How Roger Ailes changed cable news and American politics in Showtime’s

‘The Loudest Voice’

Roger Ailes saw Fox News’ mission as providing “a positive message, an American message, wrapped up in a conservative viewpoint.” As history tells us, he and the cablenet did a whole lot more. The story of how Ailes molded Fox News into a media powerhouse and in the process changed the political conversation in this country is told in the Showtime limited series “The Loudest Voice,” premiering Sunday, June 30. Under heavy makeup and prosthetics, muscular actor Russell Crowe (“Cinderella Man,” “Gladiator”) fairly disappears into the skin of the rotund Ailes, who died in 2017 after being forced to resign from the network amid sexual harassment allegations, while Sienna Miller (“Factory Girl”) is also unrecognizable as Ailes’ wife Beth. The series follows Ailes’ stewardship of Fox News after being hired in 1996 by News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch (Simon McBurney, “The Theory of Everything”), creating a corporate culture marked by intimidation, paranoia and an us-versus-theoutside-world attitude. Among those under his command are his PR guy Brian Lewis (Seth MacFarlane, “The Orville”), who did Ailes’ dirty work; his assistant Judy Laterza (Aleksa Palladino, “Boardwalk Empire”) and his booker Laurie Luhn (Annabelle Wallis, “Peaky Blinders”), one of his lovers. Crowe portrays Ailes as a brilliant megalomaniac who abused employees, sexually harassed women and had no tolerance for anything left-leaning or politically correct. Conversely, this family man from humble beginnings in the Rust Belt of Ohio wanted to make America great again and he would use his pulpit at Fox News to do it by any means necessary. “Roger was like many in his era,” explains director Kari Skogland, “very entitled and empowered to abuse situations and to abuse his

power. And he obviously took it into political arenas and abused his ability to sway the public. But having said that, I think he was the first to identify the true power of television in politics, and I think we’re only just grappling with the truth of that now.” Under Ailes’ direction, according to the series, Fox News gave its audience what it wanted, advancing conspiracy theories, phrasing accusations against political enemies as questions and even coordinating with the Bush White House to make its case for the Iraq War. It all made for big ratings but Ailes’ right wing fervor sometimes drew Murdoch’s ire when it clashed with his business pragmatism. Gabe Sherman, on whose book “The Loudest Voice in the Room” the series is based, describes the relationship between the two men as “complicated.” “(Murdoch) was trying to forge alliances with Democrats,” he explains, “because in 2008 when Barack Obama was elected, it really looked like the country was shifting and Murdoch wanted to be on the right side of that shift. And so him and Ailes got crossways over the election of Obama. “And so it’s a very competitive relationship also,” he continues. “Ailes really saw himself as the creator of Fox News and the visionary that gave life to the channel, and Murdoch, being the billionaire media mogul, also sees himself as the author of Fox News. So in many ways, these two larger-than-life figures were very competitive with each other even though they worked together. So it definitely is the stuff that makes for great television, to see these two characters kind of go at it.”

Whether or not you’re on vacation, when you’re at home, you can relax and let your mind wander. A good movie lets you escape from reality once in a while.

VIRGO

There won’t be a lack of conversation this week. However, you might find it difficult to control the topics, and you may find yourself sharing secrets you would have preferred to keep to yourself.

LIBRA

High quality renovation materials aren’t just a luxury; they’re also a long-term investment. Don’t be afraid to make your home look just the way you want it.

SCORPIO

While on vacation, at a conference or at the grocery store, you’ll meet somebody captivating. This person will introduce you to memorable experiences and allow you to release intense emotions.

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll need more than a simple “I love you” from your partner this week. Luckily, they have a romantic surprise in store for you.

CAPRICORN

Now that summer vacation has arrived, there’s nothing keeping you cooped up at home. Opt for a change of scenery with an exotic adventure or fun road trip with friends.

AQUARIUS

Housework and money are often a source of stress that add to the tension in your relationship. Renew harmony and calm your anxieties by finding new topics of conversation.

