WEEK OF AUGUST 18 TO 24, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CANCER, LEO AND VIRGO

ARIES

A dynamic new beginning is underway. A job change or a move is on the horizon and you’ll be more than enthusiastic about the opportunity presented. You won’t be bored this week.

TAURUS

You’ll need more coffee than usual this week. Health wise, new treatments will help you find the quality of life you’re looking for. Stress might give you a boost of energy.

GEMINI

Stressful circumstances surround you and you have no choice but to tackle a major obstacle. You’ll find yourself listening attentively to many people. Your social circle will expand considerably.

CANCER

At work and in your personal life, everything will be urgent and need to be completed as of yesterday. Your friends will help you take your mind off things with a new activity.

The new documentary “I Am Patrick Swayze” premieres Sunday on Paramount Network.

LEO

In need of a vacation, you’ll start to plan an exciting family trip. Preparing everything in advance assures that it will be an unforgettable experience.

VIRGO

Paramount Network remembers Patrick Swayze on his birthdate Whether he was playing a dirty dancer, a compact-sized bouncer or a pottery maker’s ghostly helper, Patrick Swayze was a unique talent. Continuing the “I Am ... ” celebrity biographies that began on Spike TV and now carry forth on its successor, Paramount Network, “I Am Patrick Swayze” – premiering Sunday, Aug. 18, on what would have been his 67th birthday – profiles the late actor whose experience in dancing came in very useful for some of his most popular roles. His mother Patsy was a dance instructor, and his wife Lisa Niemi was one of her students. Here’s a look at some of Swayze’s standout credits. “North and South” (1985): Before movie fame kicked in for him, Swayze established a television presence through the first two of three miniseries based on John Jakes’ historical novels about two connected families on opposite sides of the Civil War. Ironically for someone who would become so famous for his physicality, Swayze’s character walked with a limp through much of this drama. “Dirty Dancing” (1987): Knowing how to dance meant everything for Swayze in landing the superstar-making part of Johnny Castle, the smooth-moving Catskills-resort teacher who refused to let Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) be put in a corner. Reportedly, Swayze’s agent was against his taking the job. You’ve heard the line, “Get a new agent”?

Swayze even scored a hit single off the film, “She’s Like the Wind.” “Road House” (1989): “I thought you’d be bigger.” Renowned Southern bar bouncer Dalton (Swayze) heard that a lot, but good things came in small packages ... particularly for the nightspot owner (Kevin Tighe, of “Emergency!” fame) who hired him to clean up his troubled business. Swayze also held his own against both Sam Elliott and Ben Gazzara, no easy feat. “Ghost” (1990): It’s bittersweet to watch Swayze’s performance as Molly’s (Demi Moore) deceased, beloved Sam in the aftermath of his own passing, but the actor’s innocent quality did much to make this Oscar winner (for its screenplay and co-star Whoopi Goldberg) a boxoffice dynamo. Fans returned to theaters time and again to experience this love story – and screen history’s most romantic making of a clay pot, with a mighty soundtrack assist from the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” “Point Break” (1991): In the category “Movies That Really Didn’t Need a Remake,” insert this adventure that has a big, enduring fan base, thanks in no small part to its truly breathtaking aerial acrobatics. As the ethereal robbery-gang leader Bodhi, Swayze had one of the best parts of his career, and it says a lot about his confidence that he didn’t mind playing a bad guy when his fame was at its peak.

Large-scale projects cause you to worry but perseverance is the key to success. Don’t be afraid to change your plans. Your emotions will rise to the surface, but a better view of the situation will calm you.

LIBRA

Before making a major decision, consult with everyone involved to get their okay. At work or in other aspects of your life, long negotiations will lead to a profitable agreement.

SCORPIO

If you’re worried about your health, it’s time to start taking care of yourself. By changing a few habits, you’ll have more energy and a new, contagious zest for adventure. Life is about finding balance.

SAGITTARIUS

One way or another, you’ll be in the spotlight. You might take charge of a group or defend your community. This will put you in an important position, which will be good for your self-esteem.

CAPRICORN

If you have young children, you’ll spend a lot of time preparing for the beginning of the school year. You might move or start to make big changes to your home. If you’re single, be prepared for love at first sight.

