FOOD AND SPIRITS
Stroll downtown Sumter, visit businesses with Sip and Scream BY IVY MOORE Special to The Sumter Item
Wines from 14 different countries are on the tasting menu for Sumter Senior Services’ annual Sip and Stroll - renamed Sip and Scream for its proximity to Halloween this year. If you’re in search of some new favorites, be they red, white or more exotic, Sip and Scream is the place to be during the evening of Friday, Nov. 2. Sip and Scream also offers wine lovers the opportunity to visit downtown businesses and spend time with friends, Sumter Senior Services Executive Director Dana Strock said. Several improvements, including new businesses and structures, are on this year’s map. Many of them are not normally open in the evenings. The wine-tasting event will offer several Halloween-themed surprises this year, including decorations throughout downtown, strolling photographers and some areas designated for taking “selfies.” “We encourage people to wear their Halloween costumes,” Strock said. Several members of the Sip and Stroll committee and other volunteers will be in costume. Each of 14 businesses will be serving tastes of two wines from a designated country, so more than two dozen wines from France, Italy and Spain to New Zealand, Israel and Japan, California and even South Carolina will be represented. The only continent not included on the list is Antarctica. Light hors d’oeuvres will accompany the wine tastings. Once again Aleph Distributing of Columbia and Mac’s Place Spirits have worked together to provide an interesting wine list. Several of the venues will also have a variety of live music from some of the area’s finest musicians. Desserts prepared by Hamptons’ pastry chef and sponsored by the Main Street Society will be served beginning at 8 p.m. at Rotary Plaza on the corner of Main and Liberty streets. Dessert wines will complement the sweet delicacies. Sip and Stroll is the biggest fundraiser for Sumter Senior Services, which serves the community’s elderly. Strock said the event will benefit the nonprofit organization’s “meals on wheels” program, which provides nutritional meals to the area’s most vulnerable citizens. Currently, there

Despite a few small grants, the funds raised by Sip and Stroll are crucial to supporting home-delivered meals. Sip and Stroll participants should check in at Sumter Opera House, where they will receive a wrist band, a map of the venues and a wine bag containing an official tasting glass and gifts from some of the participating merchants. Strollers who get their maps signed at each tasting location will be eligible for a drawing for several valuable prizes. Tickets to Sip and Stroll are $30 in advance advance ticket sales end at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. At the door, the fee will be $40. Seniors and military will play $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Advance tickets are going fast, and there are a limited number. Designated drivers, who must be at least 16 years old, will be admitted for $10. They will be served only non-alcoholic beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Security will be provided by Sumter Police Department. Sip and Stroll/Scream will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in downtown Sumter. You’ll be full of energy and passion this week. Everything will feel like an emergency and you’ll need to act fast to avoid falling behind. The extra stress will be worth it: your efforts will pay off in the form of a bonus or a promotion.
returns for one final term Robin Wright and Michael Kelly star in “House of Cards,” which begins streaming its sixth and final season Friday on Netflix.
At the end of last season’s finale of “House of Cards,” newly minted President Claire Underwood refused a call from her husband, turned to the camera and proclaimed “My turn.” Now as the sixth and final season of the Netflix drama gets underway, we find out exactly what that means. Opening Friday, Nov. 2, with the award-winning drama series’ final eight episodes, the new season picks up a year after the events of last season, with Claire (Robin Wright) firmly entrenched in the Oval Office and her husband, former President Frank Underwood, dead and buried next to his father in South Carolina. In reality of course, Kevin Spacey, who played Frank for the first five seasons, was dropped from the series after last season due to allegations of sexual misconduct. So after considering all the options the decision was made to kill off the character offscreen, explain it in the opening episode and then move on to Claire and her presidency. “Part of the goal of the season,” explains showrunner Melissa Gibson, “(is) we wanted it to be for Claire one of reckoning with herself and her choices and her past (and) a look at who owns the White House. You know, a look at the power behind the power, and that’s partly where the Shepherds come in, the Greg and Diane characters.” The Shepherd siblings Bill and Annette, played by Oscar nominees Greg Kinnear (“As Good as It
LEO
BY GEORGE DICKIE Gets”) and Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”), are industrialist powerbrokers who share a vision for the future of the country and have a complicated past with the Underwoods. But most importantly, they have Claire’s ear and play a major role in her presidency and the season. Meanwhile, Frank’s demise has left his former chief of staff Doug Stamper devastated and finding it difficult to carry on without his mentor and de facto father figure. Early on in the opening episode, we see just how broken he is. “He’s truly lost for the first time in so many years,” explains Michael Kelly, who plays Stamper, “and his job, his world, everything changed when she became president to him last year. But it was a manageable thing because he always had Frank. He had purpose, he had drive. And so now she’s president and Frank’s no longer there and it’s like, ‘Oh my God! Where’s Frank?’ He’s a little lost. ...” “You know what’s really fun, though,” he continues, “is that for those people who are into that Doug/ Claire relationship, many people really like that. And you could see it last season. You could see them over the season, one pitting against the other and getting stronger and stronger, and ... you feel that tension building and so that was fun. “Obviously, some of that takes place in this season.”
