WEEK OF MARCH 31 TO APRIL 6, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: TAURUS, GEMINI AND CANCER

ARIES You’re more vulnerable to colds and flus, even if you’re only slightly tired. Make sure to take time to recover from your superhuman efforts. TAURUS People who are easily confused will surround you and you’ll need to withdraw for a bit. You’ll be inspired to start a new spiritual practice. GEMINI Time is a rare commodity for many people and you won’t be an exception this week. You’ll find yourself working overtime to ensure you meet your deadlines. CANCER You’ll start to organize a trip as part of a couple or group. You’ll also make changes at home, which won’t be limited to moving your furniture around. LEO You’ll have to fight to find professional success. Good things are coming but you should be prepared for a bit of stress first. VIRGO You’ll need to make compromises before reaching an agreement that pleases everyone. You’ll have justice on your side when dealing with a conflict.

Selina throws her hat in the ring as HBO’s ‘Veep’ enters its final campaign Talk to just about any actor who has played a character over multiple seasons and they’ll talk of a withdrawal and a sadness they feel when it comes time to say goodbye. For Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has inhabited the skin of Vice President/President Selina Meyer in the HBO political satire “Veep,” which begins its seventh and final season Sunday, March 31, there were mixed emotions that came with the end of the Emmy-winning series. “I was so overcome with joy and grief, a joy and grief mash-up, as this show ended,” the actress explains, “and it really was very surprising to me ... . And I think that’s because this show frankly has been my baby for now eight

years, that I’ve felt fiercely protective of and proud of ... . You know, it’s not lost on me that that is not something that comes along with frequency. And so saying goodbye to it was a very hard thing to do even though it was our decision to do it. Ultimately it was a very sad thing. I don’t know how else to say it.” Her sadness is understandable. LouisDreyfus has enjoyed arguably her greatest professional success playing the self-centered, foul-mouthed former chief executive, winning six Emmy Awards as lead actress to go with three more for best comedy series (of which she is an executive producer). This in a career that has won her multiple awards and

critical praise in series such as “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Seinfeld.” As “Veep” gears up for its final round, few details were available on the seven episodes that make up Season 7, save for the fact that Selina will be back on the campaign trail as she runs for president and much of the cast, including Tony Hale as aide Gary, Anna Chlumsky as Selina’s right hand, Amy, and Gary Cole as Kent, her political strategist, will be back. A trailer made available recently features a montage of scenes from the new season, including one that is very emblematic of the times, in which Selina complains to her staff, “This entire country is getting

more disgusting by the second,” to which Kent replies, “That’s a demo we’re targeting on Facebook.” “I think that given our current political climate,” Louis-Dreyfus says, “it’s been more challenging for us to sort of push boundaries, so to speak. But having said that, we have this virtue of having not identified party in our show and not really identified any contemporary political figures, and so we’re in an alternate universe, and that’s helpful, particularly now. I think it’s, in many ways, why the show has lasted as long as it has, because it kind of invites everyone to the party ... and I think it’s, in a way, more apt than it ever has been given the current insanity that we’re all living in.”

LIBRA There’s lots of work on the horizon and you’ll receive an interesting job offer from the competition. You’ll struggle if your integrity is called into question. SCORPIO Your antics will diffuse a situation by making people laugh. You can expect praise for the way you deal with the situation. SAGITTARIUS There will be lots to do at home with your family and you’ll become a hero in the eyes of your loved ones. You’ll show a great amount of responsibility by placing your own priorities before anything else. CAPRICORN Others will take notice of you when you find the right words to express your point of view. When you get a new car, you’ll drive around showing it off to your friends. AQUARIUS You might start to take steps towards buying property or finding a better place to live. Shopping for your family will lead you to complete an ongoing project. PISCES You’ll be full of energy and ready to take on anything, at work as well as in your personal life. A getaway with your romantic partner, friends or family members will be greatly appreciated.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Tyler Perry Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Vice” (2018): Though Gen. Colin Powell isn’t the central character here, Perry gives a distinctive portrayal of the former U.S. Secretary of State. “Gone Girl” (2014): Perry puts himself in director David Fincher’s hands with an appealing portrayal of the lawyer a murdersuspected husband (Ben Affleck) puts his fate in the hands of. “Alex Cross” (2012): Again as only an actor-for-hire, Perry is quite good as novelist James Patterson’s psychology-based sleuth. “For Colored Girls” (2010): One of the rare times Perry has adapted someone else’s work, his version of an award-winning play boasts a great cast (Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, et al.).

“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” (2009): Though

BY JAY BOBBIN

Tyler Perry bids farewell to ‘Madea’ Tyler Perry certainly has made his mark with “Madea.” Maybe it’s not mentioned often (if at all) in the same breath as James Bond and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the comedy franchise certainly has been another enduring success. It apparently reaches its finale with the 11th chapter, “A Madea Family Funeral,” which writer, director and star Perry has maintained will be the last of those stories – but don’t place any bets on that just yet. The picture had a big opening, and history proves that can be a big cause to resurrect a character down the line. With that said, you safely can assume the funeral of the title is not Madea’s. Instead, it’s that

he didn’t direct, write or act in the Oscarwinning drama, Perry’s stamp is still on it as an executive producer.

“I Can Do Bad All by Myself” (2009): As a sudden, eminently unqualified surrogate parent, Taraji P. Henson gives a spectacular performance. “Meet the Browns” (2008): The source of a television sitcom, Perry’s comedydrama casts Angela Bassett as one relative at a funeral. “Daddy’s Little Girls” (2007): Idris Elba does wonderful acting as the “daddy” fighting to retain custody of his three daughters.

