Tony winner Betty Buckley joins the cast as Jesse’s cold-blooded, wheelchair-bound grandmother.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” (June 5) Reunions, betrayals and a journey to the terrifying heart of the dystopic state of Gilead force all characters to take a stand in Season 3 of this popular drama series. Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski and Alexis Bledel are among cast returnees. (ORIGINAL)
“Movie: Bernie the Dolphin” Florida siblings come to the aid of a badly sunburned dolphin separated from his family and uncover a secret plan that could destroy their beach and their new friend’s home in this 2018 action comedy from director Kirk Harris (“Loser”). Kevin Sorbo, Patrick Muldoon, Lola Sultan and Logan Allen star.
“Harlots” (July 10) Margaret (Samantha Morton) is in chains, Lydia (Lesley Manville) is vanquished and the Wells girls appear on the verge of freeing themselves from their mother’s feud as this drama series about competing 18th century London brothels returns for a third season. (ORIGINAL)

What’s New NOW On May 19 “Movie: Dinosaur 13” Todd Douglas Miller (“Apollo 11”) directed this 2013 documentary about the discovery of the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found in the Badlands of South Dakota and the 10-year legal battle that followed involving the FBI, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the owner of the land on which the bones were found. “Movie: Shanghai” Just before U.S. entry into World War II, a Naval intelligence officer (John Cusack) returns to the titular Chinese city to investigate the murder of a friend in this 2010 political thriller from director Mikael Hafstrom (“1408”). Gong Li, Chow Yun-Fat, Franka Potente, David Morse and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are also in the solid cast. “Poldark” An upcoming election promises to bring significant change to Poldark’s (Aiden Turner) life in Season 4 of this British period drama, which also finds he and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) trying to rebuild their marriage and Caroline and Dwight (Gabriella Wilde, Luke Norris) coping with a family tragedy that prompts her to make a surprising decision. May 25 “Movie: Morning Glory” It’s nowhere near as expository about the television business as “Network” or “Broadcast News,” but this comedy about a failing morning show and the optimistic producer (Rachel McAdams) brought on board to energize it does have its pleasures. The main ones are a charming McAdams and a very amusing Harrison Ford, who plays a veteran newsman reluctant to do on-air “happy talk” with the show’s female co-host (Diane Keaton).
Building Wealth for Over a Century
“The Big Wedding” (May 31) A divorced couple (Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton) fake being married when their daughter weds the son of a devoutly religious woman in this 2013 comedy movie from writer/director Justin Zackham (“Going Greek”). Tommy Lee Jones, Eriko Hatsune and Toshiyuki Nishida also star. “Fun Size” (May 31) A teen (Victoria Justice, “Victorius”) goes in search of the younger brother she was babysitting after he disappears into a sea of trick-or-treaters on Halloween in this 2012 comedy from first-time feature filmmaker Josh Schwartz. “Underground Railroad” (date TBA) Thuso Mbedu (“Liberty”) stars as a slave who makes a bid for freedom when she escapes from her Georgia plantation for the Underground Railroad in this historical drama from Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”). WEEK OF MAY 19 TO 25, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: ARIES, TAURUS AND PISCES
ARIES Your enterprising nature will benefit you. Your effective handling of new challenges will demonstrate your abilities to others and put you in a good position to get a promotion.
TAURUS You’ll be overcome by the sudden desire to go on a trip. You’ll waste no time making travel plans and consequently have an unforgettable summer holiday. Also, you’ll feel unusually curious.
GEMINI Your emotions will come powerfully to the fore for one reason or another. You’ll also be overcome with an urgent need for change. Some new clothes or a new haircut could do the job.
CANCER Your morale might not be particularly high throughout the week. To turn things around, simply bring the people you love together and take part in stimulating activities.
LEO When you arrive at your desk on Monday, you’ll find enough work to keep you busy for two weeks. By being organized and methodical, you’ll manage to get everything done by Friday.
