‘Grand Hotel’
opens for summer business on ABC As a setting that can service many characters and plots over a long span, one of the best is a hotel. Eva Longoria knows it, since the “Desperate Housewives” alum has chosen it – as an executive producer, a sometimes director and a guest star – for “Grand Hotel,” an ABC series premiering Monday, June 17. Sharing the title of a classic movie that won the 1932 Oscar for best picture, the new show is quite contemporary as a Miami Beach resort’s owner (played by “Weeds” and “The Bridge’s” Demian Bichir) mulls selling the site, while his grown children and his employees have dramas of their own. “This was a format from Spain,” Longoria explains, “and it was a period piece, and we contemporized it to modern-day Miami. It has a lot of themes of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs,’ but we thought it was very unique to have the ‘upstairs’ be a Hispanic family and to show a different community. It’s based in Miami, so we’re authentic to that world. Nine of our 11 (regular) cast members are people of color, so we’re really proud of the adaptation that we did.” “Grand Hotel” also features Roselyn Sanchez (“Without a Trace”), Bryan Craig, Wendy Raquel Robinson (“The Steve Harvey Show”), Denyse Tontz, Lincoln Younes, Anne Winters (“Tyrant”), Shalim Ortiz, Chris Warren, Feliz Ramirez and Justina Adorno. That many actors should
infer a variety of subplots, which range in this case from a secret pregnancy to a revenge plot against the hotelier. As the figure at the center of “Grand Hotel,” Bichir reflects, “This is my third time on American TV, and basically, I respond to the same thing. I’m looking for strong material whether it’s TV, films or theater, and that’s what I found here. To me, it’s about the human experience ... and who’s in charge of (the given project). And I love Eva. No one can say ‘no’ to Eva. A great, powerful captain can lead such a big ship into a happy port.” Cast as Bichir’s “Grand Hotel” wife, Sanchez also is a major Longoria supporter, saying she’s “eternally grateful” for having benefited from the actress-producer’s influence. Longoria claims Sanchez “taught me everything I know. The only reason I’m here is because of Ros.” In turn, Sanchez deems Longoria “one of my dear, dear friends personally, and to see her grow and become who she has become, which is such an important figure for the Latino community and the business – it’s wonderful to get that phone call (from her) saying, ‘I have this new project, and I see you doing it. Will you take this ride with me? She’s done it many times, and I hope it continues.”
You’ll feel determined to improve your figure for the summer and this will have a positive effect on your overall health. It’s the perfect time to change your routine.
VIRGO
People would be wise to pay attention to what you have to say. There’s a good chance you’ll share something that will stick with them for a long time. Your words may travel far and wide over the internet.
LIBRA
Important developments are afoot, both in your home and with your significant other. You might decide to move in with a new partner, have a baby or rebuild your family.
SCORPIO
You won’t be afraid to say loud and clear what others are silently thinking. Fortunately, wisdom and maturity will help you be diplomatic and choose your words with care.
SAGITTARIUS
You’re going to have some trouble controlling your spending when you find yourself in a shop you love. It would be wise to become more spiritual and less material in your outlook.
CAPRICORN
You’ll accomplish a feat that will make you proud. If you’re single, expect to encounter your soul mate, or at least to start talking about the future with an intriguing new partner.
AQUARIUS
You’ll realize the importance of being healthy and start living in the moment. This should be a week of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.
PISCES
Not everyone is good at managing stress. It’s best to accept the situation and avoid swimming against the current. You’ll have a major flash of inspiration while in a creative headspace.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Keanu Reeve’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Knock Knock” (2015): A real change of pace for Reeves, this drama of an on-his-own family man who makes the mistake of opening his door to strangers is completely harrowing. “John Wick” (2014): Reeves is effectively moody as a former hit man who dusts off his skills to seek revenge against those who viciously attacked him. “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003): Reeves rises to the occasion opposite some old pros, playing a young doctor who becomes Jack Nicholson’s unlikely romantic rival for Diane Keaton. “The Matrix” (1999): One of the blockbusters in Reeves’ career thus far, the filmmaking Wachowskis’ hugely original fantasy makes his character the hero of an alternate, high-tech world.
“The Devil’s Advocate” (1997): Just for enduring Al Pacino’s nonstop homestretch yelling, Reeves deserves credit for this melodrama about an attorney who discovers his boss’ true identity. “Speed” (1994): Here’s the other Reeves blockbuster, a smartly plotted thriller that sets up his L.A. cop against a vengeful bomber (Dennis Hopper) whose device will destroy a passenger-packed bus if it goes slower than 50 mph.

Keanu Reeves fires up ‘John Wick’ again for Round 3 The “John Wick” action movies certainly know their audience by now, so it’s no shock that “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” amps up the mayhem to the point of making heads explode ... perhaps not literally, but it comes close enough to that. Keanu Reeves remains ideally cast as the hit man of few words but lots of lethal moves, whose first adventure – not unlike “Lethal Weapon” – was a modest success initially, but kept building its renown in post-theatrical markets. Playing off events in the previous film, Wick now finds himself the target of many other assassins after committing a killing at a New York hotel that was supposed to be off-limits for such an act. With a huge bounty on his head and lots of people eager to claim it, Wick then
“My Own Private Idaho” (1991): Reeves and River Phoenix are solidly intense as male hustlers. “Point Break” (1991): Reeves is perfect as an athlete-turned-FBI agent sent to infiltrate the gang of a bank-robbing surfer (Patrick Swayze).
“Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989): You may not expect to find this goofy comedy on the list, but Reeves and Alex Winter are downright iconic as the dim-bulb time travelers.

