Dascha Polanco (left) and Danielle Brooks
Prison life goes on at Litchfield as ‘OITNB’ enters its final term When “Orange Is the New Black” first premiered in 2013, streaming was the great unknown. No one knew if the idea would catch on nor did they even have the foggiest notion as to how such a beast would be shot. But after reading impressive scripts, respected actors such as Taylor Schilling, Kate Mulgrew and Laura Prepon took flyers and signed on, if for no other reason than to satisfy their curiosity. Six years later, creator Jenji Kohan’s dramedy about the female inmates at upstate New York’s Litchfield Penitentiary begins its seventh and final season as one of streaming’s most successful series, earning multiple awards and garnering a loyal fan base. Its final batch of 13 new episodes drops Friday, July 26, on Netflix. “I was definitely curious about this whole new concept,” recalls Dascha Polanco, who has played inmate Dayanara “Daya” Diaz since the series’ premiere. “... For me, it was my first experience on a show. I didn’t know what else to compare it to. I did guest star (roles) on other shows but this was my first series, so I had nothing to compare it to. ... We filmed it in a matter of a couple, six months, we had long day shoots. You know, it’s an hour and it goes. I hadn’t been on a network or on a sitcom or anything like that, so for me I had nothing to compare it to.” The new season finds the ladies of Litchfield coming to terms with the fact that prison life has changed them forever.
Piper (Schilling), released at the end of last season, finds life on the outside hard, even while living with family, as she tries to get time off from work to to visit wife Alex (Prepon) at Litchfield. Taystee’s (Danielle Brooks) friendship with Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) is in doubt as the former’s life sentence looms, while Gloria (Selenis Leyva) and her kitchen staff are forced to deal with the harsh reality of Polycon’s newest revenue stream. Some pursue drugs or dreams while still others cope with the fact that prison is their life now. Among them is Daya, who is serving a life sentence for a prison guard’s murder and is also now in the throes of drug addiction. “I think that for (Season) 7 we will definitely see a continuation of where Season 6 ended,” Polanco says. “Obviously, we know that she found a new habit with the drugs and we will see how ... sometimes we tend to fall into a cycle without having any control over it and we don’t know how to get out. So there’s a lot of moments of realization of it is what it is and you can’t fight it. “This is the outcome,” she continues, “it’s not a fairy tale and I think that they did it very gracefully in Season 7 where it’s the end, we’re wrapping things up but also things don’t necessarily wrap up when you’re incarcerated. You know, some people have long sentences and some don’t, and we’ll get to see that.”
VIRGO
The idea of a trip will take root this week. You may even be inspired to make a pilgrimage. You’ll open yourself to spirituality by practising new techniques.
LIBRA
You’ll have to deal with strong emotions this week. People will take advantage of your generosity. Try not to go past your financial or physical capabilities. Fatigue and stress don’t go well together.
SCORPIO
You’re not always the most accommodating person, but luckily, you know how to create harmony around you. Like the adage says, the ends justify the means. Your popularity may mean that you have to choose between two interesting invitations from friends.
SAGITTARIUS
You won’t take any time off until you’ve completed every task on your to-do list. You’ll be particularly proud of a big clean-up or work done around the house. Your family will need your help this week.
CAPRICORN
Self-esteem is essential to developing one’s personality. You’ll accomplish something that you’re proud of and that takes you far. If you’re single, your newfound confidence will attract the attention of your future partner.
AQUARIUS
You don’t need to travel to have a great vacation. Some of the best times are spent at home with friends and family. A little organization is all it takes to bring everyone together.
PISCES
You won’t be able to stay still this week and you’ll have lots of stories to tell. You’ll spend hours getting to know people from all walks of life. Your thirst for knowledge is insatiable.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Tom Hanks’ Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Captain Phillips” (2013): Hanks gives a thoroughly gripping performance in the title role of this true story of a ship overtaken by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. “Toy Story 3” (2010): He may have been a star of it in voice only, as toy cowboy Woody, but Hanks was part of what is sure to remain considered one of the most affecting animated films ever ... all the more remarkable for a franchise on its third round. “Cast Away” (2000): Considering that his sole co-star for much of the film is a volleyball, Hanks’ talent is invaluable to this saga of a courier company executive stranded on an island by a plane crash. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Under Oscar winner Steven Spielberg’s direction, Hanks is the perfect everyman in representing a U.S. soldier in charge of others amid the horrors of World War II.

‘Toy Story 4’ sends the series out in emotional style Even with the bounty of animated movies there has been since “Toy Story” began, the tales in that franchise always have stood apart ... even against other product that also has come from Disney-Pixar. Therefore, do not worry that “Toy Story 4” is a case of going to the well once too often. Not only is the final film in the series as effective as its forerunners, it just might leave you an emotional wreck. (I say that from experience.) The picture’s main theme explores what happens when your time supposedly is up, which is the dilemma of cowboy Woody (again voiced by Tom Hanks), whose new owner is less interested in him than in a makeshift doll she has fashioned from a spork. It has the voice of “Veep’s” Tony Hale, and it’s seen by Woody as his avenue to becoming useful and wanted again.
