PBS’ ‘Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation’ recalls a transcendent moment in culture
The 1969 Woodstock Festival was an event so fraught with problems it could have spun off into chaos at any one of dozens of junctures. Instead, 500,000 attendees, promoters, staff, musicians and others pulled together in a sense of community and made it one of the transcendent cultural happenings of the 20th century. And as its 50th anniversary approaches, a new PBS documentary recalls that time. “Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation,” a two-hour “American Experience” film airing Tuesday, Aug. 6 (check local listings), looks not at the music and the musicians who performed at that upstate New York concert on Aug. 15-18, 1969, but at the myriad stories in the crowd and behind the scenes through footage and interviews with attendees, promoters and others. The odds were against it from the get-go. One town had banned the concert after construction was already underway, forcing promoters to find another site, eventually settling on Max Yasgur’s farm in nearby Bethel. Then there were shortages of food, sanitary and medical facilities and staff, resulting in thousands of concertgoers walking in without paying. Surrounding roads were choked with traffic and the locals were not amused. But instead of tensions boiling over and fights breaking out, everyone kept a cool head, helped their neighbor and made the show the legendary event it became. There’s a reason they became known as the Woodstock Generation. “I honestly don’t think that could’ve happened,” says Barak Goodman, the film’s director, “if not for the fact that it’s 1969 and these young people had been conditioned for a while to buy into this ethic
and this notion of sharing and communitarianism and a kind of rejection of materialism and so on. “And people talk about the miracle of Woodstock,” he continues, “how it was that that event stayed peaceful, stayed relatively injury-free and tragedy-free even amid the crazy chaos of the whole thing. And I put it down to the values that that generation that by that time honed ... this sense of helping each other out and living a different kind of life.” And that manifested itself in numerous ways, from the “freak-out tents” for those having bad LSD trips to the en-masse meals made from local oats, milk and yogurt that were passed out to famished hippies. Even the promoters got in the spirit, making it a free concert when it became evident there was no way of stemming the flow of non-paying clientele. Initially, they lost millions and flirted with bankruptcy until they were rescued by uncollected ticket revenue, the sale of their stake in the original Woodstock documentary and other deals. “In the end, they did break even and even scratched out a little bit of a profit over time,” Goodman says, “but it was such an act of faith to go forward when they did. It was just like there’s more important things than money here. We’re just going to go ahead and whatever happens happens. ...” “I think what Woodstock demonstrates,” he continues, “is what happens when 500,000 can pull together and you can really change the world. It sounds like a cliché but it isn’t. And that festival has for 50 years inspired people to believe that change is possible, that goodness is possible, that all those kind of values that are sort of sneered at are really actually possible, demonstrated in this kind of way.”
It’s important to make time for your family. Your parents or children need you and you won’t hesitate to devote your time to helping them. Your home will be full of love.
VIRGO
You’ll decide to go back to school or take some extra training. Even if it takes a lot of time and effort, you’ll reap the benefits quickly.
LIBRA
You’ll work extra hours, which you’ll be generously compensated for. Your efforts will be rewarded with a promotion and your boss’ gratitude. You’ll be satisfied by affectionate interactions with your partner.
SCORPIO
You’re on the cusp of a new beginning. If you’re looking for a job, you’ll find a promising new career. The salary will allow you to add to your savings. You’ll also be happy to loosen your purse strings.
SAGITTARIUS
You’ll be inspired to define your priorities and to visualize your future. You’ll gain sudden insight into which path to follow. An adventurer at heart, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a new culture.
CAPRICORN
You’ll happily organize an event that brings people together. You won’t need more than a few words to establish perfect harmony among the people around you. Changes occur to bring you and your partner closer together.
AQUARIUS
You’ll get a promotion at work when a colleague retires. To your surprise, a new lifestyle allows you to accomplish big things. Friends will invite you on a trip or a short escapade that recharges your batteries.
