR how the flood affected wildlife migration. Thankfully, most of the wildlife escaped the devastating floods, but not without facing some challenges. Perhaps you just want to verify that deer and other animals actually do populate the area you plan to hunt. Our outdoor columnist explains how he attached a camera to a tree and left it for days at a time, only to discover an active site.

2 AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2016 | LAKESIDE

And if you need to get off a few practice rounds with your guns, DNR recently purchased Indigo Shooting Range. While some of the property needs development, the park will offer opportunities to practice skeet and pistol shooting as early as this fall. We give you a history of the project and what to expect. For fishing enthusiasts, we report on fish migrations during the transformation from summer to fall fishing. And we talked to experts who tell you how to properly clean fish. If you’re visiting the area with youth, we have an article explaining 10 things you can do with pre-teens. We looked at cost-effective, educational and fun activities that should excite your children. As always, we list upcoming festivals you won’t want to miss. If you have a story idea for Lakeside, please feel free to contact me at rick@theitem.com, or call (803) 774-1201. I promise not to act like I just fell out of a tree when you contact me.

SANTEE STATE PARK OFFERS FAMILY ORIENTED OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

by KONSTANTIN VENGEROWSKY konstantin@theitem.com SANTEE – Located on a 2,500-acre site in a cypress forest and surrounded by Lake Marion, Santee State Park offers an abundance of activities for a nature enthusiast, weekend camper or family gathering. Many of the visitors to the park are repeat customers who’ve been coming back for years, according to Tim Ritter, assistant park manager. “We get people from all over the state, nation and even other countries,” said Ritter. The park is one of 47 managed by the South Carolina State Park Service. Manning resident Jimmy Thompson first started vacationing there with his wife, Carole, in the 1960s. “We fell in love with this area and have been coming back ever since,” he said. Thompson served as a ranger at the park for five years. Today, he works in the park’s souvenir store. The park, created in 1942, consists of two campgrounds, with a total of 163 camping spots for recreational vehicles and tents. Visitors also have the option of staying at one of the 30 rondette cabins, 10 of which are literally on top of a pier over the lake, and, 20 which are waterfront. Each two-bedroom cabin sleeps as many as six people, and is completely furnished, Ritter said. Cabin rental prices vary from $80 a day to $160 a day, depending on the season, he said. Jimmy Richardson, of Columbia, has been a park visitor for 39 years. He spent summers there with his family while growing up, and continues coming back to the same waterfront cabin each

year. “It’s nice, quiet and peaceful,” he said. “There’s also great fishing here.” This year, about 40 of his family members were having a family reunion there. The park also has a community meeting building with a large, screened-in grilling facility, and six picnic shelter areas. Some residents prefer a more traditional camping option, however, by pitching a tent. Robyn Lambert, of Summerville, has been coming back to the site for about 10 years. She used to take field trips there with a group of about 300 Cub Scouts. In late June, Lambert was staying at the site with four of her grandchildren. “They’re transported to a different world here,” she said. “It’s peaceful and quiet here, and it gives them a chance to enjoy nature.” Scott Haskell, of Goose Creek, was staying at the site in his recreational vehicle (RV). He said he enjoys the quiet and freedom of the park. “It’s a family-oriented place,” Haskell said. The park includes three hiking trails and one biking trail. There is a one-mile “Limestone Nature Trail.” There is also an “Oak Pinolly Nature Trail” and “Sinkhole Pond Nature Trail,” both of which are 2/3-ofa-mile long. The biking trail is 7 miles long.

The “Limestone Nature Trail” includes a thick forest cover and terrain, where visitors can observe wildflowers, buckeye and papaw, and wildlife such as deer, rabbits and snakes, Ritter said. The “Oak Pinolly Nature Trail” offers an area to spot deer, switch canes, ostrich ferns and wild azaleas, he said. The “Sinkhole Pond Nature Trail” includes a varied habitat, from a pine forest to a swampy area to a limestone sinkhole pond. There are several sinkholes in the area, Ritter said. A sinkhole is a cavity in the ground, most often found in limestone bedrock, and caused by water erosion. It provides a route for surface water to disappear underground. The park includes a designated beach area, where swimming is allowed, Ritter said. There are alligators in the lake, but Ritter said they are not an issue. He said alligators typically avoid contact with people, although

visitors need to be aware they are there. Visitors have the opportunity to fish from any of the park’s piers, he said. The scenic trips are narrated by a naturalist/biologist and are popular among school groups, church groups, scout groups and family reunions, Livingston said. Livingston is also owner and founder of Nature Adventures Outfitters, Inc., a company based out of Charleston, which runs several programs at Santee State Park. Livingston said visitors can participate in a swamp ecology kayak and canoe program at the park, led by naturalist guides and

