WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8 TO 14, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: ARIES, TAURUS AND GEMINI
ARIES
Crowds, responsibilities and stress will dominate a big part of the week. Try to relax — if you don’t, your health will suffer. Unwinding will do you much good.
TAURUS
Even if your schedule is full of professional and personal obligations, take some time to disconnect and visit good friends you haven’t seen lately. Happy hour with colleagues will be worthwhile.
GEMINI
If your relationship has been neglected due to one or both of you working overtime, you’ll want to take a trip to get the spark back. A family conflict will finally be resolved.
CANCER
There will be lots of excitement in the air this week. Your child’s accomplishment (their first steps or a graduation, for example) will make you emotional.
LEO
You’ll weigh the pros and cons for a long time before making a big decision. Gather all the information necessary and then let your intuition guide you. If you’ve been single for a long time, you may receive a marriage proposal.
VIRGO
Scott Ryan is ‘Mr. Inbetween’ again as FX series returns Scott Ryan deems being in-between American and Australian viewers a good place for him. Again. Though he wasn’t necessarily counting on a second season of his FX series “Mr. Inbetween.” the show’s star, creator, writer and executive producer is pleased to return with 10 new half-hour episodes beginning Thursday, Sept. 12. Gritty and morbidly amusing, the saga of brooding hit man Ray Shoesmith (Ryan) gets fresh twists through his new relationship with paramedic Ally (played by fellow returnee Brooke Satchwell) as he does his best to raise his adoring young daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura) and care for his illness-afflicted brother Bruce (Nicholas Cassim). First televised in his native Australia just after being brought to the U.S., “Mr. Inbetween” expands upon Ryan’s Melbourne Underground Film Festival-winning 2005 movie “The Magician,” which introduced the Shoesmith character. “I started writing plays when I was about 10 years old, when I was still at primary school,” Ryan explains. “And it was always dark comedies that I was writing, so that’s just what I do. I can’t help it. “It’s that balance thing, so I’m always trying to put humor in the situations,” notes Ryan. “Even though some of those situations might be quite dramatic or dark or tragic, there’s just that natural instinct in me as a writer to want to try to make it kind of funny, too.”
Though “Mr. Inbetween” has its tough moments, Ryan insists physical conflict isn’t his main concern: “I just like people talking to each other. I remember, when I was much younger, watching ‘Lethal Weapon’ ... the Mel Gibson film. My favorite part of that is when he goes over to Danny Glover’s house and just hangs out with his kids. That’s my favorite scene in that movie. It’s the kind of mundane things that I find interesting, more than the ‘going for the action’ stuff.” A producer and editor on “The Magician,” Nash Edgerton – brother of actor-filmmaker Joel – also is a “Mr. Inbetween” executive producer as well as its director. Costar Satchwell has seen Ryan’s creativity close-up for some time, also since they were roommates for several months. Of their characters in the show, she says, “As far as she’s concerned, he works in security. And she’s a paramedic, so her work life is very, very busy. Their domestic life together is very simple, initially. There is a very genuine, energetic connection between Ray and Ally.” Satchwell adds about Ryan, “I have huge respect for what he’s done. It’s extraordinary to reach a global audience on your first run and then to get a second go at it, and I think this will supersede the first series. As a friend, I’m incredibly proud.”
There’s lots of work ahead and many details to attend to. You’ll also finalize a deal or settle a dispute that will require your leadership. You’ll be proud of this and may receive accolades for your efforts.
LIBRA
Put your best face forward. Take the time to spoil yourself, rebuild your wardrobe or even change your look completely. You’ll improve yourself in some way and attract attention thanks to your confidence and charm.
SCORPIO
You’ll devote much of your time to your family and/or home. You may also take up a regular activity with a friend that allows you to let loose and have fun. Negotiations with certain people may be drawn out.
SAGITTARIUS
You won’t hold your tongue, even if you’re sometimes misunderstood. Lead by example so your words are clear. Affection is part of a healthy and stable relationship.
CAPRICORN
There will be unexpected expenses this week. However, you’ll be able to negotiate a loan from the bank to avoid straining your budget. Sometimes, you need to gain the upper hand before someone helps you out.