You’ll finally be able to finish a longterm project that you’ve been putting off for ages. Get some rest before starting something new. Otherwise, your health may bear the brunt of the added stress.
VIRGO If you’re expecting medical test results for yourself or a loved one, you’ll be relieved by the answers you get this week. You’ll finally be able to sleep soundly knowing that everything will be fine in the long-term.
LIBRA You’ll have a few kinks to work out in your personal or professional life. If you get a promotion at work, you’ll need to rethink your schedule. Luckily, the extra money will make your compromise worthwhile.
SCORPIO It’s time to start planning your holiday get-together. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a giant party, make your reservations early to avoid disappointment.
SAGITTARIUS At work, you may find yourself in charge of managing or training new employees. At times, you might have difficulties communicating with someone who doesn’t speak the same language as you.
CAPRICORN You’ll focus your attention on your partner this week. Try to be more spontaneous when it comes to your relationship, and sparks will fly. You’ll need to make compromises if you wish to avoid conflict.
AQUARIUS You’ll need to put a lot of effort into an upcoming negotiation in order for all parties to be satisfied. A radical lifestyle change will soon be necessary if you want to ensure your health and well-being.
PISCES Great success is on the horizon. You may receive a promotion or start a new career. If you’ve been feeling under the weather lately, expect to regain your vitality this week.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Robert Redford’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “All Is Lost” (2013): Redford holds the screen by himself for the better part of two hours – no mean feat – as a sailor stranded at sea and eventually resigning himself to his apparent fate. “Quiz Show” (1994): Director Redford’s drama about the 1950s game scandals offers a great re-creation of the era and the show “Twenty-One.” “Out of Africa” (1985): Sydney Pollack, Redford’s frequent collaborator, won an Oscar for directing him and Meryl Streep in this true love story. “Ordinary People” (1980): Redford’s directorial debut – about a suburban family quietly coming apart – won Oscars for him and co-star Timothy Hutton, with the film named best picture. “All the President’s Men” (1976): As reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Redford and Dustin Hoffman make the Watergate scandal compelling all over again. “Three Days of the Condor” (1975): Redford goes on the run as the lone survivor of an attack on a CIA subdivision in one of the best espionage thrillers of its era. “The Sting” (1973): Redford’s screen reunion with Newman, a clever tale of Depression-era hustlers, led to another best picture Oscar win. “The Way We Were” (1973): “Streisand and Redford Together!” That ad line pretty much said it all about this enduringly popular romance. “The Candidate” (1972): Redford started to infuse his movies with his social conscience in this comedy-drama about a senatorial hopeful. “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969): His first teaming with Paul Newman, an Oscar-winning comedy-adventure about an actual outlaw duo, propelled Redford to stardom.
