Toddler’s drowning accidental BY BRISTOW MARCHANT bmarchant@theitem.com Sumter County Sheriff’s investigators are continuing to gather information about how a toddler visiting his grandparents wound up drowning in a pond, while results from the coroner’s report have confirmed the boy’s death was accidental. A forensics unit was at the scene of 2-year-old Byron Barr’s death Tuesday gathering evidence, including measuring the distance from the home where the child was staying to the pond, which is located several hundred yards from the house and on the opposite side of the BULLOCK street. Sheriff Anthony Dennis said his office was continuing to gather information on the circumstances surrounding the 2-year-old’s death to determine if any charges will be filed against the adults who were watching the boy. “Our findings will be forwarded to the solicitor’s office,” Dennis said. An autopsy on the child was performed Tuesday morning in Newberry to confirm the cause of death as drowning. Coroner Harvin Bullock said the results ruled out any possibility the death was anything other than an accidental drowning. “No signs of struggle, foul play or any kind of trauma,” Bullock said. Pathologists were not able to determine how long the child was in the pond before his body was discovered, but it was estimated the child had been gone 20 or 30 minutes before the body was found. The child was staying with his grandparents in the 100 block of Buckingham Boulevard on a visit from Rock Hill over Veterans Day weekend. His

While the shopping season seems to begin earlier and earlier each year, it doesn’t officially start locally until the Sumter Parade of Shops. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season,” said Katherine Brogdon. SEE SHOPPING, PAGE A8