AQUARIUS
It’s a busy week, and you’ll accomplish something that people will talk about for a long time to come. Make yourself available for a family member that needs your support. After restructuring at work, you’ll come out ahead.
PISCES
Think before starting any new project now. You’re not the type to listen to opinions, even when your decisions affect others. It would do you good to develop a sense of team spirit, especially in your relationship.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Melissa McCarthy’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018): McCarthy was an Oscar nominee for her compelling portrayal of real-life wrirer Lee Israel, who began to fabricate her work to keep selling articles, in this seriocomic true-life tale. “Life of the Party” (2018): More or less putting a gender-reversing spin on “Back to School,” McCarthy is amusing as a newly divorced woman who joins her daughter (Molly Gordon) by resuming her education at the same college. “The Boss” (2016): A quite funny McCarthy rules as a former business magnate who has a tough time readjusting to the outside world after doing time for insider trading. “Spy” (2015): McCarthy is a riot in a reteaming with writer-director Paul Feig, as she plays a CIA analyst who becomes a very unlikely field agent. “St. Vincent” (2014): In a change-ofpace role, McCarthy plays a working mom who enlists a new neighbor (Bill Murray) for after-school sitting duties. “The Heat” (2013): McCarthy and Sandra Bullock make a terrific comedic duo as crime-busters targeting a drug kingpin in Boston. “Identity Thief” (2013): A good part for McCarthy casts her as said thief, whose swiping of a same-named businessman’s (Jason Bateman) identity prompts him to chase her. “This Is 40” (2012): This Judd Apatow-directed comedy, which focuses on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters from “Knocked Up,” marks one of the rare times McCarthy has taken a supporting role since “Bridesmaids.” “Bridesmaids” (2011): Well, of course. In the role that immediately elevated her pop-culture standing and earned her an Oscar nomination, McCarthy plays a memorably bawdy wedding-attendant-to-be. “The Life of David Gale” (2003): As her character name – Nico the Goth Girl – suggests, McCarthy is a brief standout in this Kevin Spacey-starring drama.

Crime is what’s cooking in ‘The Kitchen’ It’s said that behind every good man is a good woman ... but that can go for the flip side of that coin, too. Based on a comic-book series, “The Kitchen” is a cousin of such other movies as “Widows” and even the television series “Good Girls” to a degree, since it dispatches several ladies to continue the misdeeds of the men in their lives. The film presents a really interesting starring trio in Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss – and even though two of those names usually connote humor, this isn’t a comedy, as its considerable violence and generally rough tenor confirm. After their mobster spouses go to jail for their activities in 1970s-era Hell’s Kitchen, the women elect to continue their men’s business ... and quite a violent business, it is. Certain of the wives are more broken

up about their mates’ three-year trip down the river than others, but they all see value for themselves in carrying on their men’s missions. However, in doing so, they risk their efforts as well as their general safety by attracting the attention of the FBI and other criminals. “The Kitchen” marks the directing debut of Andrea Berloff, the co-writer of “Straight Outta Compton,” and she invests much of the same grittiness here. She also plays to each of her stars’ strengths, and that is no simple accomplishment, given how diverse the performers in question are. McCarthy has come into her own as someone who can balance drama with comedy, especially with her recent Oscar nomination for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Haddish also has been making her mark at both ends of the performing spectrum, getting credit for tempering her well-known humor with nuanced acting. And thanks to both “Mad Men” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” – among other credits – Moss is renowned as one of the top actresses on television these days. Also worth singling out in the cast of “The Kitchen” is veteran character actress Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), typically fine as another underworld figure who shouldn’t be messed with. The notion of women supporting women doesn’t necessarily extend to her, as the picture’s central trio finds out rather quickly. In the hands of some skilled talents, the heat gets turned up fairly high here ... but if you don’t like it hot, just as the ads (and the old adage) suggest, stay out of “The Kitchen.”
