CBS special celebrates the Motown Sound’s 60th anniversary
VIRGO
The group Pentatonix teams with Smokey Robinson (at center) on Sunday’s CBS special “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration.”
Sixty years ago, a certain sound started making Detroit a home for some of music’s most iconic hitmakers. The Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and Martha and the Vandellas were among acts that did much to help the Berry Gordy Jr.-founded Motown Records build its name and its unique place in the industry. Its six-decade milestone is celebrated by some who made the songs – plus many famous peers and admirers – in CBS’ special “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration” Sunday, April 21. Recorded at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, the event features Motown originals Smokey Robinson (who co-hosts with Cedric
the Entertainer), Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Martha Reeves. Additional performers include John Legend, Ciara, Ne-Yo, Little Big Town, Meghan Trainor, Boyz II Men, Chloe X Halle, Tori Kelly, Fantasia, Thelma Houston and Pentatonix. Also appearing is Lamont Dozier, of the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland trio of producer-songwriters whose numerous 1960s classics born at “Hitsville U.S.A.” boosted the Motown Sound ... from Martha and the Vandellas’ “Heat Wave” and the Supremes’ “Stop! In the Name of Love,” to Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” and the Four Tops’ “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey
Bunch).” And that truly is to name only a few. “It was a fun time and a heavy work time, but it was all gratifying,” the pleasant Dozier says of his Motown partnership with siblings Brian and Eddie Holland, who also are seen on the special. “Three or four times, we had the blessing of having many hits on the charts by different artists at the same time. We just did things we wanted to do, and they all came out as winners.” Dozier confirms that, particularly in its early years, Motown was infused with a “family” feeling: “Some of the best times I ever had were from being in the studio with the Four Tops – sometimes at late hours, 3
or 4 in the morning, finishing an album. And telling jokes, eating barbecue and drinking Cold Duck. We made a party out of it.” Still, Dozier allows he and the Hollands weren’t as renowned by certain artists at the start. He notes Ross and the other Supremes “hated ‘Where Did Our Love Go.’ They thought it was a leftover nobody else wanted. The Marvelettes had turned it down, and they heard about it. They were low on the artists’ roster, though – and after a while, we convinced them to do it. It was an instant No. 1 hit, and 12 or 13 consecutive No. 1’s followed for them. That made Motown, and it also made the Supremes one of the top groups of all time.”
You’ll spend some of the week at home because your family needs you. You may also need to prepare for a move. You’ll start to think about buying or selling a property.
LIBRA
You’ll bite your tongue and think carefully about what you have to say this week. Your comments will have long-term impact and may even make their way around the world via the internet.
SCORPIO
You deserve to spoil yourself. You’ll spend lots of time shopping this week and a dose of retail therapy will help lift your spirits.
SAGITTARIUS
There will be lots of action in the coming days. Your perseverance and zeal will work to your advantage. A celebration is in order when your income increases considerably.
CAPRICORN
You may start to feel the weight of accumulated fatigue; a night of insomnia is enough to slowdown more than one project. New eating habits could be the solution to this ongoing problem.
AQUARIUS
At work, you’ll be responsible for organizing an important meeting. Your social life will be just as busy and you may participate in a sporting competition.
PISCES Don’t be afraid of a career change. New responsibilities could bring you better working conditions. Free time will be in short supply this week.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jennifer Garner’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Peppermint” (2018): Garner channels her “Alias” television days as a woman who goes off the grid after her husband and daughter are killed, then resurfaces, bent on – and trained for – revenge. “Miracles From Heaven” (2016): An affecting Garner plays the mother of a girl (Kylie Rogers) who has a near-death experience, then finds herself cured of a chronic illness. “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013): Garner lends the appropriate gravitas as the doctor who treats the AIDS patients portrayed by Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. “Valentine’s Day” (2010): In director Garry Marshall’s all-star cast, Garner is a standout as a schoolteacher who’s sure that the doctor she loves (Patrick Dempsey) isn’t deceiving her ... though a friend (Ashton Kutcher) knows better. “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” (2009): Garner is a particularly bright spot as the one ex-flame whom a womanizing photographer (McConaughey again) truly loves. “Juno” (2007): In one of the best-reviewed movies she’s been in, Garner plays the wouldbe adoptive mother of a pregnant teen’s (Ellen Page) forthcoming child. “Catch and Release” (2006): Garner fares nicely in the seriocomic tale of a woman trying to cope with her fiance’s death while becoming involved with his best friend (Timothy Olyphant). “Elektra” (2005): Every bit the heroine she’s meant to be here, Garner’s character was revived both literally and effectively, proving she didn’t necessarily need a Daredevil around. (Bonus points for the actress for holding her own against the great Terence Stamp.) “13 Going on 30” (2004): Garner is a charming lead in her first starring movie, playing an incarnation of a teen who makes a birthday wish that she was older – which then comes true. “Daredevil” (2003): In her first embodiment of the character Elektra (opposite later husband Ben Affleck in the title role), Garner justifies why a spinoff was created for her.

