LEO
You’ll find yourself carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. At home, trust the other members of your family to help with the housework. You’ll be the force that brings people together and your smile will be enough to lighten the atmosphere.
Amazon anthology series explores ‘Modern Love’ – whatever that may mean Love, it is said, can come in many forms. There is romantic love, love between a parent and child and between best friends. And then there are a good many that are harder to define. And a few are explored to entertaining effect in a smart new comedy anthology series dropping this week on Amazon. “Modern Love,” inspired by the popular New York Times column of the same name and premiering Friday, Oct. 18, looks at love in all of its complicated forms, with each episode brought to life by an impressive cast including Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables”), Cristin Milioti (“How I Met Your Mother”) Gary Carr (“The Deuce”), Catherine Keener (“Capote”), Andy Garcia (“The Godfather Part III”), Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), John Slattery (“Mad Men”) and Sofia Boutella (“Hotel Artemis”). The opening episode, titled “When the Doorman Is Your Main Man,” introduces us to young New York singleton Maggie (Milioti), whose everyday comings and goings are observed by her apartment building’s doorman, Guzmin (Laurentiu Possa, “The Bourne Ultimatum”). He’s a former Albanian sniper with a protective streak and an eye for character, and what he sees in some of Maggie’s dates, he doesn’t like. And he tells her so. “I was really touched by the nuance of it,” Milioti, seated in a quiet corner of a Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel, says of the storyline. “And it wasn’t romantic love. It was a love you couldn’t put your finger on. And I was really touched by her,
too, because I feel like there’s multiple love stories that go on within it. It’s her and the love with the doorman, platonic but also father/daughter, also something you can’t quite put your finger on. ... “And then I think ... it’s a love story between her and herself,” she continues, “that she tried to conform to be what other people wanted her to be, like on all those failed dates, dumbing herself down and going out with guys who weren’t even listening to her. And she makes this really brave decision and she sees it through and she comes into her own.” A subsequent episode, titled “Take Me as I Am, Whoever I Am,” deals with mental illness as told through the story of Lexi (Hathaway), a bipolar woman we meet as she’s going food shopping at 7 a.m., dressed to the nines and feeling so good about herself there is a production number complete with leaping dancers going on behind her. “It’s this huge block in Lexi’s life,” Hathaway says, “and she talks about that. She talks about just needing one person, just one person to accept all of her. And that’s really what we all, I think, want. And she gets it. She doesn’t get it from the person that, I think, any of us expect her to get it from in the beginning of the episode. But that one person giving her the space, being patient, being compassionate, and being a true loving person in her life changes everything for her. It gives her hope and gives her a future.”
VIRGO
Before launching yourself into a new project, it’s important to gather all the pertinent information. Even if a trip isn’t in your budget, it’ll be hard to resist an invitation from a loved one.
LIBRA
Certain changes are necessary if you want to grow in your career. To that end, you may need to forge your own path or take some classes to land a more interesting job. Change is good.
SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

PISCES
You’ll succeed in finding pleasurable moments in otherwise long days. You’ll burn off extra energy by making impassioned speeches to your loved ones. You’ll have no shortage of brilliant ideas this week.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jennifer Lopez’s Top 10 Movies
BY JAY BOBBIN
“Second Act” (2018): Lopez returns to the rom-com genre that has served her well as a woman whose professional upward mobility is based on a resume that she fabricated ... a lie that she’s destined to get caught in. “The Back-up Plan” (2010): It’s not the easiest thing to pull off being charming in a comedy about artificial insemination, but Lopez manages. “Monster-in-Law” (2005): Lopez and Jane Fonda are a fun match as the fiancee and the mom struggling over the same man (Michael Vartan). “Shall We Dance?” (2004): This respectable remake of the Japanese drama uses Lopez nicely as the dance instructor who inspires a married attorney (Richard Gere) in several ways. “Maid in Manhattan” (2002): Lopez plays a contemporary Cinderella in this romantic comedy about a hotel maid’s case of mistaken identity. “Enough” (2002): A cable mainstay, this drama gives Lopez a great chance to show her serious side as an abused wife and mother who finally decides to battle back. “The Wedding Planner” (2001): A charming Lopez fills the title occupation in this love story, with Matthew McConaughey as the would-be groom she falls for while planning his nuptials. “Out of Sight” (1998): Lopez’s teamwork with George Clooney on this adaptation of an Elmore Leonard crime novel often is cited as evidence of how combustibly good a pairing of stars can be. “Selena” (1997): Her top triumph as a solo star to date, this biography of the slain singer allows Lopez to shine both dramatically and musically. “Money Train” (1995): The emphasis is on Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as transit cops, but Lopez adds allure as another officer working with them.

