Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell star in “The Morning Show,” one of the first new series to stream on Apple TV+ when the service launches Friday.

‘The Morning Show’

is among opening offerings of Apple TV+ BY JAY BOBBIN Having a tough time deciding which streaming service(s) to subscribe to? It’s not about to get any easier. Several newcomers are on the way, including Disney+ (very soon, in fact), HBO Max and NBC Universal’s Peacock. First up, though, is Apple TV+ – which makes its debut Friday, Nov. 1, with an ambitious slate of original programming that features some very familiar faces in certain cases. Beyond the series available for starters, the plan is to add more shows each month (coming Nov. 28: M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Servant”). Arguably the most launch attention is trained on “The Morning Show,” if only for its stars ... Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who previously played sisters on “Friends” (and also are executive producers of the new drama). Aniston portrays a morning-TV veteran who loses her co-host (Steve Carell) over accusations of inappropriate behavior, with Witherspoon as an ambitious reporter whose forceful coverage of one story boosts her profile. Billy Crudup also appears as a network executive with much to say about what happens on “The Morning Show” (also the name of the show within the show). The other series making their debuts as Apple TV+ itself premieres are the following: The seriocomic “Dickinson” casts Hailee Steinfeld (“Bumblebee,” “True Grit”) as the legendary poet Emily Dickinson, whose rebellion

Get the

against the constraints of 1800s society may have limited her in her own time, but made and kept her famous long afterward. “See” is the ironic title of a futuristic drama in which the survivors of a virus have been rendered blind and have to learn to cope without sight. Recent movie “Aquaman” Jason Momoa and multiple Emmy winner Alfre Woodard are among the stars. “For All Mankind” projects what might have happened if the space race had continued. Ronald D. Moore (“Outlander”) is among the executive producers of the drama, which features Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) and Shantel VanSanten (“Shooter”). Oprah Winfrey is slated to take her Book Club concept into its next iteration as she interviews authors, attempting to generate a base of positivity that also will involve other projects being carried out around the world. “The Elephant Queen” is a documentary following a pachyderm’s struggle against extinction as she tries to protect and inspire her herd. Several children’s shows also will be on the Apple TV+ menu from the outset: “Snoopy in Space,” which is exactly what it suggests about the animated “Peanuts” gang; a reboot of “Ghostwriter”; and “Helpsters,” from the team behind “Sesame Street.” Apple TV+ is poised to take a bite out of the streaming pie, then. As with all other comers in that market, whether consumers take their own bites of it remains to be seen.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 27 TO NOVEMBER 2, 2019

Renee Zellweger’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: AQUARIUS, PISCES AND ARIES

ARIES

Emotions will run high this week, lending you a burst of creative inspiration. You’ll develop a closer bond with someone after taking care of them. They’ll be happy to do the same for you eventually.

TAURUS

It’s easier to get along with people you’re not emotionally attached to. One of your children knows just how to play with your emotions to get what they want.

GEMINI

A slight ailment will get a bit worse this week. Luckily, this leads you to consult a specialist who will help you find the right treatment.

“Bee Movie” (2007): In voice only, Zellweger is an essential element of the animated comedy about a bee who ventures outside his hive. “Miss Potter” (2006): Zellweger lends innate sweetness to the saga of “Peter Rabbit” author Beatrix Potter.

“Cinderella Man” (2005): Lending fine support to Russell Crowe, Zellweger is solid as the wife of Depression-era boxer James J. Braddock.

LEO

“Cold Mountain” (2003): The role that earned Zellweger an Oscar lets her play “character actress” as confidante to a Civil War soldier’s love.

VIRGO

“Chicago” (2002): As Roxie Hart, one of two murderesses needing a good lawyer, Zellweger proved she could sing and dance as well as act.