‘Blood & Treasure’ brings new summer adventure to CBS With the title “Blood & Treasure,” it’s a good bet that a new series didn’t make things easy for its stars. Luckily, both came to it with military training, literally: Matt Barr previously appeared in “Valor” while Sofia Pernas was in “The Brave,” and they’re now teamed in a CBS drama premiering Tuesday, May 21. Barr plays Danny, an FBI-alum antiquities expert who partners with ex-flame and art thief Lexi (Pernas) to chase a terrorist with designs on stolen valuables. The pursuit takes them around the world and, ultimately, to the heart of ancient history. Though some of CBS’ recent summer shows have had sci-fi overtones (“Salvation,” “Under the
Dome”), “Blood & Treasure” – whose executive producers include filmmaker Marc Webb, of “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “(500) Days of Summer” fame – observes an adventure tradition more on the order of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Barr confirms the series has “a lot of that DNA. It’s sort of a modern version of ‘Raiders,’ set in the modern world with modern themes, and revolving around what’s happening in 2019.” Much of “Blood & Treasure” entails physical action in such locations as Morocco and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, but the easygoing Barr allows that “what I had to work on the hardest” was relaying facts about artifacts from long ago.
“The adventure and the comedy and the chemistry with Sofia, I felt like I had a good grasp of that, but you can’t really BS your way out of art history and hundreds of years of information. I wanted to be able to sound like I knew what I was talking about, so I started doing research the second I got the job.” The phrase “female art thief” might generate thoughts of Catherine Zeta-Jones slinking under laser beams in the movie “Entrapment,” but fellow star Pernas concedes she doesn’t have such moments in “Blood & Treasure” ... not yet, anyway. “That was the first thing that came to my mind as well,” the friendly actress says. “The
series’ creators took a poll of all of us and said, ‘What do you want or need to see in Season 2 (provided that is ordered)?’ And I said, ‘Lasers! Hello!’ ” Pernas has been seen on other series including “NCIS” and “Jane the Virgin,” but “Blood & Treasure” marks her first lead role. “You know that you’re ready,” she reflects, “and that this is what you’ve been studying and training for the whole time, but when you get there, it is insane. The hours you keep, the work ethic, the focus – it’s constant. It doesn’t let up, so nothing really prepares you for that. This was taxing, but in the best of ways.”
VIRGO While participating in an event, you’ll perform a feat that takes you out of your comfort zone and pushes you beyond your limits.
LIBRA You don’t need to look far to achieve happiness. In your home and among your family is where you belong. Don’t hesitate to bring your loved ones together, no matter how modest the set-up.
SCORPIO Once you can no longer tolerate the situation you’re in, you’ll make the necessary changes. You’ll secure the financial means for a new start.
SAGITTARIUS Some physical exercise will dispel your worries. You need to attach yourself to someone new. Or, if you just started a new relationship, you’ll benefit from defining it more clearly. In a different area of your life, you’ll discover your freedom.
CAPRICORN You distinguish yourself with your accomplishments and no one can accuse you of being all talk. If you have a move coming up, you’ll start packing ahead of time — the sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll be done.
AQUARIUS Your exhaustion is growing and your health is becoming more delicate. Not one to give in easily, you’ll take steps to recover your vitality. Determination and organization are your watchwords.