“ALADDIN” It’s a whole new world, all right, when it comes to one of the Disney studio’s recent effort to turn an animated classic into a live-action feature. Given the exotic nature of the tale, you know it’s going to be a big production – so the catch is to keep the songs and emotions from being dwarfed by the outsized visual value, which director Guy Ritchie clearly puts an emphasis on. The true star here is Will Smith as the genie; reinventing a role so strongly associated with Robin Williams is a tall order, and it takes someone who can inject his own mighty personality into the part. That would be Smith, whose genie is set free by young Aladdin (Mena Massoud), who needs his help to win the heart of Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott). This newer “Aladdin” casts its spell to a certain degree, but for the full experience, keep the 1992 cartoon in mind – which isn’t hard to do, since a new “Signature Collection” of that version also is debuting on home video. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME EXTENDED CUT PG-13, 2 hr 13 min Action/Adventure, Comedy
ANGEL HAS FALLEN R, 1 hr 54 min Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller

47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED PG-13, 1 hr 29 min Action/Adventure, Drama, Horror, Suspense/Thriller
This action franchise certainly knows its audience by now, so it’s no shock that the latest chapter only amps up the mayhem, and to appreciable effect. Keanu Reeves remains ideally cast as the hit man of few words but lots of lethal moves, finding himself the target of many other assassins after committing a killing at a New York hotel that was supposed to be off-limits for such an act. Wick then goes on the international run to stay alive, getting particular help from a woman from his past, played by Halle Berry (brushing up on her “Die Another Day” skills). Anjelica Huston also plays a helper, and an expected standout on the side of the enemies is Asia Kate Dillon (“Billions”). Ian McShane and Reeves’ “Matrix” crony Laurence Fishburne also are on board again, but as in the earlier “Wick” adventures, dogs might be the cast members most beloved by viewers. Really. DVD extras: two theatrical trailers; three “making-of” documentaries. ››› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THIS IS US: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON” As the new year of the much-acclaimed NBC show (which already has been renewed through Season 6) approaches, this round currently is up for nine Emmy Awards including outstanding drama series and individual bids for Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown (the latter already an Emmy winner for the show). Stories here include a risky journey toward parenthood by Kate and Toby (Chrissy Metz, Emmy nominee Chris Sullivan), Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) determination to find out about Jack’s (Ventimiglia) time in Vietnam, and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) struggle to maintain her own personhood as Randall (Brown) becomes increasingly immersed in politics. Notable guests during the season include Griffin Dunne and Emmy nominee Michael Angarano (as the same character at different ages) as well as Emmy-nominated Phylicia Rashad. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “ARMSTRONG” This documentary about the first man to walk on the moon may have missed the recent rush of offerings tied to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, but it might benefit from standing apart from that pack in its home-video debut. The personal life and quite public career of astronaut Neil Armstrong – a rather reluctant hero – are traced through film clips and comments from many who knew him well, including his widow and children, crewmate Michael Collins and recently deceased NASA flight director Chris Kraft. The narration is in the form of Armstrong’s own words, spoken by Harrison Ford. ››› (Not rated: P) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE ALIENIST”

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 PG, 1 hr 43 min Action/Adventure, Animated, Comedy, Family
Set in late-19th-century New York (but actually filmed in Budapest), this made-for-TNT melodrama based on Caleb Carr’s best-selling novel earned an Emmy Award for its visual effects. A criminal psychologist (played by Daniel Bruhl) and a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) are teamed by Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty) – then the city’s police commissioner – to launch a covert investigation into the serial murders of young male prostitutes. They get an unexpected partner in a secretary (Dakota Fanning) who wants to prove her value as a novice detective. Douglas Smith and Matthew Shear co-star in the limited series as twin siblings who could prove pivotal to solving the case. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “ECHO IN THE CANYON”
DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD PG, 1 hr 42 min Action/Adventure, Comedy, Family, Suspense/Thriller
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK PG-13, 1 hr 51 min Horror, Suspense/Thriller
Some of the best-known names in mid-1960s pop and folk music are among the subjects of this documentary, which recalls the rise of the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles as a haven for acts such as the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds. The latter group’s Roger McGuinn is among those commenting on the creative center that the area became, with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Beck and Jakob Dylan also discussing the major influences that the tunes of that time and place became. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)