CANCER

You’ll accomplish something you’ll be especially proud of. This will boost your self-esteem. You may be able to save someone from an unfortunate situation. You’ll reach your health goals more quickly by simply changing the way you eat. Also, you’ll be inspired to start a small business from your home that could turn into something big. You won’t mince your words this week. Your phone will be ringing off the hook with invitations from your friends to join them for all sorts of fun.

LIBRA

Don’t be surprised if you get a promotion that comes with a generous salary increase. Discretion is necessary because there are jealous people around.

SCORPIO

There will be tons going on this week, and you’ll spend quality time with the people you love. With a little organization, certain obligations will be lots of fun, even if they’re work-related.

SAGITTARIUS

“White Oleander” (2002): Zellweger displays great compassion as one of the foster parents of a convict’s daughter.

“Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001): British critics carped early about very American Zellweger tackling the role of an Englishwoman, but her portrayal of the lovably klutzy Bridget ultimately earned her great praise.

“One True Thing” (1998):

You’ll find it necessary to take more care and consideration than usual this week. Also, you’ll gain insight from a flash of creativity and immediately start working on a masterpiece. Get out of the house for a bit, you could use some fresh air.

Zellweger held her own against Meryl Streep – one of the top challenges for any performer – as the resentful daughter of a cancer patient.

CAPRICORN

“A Price Above Rubies” (1998): If she can play British, she

If you’re single, you’ll receive several invitations this week. Make your social life a priority and people will want to spend time with you. Your clientele will also grow.

AQUARIUS

There are a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders right now. Luckily, you’re incredibly organized. There won’t seem to be enough time to get everything done but tight scheduling will make it possible.

PISCES

A vacation may be on the horizon. To make it happen, all you need to do is dream about it or apply the law of attraction. Professionally, opportunities for extra training should be undertaken as they’ll prove profitable.

can play Jewish. Zellweger’s character here chafes under, and goes against, Hasidic rules.

“Jerry Maguire” (1996): She had made several other films, but Zellweger came into instant stardom – quite justifiably – as a co-worker who goes along with Tom Cruise’s title sports agent when he starts his own firm, then becomes much more than an employee to him.

THE SUMTER ITEM BY JAY BOBBIN

Renee Zellweger becomes ‘Judy’ Garland in biography If someone questions the wisdom of Renee Zellweger trying to approximate a legend on the order of Judy Garland, it’s understandable. On the surface, you’re talking about two very different personalities – one who has seemed to be relatively shy and directed inward, and the other bold and brassy, at least in terms of how she presented herself to the public. It is no small feat, then, that Zellweger shines in the biography “Judy,” in which she has to re-create a personally and financially troubled Garland near the end of her career. The picture is framed by the subject’s triumphant 1969 stage comeback in London, but it does delve back into the early years of the eventual icon who was born Frances Gumm and found a girlhood home by making movies at MGM. Those scenes are part and parcel of a well-rounded biography, with British talent Darci Shaw as the younger Garland, but it’s when Zellweger occupies the role that the movie really pops. That’s especially true in the scenes that show the older Garland in performance, with such song standards as “Over the Rainbow” and “Get Happy” getting surprisingly affecting workouts. It frankly helps that Zellweger hasn’t done that much screen work lately; some always will remember her in “Jerry Maguire” or “Chicago,” but her recent absence affords her the chance to come back to audiences fresh, and vice versa.

Her acting chops are quite important in this case, since entertainment history has documented the tragic troubles Garland had later in life. Zellweger’s task in “Judy” largely is to enact the effects of those personal trials on Garland’s public persona. By the time of the events in the film, the latter woman’s movie career had evaporated and she had attempted a television variety series that was a relative disaster (despite yielding some memorable musical sequences). While Rufus Sewell (as Sid Luft, whose relationship with Garland also is the subject of a current Showtime documentary) and Finn Wittrock are fine as the principal men who were in Garland’s life during the period the movie covers, the picture rightfully keeps its focus on Garland herself, and it pretty much delivers. And that rests almost entirely on the person in the title part. Tackling the image of Judy Garland is a tall order, no matter what career stage the attempting performer is at. Renee Zellweger gives it her best shot in “Judy,” and the result is much more commendable than some may expect.