PISCES You may lose trust in a friend. This experience will teach you to better detect freeloaders and you’ll derive more joy from your true friends.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Topher Grace’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “BlacKkKlansman” (2018): Grace does very credible work as then-Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke in director and co-writer Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning, fact-inspired drama. “Truth” (2015): Holding his own in an impressive cast led by Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett, Grace plays a member of the crew involved in an ultimately controversial “60 Minutes” report. “Interstellar” (2014): Grace belongs to another highly noteworthy cast in director and cowriter Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi drama that takes space explorers through a wormhole. “Predators” (2010): In an atypical role, Grace plays a doctor who finds himself among those fighting for survival against aliens in a jungle in this “threequel” to “Predator.” “Valentine’s Day” (2010): An appealing Grace is part of an all-star cast as a newly jilted florist who tries to keep a schoolteacher friend (Jennifer Garner) from making a mistake in romance. “Spider-Man 3” (2007): The Marvel character Venom would get his own movie (with another actor) roughly a decade later, but Grace had the role first opposite Tobey Maguire in the latter’s third and final turn as the title hero. “In Good Company” (2004): Grace is excellent as the new, young boss at a magazine where a veteran advertising man (Dennis Quaid) – whose daughter (Scarlett Johansson) is secretly being romanced by the newcomer – chafes under his leadership.

Chrissy Metz has a big-screen ‘Breakthrough’ Movies that are steeped in faith have done quite well at the box office in recent years, and the latest of them – the true story “Breakthrough” – has elements that suggest the makers of such films want to reach out to the widest audience possible. One such aspect that’s quite clear is the casting of Chrissy Metz, a star of one of television’s most popular shows these days, “This Is Us.” She plays a woman whose adopted son falls through the ice on a lake and, after an extended time submerged, may not survive. However, when his mother arrives at the Marcel Ruiz and Chrissy Metz
“Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!” (2004): An engaging Grace plays a smitten co-worker of a young small-town woman (Kate Bosworth) who does indeed win a date with worldly movie star Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001): In an unbilled cameo, Grace is hilarious as a version of himself, one of several television stars trying to learn the ropes of gambling from the veteran con man played by Brad Pitt. “Traffic” (2000): In the first movie into which he parlayed his fame from TV’s “That ‘70s Show,” Grace gets his big-screen career off to a solid start as the addiction-inspiring boyfriend of the daughter (Erika Christensen) of America’s new top cop against drugs (Michael Douglas).
hospital and offers prayers over him, he revives and then recovers with the help of an ace medical team. The question of religion vs. science then arises, and “Breakthrough” handles it admirably, making sufficient points for both sides. Survivor’s guilt is another theme that’s touched upon. Roxann Dawson, an actress who‘s done lots of TV directing but has her own breakthrough into moviemaking here, takes a level-headed approach that services the story and the actors well. Josh Lucas (as Metz’s husband), Topher Grace (as a rather unconventional clergyman), Mike Colter (as a first responder) and Dennis Haysbert (as the chief medic treating the teen) also give the picture plenty of cred in the performing arena, and Marcel Ruiz is quite good as the young survivor who turns out to be a walking miracle. The marketing of previous pictures in this genre largely has been directed toward church groups, and understandably so. The results have been potent, with the films typically scoring solid results financially, especially in the early weeks of their runs. With “Breakthrough,” 20th Century Fox very visibly has expanded the approach. That also is understandable, what with having a very marketable star in Metz ... something that had to have been planned from the start, though that calculation takes nothing away from the credit the actress deserves for her work here. The fact that she is so universally accessible a performer gives “Breakthrough” much of the relatability it can use as it tackles some major issues as relevant to those who aren’t religious as to those who are. “Breakthrough” is admittedly front-loaded with emotion, but the movie is done so well, it ultimately earns all the feels it inspires. (A Hollywood history note: How much Fox delves into such territory in the future is a question mark, since its Fox 2000 production unit – which made “Breakthrough” – is destined to be closed in the wake of the parent company’s recent purchase by Disney.)

“HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD” What was planned as the final chapter of the animated trilogy hits a number of emotional high points and sends out the franchise in a satisfying way. Jay Baruchel is back as the voice of the Viking named Hiccup, whose friendship with the dragon Toothless remains strong. Though Toothless is thought to be the last of his kind, a female dragon proves that wrong – and both eventually are imperiled by a villain voiced by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill and Craig Ferguson are among other returnees to the voice cast, with the overall result again enhanced by characters and an animation style that are easy to embrace. DVD extras: 12 “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by director and co-writer Dean DeBlois, producer Bradford Lewis and head of character animation Simon Otto; alternate opening; deleted scenes; two short subjects. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Bryan Cranston demonstrates again what a chameleon he is as an actor in director Neil Burger’s (“Limitless”) involving Americanization of the much-lauded French film “Les Intouchables.” The “Breaking Bad” alum and comedian Kevin Hart make an unlikely acting team, but their differences are precisely the reasons the movie works. Cranston plays a rich businessman left quadriplegic by a hanggliding accident, while Hart plays a parolee who needs gainful employment ... bringing him to the home of the Cranston character, where the chip on Hart’s shoulder almost prevents him from taking a job that will turn out to be life-changing for both men. While the emphasis is on those actors, Nicole Kidman also stars as Cranston’s assistant. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; theatrical trailer; deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MASTERPIECE: LES MISERABLES” A much-filmed tale gets an expansive and compelling retelling in this PBS/BBC co-production of the Victor Hugo classic, tracing the long-ranging animosity between desperate thief Jean Valjean and his dogged pursuer Inspector Javert – played here respectively by Dominic West (“The Affair”) and David Oyelowo (“Selma”), both producers of the project as well. Among other notable cast members are Lily Collins as Fantine and Olivia Colman (who would win an Oscar for “The Favourite” after she filmed this) as Madame Thenardier. The Hugo work was adapted for this version by two-time Emmy winner Andrew Davies, co-writer of the original British version of “House of Cards” ... who said that he never read the novel before getting this assignment. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “ISN’T IT ROMANTIC” “Pitch Perfect” staple Rebel Wilson gets a showcase for herself in this romantic comedy about ... a romantic comedy, which she lives in her mind after her New York architect character has an encounter with a mugger. When she revives, her world is a heightened reality in which everything and everyone appears to be much more than they were before, even in the love department, prompting her to want her real life back. The story’s alternate-world conceit doesn’t hold up all the way, but Wilson is quite game, fun and watchable throughout; her co-stars include fellow “Pitch Perfect” alum Adam DeVine, Liam Hemsworth, Priyanka Chopra (“Quantico”) and Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”). DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “EARTHQUAKE” One of the biggest hits of the 1970s disaster-movie wave gets a Blu-ray “Collector’s Edition” relaunch that contains two versions of the film – the original theatrical cut, plus an variation prepared for broadcast television that offers an additional 20 minutes-plus. The next-to-last picture made by veteran director Mark Robson, the epic doesn’t skimp on special effects (Oscar-winning ones, at that) as “the big one” hits Los Angeles. Among those caught in the resulting mayhem: an architect (Charlton Heston) torn between his drama-prone wife (Ava Gardner) and a late friend’s widow (Genevieve Bujold); a hottempered cop (George Kennedy); and a motorcycle stunt-show daredevil (Richard Roundtree). A fun fact is that the quake footage contained here was used over and over in various television shows also made by Universal Studios. Lorne Greene, Victoria Principal, Marjoe Gortner and Lloyd Nolan also star. Several new documentaries about the making of the film are included. ››› (PG: AS, P, V) “ROBBERY”
LITTLE (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 49 min Comedy
A DOG’S JOURNEY PG, 1 hr 48 min Family
Making its home-video debut in the U.S., this British crime drama is notable in its own right and also for what else it yielded, since its style made Steve McQueen determined to land (which he did) director and co-writer Peter Yates for his classic movie “Bullitt.” The subject is the so-called Great Train Robbery of 1963, in which a gang leader (played here by Stanley Baker, also a producer of the film) faced a number of obstacles – including a suspicious police inspector (James Booth) – in trying to pull off a heist aboard a Royal Mail locomotive. Joanna Pettet (a London native, though she did a lot of American work before she retired) and veteran English actors Frank Finlay and Barry Foster also star. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