PISCES

Housework is a chore that you’ve been putting off and you may have to do it all at the last minute. At work, your genius ideas will be well received, as long as you know how to communicate them well.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

BY JAY BOBBIN

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Top 10 Movies ‘Rocketman’ recaps Elton John’s life BY JAY BOBBIN “Pete’s Dragon” (2016): As a helpful forest ranger, Howard introduces young Pete (Oakes Fegley) to – you guessed it! – a dragon in this Disney-studio revision of one of its own classics. “Jurassic World” (2015): Ron Howard’s daughter succeeded in bringing a brave new heroine to the franchise whose biggest stars, figuratively and literally, are cloned dinosaurs. “50/50” (2011): She ultimately may not be the most sympathetic figure in the film, but Howard does fine work as a cancer patient’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) girlfriend. “The Help” (2011): Again playing not the most likable figure in the piece, Howard does what’s needed as a Southern socialite who would prefer not to be swept up in social change. “Hereafter” (2010): Howard has affecting moments in director Clint Eastwood’s drama as a woman who learns a bit too much from a psychically gifted man (Matt Damon). “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” (2010): Very physical work plays heavily into Howard’s portrayal of Victoria in this chapter of the wildly popular horror-drama franchise. “Terminator Salvation” (2009): Howard sees action as the wife of Resistance fighter John Connor (Christian Bale) in this spinoff of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie series. “Spider-Man 3” (2007): Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) gets competition for Peter Parker’s (Tobey Maguire) heart in Howard’s Gwen Stacy. “Lady in the Water” (2006): In writer-director M. Night Shyamalan’s ambitious fantasy, Howard is said “lady,” a threatened figure protected by a building superintendent (Paul Giamatti). “Manderlay” (2005): Howard made an early impact as a Southerner who engineers her own social experiment at a plantation in filmmaker Lars von Trier’s drama.

and career

It’s been a big time for music-star movie biographies lately, and that’s really thanks to one filmmaker. Dexter Fletcher was brought in to finish the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” after the original director was fired. He’s also the driving force behind “Rocketman,” the story of Elton John ... who has gone through many variations in his work, from being one of the flashiest stars to take the stage, to settling into an easy-listening mode that even saw – and heard – him furnish a Disneymovie staple (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King”). Fletcher demonstrates that he’s more than up to tackling such a job from the start, drawing an excellent performance from “Kingsman”-franchise star Taron Egerton as the singer-songwriter behind countless hits that have stretched from the 1970s forward.

Taron Egerton

Flashbacks triggered by a group-therapy session cover John’s early life, with Bryce Dallas Howard as his rather undemonstrative mother and Jamie Bell (whose “Billy Elliot” also was devised by this picture’s writer, Lee Hall) as his longtime creative partner Bernie Taupin. Stage and screen veteran Gemma Jones earns high marks as the grandmother whose devotion helped John through his younger years. Elton John himself is one of the executive producers here, so he had a direct say in what is or isn’t included. Given that, he deserves credit for allowing the amount and depth of personal information, with Richard Madden playing a manager who became a key figure in that. It’s quite possible that some of John’s fans don’t know his whole story, and while “Bohemian Rhapsody” received some criticism for stopping short of full details on Freddie Mercury’s background, that’s not likely to happen in this case. And then there are the performance sequences in “Rocketman,” expectedly energetic, and also quite impressive from the standpoint of Egerton himself doing the singing. That’s the thing about an acting job like this: It’s more than the acting since the performer in question also has to look and sound thoroughly convincing musically, and Egerton deserves the same sort of kudos that eventually led Rami Malek to his “Bohemian Rhapsody” Oscar. Logically, many of John’s music hits are included, from “Your Song” to “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” If there’s one area in which viewers might feel shortchanged, though, it’s in its omission of much focus on John’s current life as the husband of David Furnish and father of two children. That’s covered by the film only briefly, but overall, “Rocketman” does a fine job of showing how its subject is still standing.

