‘Bless the Harts’ joins Fox’s Sunday animation lineup Not every cartoon makes its way into Fox’s popular “Animation Domination” block of Sunday comedies. Then again, not every show boasts the combined talents of “Saturday Night Live” alums Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Emmy-winning writer-producer Emily Spivey. The Sept. 29 premiere of “Bless the Harts” introduces a Southern family constantly striving for a better financial life, though love and laughs do much to help them get by. Wiig voices waitress and single mother Jenny, with Rudolph as her mother Betty, who’s convinced that the “right” scratch-off ticket will make her a big lottery winner. Jillian Bell and Ike Barinholtz also are heard. “I sort of went to the people that I love writing for,” Spivey explains, “Maya Rudolph, I’ve been writing for for 50 years now – and then, I always was picturing Ike for (the role of Jenny’s longtime boyfriend) Wayne. The interesting thing about it is how much the actors really bring to the characters. Once you start hearing their voice, it’s sort of like a great loop of listening to each other and really, the characters come to life.” Rudolph notes that she and Spivey “met in our 20s at (the comedy group) The Groundlings. It didn’t dawn on me until we were sharing an office in New York at ‘Saturday Night Live’ that when I’d answer the phone, people would ask me if I was Southern. Because I spent so much time with her, I have absorbed her accent. I

don’t even know if that is a North Carolina accent. Like, I know how Emily’s mother pronounces ‘tacos.’ She says, ‘tacas.’ So, I’m just doing Emily and her mother.” Bell also has had previous experience with Spivey, and she maintains she was “very excited to come on board” in the “Bless the Harts” voice cast. “When I read (the part of Jenny’s daughter) Violet, I was like, ‘I love her. I want to make sure she’s lovable to everyone, too.’ She can come off very sarcastic and dry, but there’s real heart behind her character.” Partnered with Spivey as executive producers of “Bless the Harts” are Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, her fellow “The Last Man on Earth” veterans who also have had big-screen success with “The Lego Movie” and the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse.” Miller says, “Our job has been mostly to sort of read scripts and give thoughts and watch cuts of animation, and just try and help out wherever we can creatively ... but it’s really Emily’s voice. It’s Emily’s experience. She’s the one who grew up in North Carolina and knows these characters and breathes these characters. So, we’re just trying to help out in any way we can.”

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Ghost’s Top 10 Movies
BY JAY BOBBIN
“Paranormal Activity” (2007): The
“found footage” style does much for this lowbudgeted but huge-grossing drama about a couple (Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat) terrorized by a malevolent spirit in their home. “The Sixth Sense” (1999): “I see dead people.” What else needs to be known about M. Night Shyamalan’s legendary chiller about a particularly prescient youngster (Haley Joel Osment) counseled by a psychiatrist (Bruce Willis)? “Ghost” (1990): Much more romantic than terrifying, the ongoing love story of pottery maker Molly (Demi Moore) and her murdered love Sam (Patrick Swayze) drew many fans back to theaters time and again. “Beetlejuice” (1988): Laughs are mixed with scares in director Tim Burton’s tale as the mischievous title spirit (Michael Keaton) causes problems for novice ghosts (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) and the new, living tenants of the house they all inhabit. “Ghostbusters” (1984): “Who ya gonna call?” Come on ... you know. Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and co-writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis are on their guard against ectoplasm as they chase spectres around New York. “Poltergeist” (1982): This Steven Spielberg-produced scare show gave MGM one of its last true hits, with Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams as parents struggling to recover their ghost-abducted young daughter (Heather O’Rourke).

Thriller’s loopholes make it easier to ‘Let Go’ of it
A movie turned television series called “Frequency” hinged on a strange radio signal that enabled someone to communicate across time with their late father. Well, somebody has taken that story (maybe not literally, but at least the basics of it have been retained), made a few adjustments and renamed it “Don’t Let Go” in a film that will seem awfully familiar to some viewers. This time, a detective is grieving over the murders of several of his relatives, so imagine his surprise when he gets a cell-phone call from a person who apparently is ... his recently slain niece! If it’s really her, has time somehow bridged itself for the two of them to put them back in contact? And if that’s the fact, can he prevent her from being killed again? David Oyelowo and Storm Reid
“The Legend of Hell House” (1973):
This British drama is a true hair-raiser, with Pamela Franklin and Roddy McDowall among those playing supernatural investigators enlisted to prove or debunk the veracity of the last alleged haunted house. “The Haunting” (1963): Still one of the most frightening of all ghost stories, director Robert Wise’s film features Julie Harris and Claire Bloom as two of the sleuths probing a house reputedly besieged by paranormal forces.
“The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” (1947):
Another ghost tale that relies much more on charm than chills, this classic stars Rex Harrison as a sea captain’s spirit that helps a financially troubled widow (Gene Tierney). “A Christmas Carol” (1938): Obviously, there have been a lot of versions of Charles Dickens’ tale of Scrooge and his ghostly visitors, but we’ll pick one of the earliest, with Reginald Owen just great as the miserly central character.
“SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME” Don’t turn away from the end credits here or you’ll miss a major twist, and one that certainly will be vital to the next movie in the series. The story that leads up to it is quite entertaining, with monstrous villains assuming the forms of Earth’s natural elements as Peter Parker and his pals take a school trip through Europe. Their first stop is Venice, which barely survives an attack by the so-called Elementals – and then, Prague scarcely fares better. Tom Holland hits the right notes in his latest turn as the web-slinger, whether trying to woo Mary Jane (played by Zendaya) rather clumsily or scoping out a would-be mentor who comes to be known as Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal, the latest example of the fun casting of known stars that the Marvel movies delve into). The overseas locales also do much to help the film distinguish itself from the many other films in the Marvel canon; Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders turn up again as Nick Fury and Maria Hill, with Marisa Tomei and Jon Favreau also back as Aunt May and “Happy” Hogan. ››› (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

