What’s New NOW On October 6 “Movie: True Grit” More a reimagining of the Charles Portis novel than a remake of the Oscar-winning John Wayne movie, Joel and Ethan Coen’s take on the Western classic boasts fellow “Big Lebowski” alum Jeff Bridges’ effective performance as Rooster Cogburn, the grizzled lawman enlisted by a spunky youngster (impressive newcomer Hailee Steinfeld) to find her father’s killer. Matt Damon is solid as a Texas Ranger involved in the hunt; Josh Brolin also co-stars. “Movie: Set Up” There’s no honor among thieves ... at least the ones in this 2011 drama. Actor-rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson plays one of the conspirators in a robbery, but he’s left emptyhanded and mighty angry when a supposed partner takes off with the goods. His pursuit of his own brand of justice leads him into an uneasy alliance with an underworld kingpin. Bruce Willis, Ryan Phillippe and Jenna Dewan (“The Playboy Club”) also star. “Movie: Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel” Lisa Immordino Vreeland, Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt and Frédéric Tcheng helmed this enjoyable 2011 documentary that looks at the life and work of influential Harper’s Bazaar editor Diana Vreeland. Comments from fashion luminaries such as Richard Avedon, Manolo Blahnik and Oscar de la Renta as well as friends George Plimpton and Ali MacGraw help flesh out her story. “Movie: Project Nim” The story of a chimpanzee taken at birth from its mother and raised as a human child in an Upper West Side New York brownstone in the 1970s is told in this fascinating 2011 documentary from first-time filmmaker Elizabeth Hess.
Coming Soon “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” (Nov. 1) The second season of this action series finds the titular CIA officer played by John Krasinski in South America investigating a potentially suspicious shipment of illegal arms in the Venezuelan jungle, a probe that gets the attention of that nation’s president. (ORIGINAL) “Event Horizon” series (date TBA) Amazon and Paramount Television are developing a series adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi horror film “Event Horizon,” about a deep-space vehicle that went to an evil dimension and returned with mindwarping powers. Adam Wingard (“Blair Witch”) will serve as executive producer and director. (ORIGINAL) “Truth Seekers” (date TBA) Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are executive producers and stars of this horrorcomedy series about paranormal investigators who team up to uncover and film paranormal sightings across the U.K. (ORIGINAL)

Jesse Pinkman takes it on the run in Netflix’s ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ When last seen, mentally and emotionally broken meth cook/dealer Jesse Pinkman was laughing maniacally as he fled his neo-Nazi captors in his Chevy El Camino in the 2013 series finale of “Breaking Bad.” Now, fans of creator Vince Gilligan’s multiple Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning 2008-13 AMC drama series get to find out what became of the well-intentioned lad gone wrong – and likely a whole lot more – when three-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises the role in “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which begins streaming Friday, Oct. 11, on Netflix. As with any series rife with cliffhangers, details on “El Camino” were hard to come by, save for the one-line description on the Netflix press release that says, “In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.” The idea for the film came from something Gilligan had been kicking around as the 10th anniversary of the series approached in 2018, according to fellow executive producer Melissa Bernstein. “We were trying to think of ways to mark that anniversary in a fun way for fans and do something meaningful,” she explains. “And Vince at the time thought, ‘What if I did a little short about Jesse?’ And we were like, ‘Did I hear that right? Really? Do you really have the interest and draw to return to that story ...?’ And he was like, ‘I think I do.’ And he started just mulling it over. ... And I think the more he
thought about it, the more story he felt was there and I think that grew into something that maybe it’s not a short, maybe it’s an episode-long piece. And then from there, I think he felt like this could be its own story and its own film.” From there, Bernstein reports, getting Paul back on board was a shoo-in thanks to his relationship with Gilligan. “Most everyone involved ... I think would do anything for Vince,” she says. “You know, if Vince called them and said, ‘I have an idea. I just kind of want you to show up. What do you think?’ I think every one of them would show up. There’s just that much goodwill and trust built up between Vince and that cast and in particular between Vince and Aaron. “And Aaron, he’s game,” she continues, “and he’s just always been so committed to our ‘Breaking Bad’ family that it wasn’t in doubt for even a moment that he would participate.” As for cast beyond Paul, it is known that Matt Jones (aka Badger) and Charles Baker (Skinny Pete) are on board but no word at all on whether “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston is involved or whether chemistry teacher-turned-meth dealer Walter White is alive or dead – which was also left openended in the finale. “As much as the storyline,” Bernstein says, “the cast I think is what we feel provides the biggest surprises and fun – for who’s in it and who’s not in it. And I think that is something also that we hope the fans will get to discover on their own and not via the internet.”
