WHEN THE RAINBOW BREAKS, HOLOCAUST LECTURE WITH DR. HENRY KNIGHT Thursday, March 14, 2019 6:30pm to 8:30pm Free event, open to the public. The rainbow has been a sign of divine promise and covenantal obligation grounding the shared values of civilized life. In the story of Noah, a rainbow follows the flood as a sign that God will not destroy the world by floods and as a symbol of human obligation for all peoples to follow the seven Noahide commandments expected of all human beings: • Prohibition against idolatry; • Prohibition against taking God’s name in vain; • Prohibition against murder; • Prohibitions against adultery and sexual immorality;

• Prohibition against theft; • Prohibition against eating flesh torn from a living animal; and • Obligation to establish courts of justice.

What does it mean for the binding values of civilized life to be utterly shattered? What does it mean for a transcendent God in covenantal partnership with humanity and all creation to sanction the slaughter of 1.5 million children by divine absence? These questions are the kinds that are raised when the rainbow breaks. Just as surely, one must ask what could lead to a sign of hope breaking forth in the aftermath of such a storm of destruction as that wrought by the Shoah. When the Rainbow Breaks is an exploration of these issues and questions. ‘The Good Fight’ continues in CBS All Access drama’s Season 3 As “The Good Wife’s” spinoff moves into its third season, its title “The Good Fight” has more meaning than ever. Not only does the current political climate in America test attorney Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and her colleagues, so does another lawyer (new cast addition, and “Masters of Sex” alum, Michael Sheen) who is very much his own person – for better or worse – as the streaming CBS All Access drama resumes Thursday, March 14. Cush Jumbo, Rose Leslie, Audra McDonald, Delroy Lindo, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman and Nyambi Nyambi also continue their roles. Baranski gives credit to executive producers Robert and Michelle King for “how exciting it is to be in a show where we portray characters that are living in this moment in time, in history. It’s a brave move for writers to be in the belly of the beast at this time. And I think Rob and Michelle are always breathlessly reading the newspaper, thinking, ‘Oh, my gosh, what fresh hell is this I’m writing about?’ So, it’s exciting for us.” Still, in frequently referencing political situations as they develop, Robert King allows that “We have a few backup plans if the world runs ahead of us, involving two or three pivotal scenes that we would have to reshoot. What you try to do is stay as close to the zeitgeist as possible, but it’s

very difficult when you’re writing ahead. I think what we’re planning to do is find a way to use certain scenes that help update the audience to the way things are right now.” Michelle King notes that “The Good Fight” is “far more political than we anticipated, because the world changed.” Indeed, Baranski explains, “The pilot was written on the assumption that Hillary Clinton would be president, and that Diane gives up her law practice saying, ‘There are no more glass ceilings.’ Well, you know, that was rewritten.” As for the new actor on the “Good Fight” block, Sheen is enjoying portraying intended provocateur Roland Blum. “It’s nice to play a character where I don’t have to go through hair and makeup in the morning,” the actor muses. “I just turn up, and that’s what I look like. I feel a bit like I’m expressing the id of the show, in a way, and there’s something incredibly freeing and liberating about that.” With the challenge posed to other characters by the fiercely independent and unconventional Blum, six-time Tony Award winner McDonald reports, “They have to question, or start to put aside, some of what they thought their morals were in order to achieve what they need to achieve. And that’s an interesting sort of trajectory to play, to grapple with.”

To avoid unpleasant financial surprises, look over your bills. An error could slip through and cause a major inconvenience.

VIRGO It’s important to think long and hard before undertaking something that could change your day-to-day life. You’ll be presented with new options as the week progresses.

LIBRA You’ll receive many invitations this week, each one more interesting than the last. Don’t forget to take the time to rest, or at least relax a little.

SCORPIO At work or in your social life, you’ll be responsible for organizing an event that will result in a record-breaking crowd. You might also find yourself getting more involved in your community.