(UPCOMING RELEASES) “THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN” (Nov. 5) “FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW” (Nov. 5) “THE KITCHEN” (Nov. 5) “GOOD BOYS” (Nov. 12) “THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON” (Nov. 12) “CATCH-22” (Nov. 19)

Summerton, the small town southwest of Manning in Clarendon County, has capitalized on its proximity to the Lake Marion shoreline and rural South Carolina’s Santee Cooper Lake Country amenities. “We’ve claimed our own title of Duck Capital of South Carolina,” said Christina Darby, Duckfest co-chair, of Summerton’s signature event. It is now in its fourth year, and Mayor Mac Bagnal wanted to draw people – lifelong neighbors, Midlands residents and far-away tourists – to a festival celebrating the area’s vast outdoor appeal, from hunting to fishing to camping, hiking, biking, boating, golfing, you name it. Darby said people come from all over the country for Duckfest, highlighted by an official duck-calling competition that qualifies for the national level and a well-attended beauty pageant. About 6,000 came last year for the 60-sponsor, volunteer-run festival to the town of 1,000, according to Municipal Association of South Carolina population data. New this year is a show from the Ultimate Air Dogs, a firefighter training obstacle course challenge and expanded activities for kids. Attendees can come for a specific event, but Darby said she and festival organizers encourage people to stay all day. Picnic blankets, chairs, coolers and pets are all welcome. Between all the vendors selling outdoor-focused products, such as handmade duck calls, metal crafts and other local artists’ pieces, and all the mouth-watering food, the day could be a perfect one to relax with friends and family and soak in what has appealed about Summerton for generations.

umter native Richard Davis said he’s got a “really sweet gig. He gets to do full time what he loves. Not everybody can say that.” The 28-year-old started his business, Davis Marine Management, less than a year ago and feels he’s found his niche. He also works in the family business, Extreme Sports, run by his parents. While he was an avid motocross competitor from age 4 to 21, Davis also grew up around boats, often going out with his father, a boat enthusiast. Having grown up on the water, living at Lake Marion for a few years and being around boats for his entire life convinced him he didn’t want to do anything else. Over the years, he “learned a lot about boats.” So much, in fact, that he “… always had people calling me for advice.” He decided to turn his boat expertise and 10 years’ experience in the marine industry into a boat brokerage business, which he said is going very well. Davis Marine Management, he said, makes the process of buying and selling boats much easier for his clients. When he gets a call for a consultation, Davis said, “I will come SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2019 | LAKESIDE out and36get information, do market research to see what the boat is selling for, its value and just a lot about the boat.” Most of his sales are advertised and marketed on the internet, he said, “after we agree on a listing price and commission.” He cleans the boat, and his strong interest in photography allows him to take professional-grade photos. Davis stores the boat, shows it “anytime”

and will take it out for a sea trial or “test drive.” He consults the seller regarding any offers, and if one is accepted, Davis handles all the paperwork, which can be quite complicated. He also provides financing options. In addition, Davis also works with clients interested in buying a boat, again handling all the details and paperwork. “There is a great demand for people wanting me to sell their boats this year,” he said. “People don’t have time to meet with the buyer and haggle over the price, complete all the paperwork.” He specializes in center console boats and has sold bass boats, pontoons and other boats. In fact, Davis will sell almost any kind and size boat. He prefers saltwater boating and “gets down to the coast regularly for fishing.”by Sharon Haley | Photographs Story Davis thinks he is one of very few boat brokers west of the coast, which is a great advantage of living in Sumter. “My goal is to do this full time,” he said. “Being in the center of the state gives me a hub to work out of. I can show boats and meet with people from all over. There is nobody else around doing this. Also, the paperwork can all be done electronically – you don’t even have to see me. “I take the headache out of buying and selling boats.” Contact Richard Davis 24 hours a day, at (803) 968-7878. “MIKE WALLACE IS HERE” If you were a businessperson or public official involved in underhanded doings, the worst four words you could hear arguably were those that make up the title of this fine documentary about the veteran newsman and longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent. Shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the profile recalls how Wallace occupied other roles in the television business early years in his career, including actor, game-show host and commercial spokesman. Things started to change for him with the programs “Night Beat” and “The Mike Wallace Interview,” and his later habit of catching subjects off-guard – eventually including such figures as Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbra Streisand and Johnny Carson – cemented his place in journalistic history. Those seen in archival clips include such history-makers as President John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, as well as Wallace’s CBS News peers Dan Rather, Morley Safer and Edward R. Murrow. ››› DVD extras: deleted scenes. (PG13: AS, P)