by ADRIENNE SARVIS adrienne@theitem.com It depends on how you like your fish, said Tyrone Shannon, an employee of Liberty Seafood, 602 W Liberty St. in Sumter. For this article, Shannon demonstrated how to fillet a fish. The first step to cleaning a fish is to get a fish, he said. Next, gather your tools: a boning knife, a filleting knife, a fish scaler, a soft-bristled brush to clean out the fish and fresh water. Begin with the fish scaler, a manual or electric scaler, and run the device over the outside of the fish to remove the scales from the body. firm brushing but a softer hand is needed to brush away waste on more tender meat. Once the insides have been cleaned out, run clean water over the fish to remove any extra scales or innards still hanging around. Find the top of the fish’s backbone and slide the fillet knife along the bones makes sure not to actually touch them. Now that the fish has been cleaned, start the fillet at the on top of the vertebrate where the head was removed and glide the knife, without cutting through the bone, to the tail of the fish. It may be necessary to make multiple cuts with the knife by gliding the knife through the fish above the bones, lifting the meat and gliding the knife again until the fillet is done. For a good fillet, you don’t want to leave too much meat on the bones, Shannon said. You want to get close to the bones but you don’t want to run the knife over them too much because it can dull the blade, he said. With practice, filleting a fish does not take much effort, Shannon said. “Let the knife do the work.” You don’t need to pull the knife, he said. After the fish has been cleaned, cut and cooked, the fish heads can be used for fishing, crab fishing, fertilizing a garden or feeding your cat, Shannon said. Anyone who is not interested in cleaning or cutting a fish on their own can bring their catch to Liberty Seafood. Just make sure to call in advance. Shannon said it is better to bring in fish earlier in the week because Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for regular customers. He also encourages fishermen fish to keep the fish under ice, not water. “Water is not good for keeping fish fresh,” he said. To contact Liberty Seafood, call (803) 773-1313.

Tips to help catch fish while protecting fisherman

by ADRIENNE SARVIS adrienne@theitem.com

For more information Inky Davis, Santee Cooper County Bass Fishing Guide, 1-803478-7289 or inkydavis.com. Wayne Vining, Santee Cooper Lakes CatfishnFool Fishing Guide Service, (803) 238-0596 or www.catfishnfool.com. Rick Maynard, Santee Cooper County Catfish and Crappie Fishing Guide, (803) 778-1433 or catfishguide@msn.com. Santee Cooper fishing guides, visit www.sccga.org.

As the weather gets cooler, fishermen should be prepared to switch their fishing techniques. Inky Davis, bass fishing guide, said fall is the best time to go out on the water. Fall hunting season and football takes many fishermen away from lakes making the water less crowded and more enjoyable, he said. As a bass-fishing guide, Davis said bass start to move slower as it gets colder so the method of fishing has to change. Cold weather slows the metabolism of most fish, he said. Davis suggests using crankbaits, plastic baits that wiggle in the water mimicking a real fish when they are reeled in. He said stripers get more active during the fall and bream bite more when it’s cooler. Also, when it gets colder, fishermen can find catfish swimming underneath schools of shad fish. Davis said the catfish wait for the shad to die and fall deeper into the water. When it gets colder outside, anyone fishing for catfish can pull in a shad and toss it back into the water as bait to try to catch catfish. Davis also provided some safety tips. Aside from changing his fishing techniques during the different seasons, Davis alters how long he stays on the water. During the summer, Davis tries not to stay on the water too long because of the heat and humidity. He’ll fish for about six hours during the summer and eight to 10 hours during

the fall. Also, if you are new to the lake, take your time navigating or ride with a guide who can show you the best places to fish and what areas are dangerous, he said. Sometimes waterways are not as clearly marked as they should be, he said. And, get off the water when there is lightning, he said. “Watch the weather,” he said Wayne Vining, a catfish, crappie and bream fishing guide, said people should fish deeper during the summer. His final tip is just to go out and fish. “Go early and stay late,” he said. “Some days they bite, some days they don’t.” Vining also urges fishermen to take care of themselves while out on the water to truly enjoy their day of fishing. Bring sunscreen, an umbrella and drinking water, and make sure to keep your bait fresh, he said. Rick Maynard, crappie and catfish fishing guide, said he’ll do some drift-fishing while fishing for catfish during the summer. When drift-fishing, fishermen let the boat drift in the wind at a slow and steady speed. Maynard also says using stink bait will be helpful to attract catfish which hunt by sent. There are not a lot of crappie in the summer so you’ll need to fish in deeper water or fish around brush piles, Maynard said. Some fishermen take the time to set up their own brush piles, he said. Maynard stresses that fishermen should avoid fishing at someone else’s brush pile because it could have taken a long time to set it up. No one owns the lake but is an etiquette type thing, he said.

