Pridgen’s future as Pinewood’s mayor unclear BY JADE ANDERSON janderson@theitem.com It isn’t clear how long Al Pridgen will remain mayor of Pinewood. In mid-October, he told The Item that he had been undergoing medical tests in North Carolina, and that while his stepson had sold the house he’d stayed at in Pinewood, the new owner was allowing him to continue to live in the home at 213 East Fulton St. until he got his results. Once he knew where his PRIDGEN health stood, Pridgen told The Item he would make a decision on whether to remain the mayor of Pinewood or move to North Carolina for treatment and to be with family. “I’ll have to make a decision on the mayorship in the next few days,” Pridgen said in SEE MAYOR, PAGE A8

Poll manager says no problems seen with new ID requirement BY JIM HILLEY Special to The Item With absentee votes yet to be counted, Annette Anderson and Kell Compton garnered enough votes to claim seats on the Mayesville Town Council in Tuesday’s election. In the vote, the top two candidates were elected. Sumter County Voter Registration and Elections Deputy Director Nathaniel Binbow said there were not enough absentee votes to change the results.

Anderson, who was first elected to council in a special election in April, was the leading vote getter with 122 votes, followed by Compton with 90 votes. Unsuccessful candidates were Mary Miller with 62 votes, Jerry Ward with 13 votes and Paul McCombs with 10. “I feel wonderful,” Anderson said. “I was able to finish out Selena Smith’s term, and now I am starting my own term and am ready to get to work.” “I want to thank those who had

Former school director Bobby Anderson, who led the school for 25 years, said he thought changing the name to the Sumter Career and Technology Center would reflect the new direction of the school. “It’s done a great job as the career center; however, a new name for it as the Sumter Career and Technology Center would be
