WEEK OF AUGUST 25 TO 31, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: LIBRA, SCORPIO AND SAGITTARIUS

ARIES You’ll have to work twice as hard to accomplish your goals this week. There’s a good chance you’ll be warmly applauded and congratulated for a brilliant achievement.

TAURUS Family life will demand a lot of energy, but luckily, you’ll get lots of gratitude in return. Those closest to you will feel confident around you. You’ll spend a lot of time at home.

GEMINI You’ll be on the move this week, playing taxi for your children. Don’t forget to bring your GPS or check the directions before you leave. You’ll get some news from someone abroad.

CANCER You’ll have some details to work out with your bank manager. Good communication sets the record straight in your personal life. This will give you more reason to break out of your shell and assert yourself.

LEO Lots of action lies ahead. You may even take up a new sport with someone interesting. Your love life will be an exciting adventure. At work, you’ll discover new ways to increase your revenue.

It’s society versus immigrants in Amazon’s ‘Carnival Row’ Someone is killing the faeries of The Burgue and Rycroft Philostrate is determined to put a stop to it. As played by Orlando Bloom (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies) in the Amazon fantasy series “Carnival Row,” which begins streaming Friday, Aug. 30, he’s a detective in a fantastical Victorian world in which humans coexist uneasily with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. In this society, these winged faeries are second-class citizens, indentured servants forbidden to live, love or fly with freedom. One of them is Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne, “Paper Towns”), with whom the human Philo had a passionate affair. Thinking he’d been killed years earlier, she still carries a torch for him but is at-first indignant to learn he’s still alive. Now as they rekindle their dangerous relationship, he must embark on his most important case yet: to investigate a string of gruesome murders threatening the peace on Carnival Row. And that setting, a grimy, grubby city street resembling something out of a Dickens novel and populated by soldiers, hawkers, police and prostitutes, was created in Prague. Here, the attention to detail is painstaking, which impressed the actors and made the story come alive for them, as they told a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif. “I honestly want them to make some sort of theme park,” Delevingne says, “or – I wanted people to come visit me all the time, because just walking through those sets – no matter

how cold it was in Prague – was the visceral, you could smell and hear, and just every room and every corner of everything had something.” “But there was the dead pig head on set,” Bloom adds, “that was stinking because it was rotting. It was actual dead pig heads (that had thawed out). ... I’ve been on some amazing sets over the years, and you know, ‘Lord of the Rings’ was always talked about for its authenticity. And nothing has really come close to it since I walked down the Row.” In this world, the “fays,” as they’re called, are immigrants or refugees looking to settle into a new society that doesn’t readily accept them, looks down on them and sees them as subhumans to be enslaved. All of this can be easily seen as an allegory for what’s happening today, as Bloom notes. “I think there’s so much fear in the world today,” the English actor says, “about the idea of refugees, migrants coming into society. What are they going to do to our society? How are they going to take jobs, drugs, thieving, whatever the preconceived notion is? ... And whilst it’s a fantasy world and these characters are fantastical, it’s so human, it’s so real, it’s so tangible you can’t not get the message. You can’t not look at it and take something away from it. And that’s the gift.”

VIRGO Avoid burning the candle at both ends, especially if your health isn’t at its best. Good time with friends will help you relax. You’ll discover a new spiritual approach that will improve your well-being.

LIBRA It’s time to update your work wardrobe. New clothes and a revamped look may help increase your self-confidence. Your creativity will be an asset in your professional development.

SCORPIO You’ll take a leading role in an important meeting at work or with your family. To your amazement, you’ll be calm under pressure and perform great feats that settle the problems around you.

SAGITTARIUS If you’re in school or undergoing training of any kind, you’ll find a professional path that corresponds with your dreams and values. A spontaneous trip may be planned.

CAPRICORN Your emotions will be all over the place this week. Take time to talk to your loved ones about your concerns. You’ll be surprised by their understanding, which will help put your mind at ease.