‘Wonder Park’ mixes fantasy and realism Certainly, there has been no shortage of animated movies lately, so one that has the title “Wonder Park” had better deliver on the wonders it promises. The picture gets there a fair amount of the way, and it should be noted up front that it has a rather unsettling undercurrent in the illness suffered by the central character’s mother (voiced by Jennifer Garner). Sensitive youngsters could be quite upset by that element, which might overshadow the possible enjoyment of anything that follows, so parents are well-advised to be prepared for that. Mom and her daughter June (whose voice is supplied by Brianna Denski) have conjured up shared thoughts of a fantastic amusement park called Wonderland, where virtually everything is possible. After her mother’s medical situation prompts her father (voiced by Matthew Broderick) to send June to camp, the girl decides to go AWOL en route and ultimately ends up at – chances are good that you’ll guess this – the actual Wonderland. However, the place isn’t quite as magical as she and Mom envisioned it. It’s in considerable disarray, and the animals that staff it (with voices supplied by Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Ken Jeong and “Saturday Night Live’s” Kenan Thompson, among others) can use all the help in restoring it that they can get. Enter June, and the road to recovery begins, of course. Co-produced by the cable network Nickelodeon, “Wonder Park” keeps pace with the kinds of visuals one might expect from a movie by its name. Despite the rundown look of the place in the middle portion, the segments that bookend it reflect a child’s (and, for that matter, a family’s) delight, supplying all the fun and escapism that anyone could hope for. And yet, the realism brought into “Wonder Park” makes it a mixed experience. Not only is there the mother’s situation in story terms, but behind the scenes, allegations of misconduct by the director led to the removal of his name from the film. It’s been released without any directorial credit, something very unusual in an industry that invoked the pseudonym “Alan Smithee” (or “Allen Smithee” in some cases) for many years to cover for a filmmaker whose name was taken off a picture for one reason or another. While the animated wonders it puts forth are within reason, “Wonder Park” has more to it, and how that impacts one’s overall impression of the movie likely will Wonderpark depend on the individual viewer. And, quite possibly, the viewer’s age. Michael B. Jordan
Jamie Lee Curtis
“DESTROYER” Nicole Kidman undertakes one of the most drastic image changes of her career by playing it tough – so tough, her husband Keith Urban told us he was somewhat afraid of her during the filming – in director Karyn Kusama’s (“Girlfight”) effective, underrated melodrama. The actress portrays a Los Angeles police detective struggling to overcome her tragic personal and professional pasts as they play into her current case. Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”), Bradley Whitford and Scoot McNairy also appear, but this absolutely is the impressively hard-edged Kidman’s show. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by Kusama and writerproducers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi; photo gallery. ››› (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • April 21 - April 28, 2019

The title pretty much describes the theme of this suspense tale, which draws several people together to vie for $10,000 by successfully navigating a series of rooms from which – you guessed it – they must escape. Lethal traps await them, and the group’s number of members steadily dwindles as most of them meet unfortunate fates. Included in the ensemble cast are Taylor Russell (“Lost in Space”), Logan Miller (“The Walking Dead”), Deborah Ann Woll (“The Punisher”), Tyler Labine (“New Amsterdam”), Jay Ellis (“Insecure”) and Nik Dodani (“Murphy Brown”). The film made such a big profit on a modest budget, a sequel is now in the works. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; alternate opening and ending. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“CHARM CITY” Making its home-video debut the same week PBS airs it as an “Independent Lens” offering, director Marilyn Ness’ acclaimed documentary spans three years in the life – and lives – of Baltimore, when violence had a particular grip on the city, encompassing the controversial death of suspect Freddie Gray while he was in police custody. Nevertheless, public officials and community leaders resolved to change the local climate, with young and energetic councilman Brandon Scott among the most prominent individuals leading that charge. Community-center operator Clayton “Mr. C” Guyton, whose illness had an effect on the balance of peace in the area, and several Baltimore police officers also are among major figures in the film. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P)
“ALIEN” One of the all-time-great science-fiction thrillers gets a new Blu-ray edition on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, in a package that also features the film’s first 4K Ultra HD version. Director Ridley Scott sends the varied members of a spaceship crew to a planet where they pick up an unwanted passenger – if you know the term “face-hugger,” you know who (or what) we’re talking about – and the eerie chills unfold from there. Very early in her screen career, Sigourney Weaver played destined-to-be-iconic astronaut Ripley in a solid cast that also includes Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Veronica Cartwright and Harry Dean Stanton. Scott’s audio commentary on both the 1979 and 2003 cuts of the movie are among the special features, along with veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith’s isolated music score and deleted scenes. ›››› (R: AS, P, GV)
“SHAMELESS: THE COMPLETE NINTH SEASON” Notable as the last round of the Showtime comedy-drama series to feature Emmy Rossum, who leaves the show (at least as a regular cast member) in the season finale, this collection of stories finds the Chicago-based Gallaghers trying to improve their respective lots. Fiona (Rossum) and Frank (William H. Macy, who also directed one of the episodes here) particularly venture outside their comfort zones, but as so often has been the case, unexpected circumstances threaten to get in the way of their plans. Guests include Courteney Cox, Bob Saget, Sharon Lawrence (“NYPD Blue”) and Dan Lauria (“The Wonder Years”). Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kennedy, Steve Howey and Jeremy Allen White also are among the show’s stars. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
“I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE: DEJA VU” Other actresses have starred in a remake (and its sequels) of the famously graphic, low-budget 1978 revenge drama “I Spit on Your Grave,” but this edition is a direct follow-up to the original. It returns star Camille Keaton – directed again here by the first film’s Meir Zarchi – to the role of an assault victim who distinctively evened the score with her attackers, but those she killed have been waiting to avenge the deaths of their relatives for a very long time. They kidnap her and her daughter (Jamie Bernadette), and what transpires will seem awfully familiar to anyone even mildly familiar with the franchise. Filmmaker Zarchi also has a co-starring role. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