Work or your health will take up a good portion of your time. In either case, you’ll succeed in arranging things to make your life better in the future. An honest conversation will put things into perspective.
LIBRA
You’ll pay some much-needed attention to your well-being this week. Also, you’ll be congratulated for one reason or another and put on a pedestal. In your love life, it’s time to swap moments of passion for a lifetime of devotion.
SCORPIO
Happiness is inside you. Once you’ve found it, it’ll shine on your family, your friends and on everyone you love. Your joy is contagious. It’s important to be happy in your daily life.
SAGITTARIUS
You’ll be on the move a lot, both at work and in your social life. You’ll organize an event on a strict budget that will bring people together. In your love life, you’ll hear words that reflect your emotions.
CAPRICORN
You’ll work twice as hard at the office, which will bring in some extra income. When they observe your work ethic, your bosses will have no choice but to offer you a promotion. Be generous in your love life: you’ll get back as much as you put in.
AQUARIUS
There’s lots going on this week. Not only do you have a ton of work, but a number of activities will be spontaneously thrown together. You’ll find the perfect balance between having fun and working hard.
PISCES
You’re entering a rather ambiguous period. You could try to swim against the current, but it would be better to let the elements guide you to your destination. Stress will oblige you to listen to the messages your body is sending you.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jessica Chastain’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Molly’s Game” (2017): The fact-inspired role of Molly Bloom, an ex-athlete who became the operator of a very exclusive and quite illegal poker game, yields a great part for – and terrific work by – Chastain in this Aaron Sorkin project. “Miss Sloane” (2016): Chastain exudes total confidence as a Washington, D.C., lobbyist who runs into a particularly challenging situation. “A Most Violent Year” (2014): A powerful Chastain plays the wife and mother in a family that has vicious competition in their heating-oil business. “Interstellar” (2014): In director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi drama, Chastain is quite fine as the daughter of an astronaut (Matthew McConaughey) who has to decide whether to follow through on a mission to return to her on Earth. “Miss Julie” (2014): Renowned actress Liv Ullmann directed and adapted this version of the August Strindberg play about a young aristocrat’s designs on a servant (Colin Farrell). “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” (2013): Three separate films made up this ambitious drama about a couple’s (Chastain and James McAvoy) fight to save their relationship. “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012): Chastain attained unquestionable stardom as a CIA agent at the heart of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. “The Help” (2011): In the popular adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel, a heartbreaking Chastain plays a woman who wants to be included in an elite social circle in 1960s Mississippi. “The Tree of Life” (2011): As the much more emotionally available parent of the story’s central character, Chastain shines. “The Debt” (2010): Chastain has to match the acting of Helen Mirren – no small feat – as they play the younger and older incarnations of the same character, one of the Mossad agents who pursued a Nazi war criminal.

‘It’ yields a mega-sized ‘Chapter Two’ What’s “It” all about? Well, this time, it is about three hours long ... which is maybe about an hour longer than it needs to be. “It Chapter Two” anticipates the desire for more by viewers who made the movie of Stephen King’s novel such a huge box-office hit a couple of years ago. But there’s “more” and then there’s “too much,” and this sequel – which incorporates elements of a prequel – risks going way overboard. In part, that’s to service the excellent young cast from the first movie that reappears in flashbacks, and also bigger-named stars who come aboard as their older incarnations. Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader and Jay Ryan of TV’s “Beauty and the Beast” are in the new group; collectively, they don’t achieve the same repartee as their younger counterparts, but Hader is a standout on a singular basis here. Of course, the terrifying clown Pennywise is still around (again played by Bill Skarsgard),
“IT Chapter Two”
prompting a years-later reunion of the friends who have to revisit fears they thought they’d long left behind. In a Stephen King story? Are you kidding?? Admittedly, any King tale yields a wealth of material. Consider the television miniseries that was made not only of “It,” but also of “The Shining ” and “The Stand,” among others ... and there was enough for an entire multiple-season series of “The Dead Zone,” though much of that was the invention of other writers using the roots set down by King. Still, the point is that King’s works are rich in character and situations, a fact that generally is among their strong suits. What works in print doesn’t always work on film, though, despite the immense success that King adaptations have had on screen over the past 40-years-plus (dating back to the original 1976 version of “Carrie”). A screenplay generally condenses a book into a digestible size for moviegoers, but less condensing than usual seems to have happened with “It Chapter Two.” By the time the picture reaches its loud and expected climax, you might feel like you’ve been through Chapters Three and Four, too. There’s nothing wrong with a movie wanting to give you your money’s worth, especially these days – but after the storytelling economy of the first “It,” “Chapter Two” stands as a renewal of evidence that indeed, less can be more.