“THE WIZARD OF OZ” In its 80th-anniversary year, this all-time screen classic has its unveiling in 4K Ultra HD as part of a package that also includes a Blu-ray of the film and numerous special features. Welcome to Earth if you need to be told that the L. Frank Baum story – directed by Victor Fleming, who had a really good year in 1939, also with “Gone With the Wind” – follows the adventures of Kansas farm girl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland, of course) and her dog Toto as a tornado lands them in the magical and immensely colorful land of Oz, where they make friends with a tin man (Jack Haley), a scarecrow (Ray Bolger) and a cowardly lion (Bert Lahr). Margaret Hamilton (who’s among those featured on an accompanying audio commentary) remains fearsome as the Wicked Witch of the West, while Billie Burke is charming as good witch Glinda and Frank Morgan is effective as ... well, if you don’t know already, you’ll see. “Over the Rainbow,” which Garland made a musical standard, won an Oscar. In case you wonder, the “PG” rating is for the picture’s scarier scenes (think “flying monkeys”). ›››› (PG: AS) “LUCE” The title character (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr) in this well-cast drama is a model student and athlete who opposes one of his teachers (Octavia Spencer), one of his biggest supporters though he objects to her making examples of his classmates. As the dissension between the two of them grows stronger and he learns more about her, his adoptive parents (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, reunited from the remake of “Funny Games”) become involved and start to worry about his actions ... past, present and potentially future. Rich in character development, sometimes to an uncomfortable degree, the film – which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and for which director and co-writer Julius Onah put the actors through considerable rehearsals before the cameras rolled – also features two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (“Fosse/Verdon”). ››› (R: AS, N, P)

“NIGHTMARE IN BADHAM COUNTY” At the time, this made-for-ABC movie was one of the most scandalous programs television had shown up to that point. Sort of a reversegender twist on the classic fugitives-on-the-run drama “The Defiant Ones,” the 1976 tale casts Deborah Raffin and Lynne Moody as travelers who encounter car trouble and end up sent to a brutal Southern prison farm on trumped-up charges. With the local sheriff (Chuck Connors) determined to see that they never leave, they decide escape is their only option for survival. Robert Reed (in a very non“Brady Bunch”-like role), Tina Louise, Lana Wood, Della Reese and Ralph Bellamy also star. The film has a place in entertainment history, since its popularity in China helped to facilitate business between that country and Hollywood –- thanks largely to Raffin, who became an accomplished businesswoman herself. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “RED HEAT” It may not have been a blockbuster on the order of “The Terminator” or “Total Recall,” but this police-action tale – making its debut in the 4K Ultra HD format – is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most entertaining movies. That has much to do with his agreeable teamwork with James Belushi, who plays a smart-aleck Chicago detective ordered to accompany a Russian officer (Schwarzenegger) who comes to America to bring an escaped but recaptured felon (Ed O’Ross) back home. Of course, the bad guy gets away again, and the Windy City becomes the canvas for a frantic and frequently violent pursuit. Peter Boyle, Gina Gershon and Laurence Fishburne (billed as “Larry” here) also star for director and co-writer Walter Hill (“48 HRS.”). ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