That set-up leaves the potential for a lot of loopholes in the plot, so the best thing possible for it is to have good actors who sell the premise hard enough for the audience not to think much about those holes until they’ve left the theater. Luckily, “Don’t Let Go” has two such stars: David Oyelowo (“Selma”) as the detective, and Storm Reid (“A Wrinkle in Time”) as the niece. They give the tale from screenwriterdirector Jacob Estes the level of urgency it needs, since this isn’t just a race against time: It’s a race across time. Also quite good, for as long as he’s around, is Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) as the young woman’s father; he proves to be a great example of doing a lot with a little. Alfred Molina and Mykelti Williamson also raise the acting game, as they typically do, in the time they have here. Still, when a film is asking for this big a suspension of disbelief, there’s only so much the on-screen talent can do. You have to buy into a whole lot, and the picture doesn’t really earn that investment, which is more a result of the storytelling than the performing. Plots like this tend to paint themselves into a corner eventually, and while it’s involving for a while, “Don’t Let Go” ultimately ends up in that same bind. Answers are supplied, but they’re more frustrating than enlightening ... never the preferred outcome in these cases. The dedicated work of Oyelowo and Reid notwithstanding, in the end, it’s simply easier to just let go of “Don’t Let Go.”

In virtually every case over the past three decades-plus, the use of the title name has meant only one thing ... a drama or documentary on the 1986 disaster at a Soviet nuclear facility, which resulted from an accident that motivated a number of key individuals to try to protect Europe from untold contamination. This widely acclaimed HBO miniseries earned particular praise for writer Craig Mazin, and at the time of this writing, it was up for 19 Primetime Emmy Awards including outstanding limited series. Filmed in Lithuania, the production boasts an excellent cast led by Jared Harris as nuclear physicist Valery Legasov, one of the first to realize how far-reaching the situation could become; a cloak of disinformation complicated efforts to contain the problem. Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson, Paul Ritter, Jessie Buckley, Adrian Rawlins and Con O’Neill also star. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “TELL ME A STORY: SEASON ONE” Some of the most classic fairy tales, particularly those with a penchant for horror, get a reworking in this CBS All Access series. “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Hansel and Gretel” are the ones rebooted in this inaugural round, with Billy Magnussen – who also will appear in the next James Bond movie – as a human incarnation of the Wolf who threatened Red Riding Hood. He’s a teacher who preys upon one of his students (Danielle Campbell), but there’s also another humanized wolf around ... a vengeance-seeking restaurateur (James Wolk, “Zoo”). Creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson again casts Paul Wesley (“The Vampire Diaries”) here, with Dania Ramirez, Sam Jaeger (“Parenthood”) and Kim Cattrall also featured. The show’s second season begins streaming soon. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “CHARMED: SEASON ONE” To be clear, this is the first season of the current CW reboot of the long-running series about sibling witches who – when they combine their abilities – exude the so-called Power of Three. Sarah Jeffery (who appeared previously as Jennifer Lopez’s daughter on “Shades of Blue”), Melonie Diaz and Madeleine Mantock play the sorceresses – one of whom has been unknown to the others – who unite their special abilities following their mother’s death. A presumed university professor (Rupert Evans) is the Charmed Ones’ “Whitelighter,” advising them on keeping mankind safe from evil. Several “Jane the Virgin” veterans, including Jennie Snyder Urman, are among the executive producers of the show; its second season begins in mid-October, when it relocates from Sundays to Fridays. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “SESAME STREET: 50 YEARS AND COUNTING!”

Indeed, one of the most classic and enduring of all children’s shows is marking a half-century milestone, and this two-DVD set compiles some of the most memorable segments of the series that now is shown on both PBS and HBO. Guests including Amy Poehler and Ricky Gervais turn up to engage with such favorite Muppet characters as Big Bird, Kermit and Elmo ... and the debut of a particularly significant Muppet, autistic Julia, also is recalled here. Previously unseen outtakes featuring the legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, among others, are part of the content as well. ››› (Not rated) “AMERICAN MASTERS: RAUL JULIA – THE WORLD’S A STAGE” A fabulous actor is recalled in this recently televised PBS profile who made marks on the Broadway stage and the screen (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”) before his death far too young at age 54. Rita Moreno, Edward James Olmos, Anjelica Huston, James Earl Jones, Sonia Braga and Esai Morales are among those who discuss having worked with Julia, while Andy Garcia, Jimmy Smits and others reflect on the artistic path he helped pave for them. Friends and relatives also help trace the career that took Julia from Puerto Rico to New York, where his work in the city’s Shakespeare Festival was a harbinger of his greatness as an Emmy-winning. ››› (Not rated: P)