“TOY STORY 4” Not only is this (allegedly) final film in the animated Disney-Pixar series as effective as its forerunners, it might leave you an emotional wreck. Its main theme explores what happens when your time supposedly is up ... which is the dilemma of cowboy Woody (again voiced by Tom Hanks), whose new owner is less interested in him than in a makeshift doll she has fashioned from a spork. It has the voice of “Veep’s” Tony Hale, and it’s seen by Woody as his avenue to become useful and wanted again, giving the film the means to yield the franchise’s traditional mix of clever visuals and heart-tugging character development. Of course, Tim Allen also is back as the voice of Buzz Lightyear, and Annie Potts gets special kudos as she reprises the part of Bo Peep. Notable among cast newcomers is Keanu Reeves as a motorcycle-daredevil toy, and there’s a welcome reunion of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, If in voice only. ›››› (G) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

The third of the “Annabelle” movies – and also the seventh in the “Conjuring” film franchise – this thriller makes the title doll the center of terror again. A babysitter (played by Madison Iseman) has no idea what she’s getting into when she goes to work for the demon-researching Warrens (returnees Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), and friends (Katie Sarife and filmmaker-name-sharing Michael Cimino) who come to visit her while she’s minding Warren daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace) also discover the malevolent power of Annabelle. After writing the two earlier “Annabelle” chapters, Gary Dauberman repeated that job and also debuted as a director here; the film has a dedication to Farmiga’s real-life counterpart Lorraine Warren, who passed earlier this year. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
THE GOLDFINCH
“DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE”
R, 2 hr 29 min Drama
Rumored for so long that some – including cast members – developed doubts that it actually would be made, this sequel to the HBO Western series restores the bulk of the original actors and characters to writer-producer David Milch’s saga of the title South Dakota town and its dwellers. A decade has passed in the timeline between the weekly show and the follow-up with a statehood-fueled reunion stirring old emotions, encompassing deep resentment in certain cases, and mixed emotions over changes that advancements and the passage of time have brought to the region. Among the many returning stars are Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant (both of whom get executive-producer credit as well), as well as Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens, Gerald McRaney, Sean Bridgers, W. Earl Brown and Keone Young. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“MIDSOMMAR” As if an American couple (played by Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor) hasn’t had enough relationship strain, plus trauma from a murder-suicide hat they’re connected to, they encounter more trouble while attending a festival at a Swedish commune in this melodrama from horror specialist Ari Aster (“Hereditary”). What’s anticipated as a fun event and a much-needed getaway turns increasingly darker, ultimately making the visitors fear for their lives. William Jackson Harper – who’s used to tales about sites that aren’t what they seem, thanks to his television role on “The Good Place” – and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) also star. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS, N, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “LIFE WITH LUCY: THE COMPLETE SERIES” Lucille Ball had the gift of reinventing herself – while still playing essentially the same character – in a number of television sitcoms, and this Aaron Spelling-produced venture was her last attempt. She plays a widow trying to continue the operation of her late husband’s hardware store, teamed uncomfortably with his business partner (played by veteran Lucy foil Gale Gordon). Complicating matters: the marriage of her daughter (Ann Dusenberry) to his son (Larry Anderson). In an early episode, avowed Lucy devotee John Ritter appeared as himself; guest stars also included Peter Graves, who had starred in “Mission: Impossible” for Ball’s Desilu company, and Kellie Martin. ABC canceled this series before all 13 produced episodes aired, and this set includes the five that didn’t. ››› (Not rated) “CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE” As the holiday season approaches, some of Hallmark Channel’s seasonal fare is getting home-video releases, and this movie filmed in Bucharest is one of the more charming examples from recent years. Merritt Patterson (“The Royals”), who’s become a staple of Hallmark projects, plays a former ice skater enlisted by a country’s king (Andrew Cooper) to train his daughter for a holiday performance. She eventually starts to fall for her employer, but complications arise, particularly the question of a foreigner becoming the queen ... and if you don’t think those will be ironed out by the final act, as we’ve often said, you’ve never seen a Hallmark movie. Brittany Bristow, who also appears on the channel frequently, co-stars. ››› (Not rated)
