WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15 TO 21, 2019

BY JAY BOBBIN

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CANCER, LEO AND VIRGO

ARIES

You’ll need to make a decision without having all the required information. Rely on your judgment and stay away from long-term payment plans to avoid stress.

TAURUS

There will be an interesting offer concerning your career. Even if it’s your dream job, take the time to talk about it with those closest to you before making a decision. As soon as you’re open to it, love will arrive as if by magic.

GEMINI

You have a busy social life. Consider including your lover in your different activities so that the two of you can reconnect. Your team will need your guidance at work.

CANCER

The phone won’t stop ringing this week. Sometimes your clients will need your services and at other times, your friends will need your attention. If you’re single, love will find you where you least expect it.

LEO

You may decide to buy a new car. Be patient while negotiating the price; the seller will come back to you with a better offer. A spontaneous trip may be on the horizon. At work, you’ll have the support of your team.

VIRGO

‘American Horror Story’ tackles 1980s movie thrillers For those who cover television, one of the chief horrors of “American Horror Story” is that relatively little usually is known about a new season before it starts. On the other hand, that’s a built-in necessity of executive producer Ryan Murphy’s famously bizarre FX anthology, which begins its ninth round Wednesday, Sept. 18. This much has been confirmed about it: Titled “1984,” it puts a campy spin on “slasher” movies such as “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” that targeted teen characters during ... yes, the 1980s. That likely accounts for the absence of some “American Horror Story” repertory members, with Evan Peters missing his first season since the series began. “Horror” staple Sarah Paulson reportedly has a drastically reduced role, but Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman are among the returnees who will be quite evident again. John Carroll Lynch also is back. Notable among the cast additions for Season 9 are Matthew Morrison – no stranger to the Ryan Murphy camp, thanks to his six seasons as Will “Mr. Schue” Schuester on “Glee” – and Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, in his first acting turn. A big appeal for actors who have worked on “American Horror Story” time and again is the chance to play a different character in a different story, though suspense and

terror obviously are constants throughout all the variations of the show. “I think you would like to stay in that world as long as you probably can,” Grossman has noted, allowing that “it’s so scary to say anything” about the show without being sure of what should or shouldn’t be revealed. “Something that’s been said many, many times – by many different people, much more intelligently than I will say it – is that Ryan gives you opportunities that other people wouldn’t. “He sees things in you that you don’t see in yourself, and you say, ‘That’s not possible. I can’t do that.’ And he says, ”Oh, but you’re going to be doing it, so I guess it is possible.“ So, who wouldn’t want to take that opportunity over and over again? I really think it’s his world, and we want to be in that world.” Roberts has added, “You see the clips and we are covered in blood, screaming and crying ... and in-between, there’s just so much laughter on this set and ridiculousness. When they call ‘Action!,’ obviously (the work begins), but there is a lot of fun between all of us. And a lot of support. I know that was what made me so excited to come back. It makes me so happy, and I feel so lucky to get to be a part of that.”

When calculating your budget, you’ll realize that you can afford a tropical getaway or a romantic escapade for your next vacation. Changes at work will be profitable.

LIBRA

Changes are afoot in your relationship as well as at home and work. Let emotions pass before making any major decisions. Spontaneity isn’t always the best approach; some decisions should be carefully considered.

SCORPIO

You’ll be persuaded by your friends to treat yourself. You’ll decide to take better care of your looks, thanks to advice from a good friend. Your health will improve when there’s less stress in your life.

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll be the focus of attention for one reason or another this week. You’ll take care of a group that will pay tribute to you, or at least appreciate the work you did. You won’t wait much longer for a promotion.

CAPRICORN

You’ll consider buying a house if there’s a change in your family. You’ll hear about a birth from one of your loved ones that will make you very happy. You must be delicate when dealing with sensitive people.

AQAURIUS

You’ll have lots to talk about this week. At work, you’ll constantly find yourself in the midst of conversations that help expand your professional network and social circle. A new friend will take you on an exciting adventure.

PISCES

You’ll find a brilliant way to get yourself out of a complicated financial situation. You’re a master of persuasion and soon have everyone on your side. In your relationship, better communication is needed to get the affection you desire.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Josh Gad’s Top 10 Movies

BY JAY BOBBIN

“Murder on the Orient Express” (2017): In an all-star cast, Gad displays appreciable snark as the assistant to a crude and cruel businessman (Johnny Depp) in the classic Agatha Christie mystery. “Marshall” (2017): An excellent Gad plays an attorney who helps Supreme Court Justiceto-be Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) on his journey toward legislative greatness. “Beauty and the Beast” (2017): In this Disney do-over, Gad makes a fine live-action representation of LeFou, perpetually mistreated associate of the Belle-worshipping Gaston (Luke Evans). “A Dog’s Purpose” (2017): Gad lends his voice to multiple characters in the saga of a canine whose spirit passes through several embodiments in a search for its true reason for being. “Frozen” (2013): Gad’s signature movie role to date is one in which he’s not even seen ... as animated snowman Olaf, soon to return in a Disney holiday-season sequel. “Jobs” (2013): Fine work by Gad as early professional partner Steve Wozniak helps this profile of computer-industry visionary Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher). “Thanks for Sharing” (2012): Tackling risky material, Gad is effective as a doctor whose vices threaten his relationships and career. “Love & Other Drugs” (2010): Gad has some genuinely funny moments as the brother of a novice pharmaceutical salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal). “The Rocker” (2008): The fact that Gad plays a character with the last name Gadman is a notable element of this comedy about a supposedly washed-up drummer (Rainn Wilson) who gets a new chance at musical glory. “21” (2008): Gad made his first major movie mark as a student whose friend (Jim Sturgess) got involved in using superior math skills to cheat at card games in casinos.