The Sumter, Clarendon and Lee county area has a strong hunting culture. Many people own firearms for hunting, but also for protection and sports like skeet shooting. Having guns in your home can be dangerous and federal law requires any licensed importer, manufacturer or dealer to sell or transfer any handgun with a secure gun storage or safety device. Local sporting goods store Simpson Ace Hardware sells all of its guns with safety devices, which employee and safe specialist Brian Norton says stops a person from firing the gun. Such locks, which often block the chamber or prevents the shooter from pulling a trigger, keeps kids safe but do not protect firearms from theft. That’s where safes come in. Ranging from the size of bedside tables to walk-in closets, owners use gun mainly to keep guns out of the hands of children and protect firearms and other valuable property from thieves. Norton said safe shoppers look for a safe’s fire rating and security as well as other storage features. Some higher-end safes include “Uniforce” bolts that lock in sync, foiling thieves who might try to cut one bolt and work their way around to open a safe’s door. The small holes where the wires go through the panel on keypad safes protect the safe by using a diamond-cut steel plate. Norton said breaking into even lower-end safes requires professionals with experience, the right equipment and a lot of time, luxuries that most burglars don’t enjoy. He said that 99 percent of the time, the average thief is going to come into your house, look at the safe and take the Xbox instead. Gun safes generally come in two categories: digital keypad entry or mechanical entry. The body of the safe and the internal components are the same between digital and mechanical models — the locking mechanism is the only thing that’s different. Norton said the advantages of a digital safe are the speed of entry and the ability of the average user to program a four-digit access code. The owner can access a keypad safe much more quickly than a mechanical safe. On the other hand, he believes mechanical locks are somewhat more secure since, unlike with digital safes, there is no possibility of a software override to the combination.

SAFE BET Jim Strong, owner of Strong Arms, a local firearms dealer, said owning a safe provides peace of mind about your belongings. He said it’s definitely something everybody should have, especially for firearms, which criminals target. Ken Bell, public information officer for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, reported that thieves stole 125 firearms Sumter County between Jan. 1 and June 30, and recovered 19 in the same time. Most burglars familiar with alarm systems try to spend less than 30 seconds in your home, Strong said. “They’re obviously going to look for a safe and that’s usually in the closet. But 99 times out of 100, they’ll check the locks and that’s it. Because if it’s locked, they’re not going to fool with it. That’s a 20- to 30-minute job. “It’s only when you don’t bolt it down that you hear people say, ‘they brought a cart in and loaded it up and left,’” Strong aid. “But basically your normal breakin is a snatch-and-grab and they’re not going to mess with a safe.” Norton also recommends bolting down safes, especially smaller models, to preclude the possibility of someone stealing the whole thing. Another important thing to keep in

mind when storing firearms in safes is controlling moisture levels. Strong recommends placing safes on interior walls rather than exterior ones, where environmental conditions could affect safes. Gun owners can buy safes with builtin dehumidifiers, or dehumidifying packs that plug into the wall, which need to be changed every couple of months. Entry-level rifle safes start at $600 to $700 and large ones typically cost as much as $4,000, though models are produced that cost from $8,000 to $10,000. Norton said the Winchester Ranger Deluxe, which sells for about $700, is Simpsons’ most popular model of safe, but its higher-end Browning safes also sell consistently. Norton says when he talks to someone about a safe it’s all about what the customer’s budget is, what criteria they want to meet, and what security features they want to have. He tries to get customers the maximum amount of features for the budget that they have. Norton said buying a safe really is an investment; it’s not like you’re buying a TV. “It’s protecting your important stuff and providing peace of mind,” he said.

Benji Sandifer, an employee of Simpson’s Hardware, talks about the importance of having adjustable shelves in a safe.

Some safe manufacturers offer slots for long rifles and hand guns on the door. Safe designs vary based on the needs of the client and come in a variety of sizes and colors.

AFFECTS OF EPIC

FLOOD ON UPCOMING SEASON by ANDY WILSON intern@theitem.com

Roby Kelley uses an elbow carry to safely transport his rifle while walking in a line of hunters.