“That Thing You Do!” (1996): Even more as writer-director than co-star, Hanks paints a warm portrait of a fictitious ‘60s rock band’s rise and fall. “Forrest Gump” (1994): Hanks earned his second Oscar as he took the iconic title character through encounters with others real and fictional. “Philadelphia” (1993): Oscar came calling the first time for Hanks for his fully felt portrayal of a lawyer with AIDS suing his former firm. “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993): The template for Hanks’ work as a romantic leading man marked one of his memorable teamings with Meg Ryan. “Big” (1988): The childlike spirit Hanks exudes is crucial to this comedy about a youngster who gets his wish to grow up overnight. “Splash” (1984): Hanks made a big splash himself in the comedy that made him a movie star, casting him as an ordinary guy in love with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah).
‘Toy Story 4’
Expectedly, it’s not quite that easy, and that gives “Toy Story 4” the means to yield the traditional mix of clever visuals and heart-tugging character development. Of course, Tim Allen also is back as the voice of Buzz Lightyear, and Annie Potts gets special kudos as she reprises the part of Bo Peep very affectingly. Even the sound of the late Don Rickles is worked in again as virtually all of the regulars get to take curtain calls. Notable among cast newcomers are Keanu Reeves as a motorcycle-daredevil toy and Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men,” “Good Girls”) as a doll in search of a new voice box, and there’s also a welcome reunion of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, if in voice only. Listen, too, for assorted showbusiness titans (on the order of Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett, Betty White and Carl Reiner) along the way. Since “Toy Story” also has sired some TV specials and a merchandising bonanza, it’s a rather bold move for Disney to end it now ... but the fact is that it truly never will be over. The existing movies will be cherished for generations, so actual toys of Woody and Buzz will remain quite marketable. And with the overall profits made by the franchise (including the considerable ones being added now by “4”), it’s not inconceivable that we may yet see more “Toy” stories somewhere down the line. However, if this is indeed the end, “Toy Story 4” takes the series out exactly as it should – while very possibly being the most moving experience you’ll have at the movies this year.
“ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL” With such proven filmmakers as James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez behind it, you’d figure this futuristic adventure would be something unique ... and it is that visually, thanks especially to the title character, taken from a manga comic-book. Christoph Waltz plays a doctor who assembles odds and ends into Alita, who has the memory of a fighter and is played via motion-capture by Rosa Salazar. She becomes involved in a brutal contest that can gain you entry into an elite society – if you don’t get killed in the process. As if the game isn’t tough enough, schemers played by Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali are plotting its outcome, which does not spell good things for Alita. Beyond the cast filled with Oscar winners, the style is the biggest selling point here, with bountiful action that’s frantic and CGI-enhanced enough to mirror the Rodriguez-made “Spy Kids” movies. Initiated as a sequel but ultimately turned into a full (and not entirely necessary) reboot without the participation of filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and star Ron Perlman, director Neil Marshall’s frequently violent take on the Dark Horse comic features a heavily made-up David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) in the title role of a decidedly unusual government operative who deals in the paranormal. The trail is quite gruesome as Hellboy tries to negotiate his way across a path lined with enemies and presumed friends who may or may not be traitorous. Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim and Thomas Haden Church also appear – but, as usual in a case like this, the members of the makeup and art departments also deserve credit as stars. DVD extras: deleted scenes; “previsualizations.” ››› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MISSING LINK” One of numerous animated features of late, this tale is bemusing without being magical – a combination that may satisfy older viewers but leave younger ones wanting. The title character is a Sasquatch literally named Link, and voiced by Zach Galifianakis; he’s found by an explorer who has the voice of Hugh Jackman, and once the two meet up, the two set off on a revised quest together toward the place where the bigfoot ultimately wants to settle. The animation is at once lovely and abstract, and the voice cast is intriguing, with Zoe Saldana, Timothy Olyphant, Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry also heard. As technically fine as it is, connecting with viewers fully on an emotional level is the link this really is missing. Of movie-history note, this picture relaunched a legendary Hollywood brand in its 100th-anniversary year under the slightly augmented name United Artists Releasing. DVD extras: seven “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by writer-director Chris Butler; photo gallery. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MANIFEST: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON”

It’s tougher than ever these days for a new television series to launch as an out-of-the-gate hit, but this one did. The NBC drama – which will return at midseason, so it can air without having to be split into two chunks, as this first year did – follows some of those aboard an airliner that mysteriously landed more than five years after it took off, while others had presumed those on board were lost forever. A New York police detective and her brother (Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas) are among those who struggle to assimilate back into their daily lives while trying to figure out the phenomenon that took them off the radar, in every way possible, for such a long time. Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (“Back to the Future,” “Forrest Gump”) is among the show’s executive producers; cast members also include Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise and Jack Messina. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “CRITTERS ATTACK!” If you remember the original “Critters” horror-comedy movie that dates back more than 30 years, you’ll find that relatively little has changed in this fifth installment in the series – even including the star, since Dee Wallace is back from the first picture. The furry, hungry and lethal aliens known as Krites are back on Earth, generating plenty of mayhem as they pursue new targets including such energetic young people as a babysitter (Tashiana Washington) and her charges (Ava Preston, Jack Fulton, Jaeden Noel) who don’t quite understand what they’re up against. But they’ll learn ... oh, they’ll learn. ›› (R: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