goes on the international run to stay alive. Landing in Morocco, he gets particular help from a shady woman from his past, played by Halle Berry – who finds more good uses for her very physical training from “Die Another Day.” Seeing her do her thing here makes one wish she’d gotten the Jinx spinoff that her caper with James Bond was supposed to have yielded. Anjelica Huston also plays a Wick helper, if a somewhat reluctant one, and an expected standout on the side of the enemies is Asia Kate Dillon of television’s “Billions” – the brilliant but duplicitous Taylor Mason on that show, and equally and delightfully unpredictable here as someone keeping a very close watch on Wick. The set pieces in “Chapter 3” are quite dazzling as staged by returning director Chad Stahelski (a stunt veteran who doubled for Reeves in “The Matrix”), with an especially notable one placing Wick aboard a horse in a battle with travelers who use other means to move. Much of the enjoyment here comes from observing Reeves’ ongoing commitment to his role; no matter how incredible what’s asked of him is, he’s in it to win it, and that goes a very long way in such situations. Ian McShane and Reeves’ “Matrix” crony Laurence Fishburne also are present again, but as in the earlier “Wick” ventures, dogs might be the cast members most beloved by the audience (much as they are cherished by the title antihero). You wouldn’t expect that from something as generally frantic as “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” but that’s still part of the fun of the series zigging when you expect it to zag.
“US” It’s long been advised not to eat right before you go to bed, and you shouldn’t watch this movie just before doing that, either. Oscar-winning writer-director Jordan Peele’s next film after “Get Out” aims to be as surprising and unsettling, and it comes close to grabbing that brass ring in telling the story of a family with evil look-alikes who stage a home invasion. The task for the principal actors is to play two versions of the same character – the main one and that person’s doppelganger – and a lot of that heavy lifting falls to another Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave,” as the family matriarch. As the man of the household, Winston Duke also fares quite well on that count. Other characters are woven in along the way, including one played by Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men,” “The Handmaid’s Tale), but Peele is the most successful here when he stays focused on the main characters at the tale’s ultimately horrifying center. DVD extras: five ”making-of“ documentaries; extended and deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

The title gives this animated, Nickelodeon-co-produced feature a lot to live up to ... and it gets there a fair amount of the way, though it also has a rather unsettling undercurrent in the illness suffered by the central character’s mother (voice of Jennifer Garner), which sensitive youngsters could be quite upset by. Mom and her daughter June (voice of Brianna Denski) have conjured up shared thoughts of a fantastic amusement park called Wonderland, where virtually everything is possible. After her mother’s medical situation prompts her father (voice of Matthew Broderick) to send June to camp, the girl goes AWOL and ultimately ends up at the actual Wonderland, which isn’t quite as magical as she and Mom envisioned it. Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Ken Jeong and Kenan Thompson are among those who voice the animals that staff the place, and that can use all the help in restoring it that they can get. And yes, June is on board for that. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“KILLING EVE: SEASON TWO” In the sophomore round of one of the most acclaimed television series of recent years, government operative Eve’s (Sandra Oh) actions against professional killer Villanelle (Jodie Comer, who won a BAFTA Award for the role last month) at the end of Season 1 have ongoing effects – and suffice it to say that anything that might have seemed inevitable isn’t. Even though the two women seem to be on separate paths when this round starts, their paths will cross again, though it may take some time for that to happen. A winner of Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her acting in the show’s first season, Oh also is a co-executive producer of the BBC America drama, which earned a Peabody Award; Fiona Shaw, another BAFTA victor several weeks ago, also stars as an official of the spy organization MI6. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
“PATRICK MELROSE” Benedict Cumberbatch received a recent BAFTA Award for his utterly contemporary – and disturbing – work in this effective Showtime-limited-series adaptation of five novels by British author Edward St. Aubyn, who applied many of his own experiences to Patrick’s journey from an abuse-fraught childhood into an adulthood of overcoming addiction and struggling to live his best life. Each of the five hourlong episodes covers one of the books; there’s rarely a dull moment. Also an executive producer of the drama (which scored five Emmy nominations), Cumberbatch gets impressive backing from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving as Patrick’s unsupportive parents, and Allison Williams as one of the women who crosses Patrick’s path. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM R, 2 hr 11 min Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller

THE INTRUDER (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 42 min Suspense/ThrillerSuspense/Thriller
The 2008 terrorist attacks staged across the Indian city of Mumbai – with the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel among the targets – are dramatized in director and co-writer Anthony Maras’ tense film. Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”) plays a waiter who gets caught in the tumult at the hotel, trying to keep guests safe and help police get the information they need to stop the lethal invaders. Armie Hammer also stars as an American visitor, the husband of a foreign heiress (Nazanin Boniadi, “Counterpart”), who relies on his own wits and courage to try to help defuse the situation. Portraying a specialforces veteran, Jason Isaacs is in the international cast as well. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“UNIVERSAL HORROR COLLECTION VOL. 1” Several of the early, classic tales of terror produced by Universal Pictures – with two of the truly legendary stars of the genre, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi – are compiled in this Blu-ray collection that offers audio commentary by film historians, and documentaries about (and photo galleries for) the making of each included film. “The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” “The Invisible Ray” and “Black Friday” are the featured attractions culled from the 1930s. Of particular note among the extras are an examination of screen versions of Edgar Allan Poe tales, and separate audio recordings of both Karloff and Lugosi reading Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” ››› (Not rated: AS, V)