SAGITTARIUS You’ll find a new form of spirituality that will allow you to develop a more active social life. Beneficial new friendships will take shape and bring you a sense of well-being.

CAPRICORN You’ll finally organize your priorities. A long period of procrastination will end and you’ll make changes you’ve been thinking about for a long time.

AQUARIUS You’ll start to make travel plans with your partner. Your research will allow you to learn about a place you’ve been longing to discover.

PISCES If you have worries about your health, take some time to see a doctor and undergo the necessary tests. You’ll get a clean bill of health or discover treatment options that’ll allow you to recover quickly.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Chris Pratt’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Passengers” (2016): Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence make an involving duo as (just about) the only two humans awake on a space station that’s making a very long voyage. “The Magnificent Seven” (2016): Though this Western remake doesn’t displace the classic original, it’s fun to watch Pratt hold his own against the likes of Denzel Washington as the village-saving gunslingers.

“Jurassic World” (2015): The fun spirit Pratt brings to his role as a “raptor whisperer” brings fresh energy to the franchise. “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014): A star was born with Pratt’s hugely likable portrayal of Peter Quill, the leader of an offbeat band of Marvel superheroes. “Her” (2013): Though the picture really belongs to Joaquin Phoenix and the voice of Scarlett Johansson, Pratt offers reliable supporting work. “The Five-Year Engagement” (2012): Again cast as the best pal, Pratt solidly supports top-billed stars Jason Segal and Emily Blunt.

‘The Lego Movie 2’ keeps building the series In movie terms, Legos have been building blocks of another kind. In a way, it was surprising that the first animated “Lego Movie” took so long to happen. Look at how long that toy not only has been around, but at how popular it’s been for generations. “The Lego Movie” was expectedly successful enough to yield some spinoffs – one centered around a Lego version of Batman – but now there’s an official sequel, rather logically titled “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.” Original writers Chris Miller and Phil Lord are back, so it’s to be expected that this edition will have a very familiar feel. The gaming rivalry between two real-world siblings sets up the premise, with Chris Pratt back as the voice of construction guy Emmett – and also as a “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part”

“Moneyball” (2011): Pratt gets to show off his athleticism as one of the Oakland Athletics players assessed for success by the team’s general manager and a consultant (Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill). “Bride Wars” (2009): Pratt was still trading on his goofy-funny television image (“Everwood,” “The O.C.”) in playing the fiance of Anne Hathaway’s character. “Wanted” (2008): Pratt’s future in action fare was foreshadowed by his part opposite Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy in this furiously paced espionage tale. “Strangers With Candy” (2005): While it isn’t a huge role for him, Pratt makes his mark – in a script co-written by star Amy Sedaris and Stephen Colbert – as a suitor of a middle-aged excon (Sedaris) who tries to resume her high-school life.

“GREEN BOOK” A major factor in this year’s film-award season – thanks in part to its five Oscar nominations, including best picture, which it won – this fact-inspired comedy-drama’s title item helps two traveling companions navigate racially sensitive territory, quite literally, in the early 1960s. Celebrated classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali, who earned his second Oscar here) gets a chauffeur and more in bouncer “Tony Lip” (Viggo Mortensen), hired to drive him to performances through the American South … at a time when “tolerance” wasn’t necessarily the operative word. Both stars are superb, and Linda Cardellini also is in director and co-writer Peter Farrelly’s cast. The real Tony’s son, Nick Vallelonga, also was one of the writers who gained an Oscar for best original screenplay. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries. **** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • March 10 - March 16, 2019