“THE BEST OF ENEMIES” Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) and Oscar winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) make a strong acting match in debuting director and screenwriter Robin Bissell’s fact-inspired drama that lives up to its title, taken from the Osha Gray Davidson book the film is based on. The stars play civilrights activist Ann Atwater and Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis, who opposed each other for a decade before becoming tenuous partners presiding over a meeting on school desegregation in North Carolina. The two-week session ultimately had a profound effect on both of them and the views they long had held. The excellent cast also includes Wes Bentley, Anne Heche, Babou Cessay, Bruce McGill, John Gallagher Jr. (“The Newsroom”) and Nick Searcy. Tobey Maguire was among the movie’s producers. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)

Following “Rocky,” “Rambo” and “The Expendables,” Sylvester Stallone has managed to build another franchise out of his adventures about an expert in breaking in and out of prisons. Here, his character Ray Breslin has a personal investment in the mission, since his girlfriend (Jaime King) is being detained in a veritable fortress in Latvia ... and take a wild guess at who the only person who can extract her is. The daughter of a tech-world kingpin also is being held; Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson play Breslin’s cohorts in trying to extract them. Devon Sawa (“Final Destination”) also is in director and co-writer John Herzfeld’s (“Reach Me”) cast. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by Stallone, Sawa, Herzfeld and co-star Daniel Bernhardt. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE PUBLIC” Emilio Estevez handles many of the major jobs on this intense drama, serving as writer and director as well as a producer and star of this tale of a crisis that evolves into a bigger one when a group of homeless people refuses to leave the Cincinnati Public Library during a severe cold snap. The presence of riot police – with Alec Baldwin playing a negotiator – prompts the escalation of the situation from a nonviolent matter to something potentially more tragic, something that two librarians caught in the middle (Estevez, Jena Malone) hope to avoid. Christian Slater, Taylor Schilling (“Orange Is the New Black”), Gabrielle Union, Richard T. Jones and “Boardwalk Empire” alums Jeffrey Wright and Michael Kenneth Williams also star. ››› (PG-13: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS” A veteran of American politics, played by Tika Sumpter (“Ride Along”), finds herself with multiple concerns in writer-director Joe Chappelle’s (“The Wire”) well-acted drama. Though the lead character isn’t specifically meant to be Condoleezza Rice, it wouldn’t be too hard to make the leap that she was an inspiration here, since the woman in the tale is a college professor and former national security adviser. Figures from her past – especially the current U.S. president, played by an excellent Jamie Lee Curtis – give her present-day worries, as does a particularly curious graduate student (Ben Tavassoli). Jeff Hephner, Clarke Peters, Rex Linn (“CSI: Miami”) and David Eigenberg (of “Chicago Fire,” which Chappelle often directs) also appear. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE” Based on a novel by Shirley Jackson, whose “The Haunting of Hill House:” has yielded multiple screen versions, this moody thriller casts Taissa Farmiga (“American Horror Story”) as a young woman whose fear of others in her village – who are wary of her troubled family history – has led her to place allegedly magical objects around her home to ward off evil. A cousin’s (Sebastian Stan) visit coincides with the disappearance of those items, also impacting the teenage girl’s sister (Alexandra Daddario), who has been a virtual recluse since being acquitted of their parents’ deaths. Expectedly, things only get more dangerous from that point. Filmed in Ireland, the melodrama also features Crispin Glover and Paula Malcomson (“Deadwood,” “Ray Donovan”). ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “A SUMMER TO REMEMBER” Seen recently in a reprise of her “JAG” role as “Mac” MacKenzie on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” Catherine Bell has been spending a lot of time on Hallmark Channel lately ... in her “Good Witch” series, and also in movies such as this one. Here, she plays a widowed doctor who takes a professional break by visiting Fiji with her daughter (Samantha MacGillivray). The owner of the resort where they stay happens to be an appealing hunk – gee, what are the odds? – played by Cameron Mathison, also a Hallmark fixture through moves and his co-hosting of the weekday show “Home & Family.” Their blossoming relationship make the medic have doubts about the major hospital promotion she’s up for back home. ››› (Not rated: AS)