AQUARIUS

You won’t keep your opinions to yourself this week. Expressing what others are thinking will allow you to resolve an unpleasant situation. A member of your family will inspire you.

PISCES

At work, don’t be surprised when you’re courted by the competition. You’ll be running in all directions preparing your children for the beginning of the school year. A good friend may make a declaration of love.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Seth Rogan’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Long Shot” (2019): Rogen is terrific as a speechwriter recruited by a presidential candidate (Charlize Theron) who just happens to be his former babysitter. “Neighbors” (2014): With Rose Byrne as his wife, Rogen is quite funny as a family man who ends up in a showdown with the fraternity that has moved in next door. “This Is the End” (2013): Rogen plays a variation of himself, just as his fellow stars (including James Franco and Jonah Hill) portray versions of themselves, in this end-of-the-world comedy that he also co-wrote and co-directed. “The Guilt Trip” (2012): Barbra Streisand makes an intriguing acting match for Rogen in this comedy about a mother and son’s revelatory cross-country trip. “50/50” (2011): A delicate balance between comedy and drama is nicely maintained by both Rogen and central star Joseph GordonLevitt in this tale of a cancer patient. “The Green Hornet” (2011):

BY JAY BOBBIN

‘The Lion King’ roars anew in Disney remake By the time Disney is done with its current wave of remakes of its own animated classics, the only one left might be the Mickey Mouse short subject “Steamboat Willie.” There’s nothing wrong with doing that, of course, particularly with your own properties ... but the hope is that the result will be an entirely different experience, as familiar as the given tale may be. Technically stunning though it is, the revised version of “The Lion King” doesn’t supplant the traditionally animated 1994 original as the defining telling of the story – and there’s a certain comfort in that, since for so many fans, the first always will be “the one.” Still, give update director Jon Favreau big credit for using computer-generated imagery to the max in putting a more realistic sheen on the saga of lion Simba (now voiced in older years by Donald Glover), who tries to

In this offbeat take on the long-popular hero, Rogen is both heroic and amusing – not an easy combination to pull off – in the title role. “Funny People” (2009): Illness also comes into play in writer-director Judd Apatow’s comedy-drama about an ailing comic (Adam Sandler) and the newcomer he mentors (Rogen).

“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” (2008): Rogen and Elizabeth Banks make an

enjoyable team in Kevin Smith’s comedy about roommates who come up with a unique way – check the title again – to afford their rent. “Pineapple Express” (2008): One of Rogen’s most successful performances casts him as a murder witness who fears he can be traced by the drug stash he left behind. “Knocked Up” (2007): Rogen broke through to movie stardom as an irresponsible fellow faced with potential parenthood after his night with a television reporter (Katherine Heigl).

Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani

claim his birthright from his devious uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor). It’s notable that as Simba’s father Mufasa, James Earl Jones is the only member of the original voice cast to return. Let’s face it, no one else could equal nor surpass that actor’s singular intonations, and this film’s makers were smart to realize and accept that. Beyonce surely is a major addition to the cast as Nala, but arguably the most successful recasting is that of Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa. They are absolutely hilarious together here, as you would hope and expect from two experienced comedic talents. And everyone on board gets to give a new workout to the great Elton John-Tim Rice music score that includes “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Circle of Life.” Favreau used a very similar approach in revising “The Jungle Book” for Disney, though he did mix some live action into that project, and it’s always a bit mind-boggling to recognize that the director who takes on such staggering creative challenges also is the good-humored actor known for his on-screen presence in such pictures as “Iron Man” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” Whatever the overall effect, there only can be respect for the painstaking, time-consuming (three years, in this case) work involved for him. In the course of being visually flawless in what it tries to (and does) achieve technically, “The Lion King” also makes a trade-off in losing some of its organically stirred emotion. Watch this in awe, then, but never forget the enduring impact of the forerunner that made it possible.