new hero named Rex Dangervest, whose skills come in very handy when the regular Lego gang faces off against a planet overseen by a queen voiced by Tiffany Haddish. Batman (voiced once more by Will Arnett) comes into play again here, as do the Lego takes on other legendary heroes, and the film eventually takes on the feel of everything being thrown at the wall to see what sticks. That’s not to say the picture doesn’t have its fun moments, with a voice cast that also includes such other returnees as Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum (as Superman), Jonah Hill (as Green Lantern), Cobie Smulders (as Wonder Woman) and Will Ferrell. And, having also inherited another iconic role as the current M to Daniel Craig’s James Bond, Ralph Fiennes is back from “The Lego Batman Movie” as manservant Alfred. The fortunate thing for the Lego movie series is that it can make its own rules. After all, it’s generating a world of its own, no matter how many links it has into other established areas such as the DC Comics universe. At the same time, with each film it puts forth, the Lego franchise has to stay true to its own world as fans become that much more familiar with it. “The Lego Movie 2” advances that reasonably well, while also including “Easter eggs” that reference situations from the preceding pictures. Sure, it helps to have seen those films ... but these are Legos that we’re talking about, after all, so you won’t exactly be left at sea if you don’t have those earlier movies as reference points. In the end, “The Lego Movie 2” doesn’t fall apart – but at the same time, it’s not unfair to say that it’s a bit overconstructed.

“FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD” Author J.K. Rowling’s saga continues with this fantasy, returning Eddie Redmayne to the role of Newt Scamander, who tries to get his Ministry of Magic rights restored by protecting Hogwarts teacher Dumbledore (Jude Law) from an enemy of equal power. Others become involved, with romantic complications factoring in as the pursuit continues. The cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz and (reprising the role of Grindelwald) Johnny Depp ... and, as always in such ventures, the members of the special-effects and visual-design teams also are stars here. “Harry Potter” veteran David Yates returns from the preceding chapter as the director. DVD extras: nine “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes. ››› (PG-13: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“MORTAL ENGINES” Talk about mobility ... entire cities are movable in this fantasy-drama that counts Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings”) among its producers and screenwriters. Adapted from a novel by Philip Reeve, the tale unfolds in the aftermath of an apocalypse as a teenager and a would-be killer (Robert Sheehan, Hira Hilmar) are forced to work together to prevent an incredibly powerful weapon from wiping out the cities-on-the-go. Given its creation of what effectively is a different universe, there’s a lot to digest here, but such visuals as a city in the sky keep the film involving. Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang, Patrick Malahide and Colin Salmon also appear. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“THE LAST SHIP: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON” A favorite of many naval personnel, who gave it some significant honors during its run, the TNT adventure-drama series – with filmmaker Michael Bay among its executive producers – wrapped up with this set of episodes. Though the threat of a global pandemic has passed, veterans of the U.S.S. Nathan Jensen are held responsible for an attack on Panama’s leader, putting America on the brink of another possible world war. Eric Dane, Bridget Regan, Adam Baldwin, Travis Van Winkle and Bren Foster are among the cast members who put codas on their roles; actor Peter Weller (“RoboCop”) directed several of the stories. A “Complete Series” collection also is newly available. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“DIVIDE AND CONQUER: THE STORY OF ROGER AILES” Both legendary and controversial for his rule of Fox News when it came into its own, and for many years thereafter, the late Ailes is recalled in Alexis Bloom’s warts-and-all documentary that amply notes the sizable influence in the political spectrum that Ailes had. It also traces situations that ultimately added up to Ailes’ ouster from Fox ... not long before his death, as it turned out. His ties to “The O’Reilly Factor’s” Bill O’Reilly get particular attention, and among those offering reflective comments are Glenn Beck and actor Austin Pendleton (“What’s Up, Doc?”), an Ailes friend from childhood. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)

“PERRY COMO’S MUSIC HALL” Recalling a brand of television that has become rare, this “Special Edition” release offers a 1967 episode of NBC’s “Kraft Music Hall” series that was hosted by famously calm and smooth singer Como. Giving an idea of the variety involved here, then-rising comedian George Carlin does a routine – certainly not involving his “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television” – and veteran vocalist Nancy Wilson also performs, as does ballerina Joyce Cuoco. Since the show aired during April, a musical Tax Day salute includes “Pennies From Heaven” and “The Best Things in Life Are Free.” ››› (Not rated)

AQUAMAN PG-13, 2 hr 23 min Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy
