Clarendon president says local leaders need to build bridges BY BRADEN BUNCH bbunch@theitem.com (803) 774-1201 MANNING — With an impassioned, albeit somewhat discombobulated speech which he attributed to nerves from the occasion, Robert McFadden, president of the Clarendon County NAACP, declared his candidacy for the state House of Representatives District 64 seat as a Republican. Speaking Thursday night at the monthly meeting of the Clarendon County GOP, the black leader of the local branch of the civil rights organization both set forward some of his goals for office and criticized the actions of some other black leaders for intentionally causing racial discord in the community. “They’re telling the blacks that all white people are bad. That Republicans are bad. That’s not true,” McFadden said. “We need to start building bridges

Teens passionate about roller derby BY RAYTEVIA EVANS revans@theitem.com (803) 774-1214 When Courtney Evans walks the hallways of Furman Middle School, she’s shy and reserved and can even be described as quiet at times. The small-framed 13-year-old has a calm demeanor and sincere disposition. But outside the walls of her school, Evans takes on the persona of “Little Hammer,” a jammer for the Columbia Quad Squad Junior Rollers. And when she pads up, laces her roller skates and hits the roller derby track, a complete transformation takes place.

Johnson double-murder trial halted when juror falls ill BY JIM HILLEY jim@theitem.com (803) 774-1214 The trial of Justin Johnson for the April 6, 2011, deaths of Maxine Caraway and infant Jayden Caraway was adjourned shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, after the jury foreman had a medical issue and was transported by ambulance to a medical facility for further diagnosis. Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Young told the courtroom the illness did not seem to be serious, and the foreman said he wanted to continue hearing testimony, but that idea was vetoed by emergency personnel. Young adjourned the court until 9:30 a.m. Monday, when a determination will be made on how to continue. The day began with public defender Scott Robinson cross-examining Capt. Kipp Coker of the Clarendon County Sheriff ’s Department concerning his interview with Johnson

the day of the incident. Robinson questioned the practice of misleading Johnson during the interview. On Thursday, jurors watched the video taken from the 11-hour interrogation during which detectives appeared to get Johnson to confess to the crimes. “All you had was a stack of BS,” Robinson said. “We were trying to get a response,” Coker said. “Our job is to get the truth,” Coker said. “We had the statement from Kaisha (Caraway). I was learning more and more by the minute. We were trying to build a box around Johnson’s story.” “And all you had to build it with was BS,” Robinson said. “Kaisha’s story, that’s the only thing in your mind saying the ‘Robert’ story was wrong.” During the interrogation, Johnson had first told officers that a man
