A spiritual movement could bring you the answers you’ve been looking for. CANCER You’ll be absorbed by an original idea that allows you to create your next masterpiece or to perform an act of generosity towards someone you know. LEO You’ll feel pressure at work but your active social life will help you blow off a little steam. You’ll be happy to organize an event that brings people together.
Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon’s relationship fuels FX drama series Director-choreographer Bob Fosse and danceractress Gwen Verdon fueled some of Broadway’s biggest hits, but they also shared challenges in life and love ... and all that jazz. Premiering Tuesday, April 9, the FX series “Fosse/ Verdon” casts Oscar winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) and multiple Oscar nominee Michelle Williams in the title roles. They’re also among the executive producers – as are “Hamilton” Tony Award winners Thomas Kail, who directed most of the drama’s eight episodes, and Lin-Manuel Miranda – with Margaret Qualley (“The Leftovers”) playing actress-dancer Ann Reinking, Norbert Leo Butz
as writer Paddy Chayefsky, Evan Handler as theater impresario Hal Prince, and Nate Corddry and Aya Cash (“You’re the Worst”) as playwright Neil Simon and his wife Joan. Represented as well (and played mainly by Blake Baumgartner) is Fosse and Verdon’s daughter Nicole, also one of the executive producers. Though the Roy Scheider-starring 1979 movie “All That Jazz” was inspired by her sometimes mercurial father (who co-wrote and directed it), she maintains Fosse “never claimed it to be autobiographical. It’s sort of a whitewashed, romanticized version of his life. I think this (series) goes much more deeply into what was really going on in his
relationships with Gwen and all of the people in his life.” Rockwell describes Bob Fosse, who directed such shows as “Chicago” and “Pippin,” as having been “a very complex guy, I think that there was maybe a little bit of narcissism, but also, I think he was a very kind man and a very charming man. Gwen was obviously his muse – and Ben Vereen was one of his muses, and Ann Reinking.” Fosse also directed Verdon in the musical “Sweet Charity,” and Williams reflects, “The thing I have kept hearing over and over again was that (Verdon) was like the sunshine in the room. The way that I’ve come to think of her is as someone who was always trying their hardest and
occasionally was backed up against a wall, and things weren’t in her control anymore. But as much as she possibly could, from what Nicole and other people have shared with me, she was constantly trying to rise above and be her best self at all times.” Kail assesses Fosse and Verdon as “maybe the most crystallized example of that kind of collaboration. They found each other, and as he started to accelerate, she had to find a different way to grapple with something that I think is very human: Who are you when you can’t do the thing that defined you? The dancer dies twice. They die when they stop dancing, and they die when they die, and that felt really rich for us to explore.”
VIRGO You’ll discover a path that brings you closer to achieving your professional goals. Training will help you attain or at least identify your objectives. LIBRA Let yourself get carried away when making plans for your next summer vacation. You’ll need lots of time to plan the perfect trip with your loved ones. SCORPIO You’ll feel more sensitive than usual and some rest will be necessary to avoid taking a situation too personally. You’ll consider taking a vacation to recuperate and balance your emotions. SAGITTARIUS It’s always easier to negotiate with people you aren’t emotionally attached to. This week, you’ll get along with everybody except your children. CAPRICORN Your professional sphere is expanding and you stand to profit from this. Trust your instincts and organizational skills and you’ll create a place for yourself among the biggest names in your field. AQUARIUS You’ll be praised for an accomplishment you view as ordinary. Even if it was seen as heroic, all you did was listen to a person in distress and help them. PISCES You’ll take care of your family, your home and everything else in your daily life. Professionally, you could start a business from home.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2017): Jackson is at his profane and amusing best as said hitman, guarded by a natural enemy (Ryan Reynolds) en route to testifying against a foreign dictator. “Lakeview Terrace” (2008): The bad-cop notion gets an impressive spin from Jackson, playing a policeman who relentlessly targets the new couple next door (Patrick Wilson, Kerry Washington). “Snakes on a Plane” (2006): Simply as the star vehicle it is, this self-explanatory thriller in the skies should remain one of Jackson’s best-remembered films. “Changing Lanes” (2002): In this underrated drama, Jackson is superb as a troubled man taking revenge on the fellow motorist (Ben Affleck) who caused him to miss a crucial court date. “Shaft” (2000): Even if it didn’t erase memories of the 1971 original, this privateeye update required an actor of consummate coolness to take over the title slot from Richard Roundtree – and Jackson was that actor. “The Negotiator” (1998): Jackson keeps things tense as a Chicago policeman who takes hostages while trying to clear himself of murder. “Jackie Brown” (1997): The title stewardess is caught between an arms dealer (Jackson) and the law in Tarantino’s gritty drama. “One Eight Seven” (1997): A powerful Jackson plays an inner-city teacher who takes on tough students. “A Time to Kill” (1996): Jackson is sterling as a man on trial for avenging his daughter’s assault. “Pulp Fiction” (1994): Among the all-time-great screen teams, count Jackson and John Travolta as hit men who wax philosophical when not claiming victims in Tarantino’s classic.

