What’s New NOW On

September 1 “Movie: The Penguin Counters” This 2017 documentary follows the efforts of Oceanites CEO Ron Naveen and his team of scientists as they track the impact of climate change and ocean health by counting penguin populations in Antarctica, positing that as that population of aquatic birds goes, so will humans. “Movie: Top Spin” From directors Sarah Newens and Mina T. Son comes this 2014 documentary that follows the efforts of American teens Ariel Hsing, Michael Landers and Lily Zhang to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic table tennis team. “Movie: I, Frankenstein” Mary Shelley’s concept of a synthetic man gets a modern spin in this 2014 melodrama, based on Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel but appearing to cobble much of the “Underworld” movie series onto the original story basics. Aaron Eckhart plays the “monster,” whose life source interests a leader of demons (Bill Nighy). Yvonne Strahovski also stars as the scientist charged with recharging the creature. Miranda Otto and Jai Courtney are featured as well. “Movie: Godzilla” Despite such notable human stars as Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche, size still matters when it comes to the most notable cast member in this 2014 remake of the monster classic. Then again, he’s the title character, so what else would you expect? Fearsome as he is, Godzilla also is the piece’s hero as he battles creatures called MUTOs. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins also star.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1 TO 7, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CAPRICORN, AQUARIUS AND PISCES

ARIES

Even if you’ve just gone back to work, you’re already bored of the routine and need a change. Make a plan and start to take the necessary steps. Slowly but surely, you’ll get there. This daring idea will prove profitable in the long run.

TAURUS

It’s easier to get along with people you don’t have an emotional connection to. One of your children will lack discipline and try your patience this week. Always a diplomat, you’ll succeed in resolving a big conflict.

GEMINI

There will be lots of details to keep track of this week. At work, you’ll be in charge of organizing an event that brings people together, but some will be hard to get in touch with. Be patient, they’ll call you back eventually.

CANCER

At work or in your personal life, your leadership skills are required. You’ll work hard to make two different groups come to an agreement. You’ll be considered a hero for saving the situation, and others will be grateful for your bravery.

LEO

Dog and Beth Chapman fight crime and cancer on WGN America’s ‘Dog’s Most Wanted’ To the end, Beth Chapman always had her husband Duane “Dog” Chapman’s back, even while battling stage 4 lung cancer. Her fight against the disease and their quest to bring the most dangerous criminals to justice are front and center of a series premiering this week on WGN America. Filmed prior to her death at age 51 in June, “Dog’s Most Wanted,” premiering Wednesday, Sept. 4, finds husband and wife and their “Dirty Dozen” bounty hunting team chasing his bucket list of fugitives most wanted by the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and individual states, offenders who have committed, in Chapman’s words, “horrendous, felonious crimes against persons.” The challenge in this, the former “Dog the Bounty Hunter” star says, is staying out of the government agents’ way when they’re both on the same trail. “I’ll locate them, sit outside and call you, Marshal Joe,” Chapman explains. “So you’ve got to stay, as a bounty hunter, in your own realm. Because these guys go in, they hit a time clock just like if you work at Safeway and they ... give a pay thing to their boss to get paid on John Doe. So they’re out there using their time and money and here comes Hotrod Doggie and steals their s..., right? So you’ve got to be very, very careful with them.” “I swear to God I’ve got ESP,” he continues. “I can sit there and look at the mugshot and know where this guy might be at. I know it’s incredible but wait until you see the (show). ...

We’re using drones, we’re using night vision. I got a guy the other day and we used all that s... on him and got him, and he’s like, ‘Dog ... I love you but you’re cheating.’ ” During all of this, Beth Chapman was fighting what would become a losing battle against cancer. Different scenes in the trailer show her talking about her “incurable” disease and at the hospital with Dog and loved ones. Despite her illness, she was determined to remain active in hunting down fugitives, which Chapman says proved therapeutic for them both. “She took one treatment of chemo, it almost killed her,” Chapman says. “And she said, ‘Honey, I’m not letting you go by yourself out there. Somebody’s going to kill you, Big Daddy, without me. I gotta be there.’ She was a control freak, bad.” “Because I gave her so many assignments, she was so happy ...,” he continues. “This show, she didn’t die because of it but she did die for it. It was very important to her and she wanted to show people how to beat cancer. And then she got so depressed. I said, ‘Honey, it’s alright. You beat it anyway. You’re out there filming, you’re doing all this Beth. You’re alright.’ So that’s why she wanted to do that. She was just a leader.”