PISCES
You’ll contemplate an adventure abroad and even consider moving to a different country. You’ll start to put a project in motion. Even if you’re shy and reserved, you’ll have the courage to follow through on your ideas and achieve your goals.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Stronger” (2017): Gyllenhaal does affecting work in the true story of a physically impacted survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who did much to help the FBI solve the case. “Nightcrawler” (2014): Gyllenhaal is compelling as a novice freelance cameraman who finds that crime-scene footage can translate into big payments. “Prisoners” (2013): An intense Gyllenhaal plays a police detective trying to locate two kidnapped children while the father (Hugh Jackman) of one of the youngsters goes rogue. “End of Watch” (2012): Gyllenhaal remakes his screen image impressively as an intense L.A. cop who runs afoul of an over-theborder cartel. “Brothers” (2009): Gyllenhaal is strong as a missing soldier’s (Tobey Maguire) sibling who becomes involved with his sister-in-law (Natalie Portman) during the other man’s absence. “Jarhead” (2005): Playing a soldier himself, Gyllenhaal is effective as a Marine who becomes caught up in the Persian Gulf War. “Brokeback Mountain” (2005): In what has to be deemed his milestone role to date, Gyllenhaal plays one cowboy very deeply involved with another (Heath Ledger).

‘Spider-Man’ makes a swing overseas Let this be said right up front: Do not walk out of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” before the end credits are over. If you do, you’ll miss a major twist, and one that certainly will be vital to the next movie in the series. The film that leads up to it is pretty enjoyable, though after all the Spidey stories there have been, it still relies on the basic and familiar premise of our young hero battling the monster du jour. In this case, it’s really “monsters,” which take various forms as Peter Parker and his pals embark on a school trip through Europe in the aftermath of the events of “Avengers: Endgame” ... and the picture is wise in changing the setting, since “Spider-Man” typically has been an all-American venture. The group’s first stop is Venice, which barely survives (though some might argue that it doesn’t) an attack by the so-called
“The Day After Tomorrow” (2004): The visual effects are the real stars here, but Gyllenhaal is a stalwart young hero on the run from effects of global warming in a frozen-over New York. “Moonlight Mile” (2002): Gyllenhaal is an excellent stand-in for director Brad Silberling in the fact-based tale of survivors of a young woman lost tragically. “The Good Girl” (2002): An impressive Gyllenhaal plays a store employee who has an affair with a married co-worker (Jennifer Aniston).
Tom Holland
Elementals – and then, Prague scarcely fares any better. “Elementals” is a pretty clever name for the bad guys, since they take in the characteristics of such elements as water and fire, and in extremely big and destructive ways. Of course, that lets the special-effects team have a field day, generating some whoppers of visuals given the creative freedom that computer-created imagery enables. Tom Holland hits more of the right notes in his latest turn as the web-slinger, whether the young hero is trying to woo Mary Jane (played by Zendaya) rather clumsily or scoping out a would-be mentor who comes to be known as Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal, the latest example of the fun casting of known “guest stars” – see Michael Douglas, Jeff Bridges, etc. – that the Marvel movies delve into). Credit returning director Jon Watts with ensuring enough fresh entertainment value to make the newest “Spider-Man” more than just a cash cow ...which it clearly also is, since it’s been proven that the mere mention of Spidey’s name will draw masses of the faithful back into theaters immediately. There are nice through lines in having Samuel L. Jackson, Marisa Tomei and Jon Favreau back as Nick Fury, Aunt May and Iron Man’s pal Happy Hogan respectively, and those are smart filmmaker moves in the way of audience comfort. By now, there have been so many adventures in the Marvel canon, it takes a lot for one to really distinguish itself from the pack. The overseas locales surely help “Spider-Man: Far From Home” on that count, and overall, it succeeds enough to keep viewers feeling right at home.