‘Angry Birds’ face angrier enemy A movie based on a popular gaming app might seem like a money grab to get young audiences where they live, but “The Angry Birds Movie” fared pretty well at the box office ... thus ensuring that we now get “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” For those who fear the malady known as “sequel-itis,” which afflicts us with sequels that really aren’t necessary, this actually isn’t a bad follow-up. That might not be the highest praise possible, but at least this is creative and entertaining enough to keep you from feeling you’ve simply fallen prey to a plot to get you to open your wallet or purse at the box office. The voice cast is largely a “Saturday Night Live” who’s-who led by “Angry Birds Movie” returnee Jason Sudeikis as Red, who debates joining the residents of Pig Island – formerly

“The Angry Birds Movie 2”

the birds’ enemies – to mount an opposition to an eagle brigade that is targeting the hogs and has the birds next on its list. Red and pig leader Leonard, voiced by fellow “SNL” alum Bill Hader, then assemble a team to mount a defense based on the recruits’ special skills ... sort of like “The Magnificent Seven,” one of the amusing nods that the filmmakers make to classic stories here. Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Maya Rudolph, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s” Rachel Bloom and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) also have significant voice roles, making for a neat assortment of sounds. And the computerized animation is unique enough to set this apart from so many other entries in the genre lately. As successful as many apps are, trying to develop their characters and concepts into feature-length films is a very particular challenge. A game on a phone, computer screen or other devices doesn’t require a full back story, yet the one developed by moviemakers has to stay true enough to the characters to seem like a logical extension. “The Angry Birds Movie 2” achieves that, despite it being no simple feat, and also does it in a way that can appeal to viewers who don’t even know what an app is. (Yes, such individuals do exist, hard to believe though that may be.) Maybe the best thing about “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is that it won’t make you angry about paying to see a sequel that wasn’t needed. The picture is enjoyable in its own right – about the birds, but not for the birds.

“DARK PHOENIX” What happens when one of the “X-Men” mutants goes bad? The question is posed by this adventure, intended to bring an end to that particular Marvel franchise, at least for the time being. Jean Grey, played again by Sophie Turner (“Game of Thrones”), is the character who considers doing evil. Though she previously didn’t outperform the X-Men – nor, for that matter, the X-Women – she’s front and center after her role in saving a space shuttle results in her becoming the most powerful person in the whole group. It also means a struggle for her in choosing between using her newly enhanced powers for right or wrong. Jennifer Lawrence returns as Raven, who tries to show Jean the light, while Jessica Chastain appears as a villain who would be only too happy to bring Jean over to her side. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are among other cast members who turn up again. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK

In the same week it debuts on PBS, documentary-making pro Ken Burns’ history of the title genre – from the 1920s forward – offers three hours of material that isn’t in the telecast in its home-video version. The program traces the roots of country (and such corollary aspects as Western swing, bluegrass and rockabilly) largely by telling the stories of some of its most famous stars including Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. Expectedly, there’s plenty of performance footage, plus interviews with many observers and participants about what has made country music so special and enduring. ››› (Not rated: P) (Also on Blu-ray) “MODERN FAMILY: THE COMPLETE TENTH SEASON” Time is getting shorter for the Pritchetts and the Dunphys, since the award-winning ABC sitcom is about to head into its final season. This set offers its next-to-last year, which opens with a Fourth of July parade that sees Jay (Ed O’Neill) serve as Grand Marshal. Some of the other plots revolve around Haley’s (Sarah Hyland) romantic dilemma, a complicated Super Bowl party, a tragic family loss and recollections of a number of birthdays. Guest stars include Mira Sorvino, Nathan Lane, Fred Willard and Ed Begley Jr. Julie Bowen (who also directed one of the episodes), Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet also are among the regular cast members. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “THE GOOD FIGHT: SEASON THREE” The CBS All Access sequel to “The Good Wife” had extra exposure recently, with its first season being broadcast on the parent CBS network, but this third round of the law drama adds Michael Sheen (“Masters of Sex”) to the cast as an attorney who presence prompts some deep divisions within the firm. Problems at home heighten the tension even more for Diane (Christine Baranski), as do concerns about pay disparity and political swing votes. Rose Leslie, Cush Jumbo, Delroy Lindo, Audra McDonald, Sarah Steele and Michael Boatman also star. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “BOTTOM OF THE 9TH” Joe Manganiello was among the producers of this baseball-themed drama, in which he also stars with his significant other, “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara. He plays a once-promising sports prospect whose hopes were derailed by circumstances that landed him in prison for two decades. Now out of jail, he determines to set his life back on its right course – which includes pursuing another chance for glory on the baseball diamond. Denis O’Hare, Michael Rispoli, Vincent Pastore (“The Sopranos”) and Burt Young (“Rocky”) also appear. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS, P, V) “BILOXI BLUES” The second chapter of legendary playwright Neil Simon’s trilogy about Eugene Jerome makes its Blu-ray debut in its Mike Nichols-directed screen version, with Matthew Broderick (who repeated his stage portrayal) starring as Brooklyn teen Eugene, a World War II draftee. Channeled to Biloxi, Miss., for basic training, he gets plenty of life lessons from his fellow soldiers – and also from a drill sergeant (Christopher Walken) who puts his underlings through their paces in multiple ways. Penelope Ann Miller, who also was in the Broadway staging, plays her role again here. ››› (PG-13: AS, P)