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson

“THE HUSTLE” If the premise of this comedy seems familiar, it should. The tale was done twice before, first in the 1960s as “Bedtime Story” with Marlon Brando and David Niven, then as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” with Michael Caine and Steve Martin. The big twist in the latest version is that the competing con artists are women – played by Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson – and they’re so dissimilar, you’d have to figure the movie gets a lot of mileage out of their differences. It does, and as they portray the would-be swindlers of an app‘s developer (Alex Sharp), both stars do what they do best ... Hathaway playing it sly and refined, and Wilson again exercising her brash, no-holds-barred image. The overall plot has gotten a little creaky over 50-plus years, but even if it can’t overcome that mustiness, the actresses deserve credit for still giving it all they’ve got. DVD extras: three “makingof” documentaries; audio commentary by director Chris Addison. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

In this family-friendly follow-up to “A Dog’s Purpose,” based on another W. Bruce Cameron book, a canine – whose thoughts can be heard by viewers, as voiced by Josh Gad – is later reincarnated as other dogs who continue to play roles in the life of a young woman (played by Kathryn Prescott at her oldest age) as she goes through various stages on her way to adulthood. Those who love animals should be forewarned that there’s more than one tear-inducing moment here ... in fact, a number of them. Dennis Quaid and Marg Helgenberger, who also played spouses in “In Good Company,” are reunited; Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”), Johnny Galecki (“The Big Bang Theory”) and singer Henry Lau also appear in the picture, directed by TV-sitcom staple Gail Mancuso (“Modern Family”). DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Mancuso; deleted and extended scenes; outtakes. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE NINTH SEASON” Change certainly is a keynote of this year of the hugely popular AMC horror-drama series, with the biggest one involving Andrew Lincoln’s character Rick Grimes – whose eventual absence during the course of the season goes along generates strife among others, until they realize that joining forces is the only way to defeat a common threat. Lauren Cohan also has limited involvement here, since she would leave the show to make ABC’s now-canceled “Whiskey Cavalier”; among those who also return are Jeffrey Dean Morgan (as Negan, of course), Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Tom Payne and Josh McDermitt. Samantha Morton becomes an increasingly bigger presence as the episodes progress. DVD extras; five “making-of” documentaries; bonus scene; deleted scenes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray) “BRIGHTBURN” She’s been spending time lately as a game-show host on ABC’s “Press Your Luck,” but Elizabeth Banks is still very much in the business of making movies ... as the writer and director of a forthcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, and also as the star of this thriller. She plays half of a Kansas couple who take in a boy who fell to Earth, a young alien who grows up to be a possible menace by using his superhuman abilities against others. Jackson A. Dunn plays the older incarnation of the youngster, with David Denman and Meredith Hagner also appearing. “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn was a producer of the picture, which was written by his brother Brian and their cousin Mark. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by director David Yarovesky, cinematographer Michael Dallatorre and costume designer Autumn Steed; “Quick Burns.” ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MAYANS M.C.: SEASON 1”

Several weeks before FX begins televising the show’s second round, this successor to “Sons of Anarchy” makes its home-video debut. Executive producer Kurt Sutter’s saga of motorcycle gangs on the California-Mexico border continues to include some familiar names and faces from the earlier drama, but largely, this show weaves its own saga as J.D. Pardo (“Revolution”) plays a just-paroled ex-convict returning home ... and possibly joining the Mayans, former rivals of “Anarchy’s” SAMCRO biker club, as he tries to reconcile with his father (Edward James Olmos) and Mayans-member brother (Clayton Cardenas). Sutter developed this program with fellow executive producer and creator Elgin James, a musician whose own experiences with the gang culture help inform the show. Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Richard Cabral and Danny Pino also are among the cast regulars. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) “THE HARDER THEY COME” Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff’s distinctive, Jamaican-made 1972 classic returns to the public eye in a Blu-ray “Collector’s Edition” that boasts a new video transfer of the film. Cliff plays a would-be singer who falls under some bad influences as he tries to build a career in Kingston, and though he eventually makes his mark in music, he also draws the attention of rivals and the police with his side activities in the drug trade. With Toots & the Maytals also on the soundtrack, the picture was directed and cowritten by Perry Henzell, whose subsequent movie “No Place Like Home” – featuring Grace Jones and thought to be lost forever – also is included here, along with a new documentary about Henzell’s work. ››› (R: AS, P, V) “GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS” (Aug. 27)
