Jimmy Smits practices ‘Bluff City Law’ on NBC
You’ll start the week with a desire to conquer the world. Learn to channel your energy so you’re not burning the candle at both ends. In your love life, let romance happen naturally.
VIRGO
Think before you put your ideas into action. It’s more important to make a budget and stick to it than it is to achieve your personal objectives. Stress will wear you out quickly.
LIBRA
Jimmy Smits won an Emmy Award during his tenure on “L.A. Law,” but he’s still having to brush up on legal matters for his new series role. With stints on such other shows as “NYPD Blue,” “The West Wing,” “Dexter” and “Sons of Anarchy” also under his belt, the actor returns to weekly television as the NBC drama “Bluff City Law” premieres Monday, Sept. 23. Smits stars as renowned Memphis lawyer Elijah Strait, who reunites with his impulsive attorney daughter Sydney (played by Caitlin McGee) upon her mother’s death. She ponders his offer to rejoin his firm, though their vastly differing styles signal complications to come. After portraying “L.A. Law’s” idealistic Victor Sifuentes, the sincere Smits notes that his new alter ego Strait “doesn’t have the kind of bounce in the same way. Luckily, besides having a really great pilot script that is a wonderful jumpoff point for all these characters and this (father-daughter) relationship, we had some really great technical people that were able to work with us that are (Memphis) attorneys ... and a particular duo that have the same type of father-anddaughter relationship. That was really helpful as well.” Co-star McGee reasons that her new connection to Smits “reflects our relationship in the show as well as our relationship in life. He has more experience as an actor than I do. We’re all just getting to know these characters,
and how we approach the law in the show is very different. He’s conservative (in the series), and I like to wage war and get thrown in jail and such, but I think it’s just fun to work with someone who has that experience. We’re all starting from scratch with these people and getting to know them ourselves.” Series creator and writer Dean Georgaris (“The Brave”) vows that “Bluff City Law’s” cases will stay in step with the times: “Issues like free speech, issues like privacy, these are things that we’re all talking about right now. Frankly, it’s a really interesting time because these definitions are changing. Every week, we’ll be taking those on – and, by the way, sometimes from a more comedic perspective. If it’s all drama, I think it doesn’t feel real. If you don’t laugh every now and then, it’s not representative of life.” With fellow “24” alum Jayne Atkinson also in the “Bluff City Law” cast, Smits says the decision to tackle another series doesn’t come easily for him. Admitting that the location filming is leaving him “homesick,” he notes, “The bottom line for me has got to be what’s on the page and who the people you’re going to be working with are. And, is the work going to be challenging?”
There will be lots of people surrounding you this week. While inspiring and exciting, it’s important to take time to rest. At work, a project or task may be significantly delayed.
SCORPIO
You’re pressed for time this week. Luckily, you know how to create and stick to a schedule. You’ll be able to accomplish everything on your to-do list and even relax afterwards. Your friends will join you for a well-deserved outing.
SAGITTARIUS
With vacation prices at their lowest, you may decide to go on a last-minute trip. By taking a step back from your responsibilities, you’ll be able to make important decisions about your career.
CAPRICORN
Change is afoot at home and at work. You’ll be able to put an end to a taxing situation and start achieving your personal goals. An emotional hurricane will motivate this transformation.
AQUARIUS
Your patience will serve you well this week. You may finally come to an agreement with certain groups or with the courts. You’ll assert your rights as well as those of your people. A marriage proposal will come out of nowhere.
PISCES
Work will be stressful this week. If you make time for your love life, you’ll benefit: being with your partner will relax you. Little changes to your routine can make a big difference in your relationship.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Gerard Butler’s Top 10 Movies
BY JAY BOBBIN
“Den of Thieves” (2018): Butler is perfectly brawny as a troubled Los Angeles police detective on a collision course with a vicious robbery team. “Olympus Has Fallen” (2013): A nicely rugged Butler plays a former Secret Service man who literally battles his way back to honor when terrorists invade the White House. “Chasing Mavericks” (2012): The part of a famously radical surfer is a fine fit for Butler in this fact-inspired drama. “Machine Gun Preacher” (2011): Butler is quite effective in the true story of an unlikely savior of indentured youngsters in the Sudan.
“How to Train Your Dragon” (2010): Milking his Scottish roots, Butler is distinctive as the voice of Stoick the Vast in this animated fantasy.
“Law Abiding Citizen” (2009): A not entirely unsympathetic Butler is excellent as a grieving man determined to even the score with those who let the killers of his wife and child go free. “RocknRolla” (2008): A wonderfully gritty Butler plays one of the thieves involved in dealings and double-crossings in London’s underworld. “P.S. I Love You” (2007): In a role that set him up for romantic comedies, Butler is hugely engaging – mainly in flashbacks – as a deceased man mourned by his wife (Hilary Swank). “300” (2006): Much of the film’s imagery is computer-generated, but there’s no mistaking Butler’s very real physicality as King Leonidas in the often brutal saga of the Spartans’ uprising.