Jennifer Lopez gives ‘Hustlers’ its real hustle “Hustlers” boasts an impressive female cast, but there’s little doubt who you’ll remember the most from it. Also a producer of the fact-based drama, Jennifer Lopez has given herself a terrific role as the ringleader of a group of strippers who come up with a scheme to profit quite beautifully from practicing their profession. It has to do with bilking the wealthy men they coerce, but there‘s a lot more to the tale than that. “Hustlers” also is a story of true sisterhood and of surviving tough financial times, especially when you’re a single parent who also has to fend for your child. Constance Wu plays a newcomer to the group, and you almost can understand why she was so upset about having to return to TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat” if it means having to turn down projects like this. The characters are welldefined and generally well-played, giving this a boost above a typical con-artist saga while also furnishing the means for good work by a number of actresses.
“Hustlers”
“STUBER” In these days of ride-sharing popularity, you just knew it had to happen ... a movie centered around an Uber trip. Marry that to an action-buddy premise and the result is this, what happens when a mild-mannered driver gets drawn into a tough cop’s pursuit of a killer. Dave Bautista is the police detective in this case, and since he’s just had eye surgery, he can’t get behind the wheel himself. He orders an Uber, and Kumail Nanjiani plays the chauffeur who draws the assignment – and does he ever get more than he bargained for, as the journey racks up bullets along with miles. This is right out of the “Lethal Weapon” or “Ride Along” playbook, and the blueprint is so standard, it really falls to the actors involved to make the result successful. Fortunately, Nanjiani and Bautista have an offbeat rapport that keeps their shared antics watchable; they get solid support from such co-stars as Mira Sorvino, Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”) and Natalie Morales (“Abby’s”). DVD extras: theatrical trailer; audio commentary by Nanjiani and director Michael Dowse; deleted scenes; outtakes; photo gallery; “Joke-O-Rama.” ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Lili Reinhart of “Riverdale” also is on board, as is Keke Palmer, who recently became a daytime talk-show co-host on the retitled “GMA3: Strahan & Sara & Keke” (on which she recently tried to teach the other hosts to pole-dance, a la “Hustlers”). Julia Stiles appears as the reporter who wrote the actual story that inspired the movie, which was written and directed by actress turned filmmaker Lorene Scafaria (“The Meddler,” “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”). However, it’s Lopez who really sells “Hustlers.” Her acting career generally has coasted since her early high marks in “Selena” and “Out of Sight,” with rom-coms on the order of “The Wedding Planner” and “Second Act” becoming her norm. While those have shown off her appeal, they haven’t been particularly demanding in acting terms ... but here, Lopez displays a wise and natural expertise that really is a thrill to watch. It’s a matter of seeing a star also being a skilled performer in the truest sense, and it’s not surprising to see her being discussed for a possible Oscar nomination. Her work stands out that much. “Hustlers” might be compelling enough without her, but it’s a real bonus for the movie – and for viewers – that J. Lo takes it higher.

“THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE”
R, 2 hr 29 min Drama
The Shirley Jackson novel has serviced several screen adaptations, and Netflix scored a major hit last year with this widely praised 10-episode series version, offered here with added content not seen previously. The melodrama revolves around several siblings who, following their youngest sister’s suicide, return to the allegedly haunted house where they grew up to seek answers to the ongoing mysteries of their lives. Stars include Michel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser, Mckenna Grace, Annabeth Gish and James Lafferty (”One Tree Hill“). Several of the chapters are presented in ”Extended Director’s Cuts“ with optional commentary by said director, Mike Flanagan. The Netflix franchise is slated to yield ”The Haunting of Bly Manor“ next year, with some of the same actors set to return in different roles. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Though the original David Lynch show has been available on home video previously, this new iteration also incorporates the Showtime limited-event series done many years later – but has become known as the highly offbeat drama’s third season. Kyle MacLachlan stars as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, who travels to the title Pacific Northwest town to investigate the murder of popular resident Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). This release is a prelude to December’s “Twin Peaks: From Z to A” collection, which also will include the “Fire Walk With Me” feature film, a bounty of behind-the-scenes footage and a diorama of the show’s iconic Red Room. Among the many other stars are Michael Ontkean (though he didn’t return for the revival), Madchen Amick, Richard Beymer, Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn, Peggy Lipton, Ray Wise, Piper Laurie, Kimmy Robertson, Russ Tamblyn and (as the “Log Lady”) Catherine E. Coulson. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “NIGHT HUNTER” A strong cast is featured in this melodrama that covers many of the tropes of the policethriller genre. Henry Cavill plays a police lieutenant struggling to work through personal problems while investigating a murder ... a case that becomes something much bigger when it leads him, along with a vigilantism-minded former judge (Ben Kingsley) and a profiler (Alexandra Daddario), to many women who are being held captive. Though the perpetrator supposedly is taken into custody, someone else connected to the situation evidently remains at large, with the policeman and his colleagues as targets. Stanley Tucci, Minka Kelly, Nathan Fillion (“The Rookie”) and Brendan Fletcher also star. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MICHAEL JACKSON: THE TELEVISION BROADCASTS” As much of an enigma as he may have been in the later years of his life, one of popular music’s ultimate icons was fairly accessible in TV terms through much of his career, often appearing on variety shows that were taped or televised live before music videos became the “King of Pop’s” frequent avenue to reach audiences. This release compiles many of those performances, and not only from his years as a solo artist, but also the earlier phase that saw him teamed with his brothers as The Jackson 5. Of course, the related music heard is a virtual catalog of chart hits from the latter half of the 20th century, much of it stemming from Jackson’s years on the Motown label. Archival interview segments also are included. ››› (Not rated)
