Spring onion sales provide new kicks for over 200 kids BY RICK CARPENTER rick@theitem.com If you bought onions from Rotary last spring, you helped put shoes on children in Sumter School District on Thursday. The Rotary Club of Sumter Palmetto sells Vidalia on-

Charlotte police refuse to release shooting video CHARLOTTE (AP) — Charlotte police refused under mounting pressure Thursday to release video that could resolve wildly different accounts of the shooting of a black man, as the National Guard arrived to try to head off a third night of violence in this city on edge. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said that releasing police dashcam and body camera footage of the killing of 43-year Keith Lamont Scott could undermine the investigation. He told reporters the video will be

made public when he believes there is a “compelling reason” to do so. “You shouldn’t expect it to be released,” Putney said. “I’m not going to jeopardize the investigation.” Meanwhile, an undisclosed number of National Guardsmen assembled in Charlotte, sent in by Gov. PUTNEY Pat McCrory after a second straight night of racial unrest that seemed at odds with Charlotte’s image as a diverse, forward-look-

ing banking capital of the New South. Charlotte is just the latest U.S. city to be shaken by protests and recriminations over the death of a black man at the hands of police, a list that includes Baltimore, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York, and Ferguson, Missouri. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday, prosecutors charged a white officer with manslaughter for killing an unarmed black man on a city street last week. In Charlotte, scores of rioters

A man and woman who were sought by Sumter Police Department for their connections to a non-fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man in July in Sumter were apprehended in Virginia on Wednesday. According to a news release from the police department, U.S. Marshals and Virginia authorities arrested Xavier Namir Chennault, 21, and Kiara Ashonta Johnson, 18, for their alleged roles in the shooting of Alphonso CHENNAULT Mack at his residence in the 400 block of Miller Road on July 20. Mack continues to recover from his injuries, states the release. Chennault and JOHNSON Johnson, both formerly of Virginia, were apparently acquainted with the victim and were last seen at a bus station in Columbia just after the shooting. A previous news release from the police department stated that Chennault may have been the last person seen with Mack before the shooting. Chennault, who was wanted for attempted murder, and Johnson, who was wanted for accessory after the fact, could face additional charges once they are returned to Sumter. Chennault also faces unrelated charges in Richmond, Virginia. An extradition hearing is pending.