AQUARIUS It’s easier to get along with people you don’t have emotional attachments to. Avoid talking about money with family members. It’ll take patience to find harmony after a period of chaos and upheaval.

PISCES At work, you’ll find yourself dealing with an emergency. Put on your white gloves to deal with a particular colleague or client. You’ll also need tact and diplomacy to reach an understanding with some people, including your partner.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Leonardo Dicaprio’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “The Revenant” (2015): DiCaprio earned a best actor Oscar for this grueling, fact-inspired drama in which he gives a largely wordless performance as a 19th-century hunter abandoned by his companions and struggling to survive after being mauled by a bear. “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013): In his most recent teaming with director Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio is fierce and funny as a stock-market kingpin living to excess ... on both ends of the scale, ultimately. “Django Unchained” (2012): A stunning measure of DiCaprio’s growth is his work as a cruel plantation owner in this revisionist Western. “Inception” (2010): DiCaprio is a grounding force in director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi drama that unfolds between dreams and reality.

“Revolutionary Road” (2008): Reunited with “Titanic” leading lady Kate Winslet, DiCaprio had a much different role, an unhappy 1950s spouse. “Blood Diamond” (2006): Proving what a fine adult actor he’s matured into, DiCaprio is first-rate as a smuggler pursuing a certain gem. “The Departed” (2006): DiCaprio more than holds his own opposite such veterans as Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen, not to mention Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg, in Scorsese’s Oscar-winning saga of Boston cops and mobsters. “The Aviator” (2004): Also working with Martin Scorsese here, DiCaprio fashions a credible portrait of the young Howard Hughes. “Titanic” (1997): James Cameron’s blockbuster cemented DiCaprio’s stardom by teaming him with Kate Winslet as romantics of differing social status aboard the famously doomed ocean liner.

“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993): DiCaprio first stood out for many

Quentin Tarantino gives his take on late-1960s ‘Hollywood’ As celebrated as he is for his movies, Quentin Tarantino makes relatively few of them – so when he does, you can expect that you’re in for something unique. “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” surely is that, a whirlwind of late-1960s pop culture as seen largely through the eyes of a has-been TV-Western star and his former stunt double. In those roles respectively, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt bring all of the watchable qualities they’re known for, and that’s really helpful as they play a couple of guys who remain pals while living on the fringe. That lifestyle eventually puts them on a course to meet Charles Manson (portrayed by Damon Herriman), and the movie then takes an off-ramp into an exploration of one of the 20th century’s most infamous cults and heinous crimes. Brad Pitt

What’s really intriguing about “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” is how vividly entertainment connoisseur Tarantino satisfies his own passions as he gets to revisit them in his own way. If you have a soft spot for TV’s “The Green Hornet” or Dean Martin‘s Matt Helm movies, you’ll find nods to them here – the latter because the last of those spy adventures involved actress Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie as her ultimately tragic story is considered here. Also getting a lot of attention (to the likely appreciation of true TV fans) is “Lancer,” which was an actual, short-lived Western series. Timothy Olyphant (“Justified”) and, in one of his final roles, Luke Perry play that show’s stars, James Stacy and Wayne Maunder. The parade of stars here also includes Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch, Kurt Russell and Bruce Dern – and if you’re a devotee of the pop music of the ‘60s, you’ll appreciate how Tarantino chose his soundtrack. The featured artists range from the Rolling Stones and Paul Revere & the Raiders to Deep Purple and Vanilla Fudge. (Don’t recognize some of those names? Ask your parents. Or your grandparents.) It’s hard to say whether you’re better off approaching “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” with a knowledge of the time period it recaptures. It’s definitely that era as seen through the particular lens of Quentin Tarantino, and even if it doesn’t always fire on all burners during a running time that’s a little short of three hours, it surely is one of the most ambitious and admirable projects of the film season.

“THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2” As numerous sequels have confirmed, one good animated turn deserves another, so this enjoyable follow-up brings back many of the cartoon canines (and the actors who spoke their words) from the first film – and adds a notable one in Rooster, who sports the voice of Harrison Ford. Snowball (voice of Kevin Hart) is enlisted to tackle a major challenge by Daisy (voice of Tiffany Haddish), while Max (voice of Patton Oswalt, succeeding the original picture’s Louis C.K.) has to adjust to a new household situation and needs the help of Gidget (voice of Jenny Slate) and cat Chloe (voice of Lake Bell). Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”), Nick Kroll, Ellie Kemper, Hannibal Buress and “Saturday Night Live” alums Dana Carvey and Bobby Moynihan also lend their comedic talents vocally. DVD extras: six “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; “Character Pods”; “Super Gidget” and “Pets Yule Log” short subjects; two lyric videos. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “The Secret Life of Pets

Dexter Fletcher was brought in to finish the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” after the original director was fired, and he’s also the driving force behind this intriguingly stylized biography of Elton John. The drama draws an excellent performance from “Kingsman” veteran Taron Egerton as the singer-songwriter behind countless hits that have stretched from the 1970s forward. Flashbacks triggered by a group-therapy session cover John’s early life, with Bryce Dallas Howard as his mother and Jamie Bell as his longtime creative partner Bernie Taupin. Elton John himself is one of the executive producers here, and he deserves credit for allowing the amount and depth of the personal information included, with Richard Madden playing a key figure in that. Expectedly, the performance sequences are flashy, and also quite impressive with Egerton himself doing the singing – and you’ll certainly get the music you expect. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS” Every so often, the title character is reborn on the screen with special effects that get a little bit slicker and a human cast that gets a little bit stronger, and so it is with this latest rendering. Actually, Godzilla isn’t the only classic movie monster who gets an upgrade, since Mothra and Rodan are among the others also on hand ... all colliding in a massive battle to claim supremacy over the world, or what’s left of it when they’re done fighting. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) have major roles here, with Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, David Strathairn and Ken Watanabe lending support in a rather esoteric gathering of performers. And that’s not even counting the monsters. DVD extras: 17 “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by director Michael Dougherty; deleted scenes. ››› (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Bluray and On Demand) “APOCALYPSE NOW FINAL CUT” In its 40th-anniversary year, director and (with John Milius) co-screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola’s classic and controversial Vietnam War drama – inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novella “Heart of Darkness” – gets an elaborate home-video relaunch, in a definitive edition newly restored from the film’s original negative. The drama’s debut in the 4K Ultra HD format is featured as the epic weaves the story of an Army captain’s (Martin Sheen) mission to assassinate a colonel (Marlon Brando) who has gone rogue deep in Cambodia. Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Frederic Forrest, Laurence Fishburne, Harrison Ford and Scott Glenn also star. Both the theatrical cut and the extended cut of the movie also are included, along with a bounty of special features on the Blu-ray version such as the acclaimed “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse” documentary that Eleanor Coppola made about her husband’s huge undertaking. ›››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “A MILLION LITTLE THINGS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” Though it seems to owe more than a bit to “The Big Chill” thematically as it begins, this ABC drama series – which will return soon for Season 2 – then goes its own way with rich characterizations and story developments that aren’t predictable. The suicide of a Boston businessman (Ron Livingston) leaves those close to him devastated, certainly including his wife and teenage daughter (Stephanie Szostak, Lizzy Greene), but there’s a lot about him that they and others didn’t know. Friends include a cancer survivor (James Roday, “Psych”) determined to help a new love interest (Allison Miller) through her own health challenge, a music teacher (David Giuntoli, “Grimm”) with a complicated family life, and a chef (Christina Moses) with her own culinary dreams. Romany Malco, Christina Ochoa and Grace Park also are principal members of the final ensemble cast. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)
