ed Thursday night and charged with murder in the death of Jessie Slater III, who was found in the 400 block of Manville-Wisacky Road shortly after emergency personnel WILSON were dispatched to the area about 10:40 p.m. Monday. Both Wilson and 21-year-old Marquis Jarell Boyd, who was arrested

and charged with murder on Wednesday, both appeared before a judge Friday at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center for a preliminary hearing. A circuit court judge will hold a possible bond hearing at a later date. While authorities have not said who they think fired the shot that killed Slater, Maj. J.D. Dellinger of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are confident both

Boyd and Wilson were involved. “The investigation, from the beginning, showed there were two individuals there when the shooting took place,” Dellinger said, adding it was clear there had been animosity between the victim and the two suspects. “Both of the individuals had somewhat of an ongoing dispute with the

Group doctor visits? Some pregnant women say yes BY JADE REYNOLDS jade@theitem.com (803) 774-1250 It’s not the traditional approach, but it does have fans. For the last year, Sumter OB-GYN has been offering CenteringPregnancy. “It’s a model of care for lowrisk patients that takes them out of the traditional setting of one-on-one with a physician behind a closed door and moves them to a group setting where they see each other every twoto-four weeks for two hours,” said Tori Whitaker, practice manager. “It takes the mystery out of the process. It empowers the patient to be more involved in the pregnancy and provides a support system.” Group meetings start after the traditional visit around the 10-to-12-weeks mark. If you’re a candidate and choose Centering, you’ll meet with up to 11 other women due to deliver within a month of your date until about the 36-weeks mark, Whitaker said. Then you will return to the private setting until you deliver and return for a celebration after the babies are born. When the women come in, they take and record their vitals, Whitaker said. Then they can enjoy refreshments and talk while each individual goes behind a partition for “tummy time.” “This is when the physician MATT WALSH / THE SUMTER ITEM measures the woman’s belly

Boy, 15, reportedly shoots man in robbery attempt BY BRADEN BUNCH bbunch@theitem.com (803) 774-1201 A 15-year-old Dalzell boy has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a 27-year-old man during an attempted robbery Friday night. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the juvenile, whose name is being withheld, was attempting to rob a convenience store owner outside the

businessman’s home in the 2400 block of Peach Orchard Road when the suspect allegedly shot the son of the store owner, who had come out of the house to aid his father when he heard a commotion. “(The 15-year-old) evidently followed him (the store owner) home, and attacked him in the yard. And when the son of the store owner came out (of the home) to assist his dad, that’s when he shot the son,” Dennis said. According to the sheriff, the shooting

victim was struck in the right shoulder, and the bullet passed through his body without striking any major arteries. “He was very lucky,” Dennis said, adding the victim was taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center where he was treated and shortly thereafter released. The store owner also suffered some bruising but was not seriously injured. According to the sheriff, the juvenile