As hunting seasons approach, hunters may wonder how the epic flood of October 2015 affects the upcoming seasons. During a three-day period beginning Oct. 3, Clarendon and Sumter counties received a deluge of more than 20 inches of rain in what Gov. Nikki Haley called a 1,000-year flood. The floods certainly disrupted last fall’s season. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources temporarily suspended deer hunting in Sumter and Clarendon counties, along with 13 other counties in the Wateree Congaree, Santee, Waccamaw, Black River and Edisto drainage systems. In the statement it released on Oct. 7, 2015 to announce the suspension, SCDNR reported that “the flooding had created potential for exploitation of game species that are deprived of their normal escape routes and confined to small areas of high ground.” Michael Hook, the small game program leader for SCDNR, said the flooding affected the ability to hunt dove, but since they didn’t have babies in the nest in October, there has been no measurable decrease in dove population. Hook said that if the flood had occurred this time of year, when many doves are nesting, it could have been very harmful. Hook said the deer survived the flood well because they swim well. He said that deer have had a favorable spring this year and he predicts a good hunting season. However, the flood affected the bobwhite quail, which spends much of its life on or near the ground, making it more vulnerable to floods. He said that in some portions of the Lowcountry as much as 75 percent of the quail population died as a result of the flood. Hook said the flood waters drove quail to high-ground areas which made them more vulnerable to predators. Recent DNR surveys indicate quail recovering better than expected. DNR projects quail to bounce back quickly due to their ability to ramp up reproduction and nest several times a year. DNR expects quail hunting season to go on as usual, from the Monday before Thanksgiving

to March 1. Deer hunting season is right around the corner, and many of us are already yearning for those cool fall days in the stand. But hunting season can be a time of danger as well. Lt. Kim Leverich of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources reported that accidental shootings associated with hunting claimed the lives of three people in 2015, as well as injuring an additional 29. Following basic gun safety rules is essential to reducing such tragedies. Project Childsafe, a nonprofit organization dedicated to firearms safety, lists several of these rules for safe handling of guns: Know how the firearm operates; Always keep a gun pointed in a safe direction, even when it is unloaded; Never assume that a firearm is unloaded— immediately check for ammunition; and Always keep your finger off the trigger, even when handling an unloaded gun. Your finger should rest outside the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Leverich emphasized the importance of hunter’s education courses for teaching safety in the woods. She said two of the most important ways to be safe while hunting are wearing orange to increase visibility to other hunters and using a safety harness while climbing up to or down from deer stands. According to information released by SCDNR, there were 11 tree stand accidents in 2011 and 10 in 2013, resulting in three deaths. The accidents are entirely preventable if safety harnesses are properly used. For hunting safety, the U.S. Forest Service recommends that you: Check hunting equipment before and after outings; Carry a first aid kit; Clearly identify your target before shooting; and Leave hunting plans in writing that include the date, time, location and expected time of return from your hunt. Hunting is a timeless activity that lets you appreciate and enjoy the outdoors. Commonsense safety guidelines exist to ensure that preventable tragedies don’t mar that enjoyment.

Old shot gun shells and shattered skeet cover the range of the former Indigo Gun Club in Eastover.

SHOOTING

RANGE by JIM HILLEY jim@theitem.com For many years, the Indigo Gun Club was a private facility, accessible only to members. Later this year, however, the club will re-open as a public facility, giving area gun enthusiasts a place to practice shooting their firearms in a topnotch facility. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recently finalized the purchase of the club and the 133 acres of land it sits on, said DNR Hunting and Boater Education Director Capt. Billy Downer. “We will be renovating that range for the public,” Downer said. He said the shooting range has a clubhouse with bathroom facilities, four skeet ranges, one trap overlay range, a tower and a pistol and rifle range. “The pistol and rifle range is very unimproved,” he said. Downer said the renovation will take place in phases. The first phase will include renovating the

clubhouse and bringing it to Americans with Disability Act standards, he said. “Anything we do is being done with funds which are from the sale of firearm ammunition,” Downer said. The federal excise tax is distributed to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife which then disburses it to state governments for such things as habitat restoration, hunter education, wildlife management, wildlife research and shooting ranges, according to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau website at www.ttb.gov. “One of the requirements of our grant is that we seek out areas for doing more public opportunity for shooting,” Downer said. “It was previously a private range and we are going to use it as a public range.” Downer said the renovation of the clubhouse will include sidewalks, ramps and an upgrade to the restrooms to make it all ADA accessible. “We are going to separate a classroom where we will have hunter safety classes and other types of firearms safety classes,” he said. the area. “It’s a little bit farther from here than we would like but it’s better than going to Columbia,” he said. “There’s not really a lot of options around here.” Simpsons Hardware sells combinations of shotguns, handguns and rifles. “Most of the people shooting year-round are shooting handguns,” he said. “You do have the occasional person who wants to shoot their rifles just to make sure they are zeroed in and play around a little bit, but for the most part it’s people shooting handguns for just keeping up and getting to know your weapon a little bit.” The shooting range is the second major acquisition by the DNR in the Wateree Basin. The DNR also recently gained ownership of the Wateree River Heritage Reserve nearby. The two properties will complement each other, Downer said. “It’s going to be called the

There will be no fee to use the rifle and pistol component, which will be renovated in one of the later phases, he said. “It’s going to take some time,” Downer said. “The pistol and rifle will take longer because we have to bring it up to National Rifle Association safety standards with side berms, brand-new rifle positions and buffering for noise.”