Justice Smith
“POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU” The popular, enduring franchise takes a big turn by yielding its first live-action tale, though Ryan Reynolds’ performance in the title role is a matter of the motion-capture technique. An insurance salesman (Justice Smith) is the only person who can understand him, making them unusual allies in the culture-merging Ryme City as the salesman probes the circumstances behind the apparent death of his father ... who happened to be Pikachu’s police partner. A would-be reporter (Kathryn Newton, “Big Little Lies”) joins them in their quest. Bill Nighy (“Love Actually”), Ken Watanabe, Chris Geere (“You’re the Worst”), Suki Waterhouse and singer-actress Rita Ora the unusual and – expectedly – highly visual mix of elements. DVD extras: seven “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by “Mr. Mime”; alternate opening; music video. ››› (PG: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • August 4 - 10, 2019

Though it doesn’t have “The Conjuring” in its title, this thriller is part of that horror franchise, telling the tale of a woman (Patricia Velasquez) who tries to protect her sons from a supernatural force in mid-1970s Los Angeles. A social worker (Linda Cardellini) tries to help, but she ultimately finds herself another target of the sinister spirit known as La Llorona, which dates back to 19th-century Mexico. The film was written by Gary Dauberman, the writer-director of the latest of the “Annabelle” movies, which also belong to the so-called Conjuring Universe. Tony Amendola, who appeared in the original “Annabelle” tale, reprises his role from that here. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; storyboards. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “TOLKIEN” The life of the writer who gave the world one of its most beloved fantasy sagas – “The Lord of the Rings,” of course – is dramatized, with Nicholas Hoult playing the author in his younger years, collecting experiences and relationships that would help fuel his later work. Teaching at Oxford University and participating in World War I were among the chapters J.R.R. Tolkien experienced firsthand, as well as a romance that impacted him profoundly; Lily Collins (“Masterpiece: Les Miserables”) portrays the woman he adored, who eventually became his wife (and the inspiration for the “Rings” character Arwen). Colm Meaney and Derek Jacobi also appear in the film, which the Tolkien estate did not cooperate with. DVD extras: audio commentary by director Dome Karukoski; deleted scenes; photo gallery. ››› (PG-13: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “AMAZING GRACE” Long before it finally reached theater screens, this documentary generated many news stories because its subject – the late music icon Aretha Franklin – filed lawsuits to prevent its release. She recorded her huge-selling album “Amazing Grace” over two nights of gospel concerts at a church in the Watts section of Los Angeles in 1972, and later Oscar winner Sydney Pollack (“Out of Africa”) filmed the performances. As powerful as they were, with even Franklin saying she liked the footage, she didn’t want it released ... reportedly fearing the public would react to her star power more than to the meaning of the music, after some technical snafus had been cleared up by digital means. Ultimately, one of the producers appealed to Franklin’s estate after her passing, resulting in the picture’s exhibition almost 50 years later. Selections include “How I Got Over” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and now, the movie also serves as a reflective testament to one of the greatest voices in the history of music. ›››› (G) “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WOODSTOCK: THREE DAYS THAT DEFINED A GENERATION” Debuting on home video in the same week it gets its PBS premiere, director, producer and co-writer Barak Goodman’s 50th-anniversary documentary explores the circumstances that led to one of the most legendary – and some understandably would argue “the most” – of all rock concerts. Woodstock, N.Y., was the setting on which 400,000-plus attendees converged ... and as opposed to the Oscarwinning 1970 movie that gave much of its attention to the featured musical acts, this profile focuses on those who were witnesses to the events from off the stage, including security guards who surely had their hands full and the local population whose number swelled for three very memorable days. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2
“POMS”
PG, 1 hr 26 min Animated, Comedy
There’s no expiration date on becoming a cheerleader, as this comedy suggests. Also an executive producer of the picture, Diane Keaton plays a new resident of a retirement community who prefers to keep to herself at first, but she eventually opens up under the encouragement of a spirited new neighbor (Jacki Weaver, “Silver Linings Playbook”). Together, they then inspire some of their peers to join her in forming an energetic squad that gets its rah-rahs on. Pam Grier, Rhea Perlman, Celia Weston and Bruce McGill are among co-stars. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