Sissy Spacek and Robert Redford
If “The Old Man & the Gun” turns out not to be Robert Redford’s farewell to acting, which it’s been positioned as being, any roles that follow for him may seem anticlimactic. That’s because the fact-inspired portrait of a career criminal who just can’t give up robbery, though time clearly is working against him, suits the veteran performer and activist so ideally. Besides being his own character, Redford’s Forrest Tucker (who shares a name with an actor largely remembered for television’s “F Troop”) folds in many reminders of other Redford alter egos – very particularly, the Sundance Kid. Tucker also is disarming in his own way as he goes about committing felonies, charming his victims while letting them know exactly what he’s there to do. He has felonious

‘The Old Man & the Gun’ polishes Robert Redford’s stardom
Mila Kunis and “Saturday Night Live” Emmy winner Kate McKinnon make a reasonably fun duo in director and co-writer Susanna Fogel’s comedy-adventure,
casting Kunis as the former girlfriend of a man (Justin Theroux) who turns out to be a spy. Trying to finish a mission for him makes her a target of killers who have been pursuing him, as she and her best friend (McKinnon) flee Los Angeles and race across Europe with the assassins on their trail. “Outlander’s” Sam Heughan plays another espionage operative who comes to their assistance. Gillian Anderson, Jane Curtin, Paul Reiser, Fred Melamed and comic Hasan Minhaj (“The Daily Show”) also appear. DVD extras: four

associates played (wonderfully, as usual) by Danny Glover and Tom Waits, but Tucker is the “old man” with whom director-screenwriter David Lowery (who also made the remake of Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” with Redford) principally is concerned. A nemesis is on the crooks’ trail, a much younger policeman (Casey Affleck) who makes it his sworn duty to catch them, though he also has a certain admiration for what they’ve been able to do for so long. Tucker knows he’s close to the end of his escapades, but that doesn’t mean he’s about to relinquish any of them that he still has left in store. For the many who know Redford’s body of work, there’s also bound to be nostalgia here for his nimble work as con man Johnny Hooker in “The Sting.” By all rights, that role should have gone to someone younger than Redford was at the time, but the potential to reteam him with Paul Newman proved irresistible ... and Redford pulled off the job with a surplus of charisma and energy. He does much the same thing in “The Old Man & the Gun,” and a major beneficiary of it is Sissy Spacek, also wonderful as a woman Tucker encounters on the highway while evading police. His natural charm immediately sweeps her in, though her eventual discovery of his profession dooms their connection. Which isn’t to say that they shouldn’t have made the connection, especially for viewers’ pleasure. “The Old Man & the Gun” has a number of marvelous elements, but it never loses sight of its primary purpose – to service Robert Redford, especially as his potential valedictory turn. It does that beautifully, and he gives it his movie-star all in return, making for one of the true joys the screen has to offer this year.

“THE DARKEST MINDS” Specially gifted youths who survived an American plague have to fight for their freedom in this sci-fi adventure. Imprisoned in camps by government forces, they organize into a resistance group to ensure that they’ll have a future. Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”) is the first among equals as the rebellious teens, with Mandy Moore as a doctor
who’s sympathetic to them and Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”) as the U.S. president. Harris Dickinson, Patrick Gibson, Gwendoline Christie and Golden Brooks also are featured in the adaptation of a young-adult novel by Alexandra Bracken. “THE ZEN DIARIES OF GARRY SHANDLING”: Director Judd Apatow’s lengthy, Emmy-winning HBO documentary examines the life, career and psyche of a late talent he knew well – or as well as he could, as the project explains. Shandling’s rise as a comedian and success in the series “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show” are detailed, but so are the demons that stayed with him throughout his life … and left whether he truly was able to enjoy his achievements a giant question mark. Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Nealon, Bob Saget and filmmaker James L. Brooks are among those whose comments punctuate the plentiful clips of Shandling in performance. DVD extras: extended interviews; archival performances. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P)
“SLENDER MAN” With an urban legend as its background – controversial to the extent that one theater chain near the location of a related tragedy wouldn’t show the film – this horror tale finds three young women trying to retrieve a mutual friend who vanished after dabbling in the occult to summon the title figure. Their loved ones are imperiled as the search progresses. Joey King (“The Conjuring”), Julia Goldani Telles (“The Affair”), Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso and Michael Reilly Burke are among the cast members, with Javier Botet filling the title role. ›› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“CHARMED: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” With a new version of the series having just started on The CW, it’s a measure of how revered the original version (produced by television mogul Aaron Spelling) is that its freshman year is getting a technically upgraded, wide commercial release on Blu-ray. Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs star as San Francisco-based Halliwell sisters Prue, Phoebe and Piper, witches who combine their respective abilities to form the Power of Three. The Book of Shadows helps guide them through their adventures, but two police detectives (T.W. King, Dorian Gregory) become suspicious about their frequent proximity to crime scenes. ››› (Not rated: AS, V)