Use of the shotgun portion of the range will incur a fee to offset the cost of clay, he said. The DNR is hoping to have the clubhouse and the shotgun portions open in November, he said, and it will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, he said. “This is a huge opportunity for us because there is a great need for public shooting access in the Midlands,” he said.

The dining room of the Indigo Gun Club will be transformed into a teaching area once the DNR finishes the renovations.

Besides individual shooters, the facility will also be a place for school teams to hold competitive events, and for the DNR to conduct hunter and firearm safety classes. Downer said the range will take up about 70 acres of the 130acre site, with the rest remaining unimproved as a buffer zone. The range will be staffed while open, he said. “It will be a first-class facility,” Downer said. ^^^ IHKJVJR JVT

wildlife on trail cameras by DAN GEDDINGS outdoor columnist We couldn’t wait any longer than a week, and I was hopeful that we would have some decent pictures. I took my digital camera with me so we could change memory cards and look at the trail camera pictures on the spot. We were not disappointed! My son, Clayton, and I were as excited as little kids at Christmastime. There were more than 400 images on the trail camera. Day and night pictures of deer, flocks of turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, black birds, me and Clayton approaching the area, and a close-up of us inspecting the camera. I put a new card in the trail camera so I could take the card with all the pictures home, and download them on my computer. The trail camera had been a birthday present from my wife, Ginger. It had sat on a shelf at home, unused for months, until Ginger asked me one day, rather sternly, if I was going to use it. I assured her that I would, and within days took the camera and a bag of corn out to our property in Clarendon County. I took Clayton along to help me with the camera settings and to carry the heavy bag of corn. We picked out a clearing in the woods and selected a tree on the south side of the opening to attach the camera. We positioned the camera at about 24 to 30 inches from the ground.

Dan and Clay Geddings check out the camera as it takes their picture.

Then we spread the corn out in the clearing, keeping it about 10 feet away from the camera. With the camera facing north, daytime pictures would have good lighting, and no glare. We set the camera on a 5-second delay between pictures. After reviewing the pictures at the site that day, I realized that we had too many pictures that were nearly identical with the 5-second delay, so we changed it to a minute. We spread the corn and walked back out, vowing to wait another week. A week later – fantastic results again! There were more than 350 pictures, even with the one minute delay. After two weeks in the woods I wanted to try something different. It was late winter and I knew that wood AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2016 | LAKESIDE 43

ducks would be nesting soon. Maybe I could get some duck pictures. This time we took the camera with us when we left the woods. I’ve never seen trail camera pictures of ducks, but I was confident it could be done. I decided to set the camera up near one of the nesting boxes on my pond. I have 18 wood duck nest boxes scattered about the property, on two ponds and a natural pocosin. I chose one of the boxes nearest to the shore that could be waded to easily. Clayton and I put on our waders, took a 6-foot steel fence post, and a 5-pound hammer out into the thigh deep water near the box. We drove the post into the soft bottom and attached the trail camera – pointed toward the front of the box. Now, all we had to do was wait. Again, we gave it a week. A week later we went back with the waders and digital camera. We had pictures, but they were not so good. We had set the camera about 10 feet away, and it was too far. So, we pulled the post and moved it much closer. 44 AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2016 | LAKESIDE

TOP: The trail camera catches a doe and her yearling near the camera while they were away. RIGHT: Wood duck hens, which compete for good nest sites, check out one of the wood boxes on the property.

The post was shorter than the nest box when driven into the bottom, and I had to lean the post back to get the camera pointed up at the box. This time I only waited a few days and went back to see if the ducks were still using the nest box. I was worried that the camera might spook them, being so close to the box. But, I was elated when I checked the memory card. Fantastic duck pictures! I left the camera there for about three weeks, checking it periodically.

Anybody could use a trail camera. They are easy to set up and take fantastic pictures. We got one for my father-in-law after he mentioned seeing deer tracks in his yard. He put the camera on a tree not more than 10 yards from his house, and was amazed to get night time pictures of the deer. They are not just for hunters. The possibilities are just about endless. All you need is a little imagination and some patience. You might be surprised at the results.