“Madea’s Family Reunion” (2006): Perry stepped into the position of auteur as writer, director and star of the tale that cemented his most popular character with a mass audience.

“Diary of a Mad Black Woman” (2005): The picture that started Perry’s movie career rolling stars Kimberly Elise and Steve Harris as a couple whose marriage is teetering. Michael B. Jordan

of a relative who met his fate while in very close throes with his wife’s best friend, and the resulting events reveal that other members of the family haven’t been too faithful to their own significant others. That gives Madea and company all the fuel they need to take the services well beyond a traditionally somber occasion. As usual, Perry fills several other roles as well ... including the new one of a supposedly incapacitated man who surpasses his limitations quite evidently. It’s a standout part, if often for politically incorrect reasons. The tone of the material won’t surprise the “Madea” faithful, switching with reasonable regularity between the comical and the sentimental. However, even the more heartfelt moments have a certain edge to them, and that’s Perry’s style. Even his pictures that haven’t involved Madea (“Daddy’s Little Girls,” “Why Did I Get Married?,” etc.) are balancing acts in seriocomic terms, and the beauty of being one’s own boss is that you pretty much can do what you want, as Perry has. Of course, it takes a receptive following to be able to keep doing that, and Perry has been fortunate (and undoubtedly knows it) in gaining such a loyal fan base. Smartly, he also has rented himself out as an actor-for-hire for such projects as “Gone Girl” and the recent “Vice,” knowing that those paychecks will help finance his own ventures. As with most of the “Madea” movies, the humor is continually hit-or-miss in “A Madea Family Funeral.” Even if this edition has “Funeral” in its title, though, don’t be surprised if its lure to audiences ultimately makes it not the end after all.

Jamie Lee Curtis

“VICE” Recent history can be dicey to deal with in a movie if it’s not a documentary, since memories of the reallife players and situations tend to be strong. Writer-director Adam McKay – a comedy specialist – takes that gamble with this largely bemused view of the rise of Dick Cheney, who would make a mark as the vice president serving under George W. Bush. Especially remarkable is the transformation of star Christian Bale into Cheney, clearly with a major assist from the film’s makeup and hair artists (who won Oscars for it), but also in his playing of the demeanor that takes Cheney through his courtship with wife Lynne (Amy Adams, also fine) and to the heights of political power. Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell and Tyler Perry also are notable as (respectively) President George W. Bush, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Bluray and On Demand)

“BUMBLEBEE” The “Transformers” series gets a new iteration with this sci-fi adventure focused in the title character (voiced by Dylan O’Brien), which looks like a Volkswagen but actually is ... well, something else. It gets a new owner in a troubled teen (Hailee Steinfeld) who, in reactivating the vehicle, unwittingly helps lure enemy Decepticons to Earth and causes the familiar “Transformers” brand of mayhem to ensue again. Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”) plays the girl’s mother, with John Cena and John Ortiz as government agents. Familiar faces Len Cariou (“Blue Bloods”) and Fred Dryer (“Hunter”) also are in the cast, but as usual with a venture like this, the members of the special-effects team are the real stars here. ››› (PG-13: P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE MULE” Also this drama’s director, Clint Eastwood gives himself another great character as he plays a senior citizen whose personal life is on the ropes. He finds surprising redemption and financial success in becoming a drug transporter – or a “mule” – for a Mexican cartel, but he still has regrets, especially where his long-neglected ex-wife and daughter are concerned. The daughter is played by Eastwood’s own offspring Alison, and Dianne Wiest has some heartbreaking moments as the former spouse. Earlier Eastwood colleagues Laurence Fishburne and Bradley Cooper resurface as DEA agents who eventually get clued into the old-timer’s activities, but there’s no doubt that this picture ultimately belongs to Eastwood himself. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS. N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “RUST CREEK” Good reviews met director Jen McGowan’s bare-bones thriller, casting newcomer Hermione Corfield as a college student who gets lost on her way to a job interview – landing her in cold Kentucky woodlands, where she has to evade fiends who have nothing good in mind for her as she struggles to survive the elements. Filmed on location, the melodrama also features Jay Paulson as a stranger with ties to her pursuers; he may be the young woman’s only hope of staying alive, especially since the local sheriff (Sean O’Bryan) doesn’t seem prone to help after her abandoned car is found. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “MY BRILLIANT FRIEND: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” The drama series based on Elena Ferrante’s novel is a unique HBO venture for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it’s being shown in America in its original Italian language. The saga ultimately spans 60 years in the relationship of two women in Naples – and the show may get the opportunity to explore much of that period, since it has been renewed for a second season. Though their connection is destined to take darker turns, the ladies’ burgeoning friendship as children fuels the early episodes, with Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti playing the central roles. The show is a co-production with Italy’s RAI network. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “ARCHER: DANGER ISLAND – THE COMPLETE SEASON NINE” As suggested by the title, the animated FXX series undergoes a big switch from its usual secret agent theme with this round of the show. Here, Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) is a drink-loving aviator in the South Pacific in the era of World War II, where all sorts of perils await him and his co-pilot Pam (voice of Amber Nash). Series creator Adam Reed – who’s also in the voice cast here – has said the season was inspired heavily by the 1980s series “Tales of the Gold Monkey.” Judy Greer, Jessica Walter, Aisha Tyler and Chris Parnell also are heard. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V)
