Health System, which includes the Manning hospital, have agreed to explore an agreement with McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, according to Don Ellis, a
member of the Clarendon Health System board of trustees. “We agreed to pursue some sort of arrangement with McLeod at our last board
meeting,” Ellis said Monday. “It could be just a sharing of one line of service all the way up to a full merger.”

BY JIM HILLEY jim@theitem.com Rembert Area Community Coalition is getting a new coat of paint and some landscaping improvements thanks to a group of international students from Georgia Tech University. Christy Rakness, as immigration adviser at the Office of International Education, said she helped bring 37 students to South Carolina for community service projects. She said the students are from nations such as India, China, Korea, Indonesia, France, Germany and Pakistan. “Our office sponsors a trip every spring and fall break,” she said. Among the group are undergraduates and graduates, Rakness said. On Monday the students were busily engaged in painting the two-story community center and clearing away

FROM STAFF REPORTS Demoine Kinney has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the South Carolina House of Representatives District 50 seat in the June 14 Primary Election. “The need for economic development is crucial to the future of Lee County,” Kinney said. “If elected, I would partner with others to aggressively pursue state and federal funds for KINNEY our district for industry and small businesses.” He said he would work to bring recreational and educational opportunities, including vocational training, to the community and would develop partnerships with criminal justice leaders to assist youthful offenders. He also said he will be an advocate for veterans’ rights.

Fireside Fund ends season with another strong year in Sumter BY JACK OSTEEN jack@theitem.com Fireside Fund wrapped up another successful year with nearly $53,000 in donations given during the four-month period. “The Fireside Fund illustrates the caring nature of our community,” said Hubert Osteen, chairman of Osteen Publishing Co. “It’s amazing that each year residents of Sumter donate more than $50,000 to help people they don’t even know but for whom they have a generous heart.