Gerard Butler has Round 3 as ‘Fallen’ Secret Service agent A movie based on a popular gaming app might seem like a money grab to get young audiences where they live, but “The Angry Birds Movie” fared pretty well at the box office ... thus ensuring that we now get “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” For those who fear the malady known as “sequel-itis,” which afflicts us with sequels that really aren’t necessary, this actually isn’t a bad follow-up. That might not be the highest praise possible, but at least this is creative and entertaining enough to keep you from feeling you’ve simply fallen prey to a plot to get you to open your wallet or purse at the box office. The voice cast is largely a “Saturday Night Live” who’s-who led by “Angry Birds Movie” returnee Jason Sudeikis as Red, who debates joining the residents of Pig Island – formerly
“The Phantom of the Opera” (2004): It’s no small feat to play the title character in one of the most popular musicals of all time, and Butler pulls it off impressively.

the birds’ enemies – to mount an opposition to an eagle brigade that is targeting the hogs and has the birds next on its list. Red and pig leader Leonard, voiced by fellow “SNL” alum Bill Hader, then assemble a team to mount a defense based on the recruits’ special skills ... sort of like “The Magnificent Seven,” one of the amusing nods that the filmmakers make to classic stories here. Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Maya Rudolph, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s” Rachel Bloom and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) also have significant voice roles, making for a neat assortment of sounds. And the computerized animation is unique enough to set this apart from so many other entries in the genre lately. As successful as many apps are, trying to develop their characters and concepts into feature-length films is a very particular challenge. A game on a phone, computer screen or other devices doesn’t require a full back story, yet the one developed by moviemakers has to stay true enough to the characters to seem like a logical extension. “The Angry Birds Movie 2” achieves that, despite it being no simple feat, and also does it in a way that can appeal to viewers who don’t even know what an app is. (Yes, such individuals do exist, hard to believe though that may be.) Maybe the best thing about “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is that it won’t make you angry about paying to see a sequel that wasn’t needed. The picture is enjoyable in its own right – about the birds, but not for the birds.
“SHAFT” To invoke the classic Isaac Hayes theme song, can you dig it? After the versions of the detective story made by directors Gordon Parks and John Singleton, this latest take merges several generations of Shafts as the franchise approaches the 50-year mark. Original star Richard Roundtree and his successor, Samuel L. Jackson, both are back – but the real focus here is on their characters’ grandson and son, played by Jessie T. Usher (“Survivor’s Remorse”). He’s an FBI employee, and even though he frowns upon his relatives’ method of fighting violence with more violence, he has to rely on them to probe a friend’s death. While entertaining enough, the Tim Story-directed picture (co-written by Kenya Barris, of “black-ish” fame) can’t decide whether it wants to be part of the genre or a parody of it, giving the film a continually shifting tone; however, the presence of Regina Hall as the youngest Shaft’s mother is a bonus. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

THE LION KING (2019)
“YESTERDAY” Say that George, John, Paul and Ringo never united, and say that an entire catalog of some of the best-known songs of all time never existed. That’s the premise of this enjoyable fantasy based on the conceit of a world without the Beatles. Driven by two top talents, director Danny Boyle and writer Richard Curtis, the tale subjects the world to a 12-second blackout in which all memory of the Fab Four is wiped out ... almost. Only one struggling musician, played nicely by Himesh Patel, remembers the Beatles and their tunes – and decides to claim the songs as his own. That results in the character ultimately having an ethical crisis as the public marvels at his creative genius, which of course is really the genius of others. It also yields some moments of inspired humor, as when Ed Sheeran suggests that a certain song would be better with the title “Hey Dude.” This pleasant diversion also is helped by good acting turns by Lily James and “Saturday Night Live’s” Kate McKinnon as the hero’s manager and agent, plus a funny cameo by James Corden. DVD extras: seven “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Boyle and Curtis; deleted scenes; outtakes; alternate opening and ending. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) “CHILD’S PLAY” Yes, Chucky is back! The homicidal doll gets a rebirth in this acceptable update of the horror tale that launched a franchise. Aubrey Plaza’s typical edge is welcome as she inherits the role of a woman whose young son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) becomes the delighted owner of a “Buddi” doll enhanced with artificial intelligence – and, for the purposes of this version, the voice of “Star Wars” icon Mark Hamill. Mayhem soon ensues, and unless Andy can manage to convince anyone that Chucky is the culprit, tragedy could be the result for all concerned. Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) co-stars as the detective next door who, expectedly, gets a lot more than he bargained for; Tim Matheson also appears as the tech tycoon behind the doll’s creation. DVD extras: four “making-of” documentaries; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, P, V) “PAVAROTTI” Ron Howard clearly is a fan of music’s greats, having done his acclaimed “Eight Days a Week: The Touring Years” documentary about the Beatles several years ago ... and more recently turning his attention to an opera legend by directing this fine profile. Of course, a wealth of performance footage is included as the story of Luciano Pavarotti’s life and career is recounted, but the result also incorporates previously unseen footage. It also features comments by such friends and associates as Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo – who teamed with Pavarotti on the celebrated Three Tenors initiative – as well as Princess Diana, Nelson Mandela, Spike Lee, Bono and Stevie Wonder. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries. ››› (PG-13: P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “HOLOCAUST” One of the most acclaimed of all television miniseries gets a relaunch on home video, thanks to its debut on Blu-ray. A winner of four Emmy Awards – encompassing the performances of Meryl Streep, Michael Moriarty and Blanche Baker – writer Gerald Green’s (“The Last Angry Man”) emotionally powerful 1978 drama follows two German families in the years before and during World War II. Moriarty plays a lawyer who joins the Nazi Party to support his wife and children, rising through the ranks quickly and ultimately being placed in charge of literal lifeor-death decisions. Streep and Baker portray members of a clan that chafes under Nazi rule, making huge sacrifices to maintain their existence as best they can, given the circumstances. James Woods, Fritz Weaver, Rosemary Harris, David Warner, Ian Holm, Joseph Bottoms, Tovah Feldshuh and Sam Wanamaker also are members of the outstanding cast. ›››› (Not rated: AS, V)