One of your kids may make you late, causing you to rush to make it to your appointments on time. Now that the kids are leaving the nest, the family home is too big. It may be time to downsize.

VIRGO

You’ll be on the move this week. Whether it’s at work or in your family, there will be lots of confusion to clear up. A shocking secret may be revealed. New friendships will spontaneously develop.

LIBRA

You’ll finally get the financing you’ve been waiting for to get a big project started. You may want to start a small business at home or with a family member. Your inspiration and intuition will show you which path to follow.

SCORPIO

There’s lots going on, but you may still have the feeling that things aren’t advancing quickly enough. You’ll have some spectacular ideas to propose and your lover will be the first to be impressed.

SAGITTARIUS

Your health may slow you down a little. Use this time to step back and make a plan for your future, both professionally and personally. Your spirituality will become more important to you.

CAPRICORN

Your stress levels will be high, but you’ll use the resulting increase in energy to become more efficient. When your back is to the wall, magic happens. It will be love at first sight, but if you’re not single, you’ll be left confused.

AQUARIUS

At work, you’ll be given new responsibilities that don’t necessarily match your skills. Happily, it’s what you need to propel you towards a big promotion. You’ll also get the go ahead to take on a new and exciting project.

PISCES

Seeing students hit the books inspires you to go back to school yourself. Your new skills will offer you better opportunities in the future. A romantic getaway will put the spark back in your relationship.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Dwayne Johnson’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Skyscraper” (2018): Though some of its action sequences give credibility a really big stretch, this Johnson vehicle about a security man fighting villains in a Hong Kong high-rise that’s ablaze – yes, “Die Hard” meets “The Towering Inferno” – offers undeniable escapist fun. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017): With his humor going a long way,

Johnson turns avatar in this very enjoyable revisiting of the board-game-come-to-life story that fueled an earlier Robin Williams movie. “The Fate of the Furious” (2017): In their returns to the franchise, Johnson and Jason Statham are so effective as enemies-on-the-run Hobbs and Shaw, a separate movie series for the two of them has been launched. “Moana” (2016): Johnson became part of the Disney-animation family by lending his voice to the shape-shifting character Maui in this saga. “San Andreas” (2015): Earning his disastermovie stripes, Johnson is solid as a rescuehelicopter pilot trying to save his ex-wife and daughter from “the big one” when it strikes California. “Pain & Gain” (2013): Johnson rolls with the seriocomic tone of this true tale about several Miami bodybuilders enmeshed in an extortion plot. “Snitch” (2013): Combining brawn and heart, Johnson plays a novice DEA agent trying to get his incarcerated son off the hook by catching the true bad guys. “The Game Plan” (2007): An appealing Johnson plays an NFL veteran whose carefree lifestyle changes radically when he learns he has a daughter (Madison Pettis). “Gridiron Gang” (2006): Ably carrying this true drama on his shoulders, Johnson plays an ex-football star who forms a team out of juvenile delinquents. “The Rundown” (2003): Still billed solely as “The Rock” at the time, Johnson scored a big hit with this action-comedy about a retrieval mission couched in a treasure hunt in the Amazon.

BY JAY BOBBIN

Johnson and Statham reunite in the furious ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Whether it’s that you know the “Fast and the Furious” movie series or you’re familiar with the kinds of pictures Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham typically make, there is virtually no way you can walk into the spinoff “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” without knowing what you’re going to get. In fact, it was the repartee between the two stars in earlier editions of the franchise that prompted the thought of giving them their own film. And even the word “film” sounds a little lofty: Even with Helen Mirren showing up as the mother of Statham’s Shaw again, this is pedal-to-the-metal action from the first minute, strictly built to please the crowd it’s aimed at. And with as successful as the “Fast and the Furious” entries have been, that’s a

Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson star in “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”

pretty big crowd, internationally as well as in America. Shaw’s sister, a British spy played by Vanessa Kirby, is the reason federal agent Hobbs and troubleshooter Shaw are in each other’s orbit again. She’s failed to stop an agent turned terrorist who is bent on unleashing a devastating virus on mankind ... with the cybernetically enhanced villain (come on, now, something always has to be enhanced in anything with a “Fast & Furious” connection) played quite formidably by Idris Elba. This might sound like any number of adventure movies and even adventure spoofs, but style is everything in the case of “Hobbs & Shaw,” and it just keeps moving for two hours-plus at a clip that rarely gives you enough time to question anything (including why some other familiar faces pop up again). That’s thanks not only to the established “Fast and the Furious” formula, but also to director David Leitch, of the similarly furious “John Wick” movies. The expectedly jaw-dropping degree and quality of stunt work is here, many involving vehicles that likely would end up fused to Hobbs and/or Shaw if the fellows weren’t so agile. Their physical exploits are like a violent ballet, expertly choreographed as they are – but that will come to absolutely no surprise to any fan of the overall series, even the mildest ones. The phrase “It is what it is” absolutely applies to “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” Shakespeare it surely is not, but if you’re going to go along for the ride that it promises, you may as well just strap yourself in and have fun with it.

“MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL” It doesn’t have Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, but this effort to continue the action-comedy-fantasy franchise pairs Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson – reteamed from “Thor: Ragnarok” – as two more dark-suited operatives dispatched to protect humanity from alien enemies. There may be an enemy within their own ranks, though, since someone appears to be leaking top-secret information. Directed by F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton”), the tale is expectedly heavy on effects, but it clearly is at a disadvantage from not having the Smith-and-Jones repartee. Emma Thompson returns to her role from earlier installments, while Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson and Kumail Nanjiani also are series newcomers. ››› (PG: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW

Octavia Spencer gets to have a field day with a horror role in this melodrama reuniting her with filmmaker Tate Taylor, who directed her to an Oscar win for “The Help.” She plays a woman initially deemed the coolest person in her neighborhood by the teens she helps with their partying, but they soon have reason to suspect she harbors some sinister secrets ... and are they ever right, as is confirmed soon via terrifying circumstances that turn life-threatening. Diana Silvers portrays a town newcomer who ends up in danger; the cast also includes Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis, Missi Pyle and another alum of “The Help” (and another Oscar winner), Allison Janney. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; two “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; alternate ending. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BOOKSMART” Actress Olivia Wilde turned feature-film director – and won wide acclaim for the result – with this comedy, casting Kaitlyn Dever (“Last Man Standing”) and Beanie Feldstein as high-schoolers on the verge of graduating. Sensing they’ve missed out on much of the fun of being teenagers, they set out to make up for lost time, but their efforts to get to a certain party turn into a seemingly endless string of misadventures. The movie’s writers include Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, who also created Patricia Heaton’s new CBS sitcom “Carol’s Second Act.” Jessica Williams, Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, Jason Sudeikis, Billie Lourd and “Ma’s” Diana Silvers also appear ... but the key to the picture’s success among the actors rests mainly with Feldstein and Dever, who prove to be extremely well-matched. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “TRUE DETECTIVE: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON” At a time when he also was captivating moviegoers in “Green Book,” with what would become his second Oscar-winning performance, Mahershala Ali was earning raves from many television critics for his work in the most recent season of this HBO drama anthology. The story involves three interconnected timelines as Ali plays a police detective working the case of two missing children – with unsettling discoveries not only at the time of the original investigation, but during the years that would follow. Stephen Dorff plays the cop’s partner in a solid cast that also includes Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, Ray Fisher, Mamie Gummer, Josh Hopkins, Jon Tenney and Michael Rooker. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto also directed a couple of the episodes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU!: THE COMPLETE SERIES LIMITED EDITION 50TH ANNIVERSARY MYSTERY MANSION”

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

If you’re a fan of the Mystery Machine crew, it does not get better than this. Marking the series’ golden anniversary, this elaborate set features every episode of the original animated show (for those counting, there were 41) on Blu-ray for the first time, along with fun extras that any devotee of Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Fred will enjoy ... such as an exclusive Funko keychain and a Scooby mini-encyclopedia. Of course, Scooby-Doo is the Hanna-Barbera-developed canine who finds his way into bizarre mysteries along with his teenage pals, though courage is a trait that’s often in short supply for him. If the voice of Shaggy seems especially familiar, it belonged to the late Casey Kasem, the longtime host of radio’s “American Top 40.” (Not rated: V)

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (2019) PG-13, 2 hr 9 min Action/Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Back at a time when fitness series were relatively rare on television, the phenomenally fit LaLanne had a 34-year run (1951-85) with this program that started as a local show in his native San Francisco, then got national distribution via ABC. If there was one thing the host would not do, it was to let viewers give up on themselves, and his encouragement was limitless as he used various household items as props in showing them how to take literal steps to good health. His dog Happy became an on-air sidekick of sorts, helping to draw in young viewers ... who, in turn, drew their parents to the screen. Lest you wonder how well LaLanne’s advice worked for him himself, he lived to be 96 (passing away in 2011). ››› (Not rated)