‘Captain Marvel’ does the Cinematic Universe proud It’s possible that the phrase “female empowerment” never has been more literal than in the case of “Captain Marvel.” Because it’s the first female-centric Marvel superhero movie, a lot of expectations are attached to the film – which can get in the way of simply enjoying it for what it is. And there is much to enjoy, including its timeperiod throwback to the mid-1990s and Brie Larson’s work in the title role whose alias is Carol Danvers, a military pilot destined for even greater things. Her background makes her much more than the average U.S. Air Force candidate, giving her superpowers to go along with her courage and determination. It also involves an alien species known as the Skrull, and you

just know from that name that they won’t mean anything good, for our heroine nor for the world at large if she doesn’t triumph. While the movie is called “Captain Marvel,” it also gives sizable attention to Samuel L. Jackson as a younger version of his Marvel-series staple Nick Fury. For whatever else the special-effects masters achieve here, it is no small feat to shave nearly 25 years off that actor and character and have the result be completely believable. That’s just one of the achievements of the “Captain Marvel” directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who get the license to do things not seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before. As the overall brand has made clear, with great power comes great responsibility, and they use theirs well. The presence of Jude Law (as a mentor of the title heroine) and Annette Bening (as someone whose true nature is best left as much of a surprise as possible) also lends cred to the movie. Enlisting them is as key as the involvement of such major stars as Michael Douglas and Jeff Bridges was in earlier Marvel ventures ... but in the end, this picture most needs a credible Captain Marvel. As it turns out, “Room” Oscar winner Larson fills that bill neatly. Her natural relatability goes a very long way, particularly in the portions of the story that aren’t earthbound. She keeps things grounded, and on that count alone, she earns her paycheck. The overall result is an entertaining Marvel package that sets new boundaries while still delivering familiar-feeling fun – and that may be the most marvelous thing about “Captain Marvel.”

“HOLMES & WATSON” With a heavy dose of satire added to an iconic premise, this spoof reteams Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly – who worked together several times previously (“Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby,” etc.) – as the legendary, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-created British sleuths. A murder suspect believed to be their arch enemy Professor Moriarty isn’t, so Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell) and Dr. Watson (Reilly) pursue the real Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes), who has plans for an even more sensational crime that could throw all of England into chaos. The humor here is pretty lowbrow, but it’s mildly interesting to see this sort of take on such a well-known franchise. Hugh Laurie (“House”) appears as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, with Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon, Kelly Macdonald, Steve Coogan and Lauren Lapkus also featured. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; “Line-O-Rama.” ›› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • April 7 - April 13, 2019

Director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis’ (“Back to the Future”) ambitious fantasy-drama – somewhat amazingly, based on a true story – takes the unusual approach of using dolls to convey the psyche of a photographer (played by Steve Carell, a good choice for the part) who suffers extreme stress in the aftermath of being assaulted. The cameraman invents a village named Marwen and uses the dolls to act out various roles mirrored by people in his life, casting himself as a World War II pilot, as he tries to steel himself to give a victim-impact statement at his attackers’ sentencing. Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever (“Nurse Jackie”), singer-actress Janelle Monae and filmmaker Zemeckis’ wife Leslie also are in the cast. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“ON THE BASIS OF SEX” A lot of movie attention has been paid to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the past year, and this drama covers much of the same material as the widely acclaimed documentary “RBG” while spending a bit more time on certain parts of her life. Felicity Jones (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) plays the then-law student who would become a professor, actively putting into play what she learned – and setting the stage for her later career – by taking on a civil-rights case referred by her tax-attorney husband (Armie Hammer). Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates also are in television-veteran director Mimi Leder’s noteworthy cast. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“MASTERPIECE: MRS. WILSON” Ruth Wilson (“The Affair”) gets to do something rare for a performer by delving into her own family history dramatically in this tale, getting a home-video release right after it ends its telecasts on PBS. Wilson plays her grandmother, who discovers after the death of her espionage-novelist husband (played by Iain Glen) that he secretly had a completely separate second family. With her grief suddenly compounded by doubts of how much he loved her – or even if he really did – she finds her distress mounting as she meets his previously unknown relatives. Keeley Hawes (“Masterpiece: The Durrells in Corfu”) plays his other spouse, with Fiona Shaw (“Killing Eve”) and Patrick Kennedy (“Boardwalk Empire”) also in the cast. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)
“DIRTY JOHN” Love goes wrong in a big way in this dramatized Bravo series, which recently was a substantial hit for the cable network. Inspired by a popular true-crime podcast about a murder investigation in tony Newport Beach, Calif., it stars “Nashville,” “Friday Night Lights” and “American Horror Story” veteran Connie Britton as a successful interior designer whose romance with a doctor (Eric Bana) moves fast – to the definite discomfort of her daughters (Julia Garner, Juno Temple). The younger women decide to look into his background, and what they learn about him makes them even more alarmed ... and their mother ever more vulnerable. Jean Smart also stars as the family matriarch, whose complicated relationship with her daughter doesn’t help matters. The show will have a second season, but with a different cast and story. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V)
“A DOG’S WAY HOME” Just from the title, it’s evident that a lot of pet lovers will take to this drama immediately. Directed by actor Charles Martin Smith (“American Graffiti,” “The Untouchables”) and adapted from the book by “A Dog’s Purpose” author W. Bruce Cameron (who co-wrote the screenplay), the film follows the grueling journey of Bella, a canine determined to reunite with a would-be medical student (Jonah Hauer-King) after they’re separated. Along the way, Bella – whose thoughts are voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”) – connects with a variety of people and animals, inspiring each of them as she tries to complete her quest. Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, Alexandra Shipp (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), Wes Studi and Barry Watson (“7th Heaven”) also star. ››› (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
